Met up with some friends for dinner and had a great meal! My wife and I hadn't been to The Root since moving out of the area and we've missed it! It's always been one of our favorite spots in the Elon/Burlington area. Service was great, food was superb and the fellowship was even better. Everyone enjoyed their food and we'll be back more often! If you are looking for good, healthy and hearty food this is your place!

Caesar salad with Blackened Salmon

I went to lunch at this restaurant with two coworkers. The atmosphere is perfect for any type of lunch. They have outside seating as well. We arrived around 11:45am and were immediately seated. Our waitress, Amy, came shortly after being seated. She was a very bubbly waitress. I wanted a Caesar salad but wasn't sure if I wanted shrimp or salmon. So I asked Amy and she suggested the blackened salmon. This salad was perfect! And I mean in every way. The lettuce was just right. Absolutely no water was in the bottom of the bowl. The croutons were just the right size and amount. Not too hard and not too soft. The Parmesan was evenly distributed in the bowl. My two favorite things about this salad were the salmon and the dressing. The salmon was flaky, flavorful, and was the perfect size to ensure I had salmon with each bite of salad. Now the dressing! I could bottle that up and purchase! Let me say this, I usually swap Caesar dressing and ask for ranch. Caesar usually tastes a little salty and kinda tart to me. But since I was talking and forgot to ask, I sucked it up and kept it. And my gosh! I'm glad I did. It was not salty or tart. It was creamy and delicious! It seemed as if they figured how to evenly mix the flavors to make it just right. One last thing, I always and I mean always have to ask for extra dressing. Not this time, that cup was the perfect amount for the salad. Full transparency, I really wanted to lick the cup and my bowl when I finished but figured my coworkers would be embarrassed. When we got ready to leave, the line was out the door so I'm glad we walked in when we did. Anyway, I will be back to get another salad and hopefully I get seated in Amy's section because she was really nice and a great waitress!

Met a friend here for dinner and had a great experience. The hostess and our server were very friendly. My friend has some dietary restrictions and this place is perfect for her. Our server was very understanding of her requests. Everything arrived to the table just as requested, very much appreciated! We enjoyed dinner in a booth. The food was delicious and I also enjoyed a cocktail.

Two ate for $41.50 before tip. Still fabulous! The Truffle fries are an absolute must! The Brussels are excellent - service great - tea perfect - trendy and clean and nice.

Grilled salmon with sweet potato fries and garlicky green beans

The Root is an inviting, unpretentious neighborhood restaurant located near Elon's campus. It seems like the perfect place for students to meet up with friends, have a causal date night, or to take the parents when they visit campus. Although my husband and I are well past our college years, we felt just as at home in this establishment. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu has a little something for everyone, with a variety of sandwiches, salads, and a few entrees. I opted for the grilled salmon with sweet potato fries and garlic green beans. My husband ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and fries. Both of us were really happy with our meals; each item was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. We will happily return to The Root and hopefully bring along some friends or family members so they can experience this little gem of a restaurant too!

Alright this diner is out in the country of North Carolina. Don't let that fool you! The Root Burger was phenomenal. I am a sucker for the sautéed mushrooms but the tasty truffle aioli sauce is what brought it home for me! The shaved Parmesan was a great compliment. You can tell these are fresh ingredients. The meat patty was thick and juicy! The sweet potato fries were so good and with being in MC I had to try the grit cakes and they are so tasty. Basically it's grits deep fried on the outside. Really good side dish. I would drive out of my way to eat here. Great find!

I've never had a bad meal here... not even mediocre! The maple salad was perfect with the addition of tofu. Get it.

We made same day reservations a few hours in advance because we figured it would get crowded with Elon parents visiting their kids. I'm glad we did because it was packed 15 minutes after we sat down. Hostess was kind with greeting us and sat us down right away when we arrived. My husband ordered the shrimp & grits and I ordered the pancakes with sausage. Food came within 15 minutes. The pancakes were fluffy and the sausage was nicely cooked. Service was great and one of the servers made sure to keep my water glass filled. The Mark at Elon is very pretty inside. They have a private parking lot outside reserved for Inn guests and we were able to park there because we were at the restaurant. I would recommend this place if you have guests in town and want something slightly nicer than your typical breakfast diner. They do serve lunch and dinner here too, but I can't speak on that food just yet. I'll have to return to try it out!

They then had to move us to a bigger table because of the fire hazard the high chair posed. They told us they would move our drinks for us and we were to leave them. They left us sitting at the new table for over 30 minutes without our drinks. They then brought out salads but we had no cutlery to eat with. Finally they brought us some and had to take drink orders again. I felt sorry for the new server who was caught up in this mess with little guidance from her management and did a really great job providing excellent customer service to rectify the dissatisfaction. The Caesar salad was crisp with the right amount of dressing. The Onion Blossom appetizer was delicious and disappeared quickly. The chicken fried steak with Green Beans was delicious and expertly marinated and prepared. All the meals were very good and the quality of the food and the great service from the replacement server earned a 4 star. I recommend this restaurant, all the food is good.

I can't remember our waiter, but he was great. We started with the fried pickles, they were very salty but in a good way. Something you definitely eat while drinking. I had the NY steak cooked to medium and it was cooked to perfection! With a side of broccoli and baked potatoes. I was a little weary when we went to pack up the rest of the fried pickles and under the parchment paper was a French fry. Made me wonder do they wash and clean them or just throw parchment paper in the basket. All in all it was a good visit. I would definitely be back.

This restaurant is run by the same folks as Grill 584 (Koury Corporation, I think), and is under the direction of the chef there, David Katz - who was at the late, lamented Boss Hogg in Greensboro, and some time at Bullock's BBQ in Durham. They are offering an dinner menu that is strong on smoked meats - Hand Pulled Pork (basically Eastern NC style with some nice heat), BBQ Chicken, Smoked Turkey Breast, Texas Style Brisket, and "Smackin Good' St Louis Style Ribs, and a number of nice sides. They offer wine and have a decent beer selection. Only non-BBQ meat on the menu is Fried Chicken Livers - this is a BBQ joint setup. The meats are featured in Take Out Specials - pint of Pork BBQ for $9.95, pound of brisket for $12.95, whole smoked BBQ Chicken for $9.95. Sides are available as well. I've only tried the Pork BBQ, and it is every bit as good as that that was served at Boss Hogg - solid Eastern NC style, with some very nice heat. Looking forward to trying the other meats, especially the Brisket and Chicken. Dinner is Tue - Sat, 5 to 9. They offer a small lunch buffet, Mon thru Friday - 11AM to 2PM, for $7.49, including drink, and small salad bar. The items vary from day to day, but include Fried Chicken (very, very good, if a little salty), Chicken Pot Pie, Country Style Steak, Spaghetti, Baked Chicken, BBQ Pork, BBQ Chicken, Fried Fish (Friday), and Baked Salmon. The meats are pretty good to ordinary - the Fried Chicken is very good, the BBQ Pork is not the style served at night - covered with a sweet, tomato sauce. The veggies are ordinary to plain bad - canned or frozen, and poorly seasoned. But the meats are generally worth the price, as is the salad bar.
