I went in with my 13 year old daughter who was asking about the new set of Pokemon cards and I guess the "Manager" (shouldn't even be called that) Justin was his name? Was super dismissive and paid more attention to the male customers instead of the female ones...We have been in card shops before and this sort of vibe is the norm unfortunately but here it just felt almost forced. The selection here was impressive according to my kid, but unfortunately that's not gonna change my mind. I was heading to Desert Sky Games to make a several thousand dollar purchase, but called in advance to be sure they could honor my tax exempt status. The employee who answered was pleasant and assured me it would not be a problem. A few minutes later I got a call back from a manager, who I believe was the store owner Michael Bahr. He told me they would not accommodate the sales tax exemption and rudely berated me with demanding questions. I explained that I was not looking for any discounts, I would be paying full retail price, but my organization is legally sales-tax exempt in Arizona. He told me that "your tax issues aren't my problem" and "we don't care if you shop here or not" and "we don't need your business." He then hung up on me. I called back and a different employee answered. He sounded a little embarrassed when I asked if he was the one who hung up on me. He said, no, it was his manager and transferred me back to him. I explained again that we were not looking for any special prices and that I had all of the paperwork that Arizona required to purchase tax free with me. He told me again that they were "doing just fine without your business and had no interest in doing extra work because you won't do your own accounting." That is a close but not exact quote. He said that sounded like my problem and for a final time stressed that they didn't care if I shopped there or not, rudely laughed at me, and hung up on me again. I sent a follow up email to the store with a simple one line note saying that I was serious about intending to make a very large purchase and received a response from the the store owner that "I'm still trying to figure out why you think we want your business." Full response from the owner is in the photo. I am appalled and shocked by this owner's attitude and that he blatantly turns away business, though it looks like if I had read reviews first I might not have been so surprised. It was my first experience with this store, and I will never be back either to purchase or to play. I can't imagine how many budding card players may have decided not to pursue the hobby because they do not have a welcoming store close to them or they had a bad experience with this owner. read more

The setup of the store is configured that the front half of the store contains their merchandise for sale while the back half has tables for gaming events. Some items I saw while browsing were a few versions of Settlers of Catan (Dice game, original board game, card game, no expansion packs for the board game though), a Howard the Duck comic book, various Warhammer models, obligatory Pokemon merchandise, and the ubiquitous Magic the Gathering cards. read more

We have been in on multiple occasions in the past with no issues. Today we went in needing to return a deck box because the double-sleeved deck would not fit. From the moment the manager walked out to "handle the return" he was confrontational, essentially accusing us of lying about the deck fit. He made us wait for almost 10 minutes while he grabbed a mostly unsleeved stack of 125 cards to show us that they 'fit just fine'. Horrible experience. We will not be back. I bought a GBA game with the box and inside it wasn't even right game. I didn't realize it sooner but still they made it seem like it was original game and everything. They also over price in a lot games and they say well we do a lot of discounts which is not true and even if they take 10 percent off the game is still like 300 plus over priced. Customer service is horrible. Went in to buy singles and spend a good chunk of money. Wasn't aware they closed so early. Had over $100 in my cart and still more to go. Guy walks up to tell me I have five minutes to put in my order and it needs to be small. Excuse me? So I emptied the cart and left. Then I called and spoke to someone different who tells me to understand were we are coming from. Ummmm, I've managed retail. I know where you are coming from and NEVER ONCE have I treated a customer like that. That is your income. That's what pays your bills. If I ever heard one of my employees say to a customer what both said to me, they would be written up. Especially if they were going to drop some cash. I will be spending my money elsewhere with someone who appreciates it. read more

Desert Sky Games is moving soon and I hope that with the move they will be increasing their board game selection, which used to be much bigger. We have purchased many board games here. Their sales are great and we have tried many new games from their clearance rack, priced under $15! They also have a fairly large selection of sleeves. Lost of 2 stars because of customer service. Every time we visit this location we typically end up spending over $100. Last week when we ere in we spent $170 on board games and sleeves. The man behind the counter was impatient with my husband as he looked up what sleeves were needed for a certain game (there was no line - what else did he need to do?) and did not even bother saying thank you after we checked out. The service and selection at Game Depot FAR exceeds this location; however, for many of us it is much closer to our homes. I hope this store, especially with the move, can commit to appreciating the board gamers, like us, who visit and spend money there. read more

I can't count the amount of time and money I've spent at this establishment. I remember going to DSG in 2012 when they were located in Gilbert, next to a sushi restaurant. I've met multiple employees and different owners and attended many MTG prerelease events. The glory days are gone for me. The final straw was my most recent visit to pick up a prerelease kit for Double Masters 2022. Mike Bahr seems genuine because there was a simple miscommunication error and he made things right for me when I drove to the store to pick up my packs. My issue is with his employees. The feeling I get when no one bothers to offer help or greet people when they walk in. I had an employee there argue with me that there is a difference between buying something and purchasing something. It's stupid stuff like this that forces me to spend my money elsewhere. You can keep my stars DSG, I won't spend my time or money here anymore. read more

This is by far the best place that I have ever visited to purchase Magic The Gathering cards. Their prices are good, the selection is great, and the service is knowledgable and very helpful! I have visited this store a few times while building my most recent deck and received great service every time! The last time I arrived, I was looking for a total of 4 cards which I had visited multiple shops to try and find (including this one previously). They were just uncommon SOI cards, but highly desired so it was a pain to find them. The employee helping me took the time to look through the cards that had yet to be sorted to find what I needed. I will be bringing my friends to this shop whenever they are building decks and look forward to attending their FNM's or Drafts soon. read more

I've been here twice to pick up board games and hobby supplies. Neither experience was awful, but told me that I should go elsewhere -- I will be driving the extra 15 minutes to Game Depot instead. It might be a great place to go for MTG/etc or if you are a regular, but not for anyone else. My first experience, the employees acted like I was bothering them when I asked a question about paints. The second time we went to browse and saw that they price-matched to Amazon -- we picked up something small and asked if they would be willing to price match at the checkout and found out that the policy is only for items $35 or more. Neither time did any employee actually acknowledge us until we looked like we were ready to give them money. My third experience with them was when I asked a question via Facebook and got no response. As I said before, not awful, but there are definitely much better places to go. read more

Just getting back into board games so I can't even remember the last game store I was in and didn't know what to expect at this one. I like that this store is in Gilbert because I want to support my local stores whenever I can. Update June 2018 at some point they moved to Chandler. So much for the local game store. I was surprised that the selection of games was pretty small considering this is a dedicated game store. All of their games were on one side of short aisle as soon as you walk in the store. The last aisle by the gaming tables was strictly Warhammer merchandise. In between the aisles were miniatures and paint supplies and playing mats and some 80s video games cartridges and systems. They have a pretty good selection of Star Wars X Wing/Armada if you need ships. There was a lot of table space to play games which is great. This was my only visit so far and I just didn't find anything I liked. I was looking for some very specific titles though, not just genres of games. I do A LOT of research on a game to make sure I'll like it before I purchase so I already had a list of games in my head and knew what the prices were. I decided to make my purchases online with someone else because they had everything I wanted. I certainly don't mind paying $5 to 10 over Internet prices, but you might want to know those prices going in. One game in particular was marked (I'm sure at MSRP) and it was literally a full $40 less online. I would definitely stop by again in the future to check for games. I also happened to go to Game Depot in Tempe and they have a significantly larger selection. Every game I looked at there seemed to all be at MSRP. They also have a miniatures case with painted miniatures from local artists so you can have them paint your items if you'd like. I find that the prices in both stores are comparable to buying online (in most cases) IF you include the cost of shipping and you factor in shipping time if you have to have something right now and just can't wait. read more

I'm down visiting from Salt Lake and was looking for a place to kinda nerd out before I went back to my in-laws. Walked in and immediately loved the atmosphere. The workers were all friendly and greeted me as I came in and were helpful answering questions. Big point for me were the screens set up on the wall streaming Twitch with a MTG tournament on. Everyone that came in seemed to know each other and the friendliness and comradery was infectious! I'm usually a quiet watch from the far corner of the store person but with the store's atmosphere I felt welcome enough to come and learn some new games and talk with the players. I was greeted at the door (twice actually) where they explained how their store was laid out and asked if I needed help finding anything. The staff was jovial and had no aversion to small talk and pleasantries. I went in looking for comics. They have new and recent releases on the wall, and back issues in boxes at the end. The back issues (thankfully) are actually organized, unlike other places. The prices were fair and include tax so they're a flat price, which was nice. They asked just slightly higher than my other favorite local store, but again, it was so slight It didn't bother me. Overall I'd definitely go back. For me, half of the experience is knowing that I'm supporting a business that appreciates its customers, which is, based on first impressions, what I surmise to be true. read more

I went here on vacation looking to get my Magic: The Gathering fix on Friday night. Whenever I play at a new store the first thing I look at is the quality of player I will be playing with and at DSG it was pretty upper tier. With over 40 people competing in the weekly tourney the skill level varied, but the better players were the kinds of people I would want to travel with to bigger events. They understand the game deeply and would be willing to help anyone sincerely looking to get better. The store has a Magic event running almost every day of the week with different formats for each night, as well as the option to draft or play standard for the FNM tourney. Prize payout was to be expected from a capped four round tourney with the option of turning your prize packs into $3 each for store credit. The ability to use this credit to purchase any item sold within the store was a wonderful bonus. My MTG addiction could fuel other games desires I has as well. There were some things that I did not like. I wish the staff would have recognized me as not a "regular" and informed me of the special services they offered for the event. Instead of being able to get in on the $5 pizza & soda deal, I was left taking my money to another business for some mediocre food instead of being able to continue to mingle with the new crowd of people. All in all this staff were friendly, even coming to talk to me individually after finding out I was visiting from the area where they were from in IL. If I were living in the area they would absolutely have a repeat customer, and frequent player. I give them 5 stars because I could see myself playing there at least 3 times a week without ever having a problem with the staff or local players. read more

I had to talk with the owner and threaten to beat his ass before he would give my son the cards he scammed my 8 year old son out of. A pretty laid back tabletop gaming store. My wife and I stopped by during a weekday when business was quiet, to look for a certain D&D board game. We found that the store has a lot of tables and open space for miniature games and Magic tournaments. Most of the inventory is at the front portion of the store -- a massive selection of board games, card games, and comic books. There is also a modest selection of inventory from Games Workshop, which is great considering there is no longer a Games Workshop operating in the area. This store seems to bring in most of their revenue from Magic: The Gathering tournements and card sales. The front counter is basically a huge glass display of rare Magic cards that can be purchased individually. The rest of the inventory seems to be marked up from what you could pay on Amazon. This includes pretty much all the board games, and some of the Games Workshop merchandise. While it would make more sense to just order a game on Amazon, I would personally pay the extra few dollars to support this locally owned business, and to potentially meet some other gamers to sit down and play with. The staff was nice, they acknowledged our visit and made us feel comfortable to ask questions. There were also a couple guys playing a session of Warhammer 40k, which was nice to see considering they did not know eachother prior to the game. I'm not too social of a person, but I got the impression I could closely spectate and even play the next game if I had brought some figures. Overall I had a good visit, and I'd like to return to buy something else and maybe talk about gaming with some other folks there. read more

DO NOT SELL THEM CARDS/GAMES!!! Long time, if infrequent customer of DSG. Finally decided to post a review after my sell experience was similar to other friends who have been complaining on Facebook. Took in a collection that was cataloged and pre-priced and got a 7.2% cash offer. No, that is not a typo. The store manager gave us a 7.2% cash offer. (industry normal is 30-50% cash). Left in shock. An hour later, I had a normal cash transaction completed with another store up the road for 33.7% cash. Took the problem to the owner (thinking of course there's a mistake) who I know personally, and what I got told was that he can get away with what he's doing and because of that, doesn't think there's a problem with how he's doing business. In that moment, it occurred to me that the sheer volume of people complaining about this persons bad business practices in spite of his apparent intelligence and ability were all correct. If you're wanting to sell used ANYTHING, go literally anywhere else. You have been warned. read more

After a few bad experiences here, it's actually now my go to LGS. I like the crowd, and a few of the judges/workers. It now does semi competitive payouts and while it's def not the best selection of singles in the valley it does have some. They do make you feel welcome, and it is the largest play area I've ever seen with tons of tables and seating. They have a small game collection but the main focus is Magic the gathering, and some table top games/dnd. read more

I have played Magic The Gathering off and on for 10 years, and have been to MANY game stores. This place is NOT the place you want to come. I have tried this place a few times, and it's just really uncomfortable First, as a girl, all the guys looked like they had never seen a girl before. I was gawked at and hit on, I couldn't really even play! I was so upset. I tried playing Friday Night Magic here, and they really don't know how to run a tournament well. There were many players there that take things way too seriously and are not friendly or clean at all... that place smells incredibly bad. I also have heard from friends that the store has a severe theft problem and several people's cards have been ripped off. Also, the store owner, Jay, was rude, unfriendly and just unpleasant in general. Their singles are also all overpriced. In all my years gaming, this place has to take the cake for the worst experience of my life. Stay away, especially other gamer girls, and anyone who values your card collection.
