We have been wanting to try DeFazio's for awhile now after seeing the Barstool pizza review. We finally decided to do it on our most recent trip to VT, however, we did not realize you need to order pizza hours in advance and choose your pick up time so we missed out! For those of you that are planning to order pizza (especially on a busy Friday night), definitely plan in advance! We were, however, able to try their pasta and that is what I am going to review. Will update for pizza if I get the chance. I went online to order pizza an hour before we were set to arrive in Troy, I saw that that only the times available for pizza were two hours later so I thought I would try my luck and call. The wait time was relatively the same for pizza so I asked about pasta. The woman on the phone said we could pick up pasta in an hour so we went with that. I ordered the pesto linguine. The pasta is homemade, I thought it was good, a little thicker than regular linguine. The sauce wasn't exactly pesto to me. It was super creamy and a little greasy, it either had a ton of butter or heavy cream. I don't usually order creamy pasta so I don't think it would have been my first choice if I had known. After reheating the next day, the sauce separated into a ton of grease so that was kind of a negative. My partner got the eggplant parm which he enjoyed. I didn't love the red sauce but I thought the eggplant was good. Based on the pasta alone I may give 3-4 stars, but the overall experience I'll say is 4. Extra points for homemade pasta as well. The service was good, they definitely have an organized system down. There was a walk in that tried to order pizza, the woman at the counter asked the people making pizza if they could squeeze in two pies or if they want to go by the books. They said they could not. Which I was kind of happy about after not being able to order pizza myself! There isn't really much seating, about 3 tables (maybe more in the back) so I wouldn't walk in expecting to sit down. Will definitely be back to try the pizza! And maybe the Italian hangover cake as well! read more

The pizza here is really good. The dough, cheese, and sauce are all extremely tasty, and the airy crust just tops it off perfectly. It's definitely one of the best pizzas in the Capital District, with pleasant employees who take pride in their food. Saw this place listed as one of the best pizza joints in the Troy, NY area and I had to come check it out for myself. What I loved from the get go was the ambience of this mom and pop shop. Very small and intimate with limited seating and the energy is very old school. Ordered a large meat lovers that comfortably fed a party of 5. The sausage was very well seasoned. I could definitely taste the freshness and the spices. Super cheesy and the portions we're very very generous. The service was very accommodating and at no point overbearing. I want to start by saying if I could give this place 0 stars I would. I'd heard the pizza there was good so I wanted to give it a try. I bought a cheese pizza and a piece of hangover cake (Tastes like something premade, definitely not homeade) Saturday night maybe 20 mins before closing. It smelled great so I was excited to get it home and devour it. I started eating it and had maybe 2 slices, reached for a third and saw a huge hair on it. I know for a fact ot couldn't be mine as I shave my head bald and have no hair. By the time I'd got home and started eating it was already closed. So I figured I'd give them a call tomorrow. I called them the next day and they were closed. So I called on Monday and spoke to a manager named Jen (I think that was her name) and I told her what had happened. She offered a $10 credit off my next order. I said I don't even want a credit or a refund I just want the pizza remade. She said she had to speak to the owner and ask him if that could be done. Told me he'd contact me, which he did not. So I called the next day which was Tuesday. I asked if the owner named Matt was there and I heard someone ask him if he could come to the phone. She then came back on the phone and said he wasn't there.. even though I clearly just heard you ask him to come to the phone. He then called me back. He stated his policy that if there isn't contact the day of the issue then they only offer a lousy $10 credit. I informed this clown of an owner that they were closed so I could not contact them. He stated that the policy is firm and there's nothing he can do. So beware of hair and other things tainting your food from here. Tiny hole in the wall - 3 tables total, but a Troy institution. Handmade linguine - yum! Hand tossed pizza and a great assortment of classic Italian desserts. Someone told us "you gotta order THE CAKE," so we did. It's soaked in a bartender's assortment of booze - a buttery, gooey delight. The place is hopping with takeout orders! You might wait for your order- but it might be worth it. They are happy to customize to make what you want. Pasta servings are LARGE, meant for sharing. And if you eat in, they bring an epic loaf of garlic bread to the table. A few cons: sauces can be on the bland side- even tho the pasta itself is excellent. Sadly, they don't seem to know how to cook GF pasta. They have it, but it's not good. This place is poppin and with good reason. Side of the road parking. Phone ringing non stop in the small storefront. Between calls, they sat us by leading us through a skinny ally way to their garden behind the restaurant. String lights above us, a view of their beautiful produce garden. Our server was friendly and genuinely seemed excited for us to be there. This pizza is fantastic. Thin beautiful crust - a delicious dough. I could eat the sauce by the spoonful. We got a side of meatballs to see what they were all about and I am so thankful we did because they came swimming in their incredible sauce. Tables around us were engaged in jovial conversation. Defazio's promotes happy, communal dining. It was a fun as it was delicious. We will be back as soon as possible. read more

I moved about three hours up north to Saratoga county about 5 years ago and have not found pizza that is anywhere comparable to what's back home. When a friend suggested I go to DeFazios in Troy and I tried their pizza, I thought this is hands down the CLOSEST! I'm picky about my crust and the sauce and I have to say this pizza was deliciously in point. The crust was amazing. We had the garlic crust and I lOVE that they give you options! My family and I will not be eating pizza any where else! Now, it's important to me to mention the Italian hangover cake. Yes it's $10 for a slice but.... My choices: Pesto Pizza, Goat Cheese Pizza, Eggplant Florentine Pizza, Roasted Red Peppers Pizza - to name a few. Pizza from DeFazio's is our treat and it has been for years. I believe the business started in the early 1950s. I knew Rocco's parents who were from Italy and they knew how to cook. You will need to order take-out early say, 2:00pm but this place is worth it. Moved here from NYC and have finally found good pizza and real Italian food. The pizza has a delicious crust, not crispy enough, but properly proofed and the right amount of gluten. The sauce flavor is spot on. It is excellent pizza. The house salad is huge, fresh and has a nice mix of lettuces. We had the red pepper pesto and the pesto over linguini. The pasta is made fresh in-house, and they know how to make good sauces. The hangover cake is fantastic, it's a booze soaked pound cake and it it the perfect way to end a great meal. There is very limited seating, so call ahead to reserve a table. It reminds me of the places I grew up with in NYC. read more

I heard this place is super famous. When I got my pizza. It was bit salty. I tried liking it.

Actually used my Yelp cellphone app to place our first ever order at DeFazio's. The app worked great! Kudos to DeFazio's for making that type of ordering system available as I ordered while I was eating some sublime homemade craft ice cream across town at the Dutch Udder. No need to make a phone call and get placed on hold. Sometimes I do love technology. On street parking worked out fine, though DeFazio's isn't located in the nicest of neighborhoods. We visited during the day, so that diminished some fear I guess. Literally something like only 3 tables inside at which to sit and eat, so it's obviously designed primarily for takeout orders. No question, the moment you enter, you can tell this place has been in business a very, very long time, which is typically a good sign. They do Italian dinners and subs and the like, but we came for the pizza and we're glad we did. We ordered a large 1/2 sausage, 1/2 bacon and we enjoyed both halves! Lots of crumbly sausage and tons of bacon as well. The bacon was fine, but I would've enjoyed a smokier flavor to it. Plenty of cheese to make me happy but, I would've liked just a little more sauce as I didn't really taste it much. The definitive component to their pizza is their crust. It's not super thin, though it is soft inside, so it'll stand up to your fold or your simple cheese pull away from the rest of the pizza. It's not really floppy at all, and that's a good thing; this pie's slices have a little substance, yet are still totally foldable if you like folded pizza slices. Minimal crust char, so I'd have liked a little more of that. Next order, I'll probably ask for extra char and see how it turns out. This is a rock solid pizza pie shop and one I see myself frequenting again. Next time around I'm thinking I'll try one of their specialty pies. Prices are good for the quality you get at DeFazio's. Our large ran just over 17 dollars after tax. Overall, I didn't find our pizza to be perfect, but with just a couple tweaks, could be very, very good. They are indeed serving a better quality NY style pizza than the typical slice joints you see in mall food courts or in strip shopping malls throughout the greater Capital Region. And, a little side note, the slices reheat quite nicely in your at home toaster oven! read more

I ordered a takeout of a 16 inch sausage mushroom with extra cheese. While expected to be an awesome experience, I was left after looking at it a couple minutes wondering who I ordered from! The pizza was lukewarm hot, but that's about the end of the good things about the pizza. For one thing, it was burnt all along the crust and for another, and had the sausage, mushrooms and cheese on half the pie shifted all the way towards the crust, leaving the middle, and ends on many slices with nothing on them. The pizza did not have the spectacular taste that I have grown to know and love about DeFazio's. I even called them to let them know about the incident having all the toppings almost towards the crust. They gave me a little bit over five dollars back, which, in my opinion doesn't cut it for a pizza that costs over $35 or more including tip! They should ask invest a little bit of time training the people that deliver or stock the vehicle, on how to handle the pizzas. They should also have better oversight on who is cooking these pizzas and other food as well, as I remember not too long ago, receiving some pretty tough linguine noodles with clam less sauce on a order. I hope it was just a couple of bad occurrences. read more

Yall needa stop actin like your Michelin star reviewers. The pizza is gas if you're passing by. The crust is light and airy even despite being thicker (which is great bc the pizza actually fills you up), the sauce is sweet and bold which they give you a respectable amount and same with the cheese which to me is kinda standard in the pizza making department of things. I would best describe it as a hybrid of deep dish pizza with a super light crust. Now if that doesn't sound like your thing go somewhere else. Service is good enough for me. Smells great inside, pretty cozy but it's nothing high end, you're there to grab a good pie and get out. One bite everyone knows the rules: 9.0 for me. read more

I had been looking forward to trying out DeFazios for a while, so made it a point to stop by when in the Albany/Troy area. They advertise 6 types of pizza dough on their website, but only had 2 types of dough the day I visited, so went with a large cheese pizza on traditional white dough (had wanted one on the spicy red pepper dough, but maybe I'll get to try it out on another visit if I return). The pizza (3.5/5) was decent and will definitely satisfy your pizza craving, but it didn't wow me enough to consider it as one of the better "must visit" pizza places. The bread dough they use for crust was ok, but slightly burnt at spots. If I had to pick one, the cheese was the best part of the pizza with sauce and crust being merely average. Perhaps I visited on one of their off days, but I'd be willing to give them another shot when in the area. It would be nice if they advertised which doughs they had on a particular day on their website. The Italian hangover cake (5/5) was an absolutely delight to the taste buds, with moist and flavorful cake. I'd recommend that any day of the week. The staff was very friendly, so overall a solid 4/5 visit even though I had higher hopes for a better pizza experience. read more

Phenomenal Pizza. You can't get much better then this for authentic flavor and fresh ingredients. I'm actually lactose intolerant and have had the vegan pizza and it was amazing. Don't go in there looking for your pizza. Go to the door to the right of it - that isn't really marked well. Don't ask, I don't get it either. Not sure what the hype is about. Bacon pizza was fine, good amount of crumbled bacon, but the crust is too thick for our taste. Salad was good, as described on menu, and was fresh. Came with garlic bread, also good. However the pizza was the draw, and we discovered it's certainly not the best in Troy. We probably won't order again, but you might like it if you enjoy a thicker crust. read more

Defazio's doesn't really need a review. They have been doing what they have been doing for a long time. They make wood fired pizza that is among the best in the area. Extra points for the BYOB policy. During my visit with some friends I enjoyed the smoked mozzarella pie. It was strongly recommended by our server. It was delicious with beautiful whole tomatoes. I felt it needed more garlic but I absolutely loved it. We also ordered the fra diavolo pie. It packed a serious punch. Spicy and delicious. The sausage is fantastic! Crispy crust, beautiful char. I find myself wondering why it's been so long since I have been here! Maybe it's that I usually find myself longing for take out from these guys on a Sunday afternoon on the way home from some adventure and every time I realize they are closed. Or is it my inability to remember that they are usually slammed on Saturday night - for good reason! Regardless of the reason this is the spot to come sit and stay for a meal with your byob bag. While we waited they brought out garlic bread that primed our palates for the rest of the meal. We started with new antipasto with the sweet and spicy sausage. It disappeared rapidly! Fresh salad with just the right amount of dressing. We then had a few other dishes to share- chicken Parmesan with homemade linguini, penne with Alfredo sauce, broccoli and chicken and a traditional crust black olive pie! They made us a custom chicken Parmesan - vegan cheese since we had someone who is lactose intolerant ... the chicken is breaded with sheep milk cheese that they were very thoughtful to point out. This is the first time I have gone through the trouble to comment on a meal but here goes: We visited Defazio's with high expectations after viewing all the hype online. I will admit the pizza was good, but I had an experience that doesn't happen very often. My 11-year-old grandson ordered pasta and meatballs and as he always does, he asked for no cheese on it. Our pizza came first and after what seemed like too long, his pasta showed up covered in cheese. The server came and didn't look thrilled to hear his complaint but asked me, "do you have time to wait for another plate?". I told her I did. Now some guy comes out of the kitchen to our table and says, "do you know the meatballs have cheese in them?". I said he didn't want cheese on it, that all. Now of course for our benefit, because he is talking loud enough to various staff for the whole restaurant to hear: "the meatballs have cheese in them." He does this maybe 5 times acting like he is the 11-year-old. We waited maybe 30 to 45 minutes after we were done with our pizza wondering why this plate is taking so long to come. Finally, the server comes and says, "you can pay now if you want". I wasted at least 30 minutes thinking this kid was going to eat. I had to take him to Perreca's and they were able to make him pasta like he wanted without a hitch.
