First time visit to Verdile's Restaurant in Troy, NY Sun 3/16/25 6pm. Highly recommended by our daughter & her man. So we accepted their invitation. This is a family owned restaurant for 80+ years. Consistently wins "Best of" awards locally. Thought they made reservations, dining was full of reservations. We opted to sit at a table in the bar area. Good options as Peter the bartender was also or server. Our drinks were Peroni on tap ($7) & Malbecs ($10ea). Menu is Italian-American. They offer 4 soups ($4cup/$5bowl), apps $8-16, salads $12/16, antipasto $20 & 25. Pizza $11-17. Pasta $18-25 note: you can make your own pasta plate from 8 pastas & 6 sauces ($15-18). Many other dinners eggplant, chicken & veal parmigiana, scampi, alfredo, piccatta, etc. Also steaks & seafood are offered. Our choices were Fettuccine Alfredo w/shrimp ($19), Chicken Piccatta ($26), Shrimp Scampi ($25), & House Specialty Chicken Scarpariello, chicken, broccoli, sausage, vinegar peppers in a garlic & olive oil sauce ($28) - Scarpariello is a rarely found on menus and it was Perfecto! All dinners were served hot to the table. Italian bread served w/ meals. All dinners are served with side of spaghetti or a choice of 2 sides. Hate to nitpick on just one thing that we thought you could do better - the Italian greens were mushy. Now to dessert. Some patrons come here just for Chef Vinnie's Award Winning Carrot Cake. Came for the very first time. The decor is tasteful and transports you back to a good old fashioned Italian Restaurant. We were waiting for the Sapranos to come walking in the door! I grew up in the Lansingburgh area so I've known about Verdiles for many years. For those that do not know Verdiles, it is a family run restaurant and back when they first started it was their mother who made the pasta sauce and meatballs. Her recipes are still used today. I love going there, the staff is very warm and welcoming. Everyone is treated like family. The atmosphere reminds me of a 1960's Italian restaurant. They have made many updates and changes to the restaurant but it still has that vibe. I love looking at all the pictures of the Verdiles family that are around the restaurant. I recommend their homemade pasta with your meal. Great food, great atmosphere and great service. You can't go wrong. read more

It has been quite a few years since SO and I dined at Verdile's. Servers used to be all men in tuxes, but this visit we were greeted by a lovely young woman who was quite efficient taking our order. There is a parking on the side of the building. Appetizer was fried calamari, which comes with choice of marinara, cocktail sauce or remoulade. Tentacles and rings were cooked to perfection, not greasy, tender and golden crispy delicious. Enough for two to share without totally ruining your dinner. Dinner entrees do not include a side salad but does include a lovely loaf of bread. I ordered the fettuccine alfredo with shrimp and scallops. Alfredo sauce was thick and heavenly, pasta was homemade/fresh, just never enough shrimp and scallops for a pescetarian. Was glad to see Verdile's still open. Verdile's has been added to the state historic registry. Ever since that happened earlier this year, my husband and I talked about going back for a meal. We finally made it. The restaurant opens at 3pm. We got there at 3:30pm on a Saturday and the parking lot was pretty packed. As soon as you walk through the front entrance, there's a large sign at the bar that reads, "1943." That's the year Verdile's opened and after seeing that sign you'll never forget it. Since we didn't have reservations, we sat at the bar near the large screen tv. There's also plenty of tables. String lights serve as decoration around the windows. I think the meal we were eating was an early dinner. A lot of work went into the preparation which took about a half hour. I ordered Chicken Marsala. My favorite. There's all sorts of side dishes and flexibility. I asked for two vegetables. My husband ordered Veal Gallo with ziti. He said it was cooked perfectly. TJ was tending bar. He was friendly and efficient. He took our orders right away. When he served the beer, offered my husband a chilled glass, which made him happy. Details like that are important to him. Somehow my husband thought we still had room for dessert even though we hadn't finish our entrees. TJ pointed out that the carrot cake was made on premises and that the slice was big, big enough to share. When he served up the slice, we were in shock and he was smiling. It was the biggest slice of cake we'd ever seen. In fact, everyone at the bar had something to say about it. The man seated to the right of my husband remarked, " You could feed seven people with that." He was probably right. Everyone at the bar laughed. We had a lot of leftovers to take home and eat the next day. It was a fun and delicious meal. read more

The waiters were dressed very nicely in all black, but I assume they were dressed for a funeral because this place is DEAD. Worst chicken parm I've ever received. I like when my food tastes good. Unfortunately, this dish tasted disgusting. My lovely fiancée and I were looking forward to a delicious Italian meal, as we had been dieting for the previous two weeks. For our "cheat night" a friend recommended Verdile's. Sadly, the only people who cheated were the Verdile's kitchen staff as they apparently used six month old cooking oil to deep fry my chicken parm. The taste was unbearable, and by the 4th or 5th bite the appearance was almost unrecognizable. Imagine a bucket of chum with a drizzle of watery tomato sauce. As a result, my once-glowing fiancée had a stomach ache and retired to our bedroom, ashen faced. I thought: "there goes my romantic night." And to make matters worse, I wasn't nearly full. I spent the waning hours of the evening alone on my couch, staring at the white walls of my Troy apartment, wishing that I had had the patience to wait for a table at Lo Porto. I am very disappointed with my colleague who recommended this place. I am unsure I can trust him any longer and I am beginning to question our friendship. Whatever Verdile's once was, it certainly no longer is. This was my first AND last time to dine there. In a sentence, it has much more in common with mediocre New Jersey Diner food than anything approaching exceptional or even worthy southern Italian-American cuisine. There used to be a fantastic example of what Verdile pretends to be in Albany--Cavaleri's. Anyone who ever experienced its consistently superb meals knows of what I speak. The BEST Eggplant Parmesan I have ever been served in a restaurant, and made the right way. The only thing Verdile's shares with that is the huge portion of the entree. (However, the side of spaghetti was miniscule compared to the same at Cavaleri's). My dinner yesterday was Veal and Eggplant combined. The veal cutlets appeared to have arrived at Verdile's frozen and in a box. The eggplant was bitter, too thick, and both were made with breadcrumbs. NO self-respecting true Italian restaurant does that to eggplant! Thin slices, which have been thoroughly salted to have the bitter water removed, are dipped in egg and then flour, to be carefully fried in olive oil. Cavaleri's knew that. My Sicilian-American Mother knew that. 95% of restaurants don't. At 6 PM on a Sunday night, the restaurant was less than half filled. Fooled by talk in posted reviews of classy waiters in tuxes, I was WAY out of place in my dress slacks, long sleeve shirt and tie, and tweed sport coat (once owned by my dear Father). T-shirts for men was the rule. Those waiters did not seem to be enjoying their jobs; they were dressed in simple black shirts and slacks. The entire vibe was that of the 'Before' episode of restaurant makeovers. A long downhill slide was and still is in play, my friends. The $27 price for veal was low, admittedly. But the red sauce was ordinary, merely acceptable. The mozzarella wasn't. The spaghetti was not from Italy. The bread was sub-ordinary. I expect olive oil to be offered along with butter (which was in diner-approved plastic tubs). It was not. Service was efficient, but disinterested. Get in, get out, don't even attempt conversation. Look, it's perfectly fine for those with low expectations who are satisfied with mediocrity. I never am. This is my second review in the Capital District since arriving back one week ago. Those of you who care about serious dining should start to follow me. I will always give you the truth, whether it is praise (see my review for Larb, a Thai restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale), or scathingly honest, as is this one. Right now the only Italian restaurant in this area I can recommend highly is Capriccio's. DeFazio's is still quite good for Pizza. We had a five-star experience at Verdile's. Where to even begin? With the waiters wearing tuxes? The busser who offered to take a photo of my family and me without us even having to ask? The fact that the garlic bread was a very reasonably priced $3.50?! Or maybe I should specifically mention their red sauce: We asked for a side of it with our garlic bread and upon sampling, contrary to what we have read here, found that it in no way lacked a toothsome depth of flavor; in fact, just the opposite! And in case you are thinking it, I assure you, I am NOT a friend of the family, just an honest to God former resident up visiting his mom who wanted to give praise where it is due! I have experienced some of the finest cusine where I am from (New York City) and so, trust me, I know quality. The atmosphere, food, and service were all excellent. Lansingburgh is rich with history, although unfortunately it seems to have been on a slow decline. Yet, incredibly, Verdile's is still there, now over seventy-five years later---which, doesn't that just say it all? I was certainly glad that we made a reservation because the parking lot was completely full. The dining room has a vintage feel to it, you really get a sense of that history, which I love. And everything that we ordered was delicious. There were generous pours on the Bulleit Manhattans. My friend read on Yelp that the shrimp scampi was done well here and so he ordered that and loved it. I had the chicken parmesean with a side of homemade linguini---Mama Mia! Delicioso! We ended the night with a slice of carrot cake that was one of the best I've had. Our server was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I have nothing but praise for this place. While the service was impeccable, I would suggest the following: 1) serve your bread warm 2) the veal parmigiana is too much breading and the sauce tastes burnt 3) the shrimp cocktail should be fresh shrimp 4) while you could tell that the calamari was quality, it wasn't fried at a hot enough temperature rendering it mushy. I hastily reviewed Verdile's in 2017. Reassessment, in 2019 twenty trips later, love, love, love!! Overdue praise! So sorry it took so long! We love you guys with our heart and soul! We learned it was a different chef the night we first discovered Verdile's, which is uncommon. Seriously, if you want great, superb service combined with excellent food, please visit Verdile's. Food consistent week after week, service unmatched. Chicken Scarpiello, Chicken Parmesan, Veal Chop Pizziola, Eggplant rollatini appetizer, Minestra, Proscuitto w/ melon, clams in wine sauce, Braccioli special last evening, fabulous! Oh, the carrot cake, to die for! The bartender Joe knows his spirits!! Drinks, the best we ever had. Steve is a top notch waiter, no matter how busy, he treats you as if you are his only customer. There are quite a few more great hostesses and waiter/ waitresses we have not had opportunity to ask a name on because they are quite busy. Bottom line, we have never had a bad experience. We feel if a staff member is unsatisfactory, they do not stay. This has been our go to place the past two years, because customers matter. Our food is so thoroughly enjoyed, you are treated like family. You are never rushed, as a matter of fact, it is like grandmas, they invite you to stay, enjoy your evening, and you leave satisfied in good spirits. Several Pasta's and the sausage are made in house, the sauce is good nothing exceptional but solid. Wine by the glass is $5; bottles range from $20 to $35. We went here for the first time recently and had a pleasant experience. Service was fast, even though the dining room was almost fully occupied. Our waiter was professional and attentive, but also a tad dry. The bread they provide to start is soft with a nice chewy crust. We had the Salad For Two, which was very fresh and could actually be called Salad For Five. Hubby had the veal parm, and I had the chicken genovese with shrimp. Both were very good. I'm a sucker for tomato cream sauce, and I don't always find it on the menu at Italian restaurants. The portions were generous, and I was happy to find that my shrimp was completely de-tailed. Most of the dishes are in the $15 range, and we both left with doggie bags. One glass of wine, a soda, salad for two, and the two entrees came to just over $50 before tip. The decor was dated but not offensive; however I think they might attract more people if they did some updating. The dark wood paneling, floral carpets and funky metal-trimmed booths might not do it for everybody. Many of the patrons on this particular night have probably been dining at Verdile's since the place opened in the 1940's. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just an observation. We will be back to try something else, and I hope to add another star to my rating. read more

Gave this place a try because people swore it was the greatest Italian food I'd ever have. I'd say it's quite the opposite. The food is "ok" at best. Presentations are quite bland and the food is mediocre. I believe one of the only good points were the servers. They all dressed very formally and provided excellent service. But I must say the atmosphere is what killed it for me. I understand the 70's vibe, but it seemed so depressing... there just wasn't anything inviting about the place. We had moved our daughter into school and attempted to eat at 4 other places all closed including the one at our hotel. This was on a list given to us by the hotel. We called to see if they had any availability (and to be sure they were open) and were told to come in and they would accommodate us. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our waitress MJ was superb. This is the quintessential Italian American restaurant that has been in a family for a few generations. DELICIOUS FOOD REASONABLE PRICES FRIENDLY STAFF. My husband got Rigatoni with meat sauce and 2 meatballs. The meatballs are the size of tennis balls! Sauce was delicious, pasta was delicious and meatballs were delicious. I got a Veal special. Kind of a stew of veal, sausage, mushrooms, and peppers over fettuccine. Sausage and fettuccine are made in house. Veal was tender, sausage and fettuccine were delicious. Large portions, I had to talk 1/2 of mine home. Got dessert to go as we had no room for it! Carrot Cake and Tiramisu eaten later and were also delicious. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend when I moved to this area. I had high expectations, so maybe that's why I felt let down. Very interesting atmosphere. Every waiter is dressed in a full tuxedo, but that's about where the service stopped being impressive. It took our waiter nearly ten minutes to come to our table, and we were less than impressed with his service. We were brought a loaf of bread with some butter. The bread was very good, and I have to say, probably the best part of the meal for my wife and I. The menu was quite expensive, which would be ok if the food reflected those prices. I ordered the chicken parm, which though the portion was large, was extremely lacking in flavor. The red sauce was very plain and dull tasting. Salads were not included and were over priced for what you got. My wife ordered the chicken Marsala. Her dish contained five minuscule pieces of chicken with a very runny and bland Marsala sauce. She did not even want to bring home her leftovers. Halfway through dinner, the waiter asked if I would like another soda. Of course I said 'yes'. Once the bill arrived, we found that we had been charged full price for the second drink. How very unusual for a restaurant to not offer free refills on their fountain beverages! We heard the diners next to us complaining about the same issue. Overall, I've had worse meals, but was expecting much more out of this restaurant. We were seated by CHILDREN! Really. The two hostesses wore clothing Hannah Montana would deem immature. One of the kids led us to our table in the main dining room that possibly hasn't changed in forty years, designed in an East Coast version of fine-dining Googie, and it looks absolutely great! It's easy to imagine Rensselaer County power brokers in cheap suits sharing Manhattans with pearl-necklaced mistresses decked out in Troy's special interpretation of the phrase "Swingin' Sixties." Cuisine is pretty much two fisted Italian, no interesting surprises on the menu. Waiters are suited, attentive and droll. Pasta is hand made in the kitchen. A large plate of shrimp and scallops fettucine alfredo was placed in front of me. One mouthful: it was the best, the richest, fettucine I've ever had upstate. I begged Rox to try some, but she was preoccupied with her meal. After eating just a third of my portion, I considered how messy the table would look when my heart exploded, but I could not stop eating. Rox finally listened to me and swiped a forkful of noodles. The whites of her eyes were visible, brows raised. "My GOD! That's amazing! You're going to DIE if you eat all of that." Yeah, yeah. read more

I've been a customer here for over 20 years and I still love it. As long as it's not dirty, I don't really care about decor too much, I care about food quality, quantity and service. This place has those three in abundance! While dated in appearance, the place is clean and the food and service excellent. The chicken parm here is the best of anywhere in the area. Very thick (not pounded into a thin wafer of chicken) and overlapping both sides of the plate. Generous with the tasty sauce and I recommend the home made fettuccine as the side pasta. You can get many choices of pasta but the fettuccine they make on site is excellent and comes in a generous portion as well. Another dish I've had that is outstanding are the Spaghetti and large meatballs. In fact, for lunch, salad and meatballs (that I make a meatball sandwhich on Italian bread with) is my favorite lunch item here. My wife really enjoyed her fettuccini alfredo here and I sampled it from time to time and it is a great dish but I prefer their red pasta sauce. A tossed salad for one here really easily feeds two people with more left in the bowl. Several choices of dressing too and they are happy to put it on the side if your sharing and want different kinds. A salad for two, easily feeds a table of 5 no problem! As for service, the all male wait staff in tuxedos is very professional, attentive and accomodating. If there is something you want that you don't see on the menu, just ask and I've never seen someone told "no". They will accomodate you as much they possibly can. They have a bar area seperated from the main dining area and they often put out free pizzas and other appentizers for guest at the bar or those waiting out there for a table in the restaurant itself. Their white pizza I've had out there is awesome and goes quick so don't hesitate to grab some of you are out there when it's brought out! So overall, this isn't a touristy, trendy place trying to please a picky out of town crowd, it's a local favorite that's been here for generations and has earned the loyalty of the locals......just the kind of place I look for when I'm traveling. ;-) read more

OK, Here's the deal: If you feel like being transported to the mid-eighties or even the fifties then this is the place for you. It's also good if you are hell bent on becoming or remaining fat. The waitstaff wear tuxedos while serving you $16 dollar veal dishes with a heaping side of spaghetti w' red sauce. They bring out a half loaf of Bella Napolis Italian bread and some cold, individually wrapped pats of butter to start you off. The half-loaf is a meal unto itself. I've been here on numerous occasions since my mother is constantly getting gift cards that she pawns off on me every holiday season. The fried oysters are to be avoided if you like oysters and want this relationship to continue. The veal is fine and I always enjoy it but I know next to nothing about veal. I hear the eggplant parm is also good for you vegephiles. The pasta, even the pasta that purports to be homemade, is indecipherable from store bought pasta (at least to me). The meatballs are actually quite good. I wouldn't order any fish but I'm a snob so don't let me deter you. The cocktails are fine as well, in fact we generally soak up much of the gift cards balance with booze since the entrees are so incredibly cheap. I am now detecting a pattern in my writing about this restaurant. I seem to be overusing the word fine. It is "fine" but to the more nuanced reader fine should be the equivalent of someone raising both hands and shrugging so as not to insult an institution that has dutifully served their purpose at the time they were in need. That is what Verdiles has done for me and I am thankful. That being said: If you order an app and an entree and don't leave this place with a doggy bag then you aught to consider either joining a gym or having your stomach stapled. Oh and the waiters are always nice despite the clientele that must surely test their patience but the hostesses are usually north-troy, hood-rat bitches. I have to say, I was not overly impressed with Verdile's. It was pleasant enough, but I don't think I will be going back. Two friends and I arrived around 5:30pm on a Friday, just before a massive influx of diners showed up. I kid you not, that restaurant went from zero to PACKED within ten minutes! I suggest you show up very early for dinner if you plan on being seated right away. The hostess was very friendly and helped me find my friends when I arrived. As others have said, the decor is kind of dated. You don't notice it so much at night because of the dim lighting, but it's probably pretty ghastly in the daytime. My friends and I were seated towards the back of the restaurant near the waiter station/bathrooms. It was also right in the pathway between the bar on the other side of the restaurant and the dining room and bathrooms. I'm not sure why we were seated there when there was a whole dining room full of tables to choose from when we arrived, but it was highly distracting with all the foot traffic around us. As for the food, I found it a little lacking. It was good, but not as good as I'd hoped. And I'm not sure about these "huge portions" people keep talking about. I ordered the Chicken Genovese ($16) which was a rather small chicken breast and a couple shrimp, It was swimming in a ton of tomato cream sauce, though. It also came with a side of potato and vegetable or spaghetti. I got the spaghetti, and it was sadly very bland. I expected a pretty flavorful and robust tomato sauce from an Italian restaurant, but what I got tasted like it came out of a jar. One friend got that night's chicken special ($15), which again was good but rathersmall. Another friend got the hot lobster roll ($7), which looked somewhat like a crab cake on a hamburger roll and was only about the size of a small child's fist. So as far as huge portions go, I definitely didn't see them. The service was okay. Our waiter was nice, however, when it came to paying the check, he refused to split the check so that my friends and I could each pay with our own credit cards. I've never had a problem doing that at any other restaurant, and I'm not sure why he insisted that it was way too late to split the check. My friend ended up having to put the entire bill on her card. Despite the "eh" parts about this restaurant, I can say that it has a very homey atmosphere. I have a feeling many of the patrons are regulars that go at least once a week. Considering how packed it was while we were there, clearly a lot of people like Verdile's. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'm going to become a regular there anytime soon. read more

Haven't eaten here for a year, but everything is fabulous. Better than ever. Apps of fried oysters and calamari were scrumptious. Lobster ravioli outrageous. Broiled scallops melt in your mouth. Antipasto best I've ever had. read more

A classic Italian restaurant, Verdile's never disappoints. The food is excellent with very generous portions. The wait staff is always friendly. Despite this, the prices are very reasonable... It's by no means an expensive place. I've been going to Verdile's for years and I've never had a bad experience. The only negative thing is that they don't take reservations (except for New Years, Mothers' Day and Easter). The restaurant can really be packed during peak hours so be prepared to wait. The good thing is that you can wait in the bar area for a table and they usually have free appetizers out (like their white pizza). read more
