Baked Ziti
Melody B.

A small hole in the wall Italian place located in downtown Burlington. We usually order their pizza to-go, but I decided to try their baked ziti. I was across the street at the Mini Dingo (a local bar) and the counter person said they'd deliver the food to me. I was quoted 10-15 minutes. After 25 minutes, I went to check on the food and the entrance way was crowded with no employee in sight. After another almost 10 minutes waiting, the counter person finally showed up with my food. I should have known better since I order here pretty regularly when I'm downtown, but I highly recommend not bothering with them delivering it and just going to pick it up. Now on to the food... the baked ziti came with a side salad and a ton of bread. The baked ziti was really good, but the star of the show was the bread. All in all, decent Italian food, but budget some extra time when ordering because it may take longer than quoted.

"scallops" one broken apart

been here before w no complaints; quiet, good food, pleasant music and staff. this was my first time ordering the broiled seafood which says on the menu it has scallops in it. ive been pescatarian for 8 years and eaten my fair share of scallops. these were strange little pucks of whitefish. nothing about their taste of texture was similar to scallops. said something about it and was told, "i assure you, they are scallops"

Bruschetta
John S.

First time trying this place and I was a disappointed in the food. Ordered: mozzarella sticks, bruschetta, Hawaiian pizza, and linguine pescatore. Mozzarella sticks: Hard to mess up. Marinara sauce was ok. Bruschetta: Too much cheese. Couldn't taste any of the basil and the acidity of the tomatoes was drowned by cheese. Bread was too soggy. Hawaiian Pizza: Soggy af. Literally felt like I was eating wet bread. Linguine Pescatore: Scallops were definitely not fresh and had been sitting for a while. Shrimp was well cooked. Clams seemed "instant". Flavor of sauce was decent and the pasta was cooked well. All in all, not a great first experience. Maybe COVID restricted some freshness.

The place!

I looked online for photos of it ahead of time, couldn't find any, so once we were seated I got directions to it and checked it out. It is simple and adequate but just not what I was looking for so my friend and I decided to order from the menu instead. We started with sweet tea and unsweet tea. The unsweet was nice, freshly brewed and not bitter in the least. The sweet tea was too sweet for my friend to drink so we had the waitress come back with an unsweet and mixed it half and half. I sipped it prior to the mix and wow, way too much sugar. I ordered the Chicken Pita and fries. The sandwich was delicious but despite having asked for cucumber sauce (you get a choice of ranch or cucumber) there was no sauce on it. The chicken was delicious though and nicely seasoned, plenty of onions, and the pita was fresh. I'm not a big fan of crinkle fries but they were a solid 3, as good as crinkle fries can be in my opinion. My friend ordered chicken pie, fried okra, sweet potato, and cornbread. The chicken pie looked more like chicken ala king, not enticing, and no topping or crust. So odd. The flavor was not good, bland and just odd for something served as chicken pie and in the south. The okra seemed homemade and was good, and the sweet potato was fresh and tasty. The cornbread is sweet cornbread and was moist. I had quite a bit of tea so I visited the restroom before we left. Big mistake. The toilet paper was just a big roll balanced on the handicap rail, the paper towels for drying your hands was the same, and the floors and door going in and out were dirty...as in most likely not cleaned well in quite some time. Will I return? Not sure. There are limited dining places in Burlington that are not fast food so perhaps, but I certainly hope they pay better attention to cleaning going forward. When a public space looks like that restroom, it makes me wonder what the behind-the-scenes spaces look like.

I am giving it four stars because each time I have gone with friends there is mention of how the restaurant reminds them of segregation in the 60's. It does give a slight boycott vibe that doesn't sit well, and makes me question my support. Have to be honest.

My First Visit to Smithfield's -- And Probably My Last…read more I normally don't take the time to write reviews, but this experience was disappointing enough that I felt I had to share it. While traveling through Burlington, North Carolina, I saw the signs for Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q and decided to give it a try. Since I live in Georgia, where there aren't any Smithfield's locations near me, I thought it would be worth stopping. I ordered the large shrimp platter with coleslaw and potato salad. I assumed the small and large shrimp platters might refer to the size of the shrimp. Nope! The difference is simply the amount of shrimp you get. Lesson learned! I took my order to go, and when I got to my car, I found two cardboard platters in the bag. One had shrimp, fries, hush puppies, and coleslaw. The other had additional shrimp and three more hush puppies. What I didn't find were any napkins or plastic utensils. When you're traveling and taking food to go, those are pretty basic things to include. I also ordered potato salad, but I honestly forgot about it until I was already on the highway heading south to Georgia, so I can't say for certain whether it was missing or whether I simply overlooked it when checking my order. Now, let's talk about the shrimp. You know those tiny little shrimp you sometimes find in shrimp salad at a buffet? That's exactly what these reminded me of! There must have been around 50 of them, although I lost count, and some were ridiculously tiny. They had a little flavor, but they lacked that satisfying shrimp taste you expect when ordering a shrimp platter. The fries weren't something I particularly wanted, since they weren't what I had ordered. The hush puppies were okay, I guess, but they were shaped more like chicken fingers than the hush puppies I was expecting. Overall, this was not the introduction to Smithfield's that I had hoped for. Maybe I should have ordered the chicken instead! If you're specifically looking for shrimp, I honestly think you'd be better off trying Captain D's or even Long John Silver's. Unfortunately, my first visit to Smithfield's will probably be my last. I was looking forward to trying something new while traveling through North Carolina, but I left disappointed. Based on this experience, I wouldn't go out of my way to return.

We were seated within 5 minutes and our server was attentive and nice. Cozy ambience with low romantic lighting. Great for a date. Love all the beautiful flowers in the outdoor garden near the entrance. Food was very tasty but also very rich and heavy. Portions are large so you may want to order a lunch portion if you're not bringing a huge appetite. My Chicken Parmagiano was delicious but 3 people could have split it (I wasn't super hungry). My partner's Alfredo (he added shrimp) was too oily for his taste, but it was good. We both felt sluggish and needed a nap after eating which is not our norm; we generally eat lighter dishes like salads. I recommend that the restaurant start adding a birthday dessert or something special for guests celebrating their birthday at the restaurant.

And it's kind of expensive for very middling food. It's not terrible, but there's nothing special about it. The ambiance is romantic. They keep it dark with interesting lighting, which is nice for a date night. Our server had no personality, but she left us alone, so that was nice. The person waiting on the table next to us seemed great. The problem is, there are 6 or 8 Italian places within 2 miles of each other in Burlington, so there is quite a bit of competition. There are others that are a much better value, and one in particular that, while around the same price, has much more variety and much better food. This is one that after giving it two chances, my wife and I agreed we just aren't interested in visiting again.

My husband and I stopped in on a Thursday evening around 7pm and the place was pretty full. We sat ourselves at a table in the back room, and I noticed how laid back the place was, which is something I really appreciate. Sadly, it seemed that the relaxed vibe extended a bit too far and reflected on their cleanliness, as I noticed all of the chair rails were dusty, the floors a bit littered, our table sticky, and the plastic menus in need of replacing. Service, however, was wonderful. Our waitress was friendly and pretty attentive given how busy she was. My husband was happy with their on tap beer selection, deciding on Red Oak ($3 on Thursdays!). I went with a margarita and it wasn't the best, but thankfully I didn't pay much for it since it was also on special. They were out of the southwestern egg rolls I initially ordered, so I ended up going with the Philly cheesesteak and homemade chips. I enjoyed the cheesesteak's fresh bread; plenty of tender meat, peppers, and onions; and gooey cheese. It could have used more mayonnaise, but it was still quite good. The homemade chips were tasty but undercooked; if I had been hungrier, I definitely would have returned them and asked for a fresh batch. My husband absolutely devoured the cheeseburger and fries he ordered. He said that it was one of the best burgers he's had in quite a while, and this is a guy who loves burgers and eats them often. I want to return to Piedmont Ale House in the future. I think there are some things they seem to do really well, namely burgers and beer at really reasonable prices!

| 4.7/5 -- Great Food, Family-Friendly Atmosphere, with a Few Minor Setbacks…read more First Watch continues to be one of my favorite places to enjoy a quality breakfast or brunch. While this visit wasn't quite as seamless as my previous experiences, the food and overall atmosphere still made it worthwhile. The wait was fairly long, but given the time we arrived and how busy the restaurant was, that was understandable. The food also took a little longer than expected, and unfortunately, there was a mix-up with my order. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict but was served the Classic Ham Benedict instead. Although frustrating, I recognize that the kitchen was handling a high volume of orders, and mistakes can happen. The service was friendly and professional, though it didn't quite match the level of warmth and attentiveness I've experienced during previous visits. That being said, the quality of the food remains consistently impressive! My 8-year-old son absolutely loved the Tres Leches Strawberry French Toast, which I would highly recommend over the standard kids' French toast if you're looking for something a little more substantial. The Tres Leches comes with two slices instead of one, beautifully topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Eggs and bacon must be ordered separately, but that's a relatively minor consideration. As far as pricing goes, the cost can add up fairly quickly, especially when ordering additional sides, but the portions are generous and the quality makes it easier to justify. The restaurant is also very family-friendly, which I appreciate when dining with my son. My biggest recommendation would be to visit during the earlier morning hours. You'll likely have a more relaxed dining experience without the overcrowded atmosphere and potentially receive more attentive service. Overall, despite the longer wait and the mix-up with my order, this was still a 4.7/5 experience. First Watch delivers excellent food, satisfying portions, and an inviting environment. There's room for improvement in consistency during peak hours, but I would absolutely return and recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious, quality breakfast or brunch!

Not rubbery, not chewy, and definitely not some sad, limp noodle pretending to be seafood! The breading was light, golden, and crispy without overpowering the calamari itself. So good, in fact, I made it my main course! That's how calamari ought to be done. Let the seafood shine and don't bury it under a winter coat of breading!
