3.5 stars. Although the decor and ambiance, including soft music, make Rice Village Cafe a great place to dine in, it is clear that most of their business is takeout and delivery. It is a real plus that free parking is available in front of the restaurant in Rice Village. Brandon is an attentive, courteous and knowledgeable server. The food is excellent. The egg rolls are light, crispy and savory and served with fresh green leaf lettuce, cilantro and a delicious fish sauce. The pho is fragrant and comforting. The bun is tasty and plentiful. The main complaint is that prices are much higher than nearby restaurants such as Lien's Viet Kitchen, Vietopia, Lua Viet Kitchen, Kau Ba and Pho 5Plus. The pho is over $17, and the egg rolls, which are over $12 for five, are the tiniest egg rolls that I have ever seen. Rice Village is definitely a high restaurant district, but the restaurant would see more business with more reasonable menu prices. There was only one other table during the entire 1.5 hours that we were there.

I'm not sure why this is called Rice Village Cafe on Yelp--the sign above the door the two times my boyfriend and I have visited says "Kim Son." The first time we came, we ordered takeout and it was extremely good. The eggrolls were delicious and so was the pho + broth. The second time we came, we dined in and ordered the same things. In person, the broth took a very long time to cool off. I have a love + hate relationship with it, because I do love how long the warmth of the broth lasts, but it also burned my tongue as I kept trying to eat it. Maybe as takeout, we used a different bowl, so it took quicker for it to cool off. However, in-person, I just kept feeling frustrated at how hot the broth was, and despite how hungry I was, I could not eat it without my tongue feeling like it was being boiled. Aside from the food, the service was amazing both times we visited. The man who was at the front treated us amazing and all the waiters/waitresses were very helpful and nice. Every time we pass by, there are never many people eating here, which is kind of weird considering how the food is not bad at all. The inside is also pretty clean and I love the bar area with decorations. We will definitely return when we crave some good Pho, but will probably get takeout.

I love this place! Been looking for a good Banh Mi and here I found it. Service peeps are attentive. Sandwiches are fresh and sooooo good. One thing is the prices! 3 sandwiches for $21 bucks! Can't beat that!

PHO CHAY "VEGGIE PHO" Shrimp Spring Rolls (2pcs)

I ate at this restaurant around a year ago and came out disappointed, food was below average and service wasn't the best either. They've been under a new management for the past 3 months. I'm obsessed with Vietnamese food, specially Pho, Spring rolls and Bah Minh, so since 2017 I try to go to new pho places each time I can and give it a try, I have my favorite places of course and I come back to them often. Food here was ok, the Bahn Min is slightly toasted, and I loved that... is how I understand it needs to be, it lacked a little love (or probably experience?) in the preparation... butter was everywhere and not properly spread, also probably more pickled carrots/onion flavor, at least that's how it tastes in the place where I think they make the best I've had so far (Simply Pho). The Pho needs a little more life, more intensity in its flavour and colour, but it was decent, I always order beef broth with veggies and tofu wherever I go... this one didn't change my life, it has room for improvement, finally the thing that I disliked the most was the spring rolls, they definitely need more love and the peanut sauce, a more intense sweet touch, I ordered tofu ones, but idk they were plain and tasteless in comparison to the places where I like them the most. Service was good, dedicated and polite, by far I can assure the quality service is the biggest improvement I noticed from former management/staff.

Showing the 15% discount for food we couldn't even eat. Disappointing

We come here to eat quite often. However, today I REALLY wish we hadn't. We absolutely love their Garlic Crabs today we got an order that we couldn't even eat because they were full of the disgusting fat. We told our waiter and he walked off. Another waiter came to our table and asked if we wanted a to go box and I told him of the situation he took one of the plates and told the manager. He returned to our table and said he couldn't take them off our ticket but gave us a 15% discount. Really?!?!?! For food we couldn't even eat? Not sure I'll be coming back if this is the way they handle issues with bad food.

    Pho Tai Soup

Came here for lunch, ordered Pho Tai and Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, both are around $13. Both noodle dishes are good, could have more meat though. They have booth seating and table seating, it's a full service restaurant.

Chicken curry from the Rice location
    Keisha R.

The location is nice but I was just there for takeout. I had the Shanghai dumplings and they are very very good. They are very big and flavorful. The chicken curry was just ok big wasn't super flavorful with that curry flavor. The rice was also kinda mushy. The staff was very nice and polite. I've been to the Memorial location and liked it so I will return to the Rice location and just try the dishes I always get-the shrimp coconut curry linguini. It is so so good. Rich with curry flavor and the noodles are cooked perfectly.

$19 plus tax for a large Pho Tai Bo Vien. Save your money and go down Bellaire for better quality and less whitewashed Asian dishes

    Singapore noodles with tofu
    Yumi J.

I really wanted to enjoy this place as I love all kinds of Asian food and could always use another place near by. Singapore noodles has always been a favorite of mine and Ive recently gone vegetarian and thought I'd try them. There was no flavor really and very little that was tossed in with the noodles -dry and boring. The tofu had no flavoring at all and it you eat tofu you know it needs to absorb the flavors of the dish. The edamame was steamed and very plain, but I added salt. The lemon grass shrimp was tasty but the shrimp was over cooked with the tails on and the sauce was so concentrated that you needed the rice as a side to cut the salt. The best we're the Vietnamese egg rolls. I'll probably give the place another chance and maybe this might be a different experience.

I got the grilled pork bun. Not bad, but for the price I would expect: more meat, better quality meat and/or flavor with a stronger punch.

Lots of seating, great wait staff, and the sandwiches are gigantic--as they should be for the price. $30 for a sandwich on average. We split an open face pastrami (which they brought an extra plate) and we are glad we did. The potato salad is tiny. Too much sandwich for one but not enough potato salad for two! The pickles they provide before your sandwich arrives are yummy- not like a traditional out of the bar pickle. These are what I remember from NYC. Garlic and not sweet. We also had the apple pie alamode. Also pricey and gigantic. It was warm and delicious. Glad we tried this icon. We went at lunch and they get quite the crowd. You are not rushed at all. Before their recent expansions to Austin, it all began here in Rice Village exactly 15 years ago. The vibes are contemporary and casual, with the kind of space that fits for just about any scenario. Whether it's a solo meal, a lunch date, or a group led affair, the experience is almost always an excellent one. Start by ordering at the counter and find a seat where the food will brought directly to the table. So much of their variety caters to all sorts of dietary restrictions from vegan to gluten free to nut free. Their spicy crispy brussels sprouts ($10) are a nice starter, as is the squash "onion" rings ($12). The local power bowl ($16) is a classic and I've always enjoyed the brown rice and quinoa combo. Their chicken "posolé" is solid, and I love the large hominy bits along with the clear but green tint of a broth. The chicken shawarma bowl ($20) is an interesting mix that includes pickled beets and strawberries, along with their market cheddar burger ($17) and fabulous twice cooked fries. The carrot cupcake is strangely addicting, and I think their gluten free brownie is a bit of a sleeper. Some of their items didn't jive with me previously, such as an underwhelming cashew queso ($9), a semi-laughable Vietnamese steak bowl ($22), and their semi-gringo version of a banh mi ($15). It's not that these items are bad per se, but they definitely don't live up to the same standard that I feel their other dishes do best. Where they hit the biggest home run is their customer service. Everyone working behind the counter does their best to deliver and they almost always do by staying on top of refills, cleanups, and customer greets. I've always enjoyed my experiences here and look forward to every visit.
