A great selection of soups always available. Pricing is fair for DC/West End/GWU. Service is cafeteria style, pick your sandwich, soup or salad and take to a limited selection of tables. Salads look great, as do the sandwiches. I have only tried the soups and can recommend them. Across the street from GW Hospital emergency department, so you will hear a lot of ambulance sirens. The place looked well set up with all the sandwiches displayed, unfortunately all the sandwiches we ordered were very dry and hard. Chicken soup looked good, but it was luke warm. Dunked one of the sandwiches in the soup to soften it up, but one should not have to dunk the sandwich to make it manageable unless of course one likes their sandwiches like that and I'm sure some people do...To wrap this up I would not recommend spending 8 to13 dollars at this place when you have so many place near by with very delicious soups, salads, sandwiches and coffee. read more

The food was good enough and I'd give it three stars, but you're especially paying high prices for pre-made food made of better ingredients. At least Jersey Mike's slices your sandwich to order, but here the sandwiches are made ahead of time and if meant to be hot reheated in a toaster much like the ones you see in Subway. This place is awesome for breakfast, lunch, coffee and desserts. I'm a big fan of the egg & cheese on croissant; and the avocado & sprout sandwich for lunch. DON'T GET THE CRAB CAKE SANDWICH UNLESS you love corn (which I do not) from the outside the crab cake looked amazing, but when I bit in I got a mouthful of corn (disgust!) and the sweet potato fries (aka chunks) served with it are cold. One of the top DC chains that I know of for daily soups, salads, and sandwiches, I'm always recommending Devon & Blakely to out-of-town visitors when I pass it. Though the food isn't terribly creative, the sandwiches are handmade daily, the salads are tossed in front of your eyes, there's always a wide variety of soups (that can be incredibly welcoming during winter). It's a lunch place that while a bit more expensive is worth the price for both vegetarians and omnivores. In particular the hummus and avocado sandwich, with pine nuts, on seven grain bread, and the avocado and English cheddar sandwich, with sprouts, on seven grain bread are both hearty vegetarian sandwiches. read more

Delicious! I'm a very discerning critic, and sandwiches usually bore me to tears, but I've made the 10 block hike in the cold and in the rain for sandwiches from Devon & Blakely at lunch. It's gourmet, the prices aren't terribly ridiculous considering the area and the quality. The selection is admirable. The crabcake sandwich is good, and so is the tuna sandwich. I also tried the cauliflower in the "by the pound" section and it was delish. The employees are nice. I reserve 5 star reviews for places where the price/quality/food/innovation knock me off my socks, which it didn't, but it's very good! read more

I'm always happy to see a new lunch option in the Foggy Bottom area, so I walked into Devon & Blakely hoping for the best. My first impression was that the place was incredibly chaotic. With several separate lines for sandwiches, salads and soup - and several employees in each of those areas taking orders - I thought their "system" was a mess. I ended up with a cheddar/avocado/etc sandwich - sounded tasty but it was really dry and uninteresting. And on the menu it's about $7 but the clerk charged me $9 because she thought it was something else, and then didn't know how to cancel the order and charge me the right price. The redeeming feature of this store might be the soups - there are like 15 each day and they looked yummy - but between the chaotic ordering, the long lines, the mediocre food and the overcharging, I'm not likely to visit again for quite awhile. read more

Great place to grab a quick bite to bring back to the office. My co-workers love this place. I used to get the blackened chicken sandwich like I was an addict. I love the flavor, but I've stopped getting it as often in part because during the busy hours, I think they are not taking enough time to warm up the food. Another minute or two would be better. The soup selection is great and the cornbread is a must have add on. I appreciate that they are attentive to people's food concerns. The manager of the place is very responsive and showed lots of concern when I came to him asking to see the ingredients of the salad dressing (I was having some reaction). The main struggle for this place is its layout. Unless you come here regularly, it might not be clear the order of operations. I've had a sandwich or two of mine claimed out of order. I love their bread bowl soups, prosciutto and fig sandwich, avocado cheddar sandwich, and crabcake sandwich. They also have a solid drink selection; it's hard to find a place that has Diet Mountain Dew in cans. The only downsides are that there is not enough seating and they close early. read more

I had their Cuban pressed sandwich and it was delightful. Their environment was absolute chaos during lunch, but that shows that it's a good spot to eat. I have to order Devon and Blakeley at least 3 times a month for work orders and I have been so frustrated and disappointed with their delivery service. 3/4 times they get an order wrong and I have to call to have them bring the correct order. I even have the guy repeat everything and they still make mistakes. I've complained several times about this and as a frequent customer, you'd think they go out of their way to resolve the problem, but I was just hung up on! This is a solid place in the DC area for a gourmet sandwich and high quality soup. My favorite is the gourmet turkey breast with brie, spiced chutney, arugula, and red onions on a pumpernickel baguette. The chicken and dumpling soup is delicious too! read more

Been here twice, hoping that they would improve. They did not. Sandwiches are completely overpriced and terribly made. Awful taste, awful selection. Staff is friendly enough, but when i came in no one spoke english. From what I understand people like soup or salad here. Don't get sandwiches from here. It makes me sad. Mozarella, Basil, and Tomato on baguette, is a tasty sandwich, $7 for a full sandwich so you're better off getting a half sandwich and soup. Clam chowder and chilled Gazpacho soup are stand outs, good hearty flavorful, $5 for a small but reasonable serving size. British candy bars are unrefrigerated and way overpriced at $2.50 each. Overall an OK soup and a sandwich shop but they should stop pretending to be a Pret a Manger in London. read more

HORRIBLE experience today at D&B. The guy that takes lunch orders over the phone is rude and rushes to take your order which leads to be inaccurate. If they can not handle the volume of calls during lunch they need to either hire more help or not take lunch call-in orders. They delivered the WRONG thing to my office and I called back to have them change it the same guy was SOOO RUDE and NASTY. Poor service. When they came to bring my actual order they asked for the wrong order they brought . Just a rude horrible experience (for the food to be completely over priced). They should definitely have a meeting about customer service or get rid of the guy that takes lunch orders. read more

The variety and quality of the food is great. They have more ready-to-order soups than any other fast-casual restaurant I've ever seen. Their already-made sandwich variety is also plentiful (and tasty). The prices and managerial attitude, on the other hand, are different stories. Prices are very high considering this is an "in and out" casual type restaurant. I'm referring not just to the $10 sandwich but also to how D&B nickels and dimes you for absolutely everything. One day, after ordering a $10 basic quesadilla, I was directed to the refrigerated area to pick up my salsa and sour crème. I was surprised to find out that these were $0.75 each ($1.50 total) extra. One would expect sour crème and salsa to accompany the quesadilla in much the same way that ketchup accompanies fries (would you expect to pay extra for two packs of ketchup?). When asking the manager about this, I was told that "[he] has to pay for sour creme and salsa, so why shouldn't [I] be charged for them?". I'm not being charged for plastic spoons and napkins, so the line has to be drawn somewhere (and very clearly, in a different place). Another day, I ordered a regular coffee. The coffee had just been made and the sleeve-embedded cup was still too hot for me to carry. I asked for a second cup to place underneath but was informed that this was $0.50 extra. Seriously? I'm not some random person walking in off the street not purchasing anything and asking for a cup. I'm telling you that the coffee is too hot for me to carry and you want to charge me so that I don't burn myself? The management's attitude on this nickeling and diming also serves to reinforce to employees why "the customer is never right when it comes to incremental surcharges" mentality is so prevalent. Even though the food is good, I expect to be taking the $20 it normally takes to purchase a lunch here to a much nicer restaurant, probably for the same cost. read more

I've been to a couple of locations of Devon and Blakely and have thought it was okay in the past. Since I live near the Foggy Bottom location, I go fairly regularly. Some of the items are bland and some are good. My problem with the place is that I bought a soup yesterday and when I got home to eat, I found a hair in the soup. I didn't want to walk all the way back over and show a hair in the soup. I went back today to ask for a free soup since I didn't eat the one with the hair in it. I brought my receipt to show that I had purchased the soup. The employees seemed a little confused. A supervisor came over to address the issue. There was no apology or anything, she just told someone to give me a soup. It was a smaller size than I had paid for the day before and the whole time she was fairly rude about the issue. Not the end of the world, but if you're not concerned about having a hair end up in your soup, I'm not going to trust what's in the soups and sandwiches in the future. read more
