When I was in college many moons ago I went to this place a few times. Never ventures off from the Italian Hot Dog. Man was it good! Most HORRIBLE customer service. They say open till 10pm, but if you call at 8:30 on a Saturday night they're so slow they're closing early and won't take orders. Tried to charge me $5 extra a slice of cheese on a potato sandwich, and cancelled my order. A week later, called to order some pizza, and the OWNER is telling his guys in the background (as I'm "on hold") "this is the same botch that called last week who canceled her order, yeah, same one!" I cancelled my order again, this time not because of the price but because of the DICK on the phone. Who treats customers like they're a pain in the ass when they're paying your bills? Dickie Dee's Pizza is a deceiving name. Everybody that goes there, knows that you go there for the Italian Hot Dogs. This is a place that runs in my family. My grandfather used to bring my father and my uncles there when they were kids growing up not too far from Schools Stadium. Now, my father has passed it down to me. I can honestly say that I remember the first time I went there. Staring into the grease that was cooking my dogs/potatos, made me very excited. I ordered an Italian Cheeseburger. It was Ok. The cashier was very suspicious of me. I didn't know that this was a Cash Only spot. They have an ATM machine in the restaurant. I used the machine and I took out $20-two ten dollar bills. I went to the cashier and I said, I want to pay for my food. He repeated my order, and said $17.85. I gave him the two ten dollar bills. He gave me $2.15 in change. I waited for my food while he served other customers. I looked at the cashier and said what happened? He said did I get your payment? I said yes, I gave you two ten dollar bills from the ATM machine. He said oh ok I'm just asking. He started serving other customers food that arrived after me again. I began getting angry. Finally he said, here's your food. It was clear that this cashier didn't believe that I paid for my food. First of all, get a debit/credit machine and an updated cash register so that we can get a receipt. Then you would know if I paid or not. It was INSULTING for the cashier to hold my food back because he thought that I had not paid for my food. I didn't enjoy my Italian Cheeseburger. My friend enjoyed his chicken cheesesteak. First time here, don't know what took me so long. Classic!! Everything is done right in front of you as you order. Single dog, potatoes, onions, hot peppers, mustard on the bottom, ketchup on top. So I've heard about this so called great place to eat. Unfortunately how would I know. They were pretty witless if you ask me. Asked them for an Italian Hotdog told them no mustard or Ketchup. They replied 'so everything on it?', we responded with, 'Yes, with the exception of Mustard or ketchup.' He sounded bewildered and said 'you do want everything on it though'. For the third time, 'Yes, except mustard and ketchup'. Then we moved on to a Double cheeseburger. But we asked 'does fries come with that?', he responded 'I don't know'. I want to give it 4 stars, but maybe i just dont like these italian hot dog sandwiches as much as I want to. The great thing about it is, it's better than Jimmy Buff's which gave me heart burn for 2 days. While the double combo gave me some heart burn about 10 mins after eating it (and another plain slice might I add), it didn't give me long lasting pain. I really like this, i think i would like it more if i did two italian sausages instead of a hot dog and a sausage, and they had some hot sauce in it. the potatoes are real good, the onions are real good, and unfortunately, i don't like peppers. The bread was real good too and soft but that could have been from the grease. Another note: your clothes will smell like grease for days, so dont wear anything you like. Fantastic loaf of Italian bread, stuffed with slices of hot dog, onions and peppers and spicy mustard, topped with deep fried potatoes that are topped with ketchup. Best Italian dog-note perfect in every way. They are also the only Italian dog palace that I've been to that uses a natural casing hot dog. If there are others I would love to know about them. Every time we came in, there was one staff member that would sit in the corner and angrily stare at me and my mother without a greeting. My friends who are Jersey natives tell me that Jimmy Buff's has the best Newark Dog, but Dickie Dee's is a place that just oozes with so much tri-state charm it's hard to imagine a finer establishment to enjoy such a treat in. Upon my first visit a customer who previously ordered and left came back to the store asking if his dog was ready yet. The gentleman behind the counter grabbed his crotch and exclaimed "I got it right here, buddy". So if you're put off by such things, this place is certainly not for you. This place has been around forever and is a staple in the hood, especially known for their Italian hotdogs. Sadly it's not what it used to be when I was growing up but I still stop in once a year to get my Italian hotdog fix. The potatoes never taste fresh anymore, always stale, hard, and dark. The place has not changed on the inside for as long as I can remember, so it does look kinda dirty these days. As far as the pizza, it's not even worth ordering anymore... Dickie Dee's is one of the names most often heard in the competition among the area's best hot dog spots, and with good reason. IMRHO, better than Rutt's and certainly better than Jimmy Buff's; that's good enough to take the crown. As much as it is a hot dog institution, Dickie Dee's is a living, breathing throwback to the North Ward of Newark in the early 70's. Do even the best of the hot dog spots really excite me? This is about as genuine and authentic a New Jersey eating experience as you can get. I am a huge fan of Italian hot dogs, and to me Dickie Dee's has the best Italian hot dog there is, bar none. The bread is perfect (from another NJ favorite!) as are the onions and peppers. But to me, it's the potatoes that put them over the top. I grew up in Newark and going here was always a treat for me, watching the food cook in the oil from behind the partition. The neighborhood has changed, but Dickie Dee's hasn't. I walk in and I'm 8 years old all over again, from the autographed Frankie Valli picture on the wall, to the "Keep Dee Feet on Dee Floor" sign. (Side note: Frankie Valli even gave a shout out to Dickie Dee's when I saw him in concert a while back.) I'm glad Dickie Dee's is still here because places like this are few and far between. Definitely a NJ bucket list place if you've never been here. read more
