I've been sitting on writing this review for awhile, probably longer than I should, but I still remember the evening pretty well and recently came across the photos that I had yet to post, so here goes nothing! But that is kind of the point, a restaurant like Marisol should leave you anxious to go home and tell others about what a great eating experience you had. In my case, while the food overall was good, I wasn't taken aback by anything, and at this price point, I feel that I should have been. Things started off really well, the server was eager to explain the restaurant and menu, and stayed very attentive throughout. Honestly, for my taste, overly attentive. But it's not a big place, and also wasn't very busy, so it makes sense he would have stayed vigilant with us. After ordering drinks, we received a small starter of goat cheese on crostini with some bruschetta, a nice way to kick things off. Then, one of the highlights, the basket of incredible breads was presented to us. If he had left the basket at the table, we probably would have run through it all, but we did have a few pieces with butter, that were beyond excellent. The appetizer course was fantastic. Flash fried buttermilk shrimp, house made gravlax, tomato pie, cavatelli, and a duck special. The tomato pie, I honestly wish i could have ordered a larger slice for my entrée, because I could eat that every day. The gravlax was kind of like eating lox, and I dug the texture with the crispy bread and shmear. The shrimp were plump, but given the price, nothing about them set them apart from fried shrimp elsewhere. The duck.. I said earlier about the tomato pie, maybe just give me the duck and tomato pie for an entrée, I would have been happy. For my main, i got the blackened NC mountain trout, and like others at my table, this is where the meal started to fall flat. The trout just didn't set itself apart in any way, other than the fish being clearly fresh. The blackening didn't add much flavor, nor did the sauce that it came with. For this being the supposed centerpiece of our experience, it was disappointing. I found myself wishing I got the duck breast that someone else had. For dessert, we shared the vanilla bean creme brulee and the bread pudding. The crème brûlée was well executed, which is no ordinary feat, so big props for that. The bread pudding however was the total opposite. I have never really encountered dry bread pudding before, but this was it. Even though it was covered in chocolate sauce (would have just liked a dish of that) and ice cream, still somehow dry to the bone. I was surprised the waiter didn't ask about it, given it was barely touched by all of us, and he had been so attentive to everything else. In the end, for the money, I don't know that I would return. As I said earlier, at this price point, it kind of needs to be great from top to bottom. Some of it was, but the most important part was kind of pedestrian. We've lived in the area for 30 years and had never been to Marisol until a week ago. We went with another couple and sat in the bar area. Wow--what a letdown! The restaurant is located in a little strip shopping center and the ambiance (or lack thereof) fits that perfectly, but the prices don't. Very expensive food. The food was ok, but overall, the service was the most distracting part of our experience. The pacing was off and the servers were untrained, abrupt, and lacked finesse. It bordered on aggressive. My Elite crew and I recently decided to check out Marisol near the Adam's Farm area of Greensboro. This restaurant has been around since the 90s, so it must be doing something right and we wanted to check it out for ourselves. With it being everyone's first time there the waiter was quite attentive and described the entire menu to us in great detail.  For drinks my best friend and I ordered a bottle of wine to split. We were struggling to decide until our waiter swayed us with the Vouvray. Although it was slightly sweet, it didn't bother us and complimented the meal well. The chef surprised us with an amuse-bouche that was a yummy little goat cheese bruschetta. Then I was delighted to see our waiter approach us with a plentiful basket of bread. I opted for the focaccia, and it was incredible. The texture was so soft and spongy with a slight sweetness. I could have eaten so many slices, but we decided to share some apps instead. For appetizers we ordered the flash fried buttermilk shrimp, house made gravlax, Marisol's tomato pie, house made cavatelli, and a duck special not listed on the menu. My favorites were the cavatelli and the tomato pie. Although the house made cavatelli was in a lobster stock cream sauce, it was still surprisingly light. I loved the richness and depth of the tomato pie. The gravlax reminded me of a deconstructed lox bagel except with crackers instead of bread. We each got salads next. I opted to split the caesar with fried oysters with my bestie. The oysters were cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the added crunch of the toasted pine nuts and the slight spiciness from the cayenne pepper croutons and horseradish caesar dressing. For my entree I ordered the pan seared & roasted dotted rose snapper. I've gotta say this is where the experience began to fall apart a little bit for me. I was not super impressed by the snapper. Although a delicious-sounding caper parsley lemon vinaigrette is listed with it on the menu, it was almost like they forgot to put it on the place. This led the fish to be dry, tough and overcooked. I will say the accompanying scallop was delicious, soft, and very well done. It's disappointing when your main dish falls flat. We decided to end the evening by sharing the vanilla bean creme brulee and the bread pudding du jour. The creme brulee was the clear winner. It was beautifully caramelized on the top and creamy on the inside. The bread pudding, however, was pretty dry. I find that impressive considering it was covered in ice cream and dark chocolate sauce. The ice cream was tasty but the bread pudding itself was just layers of dryness with nothing creating cohesion or holding it together. Overall, we enjoyed our first experience at Marisol. I will order some different things next time for sure. read more

Very expensive, well cooked food that seems like a menu from around 2002. Median age in there had to be around 70. Service apparently used to be one of the best parts but we were unimpressed. This fine, upscale restaurant flies under the radar in Greensboro for some reason - maybe it's the location, or the eclectic menu, or the pricing. Probably a little bit of all, but location and price probably lead. It is expensive, especially by Greensboro standards, but I've never had a meal here that I though was not worth the cost, and like most upscale restaurants, your drink choices drive the price - teetotalers are so lucky, not happy, just lucky. It is a small place, with some bar space in a room separate from the dining area. I would definitely suggest reservations here, you very well may be able to walk in, but the seating might suffer. The staff here is polished, articulate, and knows the menu, if fact they'll recite it for you. This is never a large menu, but it is definitely an interesting one, driven by availability and season, and is raised to another level by the creativity of the kitchen staff, who are prominently on display. From the pre-appetizers, thru the salads, thru the entrees, and dessert, if you've saved room, this menu will satisfy, surprise, and bring you back. I am a lover of duck, so I will tend to gravitate there, but beef, lamb, seafood, and even pork, are perfectly prepared, and beautifully plated. I am full! The bread, the cocktails were perfect!! Loved the Fried lobster. It melted in my mouth. The gnocchi was good when grabbing a fork full of gnocchi, cheese , crab and herbs- not so good when eating any one of those items separately. The dish felt like it was at war with each other. I could have died after eating my curry pumpkin soup. Simply heavenly. However by the time I got to my $38.00 entrée I was so stuffed, I ate only two bites. Those two bites of my duck were unimpressive. Nothing special and a bit dry. Our service was topnotch inspite of a few glitches with the meal, I can't wait to spend another $195.00 for dinner for two again. This is my favorite restaurant in Guilford County. Fabulous restaurant. Food is off the chart. Everything is great. Specials are unique and wonderful. Service is from true professionals, people that do this as professionals. And they have been there many years. Wine list is excellent and easily recognizable wines so you know what you are getting. Bread is wonderful. Drinks are good. I don't know of anything this restaurant could do better. Is on the expensive side but for what you get it's a good value. The only true five star restaurant in Greensboro! From the moment you walk in the staff makes you feel like family. The set it is rather small but you can see and hear everything in the kitchen. The staff truly understands what service is. I even got up to use the rest room and came back to my napkin folded over the arm of my chair. When you come here it will be expensive, however you are not just paying for a plate of food. You are paying for a amazing experience. Onto the food. We started with the gnocchi which was French in style, absolutely amazing. After that it was onto a very generous bowl of crab and lobster bisque (ordered two should have just shared one). For our entree my girlfriend had the half duck and I had the lamb. All I can say is I was arguing over whether this food was better than some restaurants in NYC and DC. Nice place and great staff. I expected a pretty high quality meal but got "ok" food but nothing special. This place given the fact they have no competition but several times a year when the furniture market is happening should up their game. They could be amazing by focusing on a few really great entrées and skipping the frozen packaged crap that any resto can warm up. Service was excellent and the wine list is impressive. Surprisingly the prices were also really high compared to almost any place I've been even NYC. $32 for what appeared to be frozen fish patties instead of flounder is just bad business. The sad story of my dining adventures is another restaurant that is pretending to be real but actually serving warmed up crap and calling it fine dining. read more

I had heard great things about this restaurant but was underwhelmed. Fish was, well fishy and hard to eat. Gnocchi was OK. A bit over cooked. Muscles were so so, but the broth was great and the 3 small crispy bread slices were delish soaking it up. The lemon drop martini was good, but I've ha better. I think they've rested on their laurels and their reputation for awhile. Maybe they need totes harder. After all, it's been several years since they opened and had all the accolades. read more

Fine dining in the Gate City. Initially, I was frustrated and maybe a bit annoyed at a few things... - They were playing some sort of satellite radio and there were frequent DJ breaks - Wine list is handed to me and drink orders are being taken before we see a menu (I'll order wine, but what are we eating? Fish? Pork? Lamb? Hot dogs?) - Menu is interesting and then waitstaff rattles off 5 appetizer specials and another 5 main course specials. That's great that they are so flexible and that the menu changes every night, but good lord... I can't keep track of all the things you told me. Print it out. Zillions of restaurants do that. Get a chalk board and write it out. Something. - The main courses were huge portion-wise. This is why we didn't order dessert. So, there you go. I was initially very frustrated with this place but every damn thing we ate was delicious. And the staff treated us as if we were family. And it was warm and inviting and there are cute dog portraits on the murals in the bar area. They've apparently been running Marisol in this very interesting way (you see the actual menu very late in the game) for 15+ years and I don't think they will change... but good golly. A few tweaks and this place would be stellar. Oh, it's located way out High Point Road. If you are staying at Grandover (as we were) it's pretty close. read more

Absolutely outstanding service. Our waitress has an outstanding rote memory - the way she was able to recite the long list of specials was incredible. We went for the full Monty and enjoyed a 5 course meal complimented with drinks and wine. The menu selections were innovative and delectable. The herbs, spices, and accoutrements used in each dish to realize the full flavor experience of the main food item ( fish, liver, salad...) was incredible.
