Meh service. Staff is on the more nonchalant side and seems overwhelmed with online orders. Placing my order went smoothly. When I finished placing my order, I had to wait 5-10 minutes to pay. In that time, another customer placed their order, I had a phone call, and extra time to doom-scroll. After payment, I waited an additional 30 minutes for pizza to cook, and it never showed up. It was a red flag because Blaze takes 20 mins end-to-end, even on busy days. I waited so long that employees announced there was no eating in the dining room 1hr before closing. That defeated the trip to Blaze, so I asked for a refund. Funny enough, my pizza was hidden underneath the prep station the whole time fully cooked. If I had received it, it would've likely been cold; that would require a refire/refund anyway and extra time. Man was this place popping for pi day! 11 inch pizza with unlimited toppings for $3.14, I'm in! The wait was around 1.5 hours. Was it worth it- moderately. I ordered a build your own with spicy tomato sauce, Riccota cheese, Parmesan cheese, fresh mozzarella, mushrooms, roasted broccoli, basil, roasted garlic, fresh minced garlic, red onions, pesto drizzle, arugula - I think I killed it with the spice (should have left off the fresh minced garlic) so spicy but sooo good! Pretty decent pizza. I remembered I had won a coupon to come in for a free pie up until the end of the year that I won from a jersey city event. Being in that I'm never in Newark unless I'm randomly going to the courthouse for work or the airport I jumped on the opportunity when landing around dinner time this week. The set up is interesting. It's very much an assembly line like Chipotle or Dos Toros but it runs the same style of pizza as Ampersand pretty much. You can either do a 'make your own creation with unlimited toppings' or go for one of their already pre-made selections. Given that I was carrying a heavy bag and dead tired I just went with one of their pies that was already constructed - The Green Stripe (Pesto, chicken, red peppers, garlic, mozzarella, arugula). They ask if you want any alterations and I was like load it up on extra cheese. Toppings: Variety of sauces from marinara, spicy red sauce, white sauce, and garlic pesto. Tons of cheeses, meats, veggies: bacon, chicken, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, salami, chorizo, ham, artichokes, variety of peppers, mushrooms, olives, pineapple, fresh herbs, spinach, etc. etc. I will say that I wasn't crazy about the texture of the chicken and it was kind of rubbery. I liked this crust better than ampersand's. It held itself better the next day and didn't turn too hard or stale being reheated. Slightly crispy but not overly crispy and thin crust. The pesto tasted amazing with the mozzarella. Ingredients could be higher quality and fresher maybe but else-wise I was pretty impressed. read more

Not only do they have a gluten free crust option, but they are very careful about cross contamination. All the employees who touched my pizza changed their gloves and they used clean utensils and a separate pan for mine. I felt very confident eating here as someone with celiac. Has some really good spicy tomato sauce, so it's the only pizzeria where I'll buy a pizza with tomato sauce (usually go for creamy or pesto based sauces). First time I came however, the bottom of my pizza was burnt. Subsequent times the bottom weren't as burnt, or wasn't burnt at all. This is the first make-your-own personal pizza joint I've been to and already my most favorite. The idea on its own sounded so inviting, but I was quite amazed by the quality of its taste. It is a bit of a wait (~10-15 min) so you'd think you have enough time to pick what ingredients you want, but by the time I got to the counter I was winging it like crazy. My pizza still ended up pretty good (spicy red sauce, grilled chicken, artichokes, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, pineapple, spinach, and mushrooms). I liked that you could add whatever kind of drizzle too. There was buffalo, pesto, bbq, and one other. I chose buffalo and it was kind of spicier than I expected, but still delicious. The crust was thin and crispy at parts, but not burnt. If you get full easily, I'd suggest getting the combo (half a pizza + salad), although of course the full pizza is more worth the price. The setup here is like most of the trendy higher end fast food places ( i.e. Chipotle). And just like Chipotle it's different options you choose from to personalize your pizza. For a beginner like myself I was glad to see they had some signature pies to base mine off of because I was a little overwhelmed at first glance. I was meeting my mother for lunch and she's been here before so she knew she was going to get the white top and I decided on the meat lover. Both extremely good but in different ways. The white top was an Alfredo sauce with bacon on top and than arugula! The meat lover was the red sauce ( I didn't realize there was a spicy red till after ) mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage and red onions!! It's about 8 bucks per person which isn't bad because it a great size personal pie !! I paired it with their blood orange lemonade AHMAZIMG!! For my 100th review, I choose Blaze in Newark to review. Yes, for my 100th review! Which tells you how I feel about Blaze! I believe the only Blaze pizza I have yet to visit is the one in Clark. I have to say of ALL the Blaze chains in NJ the NEWARK location is the most dedicated team of hard working people I have encountered. I've read a few of these negative reviews and let me just say this, food service is hard. Very hard. People are picky, evil, mean, demanding and sometimes down right impossible. I frequent Blaze because, damn, I LOVE pizza. Particularly, this style of pizza. I'm pretty much a self labeled Pizza Snob. The last Blaze location I visited was the Livingston branch. It was a Living effin nightmare. I had bragged all day about Blaze to my coworker and convinced her to come with me on lunch to try it. I had explained the experience so she knew what to expect. Little did I know, I didn't know what to expect. It was horrid. I was personally embarrassed by the sloppiness of this location. Sauces mixed in together. No gloves while adding on toppings or cheese. Crap all over the floor. It was mortifying. I couldn't apologize for the terror my co worker experienced as I convinced her not to call the Dept. Of health on them. I had to make this up. I'm a foodie. A food reviewer working on her own food blog and recipe site. I was NOT going out like this in her eyes!! The line at any given time can have 10 people in it and the wait will literally be about 40 minutes. I recommend ordering online and picking up because it's way faster than standing in line. I came in late night and couldn't be any happier with the service I was provided with. Nicki was absolutely a pleasure and made some AWESOME pies! I was making a pie for my boyfriend and they let me try different toppings and gave me suggestions on what would be good. I asked for extra mushrooms and they LOADED it up!!! The service was fast & friendly and I couldn't have been happier. I went to get rung up by Jeffrey who was just as much of a pleasure as Nicki! He was enthusiastic about his job and very politely up sold me on some desserts (rightfully so because they were incredible)!!! Blaze is such a welcome edition to Newark! It's conveniently located near NJPAC, Prudential Center, and Penn Station. On a warm day, you could grab your pie and head across the street to Military Park. I typically start with one of their 8 pie ideas and then customize it. Tonights order: art lover (artichokes, mozzarella, ricotta, chopped garlic, red sauce dollops) with no ricotta, add roasted garlic, garlic pesto around crust, and drizzled with pesto when out of the oven. Soooo delicious! The pie is $8.25 and lasts me two (small) meals. The Blaze experience takes about 5 minutes if there isn't a line. With a line, it's maybe 7 minutes from start to finish. When you pay, ask for a drink and fill your cup with the blood orange lemonade. Make sure you pay with the app and earn flames towards a reward! While Blaze is pretty perfect in my eyes, I wish there was some consistency when it comes to the pride their employees take while building my pizza. I want them to build my pie the same way that they would build their own...with love. I am almost always happy, but I've had two occasions where my pie was thrown together.
