So my teenage son got into welding last summer after a class at Laguna Gloria. Normally dad is on point to teach the kids how to do things, but not so much with this. He quickly gained more knowledge and experience than I had, and I ended up in the "drive him places and pay for stuff" position. So he gets a welder for Christmas and then needs some stock to build a welding bench. I tell him to make a plan about what he needs and to find a metal shop and we'll go get a quote and pick Up what he needs. Man, I was figuring he was gonna be in for a rough ride on this one. But the guys at Westbrook we AWESOME. Super patient with him walking through his project, giving him a quote, working on a re-quote, and when the price still wasn't in the dad budget, helped him select some useable parts from the scrap area to work towards what he needed. And when they learned he was just starting out, they said "hold on, we've got some scrap that's too small to sell" and handed him a box with about 10 pounds of small parts and told him to go practice... which he did." (He managed to build a nightstand like table with them... not bad!) Long story short, my son has a new hobby and I will basically go here from now on whenever we need metal or welding supplies, because the level of service is out of this world. read more

First time here. Over an hour to load 18 pieces of rebar. Ridiculous. Has this place never heard time is money. Don't expected get anything done for yourself if you are dealing with these people. I will never be back. The guy in front of me waited over 30 minutes to find out they did not have everything on his order and he had to go back to the counter to get credited. Last week a colleague from Hungary brought us a granite sculpture that needed to be mounted. We found Westbrook via Google and went there to get a long stainless-steel rod. First we bought a 12' 1/2" rod, but when they brought it out, we could tell it wasn't going to be strong enough. So we went inside, canceled that transaction, and bought a 3/4" rod instead. We needed to have it tapped and bent and they suggested Eastside Fabrication for that (see separate review for them). After it was bent and tapped we discovered that wasn't sturdy enough, either. So we went back and got a second piece of stainless-steel rod and had Eastside weld the two alongside each other. We also got a 2'x2' piece of 1/4" steel to put under the rock we used as a base. At the end of the process, everything looks good and is exceptionally stable. We were obviously the amateurs among the customers there, but they treated us well and didn't laugh at us because we didn't really know what we needed. A couple of times they had to void transactions and redo them when we changed our minds, but it didn't seem to bother them at all. I needed some pieces of expanded steel for a DIY project. Rick took my request seriously and didn't ignore my little order. I went to pick it up and, courtesy of heavier than anticipated traffic, I got there 10 minutes before closing time. I don't think anyone was pleased at the timing (including me) but I didn't hear any grumbling. The warehouse guys brought the order out, loaded it, and made sure there was cardboard between the sharp edges and the walls of my SUV. Should've listened to the reviews. I absolutely needed some metal by end of day so I came in at 8:30am and placed an order for 2 square tubes and 2 plates. They said it'd be 45 minutes. Perfect, I thought, I can come in at noon and pick them up. I came in at 1:30 and they still weren't done. The entire day passes and they never cut it. Now they're closed and I don't have the steel that i absolutely needed by end of day. So now tomorrow I'm going to have to go to metals4u and see about getting it when they open which puts me a full day behind schedule. Thanks Westbrook. read more

Worst customer service I have ever encountered. I bought some 5/8" aluminum channel from them, needed more to finish the project. They were out, told me it would be in next Tuesday. I came back, "No, it didn't come in, but it will be here next Tuesday." Nope still didn't come in. So I asked them to order it special, and offered to pay for it. No, that wasn't necessary, it was something they stock, it would be in next Tuesday. Nope, didn't come. The salesman said he would check with the warehouse. Yes, they had it in the warehouse, they just forgot to put it on the truck. It would be in on Tuesday. Nope still not there, the salesman handling this order wasn't there, so they hadn't me off to some woman, who told me to come back the next day. I did, and she looked at me like I was an uninvited guest at a wedding, told me the stuff was "really hard to find, and she guessed they wouldn't be able to help me.' They were however, willing to string me along for 5 weeks. I went and bought $100 of it from Trident Metals (their minimum order) and have never been back to Westbrook. If I need small quantities, I buy from Online Metal. Better selection, better service, no minimum, and no hassle. I will gladly pay shipping in order not to deal with the rude jerks at Westbrook. Actually, that's not fair. Not all of them are rude, they are just lazy and incompetent. read more

This place is awesome! I've come to them several times over the past couple of years, and they've never disappointed me. I usually just order pretty standard stuff (square steel tube, flat bar, angle) but I get a lot of cuts because I don't have a lot of metal cutting equipment, and I haul everything home in my Honda Accord. My projects are normally pretty simple welding and bolt-together jobs. The staff is helpful all around. I spoke to Edie on the phone, and she was able to answer any questions I had. If you want to get the most bang for your buck, it helps to know how they sell the stock you're looking for (standard length/price), especially if you need them to cut it. Figure out the lengths of all the cuts based on that yourself, and the service can be much quicker, and you won't waste money. The guys out in the shop are pretty diligent, and do a good job. I haven't been to a larger metal shop, but you can't beat this one for the convenience, especially for small jobs. I'll keep coming back here in the future! read more

I have been using Westbrook for many years..I like the sales service but even if you call your order in by phone, dont expect to pick it up the same day if they are busy. The sales people need to comunicate with the guys in back about wait times and share that information with thier customers. I called in the morning, told them I would be there at 2 pm. Nice to have a Metal supplier right down the street. Almost always have what I need. Unfortunately, they are a smaller supplier so they can't compete with the larger suppliers prices. worst service anywhere. they treat customers like enemies. the salesman made me come back 3 days in a row and it wasn't ready. he told me he'd call me when its ready, and he never called. i speculate that its coming from the top. the owners seem to be following the lead of the large corporations, hiring less staff, paying them less, making them work more, and hiring less qualified people. the customers standing in line look frightened. you are treated like the unwanted step child, and a customer should be appreciated. i'll never go back. read more
