My 1997 house was built out of limestone and paper. Well, not really paper, but the siding and trim…read moreare a product called Masonite which has a paper pulp component that does not hold up well in humid weather. A couple of years ago, I replaced the siding on the back of the house and chimney with Hardie siding, but I did not spend the extra money to replace the soffits, fascia and trim around the roof, because that would have cost more than all the other siding combined. It turns out, squirrels like to eat paper, eh, I mean Masonite siding when they can reach it. So there are chew marks on the Masonite trim near the roof where they can perch on the gutters or roof line itself to reach it. At this point, I have gutters up and really do not want to go through the hassle of removing just those boards. I needed some metal flashing the width of the trim and bent at a 90 degree angle so it would also cover the narrow side. Home depot does not carry anything like that and if you have ever tried working with the flashing they have, once you try to bend it (without the proper tools), it starts to look like a crumpled beer can. There was a place in South Austin that did metal work, but when my handy man called them, they would not do small jobs. I Googled "buy custom metal flashing in Austin" and Montopolis supply came up. I called them, explained what I needed. They could form the flashing and custom cut the pieces to the length I needed. They also had a primed metal that would be ready to paint once attached to the house. I also needed an angle trimmed off each one - but had a template I could bring them when I picked it up. They assured me they could handle that for an additional charge. I pre-paid for my order over the phone (minus the custom cuts I would pay for later). They said it would take 24 hours. A few days later - I made my way out there on a Saturday morning to pick up my order. The office is pretty kitschy with lots of religious signs and bibles for sale. The staff was friendly and helpful. Kenneth brought my order to me and took my template to provide the additional cuts I would need. He made those cuts right in front of me. I paid for the extra cutting ($2.50 per cut). He also showed me which screws would be best for attaching to the house and you can buy those by weight (as little or as much as you need). I left with my newly cut metal flashing and a small bag of screws. Next week, I plan on having them installed on the house so the next time a squirrel tries to chew my house, they may need a trip to the dentist.

First, you walk through an outdoor "showroom" where they have mocked-up their offerings by building a little castle, fountain, and columns into a hodge-podge quilt of stone samples. Tumbleweed Tan Big Block and Western Gray Ashlar form part of the wall with Palomino Flagstone on the ground. The "built showroom" is helpful to see a variety of stone types and coursing types. In addition, they have probably 2 or 3 acres of stone piles and pallets to browse through. When you are choosing the stone for your home, it is nice to have a place where you can see many samples out in the sunlight. Second, once you have chosen what you want you can go inside and request how many tons you want. If you do not know for sure, but you know the square foot, they will help determine this with you.The also have Decomposed Granite (DG) and a variety of smaller stones and gravel that can be used in landscaping. Third, you drive your truck over a large scale to the area where they will load it. After your truck is weighed empty, they fill 'er up with stone. You have to drive back over the scale in your truck and believe me, it feels like stepping onto the scale after a big meal at Fonda San Miguel. Now, your stuffed truck has been weighed and you go back inside to pay. Great selection but not the cheapest place in town to buy rocks.

They had a pretty decent stock as elsewhere has been selling rapidly. There's a lot going on at Callahan's as that place is huge. The only issue I had while I was there was there was only one lady working the cash register and there was a good 5+ of us waiting in line at a certain point, and it was moving at a snail's pace. Just that lunch rush I guess. I'll be back maybe for more Webkinz, I guess. RIYL: Feed and thing

I like coming here because it's got that old school general store feel. You know, what it must have been like back in the days of cowboys, dirt roads, and small, one-horse towns. They have just about everything from western clothing to hay, hammers, seeds, household stuff, and more. I had been on the search for a specific style of plant pot for an urban garden project I was working on. I searched high & low looking for what I wanted and couldn't find it. That is, until I tried Callahan's. I went in on a whim, not really looking for said pot, but looking around in general. And to my surprise, there it was! The piece I had been looking for. The fluorescent store lighting reflected around it like a glorious and spectacular display, calling my name. "Buy me, Karla, buy me"...and that I did. Obviously, I left happy. All in all, it's a cool place to check out and to find things you need and things you never knew you needed. Service is pretty great too. Everyone is super friendly.
