11/16/24 - Short version: the ratings for Diner 50 are spot on. We finally popped in this morning, around 9-ish. Had no trouble with parking, the staff was friendly and quick, the cooks know how to flavor their meat, and the menu is pretty large for such a small place. The decor inside takes you back years, to when times were simpler, movie stars didn't dress like tramps, and the music was heartfelt. Breakfast was great, would like to go back and try something else, or sample their lunch menu. I bet their milkshakes are pretty awesome. Longer version: Don't make the same two mistakes I did about Diner 50; 1) that the business is closed, and 2) that it's a dive with crap food. We have lived in this area for years, and I also worked in the area for about five years. Every time I drove by Diner 50 it looked empty. Well, that's because I just learned today it is only a breakfast / lunch joint. They close at 1 or 2 pm, depending on the weekday. The large juke box in the corner was only 10 cents (I remember paying a quarter, so this was old for sure!). Unfortunately, the only working thing was the flashing lights. There was one 45 vinyl, of Luther Vandross. :-) It took a trip to the restroom for me to notice their countertop was covered in old LPs. There was an old stove in the back near said restrooms, I almost opened it but was afraid of breaking something so old. Ha! The decor is old-time signage, and plenty of pictures of the great actors/singers: Elvis, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean. I ordered the steak and potato bowl with over-easy eggs, sans onions and peppers; my sister ordered the combo (eggs, taters, bacon, toast), plus OJ. The green sauce that came with my bowl was too spicy for me, but let me tell you, even without the onions and peppers, the meat and mushroom mixture so well seasoned and juicy it did not need anything else. It tasted wonderful just the way it was. They did forget my two eggs but then they came out quickly once I pointed that out. My only critique is the parking lot lines. They need to be repainted because they are very faint. If you have not tried Diner 50, give it a go. I do not think you'll be disappointed. read more

The food is excellent as is the service. They could not be kinder or more helpful. My wife had biscuits and gravy that she loved. I had the green chile burger served open faced. The space is an awesome throw back to the wonderful memories of classic dinners. Highly recommended. read more

I ate the Molcajetes for breakfast this morning at Diner 50 & it was REALLY good!! It was served sizzling hot & tasted great! The servers were very nice too!! Our large group of 6 people stayed there talking for quite a while after we finished eating, but the servers kept offering coffee & tea refills, & never rushed us out. read more

The service here is unmatched, the food is above exceptional, they have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and for the cat lovers, a cat room that is free. And the food is well priced. This place is a GEM!! A must try!! My grandparents, who are native to the South Phoenix community, told me about a new breakfast joint that opened in the area. They had never been, but wanted to try. So, we gave this place a try. We went on a Monday morning, which was not busy at all. The staff, which I'm assuming were the owners, were very friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in to the time we left. They told us a little about themselves and where they had came from. They were very knowledgeable on the food and offered their suggestions on meals to try. My grandmother had a great time talking to them about how she was a local and loved helping her community. The food was OUTSTANDING!!! My grandmother and I had the biscuits and gravy meal, which came with eggs, a choice of meat, and potatoes (home fries or hash browns). I had no complaints about any of it. The biscuits and gravy were to die for! My grandfather had the omelette, which you can choose what you want in the omelette. He added bell peppers, cheese, and bacon. This also came with potatoes and a choice of meat. He loved all of it and was glad we finally had the chance to try this place. The outside and inside of the restaurant were very nostalgic! All of the colors, decor, and memories from the past really made this place friendly and fun! Keep in mind, seating is minimal. If you plan to go on a weekend when they are busy, I would try to go as early as possible. I also suggest going during the week when everyone is at work. What I loved most about this place is that it is kid friendly! They had kids menus and activity sheets for the kids to do while they wait. My 2 year old had the strawberry pancakes, which were basically topped with fresh strawberries and strawberry syrup. My daughter LOVED the pancakes so much, she ate them all, including the orange slice that came with it! Whether you are local or visiting the town, you have to stop by this place and give it a try! Great stop for breakfast! Food was delicious, coffee was fresh and hot. Had the chicken fried steak that was very very good. Potatoes tasted fresh cut nit prefab frozen. We went for the first time to try this place out and they insisted on sitting us at the counter. We said table or booth please and because there was only 2 of us, she said the place is small and it's going to be getting busy soon so we couldn't have a booth.. Wow! Cant believe how horrible the food was for the price. The biscuits and gravy were runny and bland. The corn beef hash was canned the potatoes were French fries cut into smaller pieces to pass as "breakfast potatoes" and just the cherry on top to this horrible experience was as soon as we walked out our clothes smelled like I worked a 10 hr shift on the fryer. They also have a cat rescue next door that some how associated with the diner. read more

Went here with my 2 little ones and sister. We're trying out new spots in phoenix and was amazed by the reviews! We took a stop and I'd say the kids portions, amazing! Now I got the burger, it was great, the fries? A zero, SUPER salty and flimsy was not a fan. My sister got the asada bowl and per our discussion and taste it was very oily but eatable. Took us about 45min - 1hr to get our food. Overall it is 50/50. read more

Well where do I start with this hidden little gem, I really appreciate the customer service that was given by the gentleman that served us and the lady working that morning! Both were welcoming and very attentive. I ordered the oatmeal and fresh fruit bowl for the fruit, my stomach was not feeling to great that morning so I was trying to get something not too heavy for my stomach which this was perfect. My partner ordered the BLTA Sandwich W/ Fries which were both amazing, the fresh cut fries were amazing and the sandwich was perfectly toasted! What an amazing find! I was in my way back from a job site and there was traffic so I wanted to stop for breakfast. Walked into this cute retro diner and was pleasantly surprised! Their food is good, but even better they have a cat rescue next door! You can see the baby kitties through the French doors! If you ask really nicely, the owner will even let you come in there and pet them. Be careful though, one of them may want to adopt you! If you don't feel up to adopting, they also accept donations. Adrianna was very friendly and offered great suggestions. First time having molcajete for me and the spicy red version was amazing! Went in for a later breakfast at 11:30 and made a U-turn for the Friday Fish Fry. It was very good, one big piece of lightly fried Bass and comes with fries along with soup/salad. Very friendly and clean diner. I'll soon go back for my breakfast. read more

Went on a Saturday morning and they were busy! But service was very good, somehow, with so many tables for one waitress and one drink server. Breakfast was good. Not over priced. And coffee was...get this...cause even places like First Watch can't do this...coffee was hot! Enjoyed the make your own omelette and lots of ingredients to choose from...even green chili sauce. Just had the Best bacon cheeseburger with seasoned fries at this cute little diner. Decor is cool with the classic diner feel. I wish I had a picture of my plate but took one look and all I was thinking was " oh man" and ate it all up. Service is super friendly and made me feel at home.
