Visited with some friends for lunch and wasn't super impressed to be honest, as someone who eats at this type of restaurant often and has been to Japan. I got the Bulgogi bento, and all of it was just okay. The edamame was actively kind of flavorless, the bulgogi was sweeter than I would prefer with way more veggies than actual meat, and everything was just kind of alright rather than standout. Bf generally liked his sushi but said he'd gotten better elsewhere. The reason I bump this to 4 star instead of 3 is due to the waitress bringing out two additional dishes for free to our group. These two were generally popular among the group, though I personally didn't like them. I don't think it was gross or anything, but I felt it was average for what I'm used to. read more

It's a small cafe-type restaurant. We went on Saturday at noon and there were 2 sushi chefs, 2 people in the kitchen and 1 server. They were really running a bare bones operation, but the food and the service for us was better than anticipated. This place is one of the closer places to the Plano Event Center so we went for lunch while attending an event at the Center. We got in just in time because a few minutes later, they were pretty slammed, but I have to hand it to the server. She hosted, she took orders, she served, and she bussed tables. She even remembered the order in which people came in so she can seat them based on the order they came in. This was so impressive to me. The food was solid. Typical Japanese food. My husband ordered the salmon teriyaki bento box lunch special and my mom ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box lunch special. They both came with rice, an egg roll, edamame, a California roll, soup and salad. It was a good amount of food for the price. I had the chirashi bowl, which comes with soup. The fish they served was salmon, shrimp, tuna, and I think it was red snapper. I also got a bit of tamago. It was the perfect amount for lunch. I didn't go back to the event falling asleep. I think the server/hostess/busser needs 1 more person to help bus tables at least, even though she's a superwoman, but it doesn't hurt to have help. read more

Very consistent! We always get the French kisses, umi fire roll, las Vegas and ex girlfriend. I ate in there once and it was a nice ambiance perfect for a date night. My favorite when ordering with them whether its take out or dine in, they always surprise you with sample rolls to try all the time!!! That is what truly makes a place for me, if your going out of your way to showcase some other good rolls that weren't ordered that I must try, that means you really stand by the quality of your food!!! The pricing of everything was fair and the amount of food was very fair with each dish we ordered. I give their food a three star because both my partner and I ended up getting sick after the fact so not sure what happened. Service was okay. We had a wonderful dinner at Umi Umi! My son requested the Salmon Tower for his birthday, and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The salmon tower (you can choose ahi/tuna as well) was absolutely impressive and hands down the best we've had in town (and yes we have had MANY since it is my husband and son's favorite). The portion was generous, and every bite was delicious. We also loved the Volcano Sushi, which came with a fiery presentation that wowed the kids. The sushi chef was so kind to give us a few complimentary items. The cucumber roll, light and refreshing, was a big hit with the whole family, even the kids! If I had to note anything, the ambiance could be improved. The space feels a bit more like a casual café, and the K-Pop music videos with slightly sensual dances on the TV weren't my favorite choice for a family dinner, though my kids thankfully didn't pay much attention. Umi Umi is kind of a hidden gem. It's a sushi and Japanese restaurant tucked away in a part of town where you'd least expect to find one. It's surrounded by fast food chains, but it itself isn't. The interior is small, dimly lit, cozy, and has a leafy décor. I came on a Friday with a friend around 2 p.m. for a very late lunch. It was pretty empty as they were about to take a midday break at 3 p.m., though it did fill up quite a bit around 2:30 p.m. The menu has a wide variety of sushi, rolls, bento, noodles, and dons. They also have some dishes that make it seem Asian-fusion-y. We ordered a karage to start - it's a dish that's easy to make but hard to do well. I usually use it to measure how my experience at a Japanese restaurant will go. We also ordered a carbonara udon and a tonkatsu don. The karage was pretty good - it was hot, the exterior was crunchy, and the meat inside was tender. It came with tartar sauce and tempura sauce on the side. The carbonara udon was alright. I really wanted to like it because it looked great and was very creamy and flavorful, but it was just too salty. The tonkatsu don was really good - the tonkatsu was crunchy and tender, and the rice was done right. Our entrees each came with a complimentary bowl of miso soup. Much to our surprise, each of us also received a small slice of Castle Rock on the house when getting our check. It tasted absolutely delightful - the sweetness and spiciness were perfect. We randomly found this hidden gem while searching for a new sushi spot in the Plano East area. We've been here a couple of times, and we're always impressed with the quality of the sushi. They offer surprisingly large and unique sushi options. So far, from all the sushi rolls we've tried, my favorite has to be the Love Roll. The Love Roll features deep-fried scallops and avocado, topped with fresh scallops, eel, spicy mayo, creamy wasabi, and sriracha. This roll melts in your mouth with the freshest, creamiest flavor. I also enjoyed the Heart Attack Roll, which has a nice kick from the jalapeño. The restaurant is cozy, with quite a few tables. We came in on a Thursday night for dinner and had a great dining experience. They have an extensive roll/sushi menu and I would expect them all to be delicious. We devoured the Lion King Roll and a cucumber salad...both were fresh and tasty!! We ordered the Japanese curry and the udon carbonara and enjoyed the flavors of both. We felt we needed a little more spice, so our server brought us some hot sauce. We were also served a complementary fried rice app that was excellent! Came here for lunch! It's a nice little restaurant that wasn't too busy but still had a number of customers on a weekday for lunch. They have a nice lunch menu to choose from, there are a couple ways you can order sushi. I got the basic+special roll combo and that was $16 which was not bad, the basic rolls were still pretty big as you can see (ordered eel). The Superman burrito was something different for me, thought it was ok. A lot of imitation crab and not much fish in it. My friend got the sushi bento, which is the same price and the main difference is you get half rolls but also receive a California roll, edemame and egg rolls. I will say, both of us thought the fish tasted a tad fishy. Both our meals came with soup and salad! I really like the salad dressing they chose. They also gave us this little plate of something on the house.. not sure what it was but it was crunchy on the outside. There were 2 pieces! I've driven by this place so many times for the last two years and I am so upset with myself because it is fantastic. The rainbow roll was phenomenal. The Cali roll was delicious. My wife was in love with the big mama and the smelt roe the Gyoza was to die for. And I'm just gonna say the star of the show for me was the green hulk roll . I will 100% be coming back for multiple reasons. The service was phenomenal. Recommendations were great. I'm so happy we finally stopped in. We will 100% be back and a 100% recommend this to anyone. I've tried UmiUmi twice now, once in person and once delivered, and both times it was a very solid sushi choice in the area! The staff are super kind and also give out complimentary samples of some of their other rolls both in-house and for takeout, which I think is a really nice touch. My favorites so far have been the seared tuna nigiri (excellent char and the pepper lends a great kick), the ikura nigiri (super great flavor), and the black pearl roll (love the white tuna topping!). I like that they don't use too much sauce on their rolls that it's overwhelming, but the flavors meld together really well. Fish is pretty fresh, and the sushi rice isn't bad. This place is DELICIOUS. The castle rock is my favorite roll, I get it a couple times a month at least. The quality is so consistent, and they are always throwing in little extras like a couple bites of a different roll on the house...or this beautiful flower made out of a carrot. I always get it to-go or delivery, so I can't speak to the service in-house. But the food itself is so freaking good! Idk if they are related to Umi Sushi in Garland, but it seems they have the same menu. Even tho the Castle Rock is available at both places, I actually greatly prefer the way they cook the bed of crispy rice for the Castle Rock here at UmiUmi, it's nice and crunchy as it should be. I would give this place a 3.5 so I'll round up to a four. I got the roll over roll and even though they did have good chucks of fish inside the roll, the roll itself was HUGE. I personally do not like big rolls; I feel like rolls and sushi should be a one bite thing but this was so big. There was a lot of imitation crab but the flavor there was really nice! They also gave us three things on the house which was incredibly nice. They have us a seared salmon, a cucumber thingy and a crispy rice. The salmon was very delicious BUT soo much sauce that masked the flavor which was disappointing. The cucumber was just okay, not my favorite. The crispy rice dish was interesting but again wayy too much sauce for my liking. Service was pretty fast and they are nice! This location was formally DonDon Poke ... loved and respected by hundreds of people like us. So many of us were curious to learn why they closed and what was opening in its place. We were one of Umi Umis first customers the minute they opened the doors!! Umi Umi has most definitely replaced DonDon Poke. Same address, but new owners, and definitely a different menu. The majority of people coming in were asking over and over if this was still DonDon. No they are not. They are nothing like Don Don, and you are about to be very disappointed. They do offer inside dining. Its a tiny space. When you step in the door, you order by kiosk, credit card only, take a seat and they will bring your food to you. Take out and delivery is offered through Door Dash. You cannot contact them by phone and they do not have a website. If you loved your custom, giant, yummy Don Don Poke Bowls and giant rolls .. well that ship has sailed!! Umi Umi does offer a $13.00 standard (not custom made) poke bowl: tuna, salmon, veggie, teriyaki chicken or shrimp. If you want extra fish, crabmeat, avacado, etc its an additional $2. - $3. each. This was too pricey for us! The poke bowls we saw coming out were .. okay. We tried the Umi Special Roll, 4 pieces, tuna. When it came to our table it's wasn't a roll at all .. it was in a tin pan in layers?!? When they sat the pan down, we commented: "This isnt what we ordered. We ordered a roll." .. the lady said this is the way it is made. We were utterly flabbergasted that it wasnt a roll. We were so confused, how do you respond to that? This was our lunch so we ate it. Yes it was fresh but not what we expected, not a roll, small amount of fish and it did not have 3 masago as described on the menu -- only one. We certainly were not offered any "complimentary food" like the FTR claims. That certainly would have made up for the weirdness, give us a chance to sample their menu, especially during their grand opening, but they didn't even try. Two stars for opening a new local spot but not worth going out of your way. Umi Umi is not putting in the work to earn their own reputation. They are piggy back riding on DonDons reputation by taking over & claiming DonDons five star reviews on Yelp (which was recently removed) and Google (which is still there). Unethical and confusing to new visitors in my opinion. We wish them well in this new endeavor! Maybe they will make improvements along the way and earn their own reputation. read more

ORDER - Volcano Roll - Kanzi Calamari - Chop Chop - Green Bomb - Temptation On the House: Castle Rock and Cool Hawaiian No Rice (view earlier reviews) The Volcano Roll came out with fire around it which was a cool addition. It also stayed warm for about 15-20 minutes afterward which is perfect for a baked roll. All the seafood from the crawfish and crab was quality and tasted good baked. The Kanzi Calamari was served with sweet chili sauce (and tartar sauce I think? - don't quote me on that). It was crispy and the calamari was a bit more on the chewy side. Personally, not one of the best places to go for calamari (pretty mid) but tasted fine. The Chop Chop is a deep-fried roll with spicy crabmeat on top and spicy salmon inside. The salmon is fresh and this roll does give a good kick to it. The spiciness enhances the flavor of the roll and with the crab meat on top, it culminates into a good roll. The Green Bomb is baked spicy salmon with rice, masago, green onions, and avocado. The avocados are fresh with no browning seen. It's also served on a plate in a dome shape which is pretty cool. The avocado meshed well with the rice and crab. A little bit on the sweeter side of flavor but pretty decent. The Temptation Roll is shrimp tempura with crab meat and cream cheese. What I like about this roll is that the cream cheese isn't overpowering. It adds more flavor to the roll and goes well with the tempura. The decorations are so pretty on the plate! Overall, this place always has quality ingredients in the sushi. It is phenomenal in terms of service and food. Also very affordable and tastes amazing! Would highly recommend it to any sushi lover! For Asian food, I am usually more critical and this place wow'd me in every bites. My sister and I debated between agedashi tofu and karage (chicken nuggets) and we were glad that we pick this after asking Austin (the host) for his recommendation. The batter was crispy and the tofu was so soft and silky. The sauce was a little bit more on the sweet side. Overall, I'd order this again and again. The scallop butterfly was delish. Crispy rice and fresh scallops in a bed of vegetables with stir fried dark sauce. I believe it was close to okonomi sauce - sweet and tangy. The crispy rice has enough crunch but also soft when bit into, together with flavorful sauce was heaven match. Carbonara udon was so creamy. The smoky bacon and shrimp provides nice texture while the udon was so soft and tender. I really really like this dish. The service was so attentive and pleasant.
