Derby salon is a cute little spot located in Roosevelt. I had a 7pm appointment on Wednesday which was perfect for me since I work until around 5pm in Bellevue. When I walked in I was greeted by the receptionist and she got me a glass of water. My hair stylist, Enoch, was very professional and made my hair look amazing! I've been a client of Derby for at least ten years- maybe more. I've seen many stylists there-not because I'm disloyal but because I'm lazy and don't schedule appointments until I'm in the panic mode of I NEED TO CUT IT OFF NOW. I've never had a bad cut there, and everyone is super friendly and unpretentious. Laura was my stylist tonight and she was lovely and took her time and care even though I just asked for a trim. Came in after a stressful 2 years, asking "let's keep as much length as possible". KC, amazing as always, says "ok, we're going to need to take about 4 inches off". We do that. And he says "let's schedule another visit, just in case, before you leave again". Sure enough, he was right - he respected my wish to keep as much length as possible, but could tell that there was still some damage that needed to be removed. After my first wash, I knew he was right, even though my cut looked pretty darn good as it was. So back I went, and magic occurred! The rest of the damage was taken out, and somehow, he made my super-fine, super-straight, super-flat hair look beachy and bouncy. Trust me, it's not because I'm good at styling my hair, this is all about his ability to give a good cut. I'm now in the land of the hot & humid, and my hair looks great (just like it did in Seattle, the land of the cool & humid). I've been to Derby Salon for haircuts in the past and it's been a pleasant enough experience due to the convenience of the salon, but I will not be coming back. I booked an appointment at 3 in preparation for a haircut prior to an important evening event. I arrived at 3 and was given a cup of tea, which was great. However, no one came to get me until 3:45 and there was absolutely no apology or explanation offered. The stylist was obviously running late because she cut pretty hastily, and then just stuck me under the dryer and took another customer into my chair. I never even had the chance to look at my haircut in the mirror to go over it with the stylist before I had to leave. As it was, I was still late to my event. Given what I had paid, it seemed a pretty shoddy experience, so I'll try one of the other nearby salons next time. read more

I LOVE DERBY!!!!! My roommate recommended them to me when I was thinking about getting 10 inches of hair cut off. I made an appointment with Jefflin. On the day I got there I was totally freaked out about cutting all my hair off - but she was so nice and reassuring that it would be a good thing. Then she cut off my ponytail and even posed for pics before, during, and after. She even got me a bag to put my hair in (I donated it). She gave me the cutest bob haircut ever. I keep going back and am always pleased by the cut and the service. They are so nice -always offering water, tea, and wine. Reception does leave a little to be desired but Jefflin and the rest of the staff are so great - and they have a dog too. I totally recommend Derby. read more

I love derby! Dana is an amazing hair stylist and even though I only get my hair cut two or three times a year, she always remembers everything about me when I do go in and really puts up with my HUGE amount of hair. I took my boyfriend to her too and she did a great job that he was really happy with for a great price since it really only took her a couple of minutes. I also have gotten my eyebrows done here a couple of times and the staff who helped me were really nice and professional and gave me great post-wax instructions to make sure I got the best results. read more

I love going to Derby Salon! I've been seeing Shandra for my cut, color, and styles for over 5 years! I've never been disappointed and I always feel like a million bucks when I leave. There's nothing like having complete strangers ask you where you get your hair done. :) I'm always very happy to share Shandra's information with them. The only person who I let touch my eyebrows is Alison Etter, the owner of Derby. I'm just picky like that! She broke her arm earlier this year.... and I legitimately just let my eyebrows grow out for 3 months until she was all healed up. She is the absolute BEST. Alison's facials are also incredible and I always feel fantastic, fresh-faced, and beautiful after! I discovered a great nail service at this salon - they offer "happy hour" and offer great prices on manicures! While it may not be included in the happy hour pricing, the "Gellish" manicures are INCREDIBLE! They last 2+ weeks and the color stays bright and shiny, just like the day they were first painted. What can I say? I'm a Derby Salon loyalist and I love the people who work here. The services are reasonably priced and incredible. read more

Updated review: I love this place. I've been coming for two years now and I'm always pleased the results. Hair cut is always perfect, I'm never pushed to buy products (and sometimes get samples!), and I love all the cute jewelry/hats/bags Derby sells as well. Came in today for a very sudden waxing appointment. I spent my morning at another place getting my legs done... and I left with too little cash in my wallet and poor results. Derby let me get my underarms done and my appointment was $10 cheaper than the other place, quick, and as painless as a wax can be! So glad to see that Derby is doing well and they've expanded their services. Thank you! Old review: Jessie was amazing at fixing my thick, wavy hair and listening to my needs! I'm definitely saying goodbye to all the other salons I've been to and sticking with Derby :) I sent an email requesting an appointment about a week ago, describing my hair and my desires. I was given the names of two ladies that work at Derby, and with my schedule I chose Jessie. I later sent another email requesting to see her, going into further detail about my hair type and regimen (I refuse to use harsh chemicals, never use heat, work outside a lot, never take more than a minute on my hair, etc etc), and some photos of what I wanted. Jessie was able to see me the next day and went straight to work. I was concerned that maybe she'd forget what was in my email, but when I sat in her chair she confirmed what I wrote and put me right at ease! The wash/massage was amazing, and she's such a cheery energetic person that our appointment flew right by! I left with lightweight, soft, shiny hair that I (and my boyfriend) couldn't stop touching. This is a really cool spot to get your hair done. The service is excellent and the salon has great vibe. They put up great art and have a wonderful attitude. This was my first salon I went to when I first moved to Seattle about two years ago. The environment/staff are eclectic, which I LOVE. Something for everyone... And they offer some bubbly while you wait. I went there 3 times to the same hairdresser... We chatted from beginning to end or haircut. I loved chatting with her which is why I kept going back to her. Unfortunately each time I went in I asked for certain things to be done but my haircut always came out alittle on the shorter side. I eventually moved from the area and never went back. BUT I'd deffinately reccomend this salon. I also did their happy hour brow waxing. I went into Derby to get my hair colored and cut. I was very nervous because I hadn't had my hair colored in years! I showed Denise, my stylist, a picture of the color style I wanted and she asked a few questions then she was at work. She spent 4 hours on my hair (I have tons of hair) and I was sooooo happy! She was very nice and caring. She didn't complain about my long, thick hair (some stylist have, believe it or not) and I received so many compliments the next day. Thank you so much. The first time I went to derby salon was for a simple haircut. I have fine, wavy hair that takes two minutes to cut straight across the back, so I could have gone basically anywhere. I liked the vibe and the people I met there, so I decided to go back when I wanted to dye my hair close to my natural medium/medium-light brown color (I had some bleaching from the sun and I just wanted a solid color again). I showed the stylist multiple pictures that captured my natural hair color. When the color service was finished, i was absolutely shocked to see that my hair was in fact JET BLACK. I couldn't see even the tiniest hint of brown, even in the bright sunlight. I went back to the salon the next day after using a clarifying shampoo and their "fix" was bleaching a few strands of hair on the surface, resulting in a terrible brass-orange color amidst a sea of jet black hair. An absolutely awful experience overall, not to mention over $100 for an all-over color that I didn't want! read more

I had a "happy hour" manicure by Megan, and then a pedicure by Xochi and both were very pleasant. The manicure was only $20 with the "happy hour" discount and the pedicure was $47, which was more than I wanted to pay, but I really like the care and time Xochi took with my nails and then amazing foot massage that went with it. And the glass of wine was nice too! It's always a gamble trying to find a new place for cosmetic treatments (you never know what you're going to get, right?) But I really think I lucked out with Derby. The entire staff was very friendly and welcoming, and I really appreciated that I didn't feel rushed. Both ladies gave me great service, and I plan on going back for my next mani/pedi - maybe even a hair cut or massage?! read more

I will follow Crista Tribble wherever she goes to cut my hair, and she has happily landed at Derby. It feels a bit too hip for me (that's my own issue), but everyone is really nice. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it costs a fair amount (after tip), and is usually running behind schedule. Still, she's most definitely worth it. A few months ago I was in desperate need of a trim, but my previous salon was fully booked. I decided to give Derby Salon on Roosevelt a try--mostly because it's near my house. (Plus, all the stylists there have great hair themselves which is always a good sign!) Stumbling upon Derby was such a stroke of luck because now it's my favorite place! I've had very short hair for about a year now, but it's never been quite what I hoped for. It always felt slightly boring or outdated. No matter how many times I explained to stylists that I wanted something young and fresh, no one nailed it... until I met Jordan at Derby. She rocks! I am not exaggerating when I say she gave me the hair I always wanted. She updated the style, added some wispy bangs, and now I feel completely comfortable with the look and I get compliments on it all the time. Jordan is really professional and great at what she does. She listens to what you want, but adds her perspective without pressuring at all. She makes sure the look you want will work with your hair type. Aside from Jordan, the overall salon is great . They are really flexible with walk-ins or last minute bookings. Plus, every time I go there, I am offered coffee, tea, etc. which is a really nice touch. I definitely recommend this place- particularly for short haircuts, if you're new to Seattle or just looking to switch to a new salon. read more

Summer @Derby Salon is best for color and cuts. I trust her input & always get compliments on my hair. Derby Salon looks nice, airy colors, pleasant, lively ambience, the staff is friendly and it is a full service spa. The styling products they use are high end, Bumble and Bumble while the prices are within the market's range, i.e. not over the top. I love the section they have with coffee and water by the waiting area and I believe every other person asked me if I would like coffee, water or if I am good. What a welcoming environment! Summer is my stylist and I love her work... She is accommodating, friendly, and understands what the client is looking for. She provides great advice and aren't afraid to ask another specialist if needed. She did a phenomenal job with my hair. I have long dark hair and it requires some work to achieve blonde shades while keeping it healthy. She is generous with the foils, i.e. highlights enough to reach the desired look, keeps notes/track of the colors used on my hair and is very talented. She is my stylist forever!! read more

Shandra gave me the world's best haircut 2 weeks ago. I have gotten more compliments on this one haircut than I have all of the other haircuts in my life combined. I kid you not!! I have this wavy/sometimes curly/often frizzy/only straight with tons of heat and checmicals kind of hair. The cut is PERFECT for my curls. I made a Yelp account in order to write this review... That important to tell you all about this. First, my hair history: I did extensive research to find a salon that would do funky unnatural colors in Seattle. I came across Vain and was psyched. I ended up with hot HOT pink hair (stylist convinced me not to go light because it'll wash out too quickly), a burnt scalp and a haircut I was forced into. And for a whopping $350. I liked my hair for a while, but I was tired of looking like a stripper and wanted to get rid of the two inches of dark roots. Now my Derby experience: Absolutely five stars. I showed a picture from a catalogue of light pink/rose gold hair. No "I think I can do this..." or "well it'll be hard with your damaged hair..." Rebekah got right to it. Not only did she nail the color, my hair feels happy and healthy (as happy as twice bleached hair can be). She also gave me one of the cutest cuts I've had. No heat during the process either, she was patient with it and checked in on how it was lightening often. The salon is eclectic and fun to be in. Easygoing, but definitely professional. Rebekah was fun and comfortable to chat with, but left me to read my book when I wanted to and didn't force any awkward conversation. Other stylists came over and complimented my hair too. And to top it off my bleach/tone and cut was only $150 before tip. I was shocked I had spent twice that to get worse treatment beforehand. I know I've only been here once, but I was thoroughly impressed and would come back here in a heartbeat. I definitely recommend Derby. read more

They are really good at trasformative hair colors (which I love), as well as cuts and facials. I have been going to Derby for years now and it's worth it. They sell Bb products (among others) which are consistently great and affordable. I highly recommend this place, even if you have to make a drive to get there. Remember the scene from 40-year-old Virgin where he's mutilated in the waxing salon? Derby is sort of like that, except the staff, who walks around dazed and full of themselves, aren't as gentle. I walked in for their "Happy Hour brows" and left with missing a chunk of skin under my eyebrow. The waxer stared at me, asked me if I had a scar above my eye, and when I said no, she said, "Oops." They charged me anyway. I should have put up more of a fuss. Against my better judgement, I returned. The stylist spilled wax on my favorite sweater, then dabbed oil to try and remove the wax. The other stylists laughed all the way through it. I hope their tattoos become tainted with stretch marks as they age, so no one will be able to discern that the inky mass on their forearm was once a flaming pair of dice. read more

I really only go to Derby Salon for Happy Hour Brows ($14). Heather does an AWESOME job and I've never left disappointed. I did go there for a haircut when I first moved to town and needed a hairstylist, and I wasn't impressed, so I haven't gone back to them for a cut. Maybe I just got someone that didn't really understand how to cut really curly hair, but I couldn't keep taking my chances. However, brow waxing there is great, and I love the way my face smells (is that weird?) after I leave. Plus, Happy Hour Brows!! I mean, how cool is that?! Its hard to find decent brow waxing that isn't in a little nail salon where you take a huge gamble with how the shape will come out and doesn't cost $40. read more

*Update- It has now been 10 months since this disaster of a cut, my hair is short, I've lost over 8 inches and I'm STILL dealing with this mess. The razor went over every inch of my hair from the roots down, destroying it. It's been such a nightmare and I have at least a year more to go to get this grown out. Anyone who knows about hair would NOT give this kind of haircut...it destroys your hair so WHY ON EARTH WOULD SHE HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!!! Please, please, please...DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON and avoid CRISTA at ALL COST!!! I wouldn't wish what I've been through on ANYONE!!! Crista butchered my hair at this salon last summer by running a razor down the back of my hair without even asking me what I wanted. It's so sad, even months later my hair looks terrible. When I recently HAD to have 3+ inches cut off because of this cut I asked the stylist WHY would someone do this. They said it was a misunderstanding...WHAT! I'm hoping this review won't dissapear like my last one did. This cut has caused me severe torment, it's THAT bad. It defeats the whole purpose of Yelp to not show negative comments, I guess that's what you get as a business sponsor. I go to Derby for facials. I'm not a bigger planner when it comes to them. I'll wake up and literally say "must have facial now", so obviously a big part of my deal is finding a place that can easily accommodate a last minute appointment. I've always been really lucky with Derby, and the facials I have received from both Patti and Stephanie have been great. They're both extremely capable, friendly, and knowledgeable. One of my biggest pet peeves is when an aesthetician tries to sell you product during and or right after a facial...I know, I know, that's kind of their job, but I'm there to relax too and I'm already paying up the wazoo for a service. The Derby ladies are great at educating their clients about the products without pushing them, which I really appreciate. In addition, and this is the other pet peeve I have about facials- they don't leave the room during a facial. Even when you're just lying there waiting for the steam to work magic, they are giving you some kind of treatment so you always feel attended to. So, I only gave Derby a 4- what gives? Well, I'm unfortunately going to have to chime in with some of the other yelpers here. The reception desk is inconsistent. Sometimes I've had prompt, friendly service, other times I've had to wait up to 15 minutes over my scheduled appt. time without any explanation as to why things were running late. I appreciate the mellow vibe, but y'all got to let customers know when a service is not going to happen on time, and a simple, sincere apology for the inconvenience goes a long way. The other reason that I gave a 4 is because I did not get a great facial the last time I went in. I saw someone I'd never seen before, and while she was super nice, she told me that I did not need any extractions, and therefore did not perform any. While that was flattering, I know my skin. I didn't argue, cuz it seemed awkward at the time, but when I got home and looked in the mirror- sure enough, the same blackheads that I knew were there to begin with had not magically disappeared. That was disappointing, and I would not go back to her again. But, I heartily recommend Stephanie and Patti, and would return for their services in a heartbeat. read more

I had the worst experience at Derby and I was disappointed because I'd heard such great things. It was ranked in Allure Magazine after all! But, I think it must really depend on the stylist you see there. The stylist I saw, Chavaughn, didn't listen to what I said I wanted. I told her that I wanted long layers, she made them too short and uneven. It looks like I have a mullet on the right side of my head (not exaggerating.) After careful thought, I decided to give Derby Salon two stars instead of one. I used to go to Derby regularly, and I saw a couple of different stylists who were awesome. They never gave me a bad cut, and I turned myself over to their judgement willingly because they always made me look great when I walked out the door. It was heaven. Then, I quit going to Derby for a couple of years. In the meantime, I became a stay-at-home mom. My family is fortunate to be able to live off of my husband's salary so I can stay home with my little love, but unfortunately that salary isn't huge and we think of things like $56 haircuts as a luxury, not an every day purchase. I had gone for several months without a haircut and things were getting very dire. After some thought, I decided to book an appointment at Derby since they had always been so great in the past. Both of the ladies I used to see no longer work there, so I explained to the receptionist that I was looking for someone who could help with my wavy/frizz/fine hair. She set me up with a girl I was assured was a "fine hair specialist." I was very excited, and when the time came I met a very sweet girl who seemed to understand what I was saying and was excited to help with my hair. So she cut it. It was a disaster in every sense of the word. I had told her that I wanted something very low maintenance since most days I'm lucky to wash it, let alone style it. What I got was an angled bob. The back was very strangely stacked, unblended layers, and then my hair angled down to the front, where there was no cutting done. I had one friend remark that it looked more like I needed a haircut after the haircut than it had before. Before I had left the salon they had explained that if I was unhappy for any reason, I could come back within two weeks for a redo. I called, explained that I was unhappy and that I would rather have someone else cut my hair that might have more of the same style that I have. They booked me with another stylist that they assured me was one of their best. And I got my hair cut again. Granted, it is a better cut now. But, there are a couple of sections that are about 2 inches longer than the rest of my hair that weren't cut in the redo, and the layers are still very strange and choppy. At this point, I was scared to have anyone else cut my hair since I had lost about 4 inches from the length and hadn't dreamed of having short hair. I called again and spoke with the owner of the salon, who assured me that was not the way they like to do business. She suggested I return to the salon and let someone fix my hair. When I told her I was uncomfortable doing that, she asked to verify my address and said, "I'm going to send you something." Nothing ever arrived. I'm sure it would have been a credit at the salon for a free service, but at this moment it feels like they completely forgot about me and my bad experience. Basically, I paid $56 (plus the tip I left for both girls) for a ridiculous haircut I could have gotten at someplace else and paid way less for. I would actually have rated this as a one star experience had it not been for the past experiences I've had here. Long story short, I would rather spend my money at a salon where they care about the end result haircut and the experience of their clients. read more

I had mediocre experience at Derby. I bought an eyebrow wax and nail shelac to Derby at an auction. When I walked in, I was not greeted, and then when the girl behind the desk finally spoke to me she was pretty nonchalant and almost rude. My eyebrow wax lady was sweet and friendly ad she did a great job, and my nail shelac was done by a charming nice man. However, the shelac (which is supposed to last up to two weeks) began peeling off the NEXT DAY. I suspect it is because he kept taking my hands out of the UV light before the timer had counted down. I'm not sure if my experience was because I bought it at an auction and no money went to Derby, but I would think that they want return customers and that would have been the point of putting it in an auction in the first place. I paid first off and gave generous tips, which I would not have done if I knew my shelac would begin coming off within 24 hours. read more

I had a great haircut and color here with Chivahn. I messed up my hair dye pretty badly, so since I needed a good cut anyway I came in for a cut and color consult. She did a great job of working with my hair and finding a cut that would work for me - she even styled it two ways so I could see both! At $35 for a cut it was the best bargain ever! She fit me in later that day for a color and did an amazing job, my color came out vibrant and with no trace of my previous mistakes. A great haircut and color does wonders for my self esteem.
