My mom and I went to Densetsu for dinner last night, and I have to say that I think it might be my favorite sushi place in the Dallas metroplex. When you walk in to Densetsu, the entire staff shouts out a greeting. It's a very friendly, quaint little restaurant in the middle of a strip mall. Definitely not a place you would look at and say "I know great sushi lives here," but trust me... it's great. My mom and I ordered way too much food--had to try a few things to make sure we had a solid opinion of the place (only logical). The Sunset roll and the Cherry Blossom roll were my favorites, but everything was fresh, beautiful, and delicious. And Gina, the owner, came over after our meal and thanked us for coming in. She was very personable and thankful for our positive feedback. Love that customer service. I visited for lunch last month and had a good experience... it wasn't crowded at around 1pm. The sushi chef was a nice guy and talked a lil to me. I had a sashimi combination and enjoyed it... Hands down my favorite place to get sushi. My favorite is the Red Mountain roll which is phenomenal. Portions are huge, it takes me multiple bites to finish one piece of sushi! We are recent transplants from Austin and love Midori sushi restaurant there. We were sad to leave it as they have the best sushi. Then we moved to Allen and learn that Densetsu is the sister restaurant to Midori's! How great is that, to find out we can still get our favorites?! You have to try the Tuna Tower, The Salmon Tower and the Superman Burrito to try first and then get sushi rolls from there ... They are all so delicious! And their serving sizes are huge, you will definitely have leftovers for lunch the next day! So if you're looking for a great sushi restaurant, head to Densetsu, you won't be disappointed! read more

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner last night. When you walk in, the entire staff greets you in Japanese, which reminded me of Ippudo in NY. Nice touch. It's a cute restaurant, not very big, with very courteous and helpful service. We both prefer sashimi but given that it was our first time here, we decided to order a variety of things. We started with the gyoza and then had albacore sashimi, a basic shrimp roll and the Lone Star roll, which is one of the tempura choices. The gyoza was light and delicious. The sauce they served it with was too salty though, which was a bummer. The albacore sashimi was incredible...it literally melted in your mouth. It came on a plate with the sauce already on it and lightly fried onion strips. I could have easily eaten another serving of it. The quality of the fish is top notch. Next was the basic shrimp roll which had avocado and cucumber. It was very fresh tasting and they used only a little bit of rice so the focus was really on the main ingredients. Then came the Lone Star roll. Every once in a while, I like to have a fried roll...it's like comfort food to me. If I remember correctly, it had lobster, shrimp and cream cheese. It was so delicious! And what was really impressive was how lightly fried it was, not greasy at all. At this point, my boyfriend and I were very full but the waiter brought out a sample of the Firecracker roll, also one of the tempura selections. It is supposed to be spicy but I found that while it had a nice warmth, it was not very spicy at all. It had salmon, cream cheese and another ingredient (tuna?) and was pretty tasty. They have a large menu and if you are with someone who doesn't eat sushi, there are plenty of items to choose from. I am looking forward to trying their Miso ramen on a future visit! This place was amazing and by far the best place to eat teriyaki anything. I'm a huge fan of chicken teriyaki and this place was delicious. Chicken teriyaki plate came with huge 3 pieces. The plate was nicely set, a masterpiece really. The vegetable tempura was really good as well. The customer service was amazing as well. I am totally for real when I say this: Densetsu is amaze-balls. Not just that. Densetsu is THE amaze-balls. Hands down my favorite Japanese/sushi place in existence. I could blather on and on about how awesome this restaurant is and why I would marry it if Densetsu were a person, but none of you are reading this for that. So here's me cutting to the chase and straight up telling you why you need to go here and eat all the foods: 1.) High quality food, and large portions of it for the price. 2.) Amazing sushi standards you see everywhere and a ton of signature dishes you don't. 3.) 5 star service with amazing efficiency and consistency. 4.) Great atmosphere, with a trendy vibe. 5.) It's frickin' delicious. So to elaborate: You can spend five bucks on a Cali roll anywhere, and every sushi place in town has "signature rolls" that will cost you anywhere from ten to twenty bucks a pop. So why is Densetsu so special? Well for one, their menu is expansive. Even if sushi isn't your thing, they've got a startling selection of standard Japanese dishes like Bento, Udon, Miso, etc etc. But the amount of sushi options you have for a place of this size is impressive. Baked rolls, tempura rolls, "fresh" rolls, big rolls, small rolls - you name it, they've got it. And Densetsu's signature rolls are some of the best I have ever encountered in this world. Not only is the seafood they use always fresh and high quality (I literally drool over how exquisite the marbling in their salmon is), but these rolls are HUGE. We're talking good-luck-getting-one-piece-in-your-mouth-whole HUGE. Many might scoff at dropping fifteen buck on one sushi roll, but here that will fill you up quick. The staff is always efficient and attentive, even when they are super busy. They always remember me and all my co-workers who've I've gotten addicted to this place, even if we only come in once every couple of weeks. Their recommendations are always sound, and you can't go wrong with the kind of greeting and fare well you get at this place. If you decide to take me and the hundreds of other reviewers of this restaurant at our word, here are some of my favorite dishes to try upon going to Densetsu: 1.) Sushi Lunch Combination - a great way to sample the standard sushi and test Densetsu's quality. For twelve bucks you'll get soup and salad, five large nigiri pieces, and one of three rolls of your choice. Delish! 2.) Superman Burrito - THIS IS MY FAVORITE OF FAVORITES. I will be shocked if anyone says they don't like this. 3.) Krispy Roll - so much tuna and salmon goodness inside you won't feel bad about the tempura outside. 4.) Lone Star Roll - Tempura-fried orgasm, with cream cheese. 5.) Golden California Roll - you will literally never look at california rolls the same again. 6.) Ribeye Teriyaki - delicious and economical in it's Bento lunch form. 7.) Popcorn Lobster Roll - like calamari, but lobster with sushi roll at the bottom. Even though I have my particular favorites, I have yet to try something at Densetsu that I don't like or at least enjoy on some level. DO YOU KNOW HOW RARE THAT IS? How many restaurants can you say that about? If there was a six-star rating, I would give it to this place. DOWNSIDES: Yes, there are downsides. Densetsu is too popular for it's own good. This quaint little place is PACKED on the weekends. Like, if you didn't get a reservation a week before, you'll have a two hour wait unless you show up at 10:00pm kind of popular. I've even heard of to-go orders taking at least 45 minutes on a Friday night. Beware of weekend sushi cravings (and maybe try to schedule them on a Tuesday). Other than that, I really can't find a fault so far with Densetsu, save how much money it likes to take out of my paycheck. It is a staple of my dine-out experiences, and I will continue to recommend this place to EVERYONE, because it's so good I'll convert anyone, whether they like sushi or not. read more

It took me nearly 4 months to eat sushi in Plano, and I'm SO glad Densetsu was my first! When the other reviewers mention that the ENTIRE staff "greets" you in Japanese, they fail to mention that the entire staff YELLS at you in Japanese. I walked in, had 5 people YELL at me, and I froze; i wasn't sure why everyone was yelling at me. Seeing as how the server sat us, I assumed I didn't do anything bad. A few minutes later, the door opens, yelling ensues, I freeze again. This happened repeatedly during our meal: someone would come in, staff would yell. Someone would go out, staff would yell. It finally stopped startling me, but it really was obnoxious. I will go again because the sushi was so delicious, but if it's a bunch of yelling again, I'll be stuck with only takeout. The seafood sunomono salad was fabulous. Lots of fish, delicious marinated cucumbers. I'd have loved to drink the ponzu (but I have manners). The edamame was plump and tasty without being too salty. My mom had several salmon nigiri rolls, while we shared a Philadelphia, maybe? (She's not huge into raw fish.) We also had something that was fried, and while it was absolutely tasty, I maintain that fried rolls aren't my fave. There was a rather tall, youngish (who can tell age with Asians? Most of 'em age so well!) sushi chef who was just about as tasty looking as the fish ;) I recommend him for eye candy. (And his sushi skills. It really was fabulous sushi.) I've found "my sushi place," assuming the yelling is toned down a bit next time I go. My poor heart can't handle that kind of shock! ****I went back to Densetsu this evening, and I don't regret that decision. My interpretation of "yelling" was much calmer this evening (though maybe it's because I was prepared for it?) The staff is very attentive, removing dishes moments after you give the "Oh man! That was tasty!" signal. We sat at the bar and were able to chat with the owner and the sushi chef. Both are very, very nice, providing pleasant chit chat. If you want a meal in a bowl, I highly recommend the Jay's Favorite Roll. it's a huge mix of "stuff," but goes down quite nicely. read more

Their sushi rolls are enormous! I ordered their spider roll and had trouble trying to eat it (I mean, you're supposed to eat sushi in one bite, right?). It was delicious and the presentation was pretty impressive. The large pieces of sushi were laid out on a banana leaf and topped with shredded veggies. You won't find many sushi restaurants in Dallas that serve sushi this way so I encourage you to check it out. The restaurant gets really packed and there's limited seating - make sure to eat there for lunch or less-busy hours. Service was great. Owned by a sushi chef from Los Angeles, Densetsu is a great little restaurant with a lot flavor. The service of the wait staff and the chefs are excellent. This place actually beat out my former favorite sushi place in the Dallas area, which was Sushi Sake. Densetsu is now my favorite! My girlfriend and I are regulars here and we absolutely love it! We always sit at the bar and get to know the sushi chefs. It's great to see them making the sushi and chatting with them. All of their rolls are very good, and the presentation on everything is exquisite. The fish is very fresh and good quality, and the chefs are diligent and work hard. Our favorite rolls are the spicy yellow tail hand roll, the Angry John Roll, and the Volcano Roll. It can get really busy there on Friday and Saturday nights after about 6:30 PM, so get there early if you can! The customer service here is also excellent. I accidentally ordered hand rolls when I wanted cut rolls, and they had already given me the hand roll. They said I could keep the hand roll and made us a cut roll and gave it to us at no extra charge. If I could give this a 10 out of 5, I would. But 5 is as high as it goes. Fantastic "American" sushi for Dallas. Very fresh and Texas sized portions. Some may not like the lack of authenticity but it's fresh raw fish, good tasting rice, and interesting vegetable and sauce combinations. I can dig it. It's packed at lunch so get there early. My first trip here, my friendly waiter wanted to talk fantasy football. I, nor does anyone else, care about your stupid fantasy football dilemmas. I gots my own fantasy tragedies. I tried to order two rolls and some side sushi. He suggested I pull in the reigns a bit and try one roll, then, if I'm still hungry, I could get another one. He said their rolls tend to be on the large side. He was right. The rolls are generous and delicious and not a bad value and fun. How can sushi be fun? I don't know, but it's fucking fun. So there. The atmosphere is great, small, but great. Oh, be sure to make a reservation if you're going on a Friday or Saturday. And get the candy cane roll. And the albacore tuna sushi. And a bunch of other stuff. I've also tried the ramon miso. Yummy also. The girl who accompanies me and comes over sometimes to hang out says they are some of the best noodles she's ever had. And she's had a lot of noodles. She lived in Thailand for 7 years, or something like that. Everyone knows Thailand is the capitol of noodles, so that's saying a lot. Have tried over and over to make this place my favorite again like it used to be but I keep getting disappointment with the service. Was in there for over 49 minutes and waiting to order and not only did they forget us, they closed the kitchen before we got our entree leaving us all hangry. Eventually, they did apologize but only after my partner complained and tried to calmly explain why we were so upset. I came here a few months ago with my friend after she raved about this place. Actually Densetsu had been on my list for a long time, I just was never able to make it up here until then. Densetsu is located near the busy intersection of Spring Creek Parkway and Coit. It's in a shopping center on the southwest corner next to an automotive place. It was kinda difficult to find the first time because there were so many places at that intersection but if you're driving east on Spring Creek, you'll see it on your right before you get to Coit. It's a somewhat small place with modern decor and flat panel TVs everywhere. They have a full wait staff as well as 4 sushi chefs all working at peak hours which I think for them is a necessity because they've been bustling with patrons during every visit. I've tried so many different rolls on their menu. My favorite by far is the superman burrito--a large "burrito" made of salmon, tuna, and avocado wrapped in rice and a rice paper sheet. It's served with 2 special sauces: a sweet spicy mayo and a very spicy ponzu sauce. Other rolls I've had were the angry john, baked salmon, ahi tower (yummy!), cherry blossom roll. lion king roll (i think that's what it was called), oh yes and the baked scallop roll. Everything has been really wonderful. I will say I was really surprised by the baked scallop roll. I think it was a california roll that was topped with a baked scallop sauce that had onions and mushrooms in it. One thing to keep in mind though that the portions of the rolls are Texas-sized. My first time coming here, we over ordered for 2 and had quite a bit to take home. Most rolls have about 8 generous sized pieces of sushi. You also get the option of ordering hand rolls instead of a standard roll. It's evident though that this place is doing really well. Each time I've been here, the restaurant has always been about 80% full. I've read some reviews that have knocked this place because it wasn't "authentic." But that doesn't mean the food isn't palatable. If you want some really fresh fish, creative rolls with artistic presentation, and friendly and quick service, Densetsu would be a great place to try. read more

I'm a server, so when I go out to restaurants or any place to eat i am always really understanding of how things may take a while, little mess ups, etc. The place is always super busy so I understand that it takes a while for things, I really do. But Jesus I waited 17 minutes to get my check! And on top of that we never really got our order taken and we were so hungry my friend had to get up after 10 minutes or so of waiting just to give the lady who got us waters and sat us the paper. And then after we did that we got greeted by our server who obviously didn't know what was going on at all. We already had waters and we're being taken care of because he was so slow. So, SLOW ass service. BEST sushi in Plano, however. Love how big the rolls are and how beautiful, great environment, and always order the chefs choice with whatever you get! Imagine my surprise that a place less than a mile from my house is one of the top rated places on Yelp. The wife and I tried this one evening after work. Good: food. Ordered the Superman, Dragon, and two other things. Food - great! Portion sizes are awesome. We could have done with 3 entrees vs 4 and been just fine - we were stuffed leaving. Price really wasn't as bad as we were thinking, especially considering we ordered drinks as well. Bad: service. The guy we had came to our table three times, we had to flag down other guys who were walking by for other things. Tight quarters like others mentioned. They brought out the wrong sushi at one point - they made two of the same and took one back. All in all - we'll be back. read more

I came here a second time and had the Volcano Roll and the Dynamite Roll, and unfortunately they were not good at all.

Still love coming to this place for fresh and large portions of sushi, but service over the past few years has really gone downhill. I don't know if they even have a host anymore because I have found myself standing at the entrance for 10-15 minutes without a single server acknowledging us. I've had to get the attention of servers myself before they even put me on a list or seat us. However, once/if you get past this (it does bother me just because service used to be much better), you can't really beat their large servings of sushi given the price and freshness of the fish. A lot of the rolls have the same/very similar ingredients. A go-to favorite for me is the ahi tuna tower (unlike any other you've ever seen when it comes to its size... it's huge) and the superman burrito (if you don't want heavy sauces and just fresh pieces of sashimi wrapped inside rice). Basically, you can't really go wrong with any of their speciality/baked rolls. Their presentation always looks good as well. I will continue to come back to this place, just with slightly lowered expectations. read more
