    Signature roll (amazing)

As a big fan of Omakase next door, Okane is an everyday answer to the same high quality sushi. They cut from the same fish as next door, and have a more budget-friendly chef's counter omakase! It's not a big place inside, and they get very crowded, so I'd avoid going at peak times for more personalized service and to secure a seat. Their signature roll with A5 Wagyu is out of this world, with the right balance of salt and richness, all the small plates and drinks I've tried have been great, and you can never go wrong with a good omakase.

Despite the last experience, we decided to give this place a second chance, and it was amazing! The nigiri we ordered were all very high quality, treated with care and delicious. The shrimp nigiri even came with a fried head and that head was amazing, highly recommended! Kakuni was tender and flavorful, udon was also pretty good. They have a wide selection of rolls and they all seem pretty unique. Servers were pretty attentive, atmosphere was casual but cozy. And most importantly....easy parking!! Definitely will be back:)

After a fun coding competition, my daughter was seriously craving sushi. The event food was mini muffins for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch, she needed something way better. Thankfully, my brother (who comes here often) made reservations for us, and it did not disappoint. Service was great from start to finish -- friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. Here's what we ordered: * Kakuni - So flavorful and the pork was incredibly tender, practically falling apart. One of my favorites of the night. * Tonkatsu - The pork was good but not great. It came with miso soup, which was solid, though we've had better elsewhere. * Hamachi Belly - Very good. Fresh and buttery. * Beni Toro - Also very good. Rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture. * Townsend Roll - Good overall, but my daughter wasn't a fan of the shiso leaf on it. * Dragon Roll - Good and nicely balanced. * Kaisen Don - Not sure of the full variety of fish included, but it was pretty good. What stood out most was the rice -- perfectly seasoned and delicious. I found myself finishing the rice even after the sashimi was gone. * Oysters (chef's style) - Topped with uni, quail egg, ponzu, green onion, and caviar. Absolutely amazing. This was a standout. We were also lucky enough to find parking right across the street, which feels rare in SF! Staff was very friendly, service was smooth, and overall it was a great experience. Definitely will be back again.

Came here for my birthday dinner! Everything was incredible. We talked to the sushi chefs while waiting for our food and they were so happy to answer all our questions. Started with the crispy rice and hamachi crudo, which were sublime. Otoro sashimi was melt in your mouth. Sashimi set was so fresh and buttery. Roppongi was super unique it had no rice and was wrapped in cucumber. Rainbow spider roll was really crunchy and so pretty too. Finished with the saba shioyake (grilled mackerel) which came with miso soup! So happy and so full Service was fast at the beginning then slowed down when it started to get busy. Perfect lighting and loved the traditional modernesque decor of the whole place. Loved being able to watch the sushi chefs in action at the counter.

The food at Okane was very good, the fish was really fresh and came out in a timely manner. The ribeye beef skewers were not good, the meat was tough. The chicken karage was also not very good - it wasn't crispy and didn't have much flavor. The miso black cod was delicious, very flaky and seasoned very well. We ordered 2 types of toro, and a variety of sashimi, and multiple handrolls (also very good.) Service was very attentive, the waiters refilled our waters multiple times. The ambiance felt casual but good. I came here for my birthday and while I was glad to have dined here, I don't believe I would return.

Had a great valentines experience here. We went for the prix fixe menu and every course was delicious. The service was lovely, they were understanding that the traffic caused us to be a little bit late, and they have a cocktail menu which isn't as common in SF at sushi restaurants. It's small but nicely designed inside and feels cosy. The only thing I would have liked would have been if they'd wiped the tables between courses.

Walking in, I was seated at the bar near the entrance. Further into the restaurant there are a lot more tables for larger parties, but I went for dinner by myself. It was a bit awkward that they handed me a Happy Anniversary card. I had forgotten that I had put down my ex and my anniversary for the day after I came here so... I was a bit confused initially. But I guess they were trying to be nice. The chef's style oysters were delicious! Super fresh oyster with uni and quail egg and caviar and a little bit of a spicy sauce that lingers in the mouth afterwards. The omakase nigiri had select pieces that were quite delicious but 2 pieces I remember thinking, this is kind of chewy or had a bit of tendon on it. I don't care for eel, but the chutoro and eel temaki hand rolls were delicious. I think it's reasonably priced (at least compared to its sister restaurant next door) if you don't feel like spending $300 pp on omakase.

Okane is spectacular. As a Japanese food connoisseur, this place is special. The fish is outstanding, prices are fair, very high fashion, and the service was great. Amazing place to go if you are looking for proper sushi done the right way...

This place is absolutely mind-blowing... Wow! This review took me a minute to write because I honestly didn't want to gatekeep something this good! If you're visiting San Francisco, this spot is 100% worth the trip! No matter where you're coming from. The service? Next-level. The ambiance.. amazing! Huge shoutout to Uri, Kelly, Robert, and Jeff for making our experience unforgettable!! not once... but TWICE. This place has officially earned a permanent spot on our travel itinerary. If you go (and trust me, you should), do not miss the chef's counter omakase, it's pure magic. And my absolute favorite dish? The hamachi, negi, cucumber, and A5 wagyu topped with caviar and literal SPARKLING GLITTER!!! (Sorry, Marissa... but the secret's out now). Run, don't walk.

During a recent visit to Okane in San Francisco, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. As someone from Hawaii, where we have incredible Japanese cuisine, I didn't expect to be impressed. But Okane truly delivered Michelin-star quality. The fish, especially the bluefin tuna, was incredibly fresh and exquisite. The menu at Okane features a delightful range of traditional and refined Japanese comfort food. From shareable vegetable, fish, and meat courses to rice, noodles, nigiri sushi, and innovative rolls like the Shinjuku--a combination of snow crab, avocado, and A5 Wagyu beef--there's something for every palate. Overall, I highly recommend Okane for anyone seeking a memorable Japanese dining experience in San Francisco.

Leftover shrimp tempura pieces pulled out from our roll
    David H.

We were here a few years ago and enjoyed it, with the nice decor inside that makes you feel welcomed. We ordered the tempura with shrimp and veggies. My first bite of a fried veggie was crisp and crunchy, very good. When I bit into the shrimp tempura, the shrimp was missing that firmness and texture that I expected, it felt powdery, definitely not shrimp! We brought it to their attention and waitress immediately offered to ask the chef to remake them. She explained that they have changed their shrimp supplier and maybe that's why. Our order of dragon roll also included shrimp tempura, they were the same. We still felt the remade ones were still off, albeit fresh and hot and crunchy on the outside. The friendly waitress gave us a large discount on our check for our troubles, which was greatly appreciated.

Was in the city and craving sushi, so I went to come check this place out. This place was Michelin Guided in 2021 so I had high expectations here. Beef Sukiyaki (4/5): It comes with beef, tofu, vegetables, and noodles. It also comes with a raw egg to dip with on the side. The broth was comforting but a bit too sweet for me. I really love the veggies and tofu that soaked up all the soups the beef was also a bit dry. The rice complemented the soup well. Chefs Oysters (5/5): Omg this was a delicacy. It came with uni, caviar, and quail egg. So much flavor in one! Shishito Peppers (4/5): was never a big fan of it but recommend this if you want a bit of spicy for your appetizer. Tuna Crispy Rice (5/5): I first thought this was going to be a typical tuna crispy rice, but the deep fried seaweed caught me by surprise. It included tempura flakes topped with a mountain of spicy tuna. They also added sauce that added great flavor. Shirokane Roll (5/5): This is similar to the Lion King roll, but this one has real snow crab. the snow crab definitely added a unique texture to it. Shibuya Roll (4/5): This includes salmon on top of the California roll. The lemon was a bit much as it overpowered the taste of the other fish. Shoutout to Gigi and Mariza for amazing service and recommendations!

The food was great, but the service was not. We had an 8:30pm reservation, and since the restaurant wasn't busy and several tables were empty, we were surprised by how inattentive the service was. Once seated, our server brought us water and immediately asked if we were ready to order, but we weren't. She never came back, so we eventually had to flag her down. We started with the crispy rice appetizer, which was super tasty. For sushi, we ordered the Shirokane and Shibuya rolls -- both were fresh and flavorful, but the Shirokane was our favorite. We wanted to order another, but after waiting 30 minutes and struggling to get the attention of any server (eye contact seemed intentionally avoided), we gave up and asked for the check. I've worked in restaurants and understand that there can be off nights/things happening behind the scenes, but from a guest's perspective, it felt like we were very overlooked.

My friend and I happened to walk in right at 5 p.m., landing perfectly at Happy Hour (truly, divine timing). But honestly, it's probably the best time to come. We were seated quickly, and so begins our alcoholic adventure. I can't speak much to the fish, but everything we ordered was a hit. First: get the lychee beer. I'm not even big on alcohol, but I somehow ended up three or four rounds in... heh. Anyways, the yakitori (we got pork belly and chicken thigh) were juicy and packed with flavor, and the karaage was crispy, tender, and perfect with the sauce. We actually ordered multiple rounds of everything and left feeling very full and very festive. Overall, Public Izakaya is a gem tucked behind an unassuming storefront. The ambiance, the food, and yes, the beer, makes it an easy go-to whenever I'm back in the city. Consider me a convert!

Every dish felt like it was made with deep care and intention. Our server was attentive throughout. We had a fantastic time. Definitely make a reservation before you go!

Neren Izakaya was a cute little Japanese style izakaya located in North Beach that my bf and I…read moredecided to check out after attending the Yelp torreni flavored syrup event. The izakaya is on the smaller side inside but is very cozy and dimly lit with tons of dark wood tones. The servers are very friendly and nice and were also able to accommodate my sesame allergy and let me know which skewers and sauces to avoid. We decided to get the beef tongue, the wagu beef, the pork and the shiitake mushroom. All of the skewers were absolutely delicious and buttery but definitely are on the pricy side. My bf and I paid roughy $55 per person for the skewers and still left feeling a bit hungry afterwards so definitely keep that in mind if you are coming are expecting large portions that this is more of tapas style small platters. That being said it is definitely worth checking out and the quality is great!

I'm sad to leave a bad review, especially since I've been excited to try this place but honestly…read morewas disappointed by this experience. The food is decent but pretty overpriced. The portion sizes are small too so you won't be full unless you order a ton Warning: they will automatically charge you a "Dine In Service Charge" of 18%. On the receipt, it still asks you for a tip as if there wasn't a service charge already. To me that feels a bit shady/dishonest when it should call out "Additional Tip". Wish I knew and had more transparency before tipping extra on top of it If you do go, I liked their Yuzu Soda, Chicken Oyster, Hiyashi Wakame best. I didnt like their Trumpet mushroom - was a bit too soggy/wet (get the Shiitake instead).

Initially thought the door was locked with a…read morefull house of customers inside and almost walked away but looks like you need to shove the door open. Ambiance was so cute very intimate but not much conversational privacy. Ordered the chicken, wagyu steak, beef tongue, okra, eel, scallop, and pork belly skewers. Also had the yuzu cheesecake. All skewers were juicy and delicious 10/10 every item was a hit. Wagyu was soft and not too welldone, scallop was flavorful and soft, chicken was so juicy, tender, and had strong flavor. Yuzu cheesecake - small light fluffy with a light caramel like sauce - emptied the plate 10/10 Would definitely come again.

Okay back to the restaurant itself. Two words : hella cozy. We were jammed in this tiny corner next to another table of three. So much so, that we may should've just considered combining our space. And that would've been totally fine. Why? Because the food is super worth it, and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Moku is totally cool and whatever the kitchen is grilling will have your mouth watering. Grilled chicken thighs - yup. order two. pork belly - that glaze. yum. bacon wrapped mushrooms - of course it's gonna be good. it's bacon wrapped for goodness sake. croquette - deep fried mash potatoes? yes, please. chicken karaage - much like the croquette but chicken instead. I regret not ordering the chicken meatballs. Although, it does give me another reason to return. Great spot. Good fun. You will mostly likely devour whatever you order at lightening speed. And don't sleep on their beer and sake selection. Lastly, tip your servers well. They're ninja-like service will make it seem like the food and drink are magically appearing while the empty plates and glasses are simultaneously disappearing.
