Deep Fried Oyster

I highly recommend this place. So many varieties!!! Friendly service. Nice ambiance and so clean. I recommend their sides like the oysters and mussels. Their passion fruit drinks are soo refreshing!!!

If you watch the streaming service from NHK World, Japan's version of PBS, you will invariably see a documentary program about a ramen house in Japan and how the owner would spend an inordinate amount of time perfecting their broth. I don't think this is one of those rarefied places. This stretch of San Bruno Avenue in Portola is chock full of budget eateries. Some diners, a few Mexican but mostly Asian eateries. This ramen spot certainly offers a lot of choice - a dozen different ramen bowls, a half-dozen udon soups, lots of rice and fried noodle plates - but my order didn't impress me. I had the $14.95 Tonkotsu Ramen Combo which was a meal set that included a small salad, a couple of gyoza, and three slices of California roll (photo: https://bit.ly/3YDYshW). While the extras were reasonable enough, the ramen fell short starting with the somewhat paltry portion (photo: https://bit.ly/3QAS1dL). There were just two slices of pork chashu, and the noodles were a tad on the limp side. The biggest disappointment, however, was the thin broth. It just didn't quite have the depth of flavor that would've made the other elements more tolerable. Oh well. FOOD - 3 stars...thin tonkotsu ramen but with extras AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...kinda sparse in here, not that warm SERVICE - 3 stars...also not that warm TOTAL - 3 stars...ramen as more of a commodity RELATED - Hungry for ramen? Taro tea

Came in with my wife on a Monday morning it was a bit busy but they sat us quick. The food was somewhat fast to come and it tasted delicious. I would recommend the seafood ramen and the taro tea. The tea also came in a huge glass.

Came here on a Friday afternoon. Checked for vaccination card before dining in. They sat us down next to the window. Restaurant was pretty empty but busy with take out. 「 O R D E R E D + V E R D I C T 」 1. Karamiso Ramen Combo | $14.95: Both combos came with salad, 3pc California roll, and 2pc gyoza. Sides were good. Karamiso is a spicy miso soup base. Noodles were cooked perfectly. Perfect amount of spice. The chashu pieces were really soft and meaty. Overall 4/5. 2. Tonkatsu Ramen Combo | $14.95: The tonkatsu ramen on the other hand.. didn't look too promising. Im pretty sure pork bone broth is supposed to look milky but the broth in the ramen was clear. My friend had this and said it was aight. If you're a big ramen snob, don't get this. Overall, 3.5 stars. 11.26.2021 | Friday @12:40pm

Nice place to grab a quick lunch. Decently priced, large bowls. Great ramen. Quick and friendly service

Chive pan fried dumpling

A great place for breakfast, their breakfast items come with a cup of hot Hong Kong milk tea, my fave! It is not too sweet and the portion is generous. The beef noodle soup was tasty, the rice noodles were round and fresh, it really hit the spot! The rice roll with shrimp was thin almost translucent like I like it. It looked and tasted like it's freshly made and the soy sauce comes separately so you can put as much or as little as you want. The chicken wings had amazing flavor and texture, didn't look like much but it was full of flavor and I was pleased. The leek pan fried dumplings came with a bowl of soup which I didn't really understand, are we supposed to dip it? Luckily we had the soy sauce from the rice rolls and it complimented the dumplings perfectly. Lastly we got the ham omelet which comes with mushroom and cheese; a piece of toast and the crispiest McDonald's has browns. The service was quick and super friendly. The seating was comfortable. I'll be back!

Pleasantly surprised at the experience. $11 ramen with black garlic oil. Super good and hit the spot. We got there past 1pm and it was pretty empty. Food came out piping hot. Will be back. It's located basically as part of a little Chinatown in San Pablo ave.

Braised Beef Stew Ramen w/ spinach, egg | $11.95

"What area in SF did you grow up in?" "Portola." "Oh, Twin Peaks and Forest Hill - that's a really nice area!" "No, we weren't rich! Portola, off San Bruno Avenue." "Oh, near Tanforan Shopping Mall!" "No dear, that's a totally different city!" I'm terrible in geography too but it's safe to say that many people don't know where Portola is. Even on the yelp app, it says, "Excelsior" which is about 18-20 blocks up towards Mission. Yelp moderators, please fix this instead of flagging down our reviews - thanks! Portola is a humble, working-class neighborhood in SF (for now) which is lacking in good food options so Ramen House (formerly Saigon BBQ) is a welcome addition to the hood! TBH, I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised at how good it was for the area. Keep in mind, except for J. Georgie's and Breakfast at Tiffany's, most of the restaurants in the area are divey Chinese restaurant delis and bakeries so it's exciting to have a Japanese food option! Ramen House is currently in soft opening mode and just opened last week. In addition to serving ramen, they have okonomiyaki, yakisoba, udon, don, curry, and bento boxes. Very reasonable prices with most items in the $10.95-$12.95 range. Ramen Combos ($12.95) come w/ salad, CA roll, and gyoza but the ramen portion is smaller. The most expensive item is the Unagi Don for $16.95. Beer and wine license pending. For people with food allergies, they should consider adding food descriptions to the menu items and/or list out the ingredients. My ramen came with narutomaki (fish cake) which is problematic for someone with fish allergies. To start, we shared the Seafood Okonomiyaki ($13.95): https://bit.ly/2FFgCbc. The savory Japanese pancake was chock full of cabbage and fresh, tender shrimp and squid. The okonomiyaki sauce (like Japanese worcestershire), kewpie mayo, and katsuobushi added a delicious salty-sweet-tangy-creamy umami flavor. To be nitpicky, the okonomiyaki's exterior could have been crispier but it was still very enjoyable. For my ramen, I had the Aka [Red] Tonkotsu Ramen ($10.95) which comes with three slices of chashu, a whole egg, narutomaki (fish cake), corn, mushrooms, and green onions: https://bit.ly/2YGfe0J. The aka tonkotsu broth (not to be confused w/ "tonkatsu", fried pork cutlet) was nicely creamy with good depth of flavor and spiciness without being too salty. I prefer my broth less salty though. I didn't get jittery or thirsty afterwards so no msg effects. The chashu was meltingly tender with a good ratio of lean meat to fat. If you love meat, definitely pay $2 to add more. The soft boiled egg had the quintessential molten, custardy center: https://bit.ly/2YJGT0X. Nice that you get a whole egg instead of half like most ramen places. The noodles were a too soft for my liking: https://bit.ly/2I2Vvm1. I like my noodles extra firm and springy but that could have been my fault because I was taking pictures. I was quick though. My sister had the Braised Beef Stew Ramen ($11.95) which I would skip: https://bit.ly/2FOkmsn. More Chinese inspired and the tendons were chewy. I tried a sip of the broth and didn't like it. Service was friendly and our water glasses never went empty which is a huge plus. They're soft opening so expect some kinks. We came at opening so it was empty. It took 15 minutes to get the first bowl of ramen and another five minutes to get the other so your entire table may have to eat separately. I'm sure once they get into their groove, food service will be much faster. The demographics of the area is mainly Chinese so the staff does speak Cantonese and Mandarin. The owner(s) did an amazing job transforming the former Vietnamese restaurant. Super clean, minimalist, and zen with a flat screen tv playing Top 40s music videos. Seating for about 40+. Parking can be a nightmare BUT if you're coming after 5 pm or on Sundays, you can park at the Bank of the West parking lot next door (they close at 5 pm and on Sundays). Overall, pretty solid ramen for Portola and I can imagine Ramen House being packed with neighboring locals once word gets out. Next up, can't wait for the small batch, farm fresh ice cream shop: Churn Urban Creamery to open up across the street!

Ramen combo comes with salad, gyoza, and California rolls.

The much anticipated opening of Ramen House has arrived! After finding out from the Portola Neighborhood Association page regarding this new ramen place on San Bruno Ave, I anxiously waited for news on their opening. I've been to Ramen House twice now and tried different combinations of their ramen. The most value menu item is their ramen combo which is your choice of a ramen, small side salad, gyoza, and California rolls. I found their tonkotsu broth could use a little tweak to make it more flavorful. Overall the meal was solid. The second time around I ordered their Kuro black ramen which was more flavorful. In terms of toppings, they contain a soft boiled egg, chives, mushrooms, and corn at no extra cost. I really do want to see this place succeed as we're now getting all the good restaurants in the neighborhood. Normally I would be extremely harsh when it comes to minor execution issues on ramen but considering all the factors at play, 3.5 stars on the ramen + .5 stars for being walking distance and having a very spacious restaurant gives them a total 4 stars. Staff here is attentive and I see great potential. I just hope I don't have to wait 45 minutes in line when they make it big. Credit cards are accepted. They use a tablet with a Square reader and will run your card at the table.

Nice Ramen place that's in walking distance for Portola, across the street from Imperial Garden Restaurant. Ramen was good, soup is hot just the way I like it but not scalding with plenty of veggies to go with your noodles. The Gyoza and California combo with the ramen was nice too. Fried calamari is good, the breading itself is a little on the darker side so if don't like it deep fried, might wanna skip. The best part of my meal was the Baked Mussels! Big mussel meat and the cheese with the red sauce blended very well. Highly Recommended if you come to visit.

I was by myself and wanted to have a quick eat. This place has unique ramen so I decided to come again (also SF/bay area only in the US). Since I was alone, I got to skip the line and only waited 15 minutes. The ramen was great. I would love to come again and try new one. Their duck chashu is SO GOOD. A little salty but works great as a whole. I respect the kitchen and servers because it's so busy and they are very efficient.

We were a large group of 15, including several kids, and we completely understand that the restaurant is small and accommodating a group our size can be challenging. We waited in line for almost an hour with around 6 children. During the wait, a staff member named Sue came outside, asked how many people were in our group, and handed us menus. Since it was our first visit, we were naturally asking questions and trying to understand the menu. Unfortunately, throughout the interaction, her body language and expressions felt impatient and unwelcoming. There was visible frustration and eye-rolling, which made us feel uncomfortable rather than welcomed. Even after we were seated, the experience continued to feel tense. One of the toddlers in our group started crying briefly -- something fairly common with young children -- and we were told to "keep it low out of respect." While we absolutely respect other diners, the way it was communicated felt lacking in empathy, especially on a busy Mother's Day with families dining out. A small gesture of kindness or understanding could have gone a long way. Instead, my friend felt compelled to take the child outside, which was disappointing. Additionally, after being seated, we had to remind the staff multiple times to come take our orders. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the ramen itself was truly delicious and lived up to the hype. The food was excellent, which is why this experience was so disappointing overall. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because customer service and hospitality matter just as much as the food experience. Unfortunately, this was not the ideal way to end our Mother's Day celebration.

They not only refunded the ramen with the issue but generously refunded the entire meal for our party. I truly appreciate the follow-up, accountability, and care--it made a big difference. I came to Hinodeya Ramen today with my partner, and this visit was really disappointing, especially considering I've been coming here for years. On a positive note, my Tokyo Duck ramen was actually very good, great portion and rich, flavorful broth. We also had gyoza and hot sake, which were enjoyable. Ambiance was a bit noisy. However, my partner ordered the beef sukiyaki ramen, and when it came out, there was a thick, short, wavy hair in the bowl, clearly not something that should ever be in food. This is a serious contamination issue. We tried to get our server's attention, and I understand it was busy, but being busy is not an excuse when it comes to food safety. Eventually, another server came over. We showed him the issue, expecting at least a proper apology or some explanation of what happened. Instead, he just took the bowl away and said a quick "I'm sorry" no explanation, no reassurance, nothing. They brought out a new bowl of ramen, but at that point, the experience was already ruined. It's hard to continue eating normally after something like that, it honestly just stays in your mind. What makes this more frustrating is that I've been here many times before with friends, family, and coworkers, and when everything goes right, it's great. But when something goes wrong, the response is just a simple "sorry" with no accountability or communication. Even on my last visit a few months ago, the broth was bland and the response was the same just "I'm sorry." At a minimum, for an issue this serious, there should be clear communication, reassurance about food safety, and a more professional response. Because of both past and current experiences, I don't think I'll be coming back. I really hope they improve their service and train staff to handle serious situations like this more appropriately.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Bussers were also quick to notice and remove empty plates and bowls regularly making for an easy clean up after we leave and kept the shared table clutter free. Interior was modern, but casual. The ramen is served in large bowls, which looks impressive at first, but the actual portion of noodles and toppings felt underwhelming for the price. At that price point, I expected more both in quantity and flavor. We ordered the Dragon Tantan ramen, which the menu describes as spicy. It wasn't spicy at all. We asked our waiter if we could have a little more heat, and he nodded and brought over a tiny dipping-bowl-sized portion of some red paste with no explanation. There was no mention that it would cost extra. After finishing our meal, we were surprised to see a $5 charge on the bill for the "extra spice." We genuinely thought it was complimentary, and if it wasn't, that absolutely should have been communicated before serving it. The lack of transparency was disappointing and unnecessary. Overall: mid food, mid service, and not worth the price -- especially during such an exciting weekend in the city. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.

If you try to come here around 6-7pm, there is a long line waiting to get seated, but it moves fast. I kept peeking out of my hotel window and by 7:30pm, line was almost non existent, so that's when I went down to get dinner. When I arrived, I was immediately shown a seat inside. You can sit outside too as lots of tables right on the street but it was way too cold for me. Service was quick and I ordered a Yuzu Zen (vegan) ramen. I wanted to try something different than their signature ramen. This ramen was cooked in the traditional Japanese Buddhist temple way, which was a bonus for me. I am a practicing Buddhist and have meditated at various different temple organizations and I enjoy temple cooking as its usually lighter but still very soul nourishing. The broth is lighter and its a vegan dashi broth and comes with zest of yuzu (its like a Japanese lemon), bamboo shoots, crispy kale and sweet fried tofu. I enjoyed this bowl of noodles with soup and the broth was hot, so it warmed me up. I was not really a fan of the inari (sweet fried tofu) as it was just too sweet for me. Service was a little slow towards the end as I was itching to pay and go for an evening stroll, but otherwise, a good experience. I'd come back again when nearby.
