Ok. Wow. I went to Deuxave for my birthday recently. It was a monday night, and my boyfriend and I had gone out for cocktails and deluxe bar snacks earlier in the evening, so we set our reservation for 8:30. Of course the light snacks at TT bar were too delicious to pass up so we ate waaaaaaayyyyy too much and were planning to maybe just do entrees at Deuxave to keep our stomachs from exploding. I never want to be that girl who has to unbutton her skinny jeans at a restaurant because she let her gluttony get out of control. Long story short: I ended up being that girl. It was just too good.
I'm lucky enough to have known the GM from a previous job, so of course when he heard it was my birthday, the "entrees only" idea was tossed out the window. We started with two glasses of pinot from the nicely varied list of wines by the glass. Both types were delicious, each from a different end of the pinot scale-- one sweet and slightly acidic, the other deep and earthy, smooth. We ended up ordering one starter that looked too good to resist-- a duo of beef tartare with wagyu carpaccio. They sent this out pretty quickly, along with the duck confit starter, which I didn't initially have any interest in. Boy was I mistaken. I'm not even a big fan of duck, but I will come back just for that confit. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the Bing Cherry Sauce was just tart enough, not too sweet, rich but not heavy. The beef tartare and carpaccio was beautiful,too-- light, refreshing, acidic-- melted in my mouth. I was already getting full but I picked the duck bone clean! So delicious.
Entrees came out quickly after apps were cleared, and Jason, the manager, offered to pick out two glasses of wine to compliment our dishes. He's a fantastic sommelier, and he knows what to pair with every aspect of the meal--definitely ask for his advice! I was craving pasta, so I got the housemade tagliatelle with bolognaise sauce. Oof. It was really satisfying. The pasta was nice and hearty, done al dente, and the sauce was so.. I guess 'crisp' is the word? I don't know, it's been forever since I've had pasta bolognaise that wasn't greasy, heavy and basically made out of heartburn. At Deuxave, though, it tasted really fresh, like they just killed the cow in the backyard next to the vegetable garden where they grew the tomatoes and carrots and all. Not a very big portion, but it was rich so it didn't need to be. My date had the Persian Spiced duck breast. I was too full to try much of it, but the wild mushrooms were fantastic, the peach paired with duck was surprisingly well matched, and most importantly, it didn't remind me of the duck confit starter at all. If I were a huge duck fan, I could get the confit starter and duck breast as an entree, clean both plates, and not be bored of duck by the end of it. I found that impressive.
By dessert, it was time to loosen my belt. I got the chocolate napoleon. It was seriously decadent. The chocolate ganache layers were like flourless chocolate torte, set between multiple flaky and crispy layers of... something delicious that was sweet and little savory. It came with a little scoop of chocolate ice cream-- awesome. I tried to finish it but failed. My date had the real standout dessert-- a warm Apple Cider soup! In the center of the plate was a peeled and cored whole apple, that I assume must have been baked and seasoned. At the table a server poured warm apple cider into the bowl from a teapot-- very classy show. It came with some caramel sauce and three little apple cider doughnut holes. It was to die for. I can't stop talking about this dessert, that's how good it was. Get it while the apples are still in season!
Ok I know I'm rambling, but I just have to squeeze in a bit about the ambiance. The restaurant is gorgeous. Wine bottles line the higher portion of the walls, neatly displayed. There's a fire place in the center of the room, candles along the windows, great view of mass ave. The tables are really large, which is nice--plenty of room to spread out. The room can cater to a romantic date, a business meeting, casual chit chat, anything. The service was great- swift, clean, not stuffy but not too casual. Very friendly.
Bottom line-- it was everything I wanted for my birthday, and I can't wait to go back. read more
