My group and I were in town for a Star Wars qualifier that one friend was participating in. I've been to several Game Stores in LA, SD, and Washington DC, and this store has definitely topped the list! Not only was the place clean, but they had good pricing, and the most pleasant staff I've ever interacted with in a game store! My wife even informed me that this is the most comfortable she's felt interacting with folks in a Game Store. My most favorite thing they sold, that my wife and I bought 3 of, was custom pre-made decks, one for MTG Commander, and two for Star Wars Twin Suns. I've never seen a Game Store sell custom pre-made decks constructed by the staff. Really cool concept that more stores should do! I hope to come back to Arizona just so I can give them more of my business. read more

This place is awesome! We just discovered it a few weeks ago & have been back 3 times. Great atmosphere! You're welcome to hang out, watch d-backs games, and try out a game from their vast library. Or compete in a tournament! Huge selection of games to choose for purchase. It's so nice to be able to try them out before you buy. The staff is friendly & welcoming. Love the Funk! Been going there for several years now for the majority of my Killteam and Boardgame needs. The staff is chill and knowledgeable. They seem like down to earth people and are always willing to help you and/or chat with you. A few years back my toddler threw up in the store and I was wildly embarrassed but Mike was super cool and understanding about it. Probably not a big deal to them in the scheme of things but this small act of being understanding toward an over-tired/worked new parent meant the world to me and Funkatronics will always get a strong recommendation from me. read more

They have a section of public games free to spend quality time with and I have personally traded board games with them. Super friendly and a refreshing oasis of Geek in this desert. Plenty of room and high ceilings. I can spend all day in there. read more

Called earlier about a Pokémon event earlier and the receptionist was surprisingly rude, and was only directed that details would be on the website. On entry, this is definitely a gamer's shop. Several tables are set up for board and card gamers, while towards the back end of the shop there are several war gaming tables. To the right of the entry is the cash register, a display case with various merchandise and cards, and then on the same wall are shelves stocked full of board games. Being a gamer, I should state that I do everything from collectible card games and board games to role play games, and even the deep end of the spectrum, Wargames (Favorite). My criteria for what makes a good game store is selection play surfaces and staff. Selection: In viewing the selection of the store, I love the vast selection of different board games, however for my table top hobby they simply don't compare with some other vendors in town. It makes sense though, as a gaming shop you cater to your folks, and I get the feeling that Warhammer isn't their main sales point. Play Surfaces: They do have a few tables to play war games on, and from what I've seen, the scenery looks great! There are plenty of tables to play board games as well. While I was there, some folks were playing Magic, and others were playing dungeons and Dragons. Staff: The staff is great! My buddy and I came to play some Legend of the Five rings and a couple other games. We left our stuff there so we could get some grub and asked them to watch it. We returned and our stuff was fine. Furthermore, they are knowledgeable about most of the games there and ask questions to figure out your gaming ability. They want to sell you games, but they want to sell you the right games. If you haven't played very many advanced games, they might offer a similar game that gives you a step up. If you need help understanding the rules, they will help. If you are playing a game and they have a special on an expansion addition, they will let you know about it. Their salesmanship isn't just to sell more product, it's to make sure the product they are selling is what you are looking for. Overall, I gave this place a 5/5 because they are really great at what they do. The staff is friendly and courteous, and they support the games they sell. The only downside is their miniatures don't quite compare with a few other competitors in Phoenix, but for their Niche, they do a great job of catering to their customer base! read more

Mike, the store owner, really is a great guy. The shop is clean and friendly. Whenever I go in, I know I will be greeted well, and I am always going to leave feeling like that shop cares about me, not just my money. Mike knows a lot about magic, but not everything. This shop is good for those who know magic and can look through very organized binders to get what they need. Mike keeps up with the inventory really well as well. Mike's specialty, in my opinion, is the board games. He knows them really well, being able to recommend three games for my style and budget and I LOVE all three of them. He will take the time to sit and teach you how to play. He also has a large selection of games to play for free just to build a community. Overall love it all. This is my prioritized store by far. My son and I showed up for Friday night 7pm draft. When we arrived, the woman at the counter asked us for our DCI numbers and signed us up. We had 30 minutes to kill and she told us the taco place next door had epic tacos and would deliver them over to the store. We swung by and sure enough the tacos were epic and they delivered them to us while we were drafting. Everyone at the draft was really friendly and the whole thing was pretty well organized. There were enough players to field two pods. The talent of the players ranged from beginner to near pro. We fit somewhere in the middle and had a great time. Game play was casual and relaxed, so mid level and beginners were comfortable - people who are hard core may not like it as much. Prize packs are simple - one round victory equals one pack. We played three rounds. At the end we also scored a foil promo card. We left around 11 having had a great time. The lady at the counter said goodbye to us by name. We promised to come back. The store itself is really great. They have a wide selection of games and though I don't know anything about model table top games, the tables in the back looked pretty elaborate and I think they seemed pretty cool. There is lots of room to play and there are even loaner games if you have time to kill between rounds or just want to hang out. All in all, it was a pretty cool place and I'd endorse it wholeheartedly. read more

Awesome. I didn't know it was here even though I live in the area BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE A BUILDING SIGN (subtle hint), so I've been driving past it when I've been in town in complete ignorance. Saturday night I had dinner with an old friend whom I've been gaming with for over 30 years and he told me about Funkatronic Rex, Monday night my wife and I dropped in, and also dropped some bucks. This is an awesome game store. He packs his games in tight to maximize space for people to play and provides a really good gaming library for people to borrow games to play! Too few stores provide a game library for people to check out other games that they don't own, though I see more game store libraries and this is a good thing. Very good lighting, definite bonus. I think parking might be a problem, so if you're bringing a group, I'd suggest car pooling. One nice thing about this location is they're just down from a good pizza & sub sandwich place that's priced reasonably, so you're not going to be suffering from hunger during a long gaming session. And if the GM won't give you a break, just call and they'll deliver. I've been gaming for four decades and started working in game design three decades ago. I've seen a lot of game stores in a lot of states - this one is definitely cool. Check it out. read more

This is a great independent game store in a convenient central location. Everyone is really friendly and they have an amazing selection!
