I was told by the jerk who answered that the order was NOT placed with them, that I'm mistaken because they're about to close and then proceeded to hang up on me. Absolutely horrible attitude. Decided to venture out and take a drive to try a classic in the north ward of Newark. Heard a lot about this place and the Italian Hot Dog in general. Needless to say, it did not live up to the hype. While I'll give it to them that the dogs tasted pretty good, the rest of the sandwich was terrible. There's way too much bread and fried potatoes that make the sandwich very dry. The peppers and onions really did not add anything to the sandwich either. I would pass on getting it again. The customer service also sucks. Got there and stood around while the guys behind the counter were talking amongst each other. Took about 5 minutes to even get acknowledged and asked what I was going to order. read more

When I hear native East Coast friends rave about sandwiches with the word "Italian" in it I know it's worth a try. I had no business being in Newark, but was actually surprised by the # of Spanish restaurants that kept popping up in my searches. I was in town on a layover detour strictly for Dickie Dee's. A sandwich on an American style fry bread/pita with fried potatoes and fried hot dogs. Cash money is the name of the game and it's not unheard of to wait a good minute in line. The location is small, very old, not dingy, but certainly not modern. Great exposure to natural light. Service is pretty good, albeit sloppy. They are not east coast rude for the sake of being east coast rude. They are certainly in the name of keeping it OG being it's 3rd generation owned. Price point is still very good and those potatoes really fill you up. The bread is not standard pizza bread, it's not standard pita, it's almost like a fry bread, but slightly more loaf ish. It's cut and the middle cut open for filling. This is crucial to avoid the typical "blowing your back out" which is common in armature burger eating and "blowing your bottom out" when overloading typical hotdog buns. It's moist, sturdy, yeasty. It stands up to all that oil from the fried inners. The hot dog is fried to a level just before ripper. 2 are put on the bottom with mustard, fried onions, peppers, then fried potatoes equivalent to half a large russet then ketchup. It's very filling, even the single. It holds up to the what feels like 1 pound mobile feast. I honestly thought the potatoes would have some seasoning on them. They are kind of bland. You have to get the peppers and I would have liked some sautee'd onions and not fried for more crunch. I didn't get to try the pizza's but can say the cold subs were blah and the only hot sub that caught my eye was the sausage parm which instantly reminded me of a traditional ragu and I liked it more than most chicken parms. Apparently their version of "cali" is lettuce, tomato, raw onions, mayo and ketchup. The tomato and ketchup combo is really more popular in Utah, but your probably not going to sell any Utah Steak's or Utah Burgers. Weird how they did diced sautéed onions in my burger, but not my Italian double or single dog. It's pretty hard to specialize in this Italian dog, cheese steaks, burgers, pizza's, cold and hot subs. Stick to a few and you'll be around another 60 years, otherwise no one will order the cold subs which was apparent in talking with locals. They only get a handful of items, ever. If I'm ever in Newark again I'm coming back. IF. IF you are ever in Newark you too should stop by. read more

Yeah...yeah...yeah! I'm normally not a huge fan of the overstuffed Italian Dogs because I really can only eat just one and I like a little variety when I'm having hot dogs for lunch. Normally... A few weeks back I FINALLY got to try the famous Dickie Dee's here in Newark and I was very, VERY happy I did. Four of us ran out for lunch and we all basically got the same thing - the Famous Italian Dog...A piece of delicious pizza bread stuffed with hot dogs, fried potatoes, onions, and peppers. Slather on some mustard and a dab of ketchup and you're eating a whole meal. Seriously, I could only eat one... I've tried Italian dogs other places-even some of my favorite hot dog joints, and I'm usually just ok...they always seem to be missing something. Not At Dickie Dee's...I don't know WHY this one is better, but it is. Crispy potatoes, onions and peppers with a really nice flavor, Dogs that were done perfectly and the bread was...well, it was just the right amount of soft/hard that you want with an Italian Dog. This sandwich might not be the best for your cardiovascular system, but it will make your taste buds do a happy dance. No frills and good food. That's what you come here for. Prices were good, as were the portions. I had a single sausage with peppers onions and potatoes and it was definitely enough! Everything from the bread the sandwich was stuffed in (pizza bread) to the sausage was delicious. There is a reason this place is a cult favorite. Just got back from a Newark-Bloomfield Ave. food tour, courtesy of my boy who grew up around the block. Our first stop was Dickie Dees. Though I've had their dog before, I wasn't able to fully grasp the wonders and beauty of this Newark classic. My first intentions were to order both a slice and dog, but things changed as soon as I stepped into this legendary establishment. The pizza that sat around didn't look appealing so I passed on that, but I saw a whole pie come out and that looked dope. I opted to go with the combo. That's an Italian hot dog double, except it was one dog, one sausage. The end product was amazing but I think it's the process that was enjoyable to watch. Once you put in the order, the cook grabs a dog and sausage and throws them into a pool of oil. The potatoes, which are sitting beside the oil are slid into this dunk tank. After a few minutes, when the food starts to float, they stab it with a mini pitch fork and start to assemble the massive work of art. The bread is lined with mustard, then the dog is stuffed in as the first layer, then the sausage, the onions, peppers, some bangin' ass fried potatoes (oil and all), and topped off with ketchup. I guess the proper way to eat this is to take the first layer of potatoes off with a fork. Once you tame this beast by breaking the heaping layer down, you can actually eat it like a sandwich. I've never been a real fan of Italian dogs, since the ones I've had before were terrible. I can now see why this Newark creation is so great. The total of this dog was $6.15 tax included. Hefty price, but it is definitely a meal. read more

Dropped in at Dickie Dee's the other day to finally try one of their Italian Style sausages. WOW, this thing was massive. It was put in a huge roll with mustard, fried onions, peppers, FRIED POTATOES, and then topped off with ketchup. I didn't know how I'd feel about topping a sausage with all of that, but it tasted fantastic. I couldn't finish the thing, but it all clocked in at about $6.00 with my drink. The most surprising part to me was the potatoes. I figured that it would all end up feeling very dry and bland when you tossed them on top, but they were really tasty. Love this place! My dad's been taking me here since I was 5. And now I get to share this experience with my 5 year old son. I've been getting the same thing for years; a double with everything on it and a slice. There is no where, and I mean no where, you can find better Italian hotdogs than here. When I lived in the west coast, this was one of the places I missed the most. There's really something special from eating somewhere and something that can transport you back to your most fondest childhood memories. The decor has been the same for as long as I can remember and I love it more that way. I really get a joy out of supporting local businesses. Their pizza is probably the best Sicilian slice I've had in Jersey. I love how they've definitely stayed true to their family recipe. If you're ever in Newark, you must try them! Italian Dogs are the East Coast version of a San Francisco Burrito; a self contained meal. A piece of pizza bread overflowing with fried potatoes, onions and peppers. And somewhere in there you'll find a hot dog or two. OK, it's not so much an East Coast burrito, it's more like a ticking time bomb for your cardiovascular system. In concept, it sounds awesome, but I haven't found something that lived up to my expectations until today. Most places I had been to, something felt lacking. Either the potatoes were mushy, oily, or both. The starch on starch combo of mushy potatoes and bread is not pleasant. Other places, the onions just lacked flavor. That was not the case at Dickie Dee's. The potatoes were crispy, as twice-fried potatoes should. In fact, I don't think that the potatoes were particularly greasy. The onion had flavor but it was also well complimented by the peppers. And towards the end of the meal, you are greeted with the snap of the hot dog casing, the hot dog wasn't over-fried so it didn't have the acrid overcooked hot dog taste. Greasy pizza, but so, so, so good. It's dirt cheap, and despite the artery-clogging-goodness that makes Dickie Dee's so - unhealthy yet loveable - the cheese on the pizza actually stays on as you eat. This is quite unusual for such a sloppy peez-a-pai. Italian hot dogs are not quite as greasy as Jimmy Buff's and almost as good. The area really isn't that shady, just lock your doors, and don't drive further into Newark than you need to. read more
