It's a pretty unassuming spot with just 18 seats. The cutest husband and wife are the staff here and it's a killer deal with $65 and $80 tasting menus. They ask allergies and then away they go. Crazy fresh fish and the night we went fried oysters and eel were some of the stars. The $65 menu had plenty of variety and no repeated fish. The takeout we got from Doma is probably the best we've had from any restaurant in the last few months. I never leave reviews and I feel compelled to with this place. This is the best omakase in SF. Food: SO GOOD! Every piece was delicious, flown in from japan, and made by the owner. The fish was incredibly fresh and the hot dishes were very unique and tasty. I've tried every omakase restaurant in SF and this ranks top 3. Price: Very reasonable. You can do a 65 or 85 pre fixe menu. For the amount of food - both omakase and hot dishes - this feels like a steal. We had a group of 5 and we all left feeling very full. Experience: Feels like you're in Japan, as a guest in the owners home. The owner and his family are incredibly gracious and kind. The ambience is both intimate and lively, with a cute space and music that is not too loud. The execution of the food was very unique. Service was spot on. Came here pre-Covid and had the BEST experience! The couple that owns Doma are the kindest pair and the omakase was exceptional! They made the experience feel so special for us. We were waiting for months for this place to open - I live right in the neighborhood. When it finally did, and we walked in to see if they were serving, we found the owner/chef behind the counter. He did greet me or acknowledge me in any way. I asked if they were open and he just said "yes". I looked for a menu and just saw, in colorful ink whiteboard markers (not legible) "something something" 45 pp. I asked if they had a la carte or appetizers, and he replied as I was stupid and said that they had a set price and he again gestured rudely at the whiteboard. I ended up not eating at this place. The blinds are always down and the prices are insane. It does not seem to be made for the people in the neighborhood, but for those flush with the tech cash. I suppose those of us from here will have to get used to this. :( I really hope for a place where the people who actually live here can eat. read more

I feel somewhere between a 4 and a 5, but rounding up for family-owned and not yet crowded; I can easily imagine this place being really popular in another 6 months. We had the $80 omakase, which came with a mixture of sides and great, but standard, nigiri and sashimi. Don't come here for exotic bits or crazy, mind-blowing preparations: this is the standard stuff (tuna, yellowtail, aji, uni, scallops, crab, wagyu) done really well. It definitely felt like a few of the "running a restaurant" bits are still being ironed out. For example, the pacing of the courses was off, with random side dishes coming simultaneously with the chef's nigiri. The chef and his wife were both very nice. I almost didn't visit because of the complaints in here, but I'm glad I did. Someone is taking themselves rather seriously.... I've been twice now. The owners are funny, charming, and unbelievably skilled. It's creative without being obnoxiously so (that uni custard!) and they are just absurdly nice. It's small, and there are no reservations. Omakase is as much of an art form as it is cuisine. Like art, Omakase experiences vary from person to person. For myself, DOMA strikes close to perfection with its ambiance, food, and service. Camouflaged on the corner of Alabama and Precieta, you would not think at first glance that this store front is a sushi restaurant. A bougie candle store, bougie soap store...maybe! But unless you take the time to read the signage, sorry, you've just overlooked a hidden gem! On the inside, the decor and seating arrangement offers a cozy, charming, and overall quaint ambiance. Unlike your cookie cutter high-end omakase restaurants, the atmosphere at DOMA is refreshing allowing diners to eat with their selves rolled up, elbows on the table, and casually converse at a normal decibel without the fear of being shamed.... As we've ALL learned from Netflix, sushi rice is the make it or break it ingredient. DOMA serves up perfectly seasoned rice along with a variety of tasty fish! Some of my favorites were the scallop with uni, chu turo, sake with ikura, just to name a few. Along with the nigiri, the menu also offers 2-3 small appetizers, sashimi, okonomiyaki, and home-made dessert! All of which were tastier than the next, and of equal caliber to the nigiri. Impeccable service! DOMA is a husband and wife show. There is a sushi chef at the front of the house and someone preparing the smaller dishes and dessert in the back of the house. The cadence of the food was perfectly timed - empty dishes were promptly removed and plate setting was never overcrowded. The husband and wife were incredibly friendly and easy converse with. Most diners at DOMA appeared to regulars since everyone was on my first name basis (challenge accepted!). I've been to many high-end Omakase restaurants both within the U.S. and in Japan. DOMA ranks high on my list and will definitely become a my go-to in San Francisco from now on. DOMA is truly a hidden gem and worth a try! read more

Now in a soft-opening phase, this mom-and-pop Japanese restaurant is tiny, quiet and extremely good. Currently, you can order only from a selection of three chef's specials, ranging in price from $45 to $60 to, I think, $85. The chef starts giving you unbelievably good pieces of sushi. His partner serves drinks and side dishes. That's the whole staff, at the moment. This was a memorable meal. Everything was super delicious. Not cheap, but really, really good. We were there on the night of January 1. Only one other couple was present. It's hard to tell they're really open, as they have bamboo shades covering the window. What an amazing place that treated me and my Fiance like guests in their home! We have been raving about this place ever since to anyone who wants to take the time to hear about it. The food was fresh and there were some very unique flavors that were combined with what we thought was great sushi and dishes. The price is substantial, but we thought it was fair market prices for SF for what we received ($65 menu). We had a great set of conversations with the Chef and his wife about what was being prepared, although, I will admit that some times it was hard to understand the explanation (I will expand on this later). Regardless it was an AMAZING night where we were able to laugh, learn a little about the story of a new local restaurant, and were treated very well. We were given extra items from the chef since we were so inquisitive, and they also gave us some extra sake at no extra charge (sweet). I have read the other negative reviews and I am shocked!! I could see that the chef was a bit shy and his english was a bit mumbled but a little patience went a long way to understand what he was saying and I found him to be really funny and super respectful. Sorry guys but I think this place is great and people should check it out before it blows up! We live in the neighborhood a coupe streets up and finally decided to stop by the place. I enjoyed the sashimi/nigiri served, you can see the effort the owners put into menu and ingredients. Really liked the unpretentious atmosphere and interesting decor, and would recommend Doma as a cute place for a relaxing mid week dinner. As for the few negative reviews about this place... Even though I give this place a 5 star review, I can totally see the issues a few had with variety of the menu, lack of explanation or language barrier. However, keep in mind this place is not aiming to get a Michelin Star or to become the next "it" omakase name in SF. It's a neighborhood restaurant where you can enjoy your food and conversation, and not worry about being rushed out. For $65 dollars you get generous pieces of fresh fish (it's nice big pieces, I even skipped all nigiri and opted for all sashimi, and was full after dinner), and your own space where chef actually doesn't bother you with questions and small talk every minute. Of course if you spend $100-200 per guest, you can get better quality or more one on one experience, but then it will be a totally different level of establiahment and not $65. So as a neighborhood omakase restaurant I totally agree with 5 stars (better than similar paces in Mission, Bernal or Potrero) and will be back. read more

My husband and I went here for a date night after noticing this little gem had appeared at the old Jeffrey's Pet Food location at the corner of Precita Park. We live in the neighborhood so were excited to check it out and were not disappointed. The food was excellent and we had great interactions with the chef, Steven, and Ari, who was helping cook and serve from the back. My husband and I had been to Japan in 2016 and I used to live there in high school and the ambiance of the place reminded me of the little Japanese neighborhood restaurants that I love. Everyone was chatty and friendly and I felt I could relax, enjoy my meal, and have a warm, fun evening. I don't understand the previous negative reviews as our experience was very special and I thoroughly enjoyed my food. I really like this place but it's honestly got too expensive for me. When they opened their Omakase was less than $80. November 2021 it was $120 and now it's $150 plus tax and tip. Yeah, they've made their serveware nicer... but honestly all I want is some good fresh fish at a reasonable price so I can keep coming back often. The place is also a lot less busy than when prices were reasonable. I really hope they realize this and revise their pricing. read more

It was not bad but not impressive either. I didn't understand why music was so loud, and I wish they didn't ask us and other group to move while we were eating when it got a bit busy. Sushi was ok, but everything except salmon was too soft for me. Since I enjoy not only "flavor" but also "texture", akami melting in your mouth didn't work. Another big turnoff was pre-cut sashimi on the cutting board for nigiri. One dish I really didn't like was miso soup. It was extremely sweet. read more

I just moved into the neighborhood and noticed Doma on a walk, it was the 6pm - 10pm hours that got my attention. Plus, it was tucked nicely in the corner of Precita Park. When I was finally in the mood & appetite to spend some time & money, I went straight over. The service was very personal, perfect for a place of that size and surroundings. The food was wonderful, fresh and balanced, and well paced. I took my time because I wanted to enjoy each taste. What an experience!! Doma is a hidden gem that won't be hidden for long with its exceptional focus on quality, detail and unbelievable service. My wife and I have enjoyed plenty of 1, 2 and 3 star Michelin meals around the world, but our experience last night may have topped them all. We enjoyed Doma's Omakase and were floored by the innovative zensai dishes matched with the highest grade of traditional nigiri, sashimi and sashimi salads. Even in a COVID world and eating outdoors, the folks at Doma made this very special with heat lamps and a private cozy ambiance. Each item is expertly made. You're sitting in a circle around the chef. You eat one piece at a time while he makes the next one. Not only was the fish extremely fresh (the toro melts in your mouth and they served some of the best uni I've ever had), but the family who owns and runs the restaurant is simply wonderful. Course after course, our food was served with extreme care and it felt like a family invited us to their home for dinner. It is an omakase only menu with a very limited sake/beer/wine list -- but that means they meticulously select what they serve, and it's all incredible. First rate - go before its impossible to get a seat. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife and the seating is just a sushi bar. The four of us had an excellent omakase that included traditional appetizers, followed by sashimi of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Incredible sushi. Absolutely delectable. The Uni is consistently amazing and the omakase (chef's choice menu) has so much variety, stimulating every taste bud from salty to sweet to umami to sour. The sushi is creatively and artfully crafted. For example - Hokkaido scallops with uni on top then gently caramelized with a blow torch. Sake wine is given as part of the set menu which is a nice touch. Very friendly family running the restaurant. Great atmosphere. Truly a memorable experience and worth the money!!! I came here on a Sunday night right at opening at 6pm and got seats for our party of 4. This spot doesn't take reservations and is first come, first serve; a couple runs the whole operation for total of 14 customers at a time. Parking may not be the easiest around here, so take a rideshare to avoid that issue. We opted in for the $80/per person option that comes with 3 appetizers, 3 pieces sashimi, 2 daily specials, 12 pieces of nigiri, sashimi salad, soup, and dessert. The only other option is $65/per person with less of the items in the $80 option. We also added $12/per person piece of wagyu nigiri from the a la carte menu on their wall. They have a great drinks deal of $200 for 2 people $80 option with Rei Sake which is $25 a bottle. Most of us don't drink much so we just did the $80 meal option without drinks. The appetizers were delicious, every. single. one. The decorations for this tiny spot inside the bathroom and in the whole space was very peaceful, and minimalistic with a main palette of white and greenery. It felt nice to be in there and the light bulbs on the ceiling had roses in some of them - super eye pleasing :) As for the nirigi, they were all delicious! They use half the amount of rice most nigiri use with it flavored so well to pair with every single fish piece. They're also generous with the uni ;) My top favorites were: torched scallop with uni on top, chu toro (always), salmon wrapped with roe on top, wagyu (always), and the sea bream. Some appetizers came with uni too! The dessert was adorable and tasty, especially the vanilla mochi ice cream and strawberry mochi candy. Total was around $121 per person, which isn't bad compared to other omakase spots in the city. They're a small business so definitely support as it is operated all by just a couple! I was going to not write a review to keep this hidden gem just that, hidden, but I figured the world should know about this really great spot. Plus the couple deserves the recognition! I had my 31st Birthday here last night and it was amazing. Their venue is small, only one big sushi bar that sits about 20 people max...? Anyway, I went with a group of 6 of us and made reservations a few weeks ahead of time and told them it was for my birthday. We each get the $80.00 Omakase and order some sake. You can get the $65.00 menu and honestly, still leave pretty full, I just wanted to go for it as it was my bday and all. The rest of the night was just perfect. The music is this random mix of soft 80's and 90's hits with like, random Boys II Men covers, Elton John, and other stuff that actually all hit a really great note and vibe. The ambiance inside is warm, cozy, and intimate. Lights dangle from the ceiling giving the whole place a soft glow. The South Korean couple that run the place are very, very sweet and so attentive. This place really feels like a labor of love. They even brought out a small cake for me AND gave me a nice bottle of sake as a gift, so sweet! Halfway through the dinner, the other groups that were there had left so it was like we basically had the restaurant to ourselves. We sang along to some tunes, kept the sake coming, and the sushi chef was really charming and fun. Food: The portions were great for me and we had a total of maybe 12 dishes...? Ranging from fish (nigiri) to small plates of tofu, octopus, miso soup, and other random things, all super tasty. Probably the best and most affordable (for now) omakase in SF. Get in while it's still not super packed all the time. Great spot for a date or small group of friends! We left the restaurant supremely happy, full of fish, and sake'd out.
