It seemed that everything has been sitting out all day. The beans and squash casserole were extremely dry. The only satisfying portion was the okra. A quick lunch here this week was typical of our previous visits for a sit down meal, nothing bad, but nothing especially outstanding either. The food is always just a half step away from very good, the service always seems like they envision being somewhere else, like right now - "Sorry, did you want something, now, from me?" We're in the area quite often, so we keep dropping in, mostly for their pimento cheese and home made crackers, but once in awhile for a sit down meal. We were in the area, Alice wanted Chicken Salad, they have Chicken Salad, we had a match! Alice ordered a Chicken Salad Sandwich with a Pasta Salad side, and I chose Beef Tips on Rice with a side of Corn & Lima Beans. We were early, the time out of the kitchen was good. The Chicken Salad was very much influenced by the amount of pickle, and there was an abundance. In fact, it reminded me of the Chicken Salad the old Made Rite Sandwich Company produced, back in the day. While not totally bad, not a re-order item either. Pasta Salad on the sweet side. Beef Tips were tender, but the overall flavor was a bit muted, the dish basically a bit under seasoned - ate it all, but there was no WOW in the dish. Great food! Definitely going back again. And the butter milk pie was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and nice. They even have homemade chow chow it was like my mom uses to make. And the collards too. Seasoned to protection. Then they even has Moss breading to sell. It was awesome. If your in this part of town stop by u will not be disappointed. 6/30 Yall I got a new addition. The carrot cake so one of the best I have ever had. And carrot cake is my favorite. We eat at Delancy's frequently and normally the food is good. Tonight they disappointed us with our takeout order. For starters, when we got the food home, we were missing a side. The order taker read the order back so we know it was on the order. Next, we found that the order of hot chips was a gluey mess of chewy, greasy, thin potato slices. This isn't typical, because I order these often and they are normally crispy and good. See the photos of what we found in the box. Finally, the fried okra in my order was soaking in about a quarter inch of cooking oil in the bottom of the compartment. My wife called to complain and the manager offered to comp our next meal. We have eaten at Delancy's many times. From amazing Southern country cooking to delicious soups, salads and sandwiches, everything is delicious. YES they have sweeeeeet tea and the best homemade desserts you will find in North Carolina. Today is Tuesday so I had the fried chicken livers. There are not too many places that serve these, and do it well. Delancy's has the best chicken livers you will find. They were very crispy and not heavy with batter and grease. My husband had the beef tips over rice - he loved it. You get a large selection of veggie sides - and specials all week long. Today we had sweet potato casserole - just like you make at Thanksgiving! We also got and shared green beans and beets... my favs. You like salmon cakes but don't like the way your kitchen smells afterwards? Go to Delancys for them - they make them like I do. Their meatloaf and chicken pot pie are served every day, I think. Let's just say, these dishes are the real deal. We had guests today, so we ordered the basket of homemade crackers and their homemade chicken salad and pimiento cheese. I could sit there all day and just eat that! We were so impressed, we hired them to cater a large birthday / school event for 300 people. The catering was so easy to order with Michael and on the day, there was NO stress. Brien gave us constant attention and the food of course was wonderful. If you want authentic Southern style food and hospitality, drive to Burlington and look for 2432 Tribek Ct. on your GPS. The food is ok, but the take out service is horrible!!. For the last several years we have eaten in and placed take out orders. When they didn't have it ready with a 30 minute lead time, I started calling it in an hour ahead of time. No matter what I did they NEVER had it ready and left me standing up front for 30 minutes plus every time. I would contact the manager, appologies given and next time same thing. Tonight I called in and was told 10 minutes. Got there 10 minutes later. After waiting another 10 minutes I'm finally told that the cook hasn't even started our meals. Told me it would be 10 more minutes...told her no it wouldn't and left. Either bad communications with the kitchen or poor service, Either way we won't go back. I recently spent a week in Burlington, with a friend who joined me from Mississippi. Dining out is difficult for me as I have Celiac Disease ( NO wheat, gluten, or cross contamination allowed.) There were three of us- a local friend of my friend, and we had a delightful lunch- even with the challenges that confronted me pretty much everywhere when I made this very special trip to the South. This having been said, we had an excellent, good natured and very accommodating server, (Becky) who went out of her way to hep me with substitutions to make my lunch enjoyable. I must say, also, that I read more than 20 reviews, many of which appeared to be local, and I am grateful to not have crossed paths with such rude people. They were not there when our group enjoyed many delightful menu items. I particularly enjoyed the potato salad, and am going to use an ingredient I had not tried before. Lest I be skewered by rudeness, I am not giving up what I thought made it so good! My friend had the Catfish, and she enjoyed every bite. Never having had catfish, I stuck with Gluten Free sides, selected with the help of my friends and Becky ( server). She was so delighted to hear why we were in town, she selected a special item I bought to leave in my Good Friends refrigerator, with a note from Becky. The restaurant was clean, the restroom also clean, and the food was good. Some people ought to think about the fact that local places are dependent on HONEST reviews- So if you are not a CIA graduate or a professional restaurant reviewer, and if perhaps you are not PERFECT ( and if you ARE perfect, you would use your virtue in kindness, not so much criticism,) perhaps lighten up and remember that your neighbors work here and ought to be able to do the best they can and be proud of their establishment and their community. read more

Went here today based on recommendations from other people, I might give it another shot, but here was our experience. First off, the place was clean and the service was really great. It's a sit down restaurant, but you order in the front and they give you a ticket for your table and bring the food out to you. They had freshly baked bread and desserts out front available for purchase. The cashier that took our order was extremely friendly, made small talk, and was all around great. My wife ordered the fried bologna sandwich on sourdough bread with onion rings and I ordered the special: Herb baked chicken with two sides: fried okra and fried green tomatoes. The food was pretty much horrible. My wife's sandwich was decent, but I think you would have to go out of your way to mess up a fried bologna sandwich, so they aren't earning many points for me for that. The onion rings seemed like they were frozen from Sysco as I've had the same thing from plenty of other restaurants before. The herb baked chicken was 100% pathetic. It had obviously been reheated, but not enough because it was cold in the middle. The chicken was completely overcooked and dry as a result. There was a type of breading on it which was completely void of any seasoning on it. I tried adding salt and pepper on top of it, but the damage was already done. If it was herb baked at one time, the herbs must have ran away from the overcooked chicken because they didn't want to be associated with it! Enough about the chicken... The sides were, meh. The fried okra definitely tasted pre-made and frozen. The fried green tomatoes we weren't too sure about. The breading tasted like it may have been home made, but they were overly greasy and not great. I do have trouble rating this place as low as I did...it doesn't seem like they should be marketing themselves as a place that would have things like chicken pie or baked chicken...this place seems like it should solely focus on sandwiches, and they have a lot of those. If we can, we'll try and visit this place again and grab some sandwiches because the service is the one saving grace of this place for my wife and I. read more

Delancy's is a combination Meat and two / sandwich / homemade dessert place. I am a regular, having eaten here 100's of times over several years. . I like to eat primarily vegetables, and they have a good assortment. I particularly like the green beans, pinto beans, collard greens, and crowder peas with corn. I am also partial to their vegetable beef soup. Chicken & rice soup is also excellent. They have a lot of bakery items that they do in-house. Brownstone cake is great, as is the pecan pie. If you can't haven't enjoyed Delancy's I feel sorry for you, truly. Delancy's (although the name sounds sorta like an Irish Pub) is the BEST, down-home NC country cooking, just like Maw Maw used to make that I've had in NC! Nothing tastes canned or cafeteria like. I was blessed to marry into a country family where meals came from the garden and recipes were handed down by generation and everything made by hand - no short cuts. This is the ONLY place I've found in all of NC with real scratch made Banana Pudding (you know what I'm talking about if you've ever had the privilege) among many other phenomenal desserts. Don't tell Maw Maw but some of their dishes are even better then hers - and that is saying a lot as we're talking generations of refined country cooking. I seriously doubt anything on Yelp will influence their business as they have an extremely loyal local following of folks who probably aren't aware of, nor could they give a flip what Yelp or anyone else has to say as they know great food at a great price! And it can be very healthy if you can control yourself (good luck w/that). You could put many of Delancy's dishes next to some of the finest homemade dishes I've ever enjoyed anywhere and they would be in contention. No they're not perfect but if anything goes wrong they'll fix you right up. If you're a food snob, carpet bagger or some self anointed gourmet just go elsewhere but if you like fresh, delicious, hearty scratch-made country food, served simply at a reasonable price by some of the nicest people in the world, y'all come. You won't be disappointed! I don't write many reviews and have reservations about too many people finding out about and over-running Delancy's but many of these reviews are unfair and inaccurate. The last two pounds of crackers have been stale and tonight the fried green tomatoes were so greasy that they couldn't be eaten. The ground steak was really good. I love patronizing family owned businesses, so we tried this one tonight and were greatly disappointed. The burger and the BLT were very good - that's the only reason I gave them 2 stars and not 1, but the sides - yuck. My husband's French fries had been recooked, I'm sure - hard and not tasty. We asked for a fresh portion but they never came. I had pasta salad and it had a bad flavor, like it might be going bad, so I didn't eat it. The service was very slow. The tables needed to wiped off. The wait people bring your food with no silverware - you have to ask for it, then they go and get some. I thought it might have been just an off night, but now I see many other negative reviews. They play Christian music, and that is nice, but if you are going to represent Jesus, you should be top notch! read more

This is a good meat and 2. The vegetables are good and the service is very good. The biggest complaint that I have, and if you like cornbread, don't go early. The skinflint owner will not bake fresh cornbread until the leftovers from the day (or heck, maybe 2 days) before have been used up. I called in a to go order, and was told that it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. I got there about 20 minutes after I called and no one came up to the front! After 5 minutes, about 4 different employess walked right by the cash register and didn't say a word to me or even say "we'll be right with you". Finally, a girl came up to the cash register and asked for my name. I gave it to her and she went to the back to get my order. Then, she comes back and tells me that the order STILL isn't ready. I had to wait another 5-10 minutes before I got my order. I get home and opened up the box and my hamburger steak was BURNT TO A CRISP. I'm so pissed off right now. I can't believe they actually put that black hockey puck disguised as a hamburger steak in the box! I'm a regular customer here, but lately the customer service and food has been TERRIBLE. There were only 2 families in there, so it definitely wasn't busy. I don't think I am ever going to go back. They must have a new owner/manager because I didn't recognize any of the employees in there. That sucks because it used to be a good place to eat. read more

Attention, Burlington vegetarians, yes both of you, if you miss being able to get southern style comfort food sides without fear of what's cooked in with it (ham, fat back, bacon, etc) you need to check this place out. 15 every day sides to choose from with other daily specials (Mon & Wed is collard green day!) and it was amazing. 4 veggie plate was $5.79, came with a cornbread muffin, and everything I had was delicious. They also offer a grilled veggie wrap, which I'm sure is great but I was too excited about trying all the sides so I passed it up this time. I live in Greensboro but work in Burlington Mon-Fri and will definitely be back for lunch often. Edit: I should also mention that the 3 people I went with are all meat eaters and loved their food too, one of them often gets a prime rib sandwich everywhere if it's on the menu and he said this one was one of the best he's had in a while. There are plenty of other southern style home cookin meat dishes that I'm sure are fantastic. I was just extremely happy to find a place I could eat healthy, well, and cheap. This is a hidden little gem in Burlington. It tastes just like grandma's homemade comfort food, and I love that you can buy a variety of dishes in the refrigerated case to bring home for later. The broccoli casserole is wonderful. I've heard good things about the deserts, but so far they've just been okay in my opinion. They also sell canned jams, bags of candy, and other assorted goodies. It's a very casual environment where you order at the front and they bring the food to your table.
