I went here a few year ago and back then the food was great. The items I ordered were not good at all. The shrimp and grits were horrible. I even gave it a chance with the buffalo chicken wings, not good at all. Maybe the barbecue and burgers are still good but I'm disappointed I took a chance on the items I purchased. Sorry trying to catch up on reviews -we went here for dinner last night, as for some reason I wanted to eat some sort of barbecue type food. We've been here before a couple of years ago and the food is pretty decent, however we really enjoyed the food when Dixie Express was still open at the navy-marine golf course. The food was pretty close to the Dixie Express that we used to frequent (of course it cost a bit more than at this location than the Express), but in Hawaii there aren't many options for Bar-B-Q. We are at the three Choice plate which comes with two sides and your choice of meat so we had the meatloaf, the pulled pork, and the brisket, plus since we also like chicken wings, we ordered the appetizer. All of the food was good and even though it was probably price a little high, we will probably come back one day, but I think if you could come earlier in the day, it might be a little bit better because the brisket and the pulled pork was slightly drier then I remember, but the wings were pretty moist and tasty. However it was crowded, as a lot of the people from the Navy base like to come here, and it's a good option if you have no other place to eat BBQ food. read more

I'll just get to the point and say, even with their friendly staff and happen'in dine-in (they were packed, which is "usually" a good sign), I was not really impressed with the 'cue here. Not only was the food disappointing but so was the price. Even if I have friends from the south that swear on this place, I'm left to wonder. I ordered the 3 meat combination with pulled pork, brisket and tri-tip with a side of creole rice and baked beans for take out ($19.25). All three of the meat entrees were bland, dry and in fact, at times, chewy. The baked beans and complimentary bbq sauce tasted like they were a suped up version of Bush's Baked Beans and a spicier version of Bullseye (both I like, but docked points for lack of originality). The part that REALLY made me groan was they tried to pass off regular white grain as their signature Creole rice. The girl confirmed "Creole rice" while calling in my order. Maybe someone screwed up? The nail in the coffin only goes deeper. True, I've never been to the south but I've had great (or at least what passes off as authentic) Southern BBQ here on Oahu - driving out to spots in Wahiawa and Kaneohe from Aiea. Really great place to eat. We spent about 55$ with tip and appetizer. We are from Texas so it was exciting to have some real sweet tea and BBQ. I initially rated this place only 4 stars because my portion of sausage was something a small child would maybe get full off of. BUT they no longer serve the sausage and have since then increased the portion size. If you get a plate from "the smoker" I suggest getting the brisket because you get a generous helping with that plate. For the sides- the coleslaw has a very different taste. The baked beans had jalapeños in them which was interesting and pretty good. The Mac and cheese was very cheesy. The mashed potatoes with gravy was my favorite and has brown gravy. I ended up putting the Memphis sauce on my meat because I didn't care for the other options, but hey, options are awesome. There is a "beach pit" for your keiki to play in while you dine. If you don't mind them getting sandy and playing with strangers. I'm obviously a very lax parent. The atmosphere is laid back, the prices are decent. This was our second time and our last. We had 2 Brisket plates, fish and chips, and the fried okra. The brisket was cold and fatty and seemed leftover from maybe lunch. Out of the small portion, 50% was fat. Fish had absolutely no salt or anything. It was simply fried beer batter on fish. Our son refused to eat it and when I tasted it I understood why it had no seasoning at all, none. The okra was soggy and barely battered. I do not recall it being like this the first time we came. The Brussel sprouts were good as they were the first time patronized this establishment. Our service was half and half. The guy who took our order was personable and patient. The bartender who cashed us out was not and to add insult to injury, when we asked to buy their $8.00 Memphis Sauce, the bottle that she was trying to sell us looked as though it was a dirty bottle that she slapped a sticker on over some other sticker already on the bottle. The cap had sauce around it and the bottle as well. She explained she had to pour the sauce into the bottle. Who does that and why didn't she use a new bottle? If they sell bottled sauces why did the 8.00 $ bottle they tried to sell us look as though it was taken off of a dining table? I do not even think that meets the food safety requirements. HYPES: I came here for the Wine & Design Honolulu event...we literally got to paint & sip. I ordered a sangria and a pulled pork sandwich. I had an absolute blast! I'll just review the food though. The pulled pork sandwich was SO darned tasty! I added some bbq sauce for a little more juice and texture, but even without adding the sauce, the sandwich was sill tasty. Just had the worst lunch ever. My husband and I are both from South Carolina. My hopes weren't as high as our delicious Low Country fare, but having heard great things about this place we were expecting at least a good meal. Dead wrong. The only thing that I would say I liked was the Sweet Tea. After that it was all down hill. Our $4.50 side salads were just chopped iceberg lettuce with some tomatoes and onions. And that "homemade ranch"? Yeah right. Tasted like generic grocery store stuff. From there, my husband got the Country Fried Steak (one of his all-time favorite meals) with the Mac and cheese and also what they are passing for baked beans. Umm, they're basically just refried beans with barbecue sauce mixed in. I'm not sure if this is normal in other places in the south, but I have never seen baked beans like this. His Mac and cheese was less than appealing, and the steak was super chewy. I got the shrimp po boy and fries. I should've known better. The shrimp tasted weird, bread was cold, as were the fries (I could've gone around the corner to Wendy's and had better fries). I concede. Ate everything except for two corn, six potatoes, and two crab clusters. Belly very full, and me very Happy. The crabs were unbelievable sweet, firm and juicy. Almost better than eating fresh off the pier in Washington. The shells cracked perfectly, and the meat came out whole. No problems pulling it out from the joints and knuckles. Spices permeated the meat so that dipping in the butter was not needed. Wait service rivals a Japanese sushi bar. Once I was served, settled they never bothered me. Everything was anticipated. Iced tea was constantly refilled. Lemon was brought out after each refill. Shells were placed in a plastic bag on the table, and the waitress kept comming by to shake down the overflowing shells, readjusting the bag, and refilling my napkins. Like I thought they made a mistake and brought real meat. I'm a big fan of Dixie. One of the few places to get some real, non-korean BBQ in the area. They have a lot of different meat options. Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken, Ribs, Shrimp, etc. They also have 6 different styles of BBQ sauce and just bring them all to your table so you can try them all. I like to get combo plates so I can have different meats and sauces. Their sides and apps are also good. From the bar, their screamin' Mai Tai is HUGE and delicious, don't forget to get the 151 float on top...but seriously, not for lightweights. When I walked in, the decor reminded me of Bubba Gump but these folks are anything but. If you crave some good Southern cookin', this is the place to hang. Their pulled pork and barbeque ribs are excellent and the server brings a container with not one but six delicious barbeque sauces to put on your meat. From North Carolina style sauce to just unbelievably hot sauce, you can choose your favorite. The service is great and having been there at nights, I know it gets way more crowded. It's a great place to come and have a bite. The only downer is their parking lot is a little on the small side and the parking slots need to be painted. Yesterday- Sunday I wanted to try something different for takeout. Dixie Grill is in our neighborhood thought it would be quick and easy. I tried calling to order because I had questions regarding the menu- no one would answer, only a recording telling me to order on line. I choose curb pickup cause I had paid on line and when I arrived the instructions said to call them and they bring it to your car. I called and got same message and had to leave message that I was outside. Nobody called back- nobody came out with food, so after waiting past my 1/2 hr pickup time I had to go inside- no choose! Pick up was at the bar- I saw my food just sitting there, not sure how for how long. When I told the gal behind the bar I had been waiting outside for their curbside, I was told they were busy! She forgot I'm standing right there I can see the two people sitting right there at the bar! I ordered ribs/ dry for hubby, wings for myself, and Mac and cheese w/ pork for third person. The ribs were only ok- tender but did needed something. Usually my husband doesn't go for heavy on the sauce. I ate the wings, they were so-so. I like them spiced differently. The Mac and cheese with pork were really dry but pork was good/ tender. All the food had suffered from the long time sitting behind the bar and a short trip home. Maybe eating in would be better for you if you plan to eat there!
