I recently had the pleasure of dining at Dirk's in Lubbock, and I have to say, their chicken fried steak was some of the best I've ever had! The steak was perfectly cooked, with a crispy, flavorful breading and tender, juicy meat. The gravy was rich and savory, and the sides were delicious as well. But what really put my meal over the top were the sauces. I got to try a few different ones, including the classic white gravy, a tangy honey mustard, and their own special house sauce. All of them were really tasty, and added an extra dimension of flavor to the already delicious chicken fried steak. The atmosphere at Dirk's is classic and cozy, with a real homey feel. The staff were friendly and attentive, making for a great overall dining experience. I appreciated that they made me feel right at home and were able to give me recommendations on other dishes to try. Great Texas beer on tap and this place was busy so the secret is out. Cheese Grits and Gumbo for sides is the move. If you're in the mood for some classic Texas comfort food, I highly recommend giving Dirk's a try. Their chicken fried steak and sauces are not to be missed! read more

Dirk’s - Chicken fried steak - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Lubbock, Texas

Funny story...my husband has been asking to try Dirks for months, but I always kind of poo pooed the idea because I kind of imagined something like Canes (not to say I don't like Canes.) Fried chicken, with a side of fries...maybe bread? Basically an all white, no veggie plate. Joke was on me though. We finally went one night-because it was Father's Day and I wanted to be a good sport...and I LOVED IT! So much so, I've been back two more times since then. I have a thing for the KFC, aka, Korean Fried Chicken, so I always get that. In fact, my mouth is watering and my stomach is rumbling just thinking about it, BUT, I make sure to talk at least someone at the table into getting the chicken fried steak, AKA, steak fingers so I can share. I like Dirks so much, I could go on and on, but instead, I'll just list my most important takeaways. 1. Good food, but go early. It's real food and they do run out of things. 2. I love whole fried okra. 3. The tea is fresh, clear GOOD tea like my grandma made. 4. The house made ketchup is amazing. 5. It's a loud restaurant during peak hours.Think Texas Roadhouse. I can't remember if there was music, but there was definitely a dull roar. 6. My husband kinda wishes they had straight up white gravy. Their's is jalapeño something or other. If you're a gravy purist, you'll need to smuggle some in. 7. They have plain old squeeze bottle ketchup-for picky AF kids who aren't hip enough to try the house made version. 8. There is a bar-if you want drinks with dinner. 9. Don't be dumb like me and sleep on a place like Dirks because you imagine a Canes/Buffalo Wild Wings-type setup. Dirks is NOT THAT. It's Torchy's southern brother...Damn Good Chicken. read more

Food was ok Service was ok Drinks were good Atmosphere was ok Overall ok. I'd go back. What could they do to make it better? Improve the sides. Add more TVs for a better game day/sports bar environment. KFC was delicious, but oversauced. And last but not least, clean clean clean. The floors were dirty and the bathroom was worse (think truck stop). read more

The food was awesome. I went with the less popular option, the rotisserie chicken. The portions were generous and I enjoyed a local cider.

Service, food and ambiance are perfect! Nashville and Korean chicken and special beer... you should try that. Just perfect!!!

Unique atmosphere and great food! We loved all the sauces to try and enjoyed the okra the most! One plate with extra sides were great for 2 to share. Wish there was a backstory on the menu or in the front of the building about Dirk West to learn more about the history of the place and person! Would be a fun addition to the experience! read more

Dirk’s - Steak Fingers, Fries, Mashed Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, Okra, Sauces - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Lubbock, Texas

The only reason I'm giving this a two is because the service and chicken tenders were awesome. I had the combo with fries and some kind of corn. The fries were really soggy and the seasoning was too much, they sucked. The chicken steak was too salty and tough to eat. I also was not pleased with the dipping sauce, it was horrible and the honey mustard was the same. I only ate the tenders and corn, what a waste of money because they are expensive. My wife had some kind of shrimp with grits that looked like a cow patty on a piece of paper not a bowl. I thought that was really unhealthy, so maybe they should serve this dish in a plate or bowl for future customers because I will never eat at this establishment again. Well, let me tell you if you want a nice peaceful meal don't eat here. It's very noisy!!! I should have taken some pictures but at the time it wasn't worth it, I just wanted out of there. read more

Dirks is amazing! Some of the best chicken I have ever eaten. Great food, service, and atmosphere :)

Came to Dirk's at around 2:30pm on a Saturday, and it was like, half-full! That seemed like a good sign, so we stayed. My wife was looking for a salad, but ain't no green happenin' in here. Pretty much ALL fried food. Southern Comfort, folks. The food is delish. All made-from-scratch chicken or chicken-fried-steak stuff, with Soul Food, Comfort Food sides. Fried (longways-cut!) okra, cheddar grits (not very good, too bad), nicely-spiced fries (good), lots of side sauces from which to choose (Dirk's sauce is like a spicy Chick-Fil-A sauce and is good; the Nashville Hot sauce, when on the side, notsomuch.) My only real critique on the whole experience was the automatic 20% gratuity added by the waitress. She was Ok, and I always tip more than 20% because of my large family, but it was just that . . . I have eight children, so our party was two adults and seven of said children . . . and she put grat on there. I will not tip over forced gratuity on principle alone, especially because IT'S JUST MY FAMILY, not a bunch of singles or coupled-up adults. Not cool; lose a star for that. read more

Great food. It's a neat place in the sense that its not your typical chicken strip place. They only serve chicken so if you're in the mood for something else, don't go here. BUT I would always highly recommend. They give large portion sizes and have some great sides and sauces. read more

Our food arrived partially warm. I'm sure it is better hot. We like that you can add yourself to wait list. We ordered fried chicken 4/5, chicken fried steak 3.5/5, Korean fried chicken 4.5/5, chicken tenders 4.5/5. Sides fried okra 3/5, greens 4/5, mashed potatoes 3/5. The most disappointing item was the jalapeño gravy (rather bland) 2/5. Beers and cocktail choices are good. Service above average. read more

best food i've ever had in my life! i come here at least a few times a week to get some chicken, grits, and sweet chili sauce. tea and drinks are amazing too. service is great, atmosphere is cool and casual although it does get a bit loud especially during busy times. overall this is my favorite spot in lubbock, check it out if you want some incredible chicken! read more

I way overhyped this place in my head. We tried to go here on moving day and it was packed. So we ended up going to Spanky's. We finally got to try this place and it was okay. Our new favorite Lubbock dining spot!!! Wow! Their menu is not large but what they do, they do well. Fried chicken at its best! Don't forget to grab some fried okra and french fries they are both exceptional. Everything we had was great! The sauces were an added bonus. read more

Fun place. Their fried chicken (regular and hot) and chicken fried steak strips are very good!! Cheese grits, mac & cheese and collard greens are excellent sides. Everything we've had from the bar is spot-on. There are 2 things that keep me from going with 5 stars: 1.) if you're going to serve greens, you MUST offer old-fashioned "pepper sauce" (you know, vinegar soaked in those little green peppers) 2.) your gravy is not very good. I know there are several commercial gravy mixes that are pretty darned good (not like my grandma's, but close). Homemade would be better. Your potatoes and CFS are too good for your current gravy. (The first time we ate there, I thought maybe the gravy was just having a bad day. Unfortunately, during our latest visit....still pathetic.) Sorry to fuss...everything else is outstanding!! read more

On my second attempt to eat here I actually did. On first try, we ran afoul of their rule against take out orders after 5 pm. OK, now. Food was good. Quite a few southern-based sides that missed the mark. They were good but almost each one tried to do this spicy thing which got old. Maybe a couple spicy side but not 80% of them. Really needed a good biscuit or cornbread to balance meals. Margarita was excellent. Excellent fried chicken. read more

The food is very good, just like Cameron's other restaurants here in Lubbock. Food quality is very good. However, just like his other restaurants, the noise levels are almost unacceptable. Note to Cameron: do something to soften the noise levels in your restaurant, dude, because it is just barely tolerable. read more

Best fried chicken in town for certain. I enjoy the atmosphere, usually the place is pretty busy but service has always been great. In town from Dallas. Heard about this through my friend and stopped by for lunch. All around really great. Started with a Yellow Rosa IPA that was delicious. Ordered the Nashville hot chicken with a side of green beans. Unfortunately everything on the colder side due to our large group but I'm not a stickler. Nashville chicken was a great balance of dry rub and saucy. Cooked to remain juicy and crispy on the outside. Green beans were very cold and just ok. I still enjoyed them though Everyone enjoyed their chicken so I'd recommend this new place. read more

Chicken was good. We ordered the KFC, rotisserie and combo plates. The rotisserie chicken was very good some of the best rotisserie I've had. The chicken strips and steak fingers were very good and not dry which is hard to do for some places. The KFC was both a hit and a miss for me. If these were wings done up this way, I believe it would be much better, as opposed to full chicken pieces. The sauce was good, but a bit salty and overwhelmed the chicken. Waitstaff needs to recognize the mess the chicken will make and bring a pile of napkins. Also don't like it when I have to waive down a waitress to refill my drink. Sides were very good. Some of the best fried okra I've had and I really liked the gravy served with the mashed potatoes and strips. read more

Love their gluten-free chicken strips - best I've found. The room is a bit loud so conversation can be hard, but it's worth it for the food.

This was a great lunch spot. We ate at the bar as it was very busy. The food was delicious. I love the okra! The hot chicken was delicious and had just the right amount of heat to clear your sinuses but not set you on fire. Don't sleep on this place! read more

The food is so-so it's not that exciting, it's pretty simple and fair. Honestly I don't think it's a place to go very continuously

Sunny, sixty supreme vibe which invites a warmth & an all inclusive; "Come on in, relax, enjoy our happy place, embibe with friends & join the genteel folks who beam as sipping a cocktail & guiltlessly douse a perfected, seemingly effortless steak finger into that white, hot peppery, southern fine right gravy!!! Engaged with step one in their hospitality serving, smiley diner as the lovely lady in green behind the counter beamed genuinely because, her smile says she gives with the intensity of the "Little Mermaid" having perfectly coifed bounce back in place hair while being under water & using a fork! You are welcome here is what her eyes and demeanor exudes & I was impressed as this isn't a sideshow & does not drop with cue! All staff portray the same genuine courtesy & pride to be in this spot right now! Seated immediately, dig the yellow patent barstools, all the details with "Mork & Mindy" era, yellow chicken stamped emblem on the glasses & our waitress Bailey was epic & pristine in expediting our orders & southern style charm & smile! The steak fingers, fries with aforementioned gravy which could run like a river through the restaurant for ultimate dipping pleasure at will was truly impeccable on battering, seasoning, crispness & heat & pshaw, shall I mention the gravy again??? Really not a full star deduction but, really not permitted to slice & quarter them up BUT, head scratch on the shrimp & grits... Grits underneath were cheesy yum with consistency solid & shrimp, cooked well & the tomatoes amass of was a stewed congregation & overtook the dish and I shuffled to find redemption & my opinion only feel a lighter, more uplifting sauce would illuminate & brighten the flavor! Adoration & kudos for hospitality heaven & southern spun shine with the steak finger entree as well innovative, inviting environment & engaging staff! I will be back with yellow shoes on for the occasion!!!! read more

Service: Love that they let you call ahead 30 min to check in. It was Parent's Weekend. Crazy busy at 11:25. We still had a decent wait, but food came quickly once seated. Slowed down considerably by 12:30. Hostess was crazy busy, but cheerful and smiling. Waitress was Allie. Cheerful, helpful and kept our glasses full. When my dining partner couldn't eat one of the side dishes, she quickly and kindly brought another. The tea was good, which is important to me. Every single employee we passed on the way out spoke to us and wished us a nice day. Ambiance: Cute and with local flavor. Quirky. Fun concept. Could use some benches outside if there is usually a wait. Food: This is the sole reason for my lower rating. I wanted it to be so much more. We had the shrimp and grits, chicken strips, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. Chicken strips were fine. A touch dry. Honestly, Canes are much better. (Sorry, but if you are going to call yourself a chicken restaurant, the most basic chicken needs to be top notch.). The green beans were under-seasoned, but fine. They were fresh, which was nice. The mashed potatoes were fine. The gravy was a mix of TX white gravy and bacon and jalapeño. I'm from the south so white gravy is flavorless to me. Adding flavor can't hurt, and you were warned on the menu. The shrimp and tomato gravy with it were good. Cooked well and flavorful. But let's talk now about the grits. As I mentioned, I'm from the Deep South. I have made, served and eaten cheese grits of all kinds hundreds of times. These were labeled cheddar grits with no further description, so I expected just that, perhaps a little garlic...maybe stone ground maybe not. The first bite of these was a shock. The person I was dining with took a bite at about the same time. I will add that this person is medically not allowed to eat spicy food at the moment. These were spicy, perhaps a 3/10. Not offensively hot, just the shock of finding heat where you aren't expecting it. But the flavor was also a surprise, and in a very unpleasant way. It had a tangy flavor and perhaps added stewed chilies? I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it was not good and unlike anything I've ever eaten before. I know we are closer to NM and that chilies are used more heavily here than the peppers used elsewhere in TX, but if you are going to change a classic dish like cheese grits, don't sneak up on someone. Say so on the menu. read more

Dirk's is a perfect fine-casual dining experience. The menu is somewhat limited, but they are quality meals. The rotisserie chicken was tender, seasoned just right, and fell off the bone. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak that was cut into strips (like steak fingers). They ran out of okra and mashed potatoes, so he ordered the cheddar grits and loved them. I liked the cheddar grits as well, but I'm a Georgia girl and consider myself a grits snob. They had great flavor, but a bit too runny for my taste. The vibe was good for an evening out in Lubbock especially if you want to enjoy a few drinks at the at or at a table with friends. The food was delivered fast and the wait staff was attentive. This place offers quality food with a casual or dress up atmosphere; whichever your prefer. It might be bette for lunch, but the bar vibe is great for the evening as well. The tables were full and a few groups were having a lot of fun. The acoustics in the place caused the chatter to reverberate throughout the restaurant so it was loud, but everyone was enjoying themselves. Whether you're solo, with a family, on a date, or with friends, it's definitely worth stopping by and giving it a try. The principles here know how to prepare a dish. I loved the fine-casual vibe but I also detect the possibility of an incredible fine dining experience if you wanted one; we might ask them to slow it down if we go back for dinner. read more
