    Haddock almondine
    Caryna F.

This place is super cute. It's a place frequented by locals. It's old school Saratoga. Decorated with images from the local area. We had lunch here on a snowy Thursday, we started with their famous scallop shrimp bisque. The soup is award winning. We found it to be excellent. I ordered the haddock almondine and my daughter had the chicken parm. Both solid meals. The fish was nicely cooked. Loved the mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. The pasta sauce on the noodles was tasty, and it was a huge piece of chicken. Portions here are very ample. They offer many home made desserts. They stress that everything is homemade. M Service was friendly and experienced. Overall a great experience.

Not surprisingly, eleven years is a long time between visits. Many things change. The Ripe Tomato looks the same as it did when I last reviewed it. The service is still friendly. Maybe my standards have change somewhat. But whatever the reason I feel the need to lower my rating. On a rainy Sunday we arrived just after 6 pm. The main dining area was full, so we were seated in the addition with the metal roof. We, and several others who arrived after us, kept our coats on while we dined. I don't know if the baseboard heat was turned on, but I did feel warmer while I was eating. A very thickly cut and crispy crusted bread with garlic soaked olive oil was promptly served with glasses of tap water. I avoided eating all of the delicious bread so I wouldn't fill up before dinner arrived. Pints of Switchback Lager and Guinness ($6 each) continued to keep our thirst quenched until the arrival of the Crispy Cheese Curds ($13.95) for our appetizer. The seasoned and breaded cheese was served with sides of both a marinara and an excellent raspberry Melba sauce. Some of the bread that I saved earlier was also delicious dipped in the marinara. Overall, this was a very enjoyable start to dinner. My wife and I both had our attention grabbed by an entrée Special, Mediterranean Scampi ($26.95). She offered it to me and ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana ($19.95) which she had focused on before noticing the Scampi. The Scampi had a combination of sea scallops, jumbo shrimp, littleneck clams, and chopped ocean clams sauteed in a classic lemon scampi sauce with tomatoes, kalamata olives, and asparagus tips. All of this was served over linguine with some feta cheese. It was impressive to look at. Overall, it tasted good even though the clams were overcooked, but the flavor lacked a wow factor. My wife's eggplant lacked eggplant flavor. She said the eggplant was sliced so thin you only tasted the breading and the sauce. Having earlier enjoyed both the bread and cheese curds, she never even touched the side of linguine and sauce.

I haven't eaten here in years but I noticed their packed parking lot whenever I pass by. Naturally this piques my interest and I have a renewed desire to stop in for dinner. I was seated right away on a week night as I made an early dinner reservation. The establishment was quite busy and I am excited for dinner! The ambiance is quaint and rather homey. The place gives off an old fashioned vibe, as if you're eating at grandma's. Service was quite good on a busy night. Our server took our orders promptly and was very attentive throughout our meal. We had the Thai chili calamari appetizer special and the flavors were vibrant and addicting. The only slight drawback was that the battered coating was not crisp but still tasty. For our entrees we had eggplant parm with a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce, pork schnitzel with pickled beets and a side of crisp potato pancakes, seafood fra diavolo with mussels and shrimp and coquille st jacques with scallops and shrimp in a decadent cream sauce with mashed potatoes. Everything was very good, but the seafood fra diavolo and pork schnitzel was outstanding. The portions overall were generous. Some entrees on the menu offered an option to order a full size as well as a smaller portion size. It works out well for those with smaller appetites. Also it affords you room for a nice coffee and dessert after. I had to pass on dessert but I'll be sure to leave room next time. The cake offerings such as tiramisu, dark chocolate tiered layer cake, cheesecake etc all sounded dreamy. I left The Ripe Tomato feeling full, satisfied and very happy. I will definitely be joining others who appear to be their regulars. This establishment is a keeper and a must try.

We were driving home when we saw a lot of cars parked at this restaurant so we decided to give it a try. We were seated pretty fast. The restaurant building is apparently more than a 100 years old. Inside is a step back in time. Family owned for 22 or more years. Our server is attentive. The food was delicious. My seafood tagliatelle was tasty and it came out steaming hot. Husband had cedar salmon, he said it was good as well. Definitely recommended.

Located right on the corner of U.S. Route 9 and Malta Ave in Ballston Spa, the outside is pretty low-key. The parking lot was a bit dark, with most of the light coming from the building itself but don't let that fool you. You walk in and you're right at the bar , with plenty of seating barside or table, if that's your vibe. Not into sitting up front? No problem, there's additional seating in the back for a more relaxed feel. Service was a win. Our waiter was courteous, attentive, and accommodating without hovering. Now the food, the Gooouda Burger caught my eye immediately. I ordered it bunless, wrapped in buttery romaine lettuce, topped with crispy bacon and fried onions. Paired it with their straw fries (seriously good) and a cold beer to wash it down. First bite? Exactly what you want. Food to temp, everything was crisp not soggy, the burger was cooked perfectly, even at well done, which is not easy to pull off. I can only speak for the burger, but based on that alone: don't judge this place by its exterior. Give it a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised. On the other review which they gave one star, I don't know when this individual called in an order but must understand that you only have a certain amount of people working, trying to please their customers so you have to give them a break. A fairly short drive brought me to this little seafood shack; it is located in what seemed to be a kind of out of the way neighborhood. From the outside it looks charming, just a nice New England hang out; inside is even better with 2 compact dining rooms decorated with a nautical theme and a metal roof. When I arrived at about 6 on a Friday night the place was almost full with a couple of larger parties enjoying themselves. The menu is great for me since it is almost exclusively fish and seafood, with a good selection of preparations; even better there was another page of specials that are a bit more upscale. Since I was hungry and just wanted to keep it simple I choose the all you can eat fish fry off the menu. Considering how busy the restaurant was my meal came out in about 10 minutes. A nice basket with 4 fish fillets, fries and coleslaw. The highlight was clearly the fish with perfectly cooked moist white fish in a great batter with just enough spices to perk the fish up. The fish was so good that I actually finished the 4 fillets and then got 2 more. The fries were very thin cut and crispy. The coleslaw is what you would expect, good but nothing special. I was very impressed with Adirondack Seafood, the fish was excellent and the sides were good. The price was reasonable and the portions were generous. Service was good and the atmosphere is charming and fun. I would strongly recommend giving them a try. About the only downside is that outside of fish and seafood there are not a lot of choices; not an issue for a pescetarian like me but could be an issue for those who are serious carnivores.

This is a haute cuisine place that is masked by the casual dining atmosphere. Seriously: top notch chef, original recipes, a core dedication to quality seafood, paired with a fresh fish counter and some prepared food to go. We usually go for something special, but tonight I decided to get an old childhood standby, fried clams (the Boston Basket) and the fish burger sandwich. I did not expect either to be as transportive as they turned out to be. The fried clams were as delicately done as I've ever had: not crispy, but not too floppy, with excellent breading. And while I prefer my clams naked, we tried all three of the dipping sauces -- a remoulade, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. Now normally I loathe cocktail sauce and can take tartar sauce or leave it, so I figured we'd eat up the remoulade and ignore the other two. Still, I gave them little nibbles. Man! The cocktail sauce was like no other I've had, with a heavy hint of horseradish and a far fresher flavor than I've ever had. Then the tartar sauce -- genius! It had a delicate spicing, with capers providing a floral backdrop. That was only a preliminary, as the fish burger proved to be complex, with hints of multiple kinds of fish, and a fennel-based spicing. I ended up having that afterglow, as if I'd had a couple of cocktails and was sitting next to a fireplace, that is the hallmark of truly fine food at an advanced level. We also had the usual outstanding service, attentive without being pushy. I seriously think Hooked should consider splitting into two restaurants: one where the ambiance is upgraded to match the high caliber of the food, and another cheaper one that is strictly fast casual and takeout, and they'd more than double the business. There is a restaurant back where we come from in California, Turtle Bay, that did this with fine dining on one side and the quick, simple, and affordable food on the other side, with a big shared kitchen between them but with completely separate ambiances. That way I could come back more frequently, and still have the original Hooked for special occasions!

It had good flavor under that burn, and the chicken was close to not being juicy, almost dry. The place is clean, and if not for the location, I would sit at the bar and have the raw bar! We had 6pm reservations for a party of four, arrived about ten minutes early and were seated immediately. The other couple in our party had previously been here and were curious if what they ordered then would be on the menu again. Apparently, the menu is updated weekly. Starting out with cocktails, I know everyone was happy with what they were served. I certainly enjoyed my pint of Coffee Stout, and my wife was pleased with the lavender non-alcoholic cocktail they concocted for her. Because the servings being delivered to other tables appeared to be quite large, we decided to pass on appetizers, in spite of some of the apps sounding rather unique, e.g., Crispy Deviled Eggs, Open Faced Fried Pork Wantons, and Fried Carbonara. My wife was tossed between a Beet Salad with Scallops and the Pistachio Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass. At our server's recommendation she chose the Sea Bass. It was served with corn puree, confit potatoes (which my wife especially enjoyed), and roasted tomatoes. I'll get to enjoy the leftovers. I was trying to make up my mind between the Duck Pot Pie and the Chestnut Mushroom & Boursin Stuffed Tomahawk Pork Chop when our sever alerted us that there were only two servings left of the Pork Chop. I promptly claimed one of them! I am so glad I did. It was an amazingly delicious and well prepared dish. The pork had a slight pinkish color, just as I like it, the meat was so tender and flavorful, the stuffing had a crisped surface from the oven or salamander, everything was wrapped in tasty pancetta, the smashed potatoes were creamy and delicious, a white wine truffle sauce added another level of flavor, and even the carrot spears had the right level of firmness. I can affirm that my leftovers were equally enjoyable. We were not as lucky in having advance notice of the limited availability of a limoncello pie dessert, so my wife and I shared a slice of Banana Cookie Dough Pie. OMG! That was sooooo delicious. It was light, creamy, and not overly sweet. A real treat with the good coffee they serve. That pie along with something from their Lighter Menu, like a burger, would send you home in ecstasy without putting much of a dent in your wallet. Our bill for the party of four having one round of drinks, entrees, and desserts was about $250. Taking the whole dining experience into account, it was a very fair value. But wait! I have more to share with you. On Saturday nights live entertainment is provided by an excellent keyboard player adding to the inviting dinner experience and atmosphere. Great live, unobtrusive, background music is always a plus at dinner. Got a request? Art Mozeik will likely oblige. Even if you'd like to hear a song on an accordion instead of his keyboard. Find your way to Broadalbin, N.Y. for dinner. You won't be disappointed.

We tried Buona Sera for dinner after our daughters rowed in the Saratoga Invitational. Sunday…read moreevening; called for a reservation, but not necessary. Got seated right away in the "Lake Room" and got served right away. The Lake Room has a nice view over Saratoga Lake, and the ambiance was good for family dinner, except for a couple of loud tables that made it hard to hear everyone. I had a bourbon Manhattan that was perfect - not so dry that it tasted like a glass of bourbon and not so much vermouth as to make it too sweet - and really smoothed off the afternoon - then a glass of St Francis Cabernet to go with dinner. Appetizers were pan-fried mozzarella and the Shrimp Limoncello. The mozzarella was "Made with Our Fresh Homemade Mozzarella, and Breadcrumbs, Served over Marinara." Light, slight breading and fried just enough with a perfectly sweet complementary red sauce. The Shrimp Limoncello was "Three U-10 Shrimp Sauteed with Roasted Garlic, Roasted Heirloom Tomatoes and Limoncello, Served with Grilled Bread." Shrimp were cooked just right, not overcooked, as happens many times with shrimp, and the tomatoes and bread were complementary and tasty, but the limoncello was a little too much lemon, not enough cello. (a little more tart than we liked) 2 entrees were the pan seared salmon over risotto with a request to undercook the salmon somewhat, which they honored, and it made the salmon very moist and tasty. The Roasted Garlic and Basil risotto was excellent - rice not overcooked, perfect with a deep warm roasted garlic flavor. My Eggplant Parmesan was prepared the old fashioned way with thinly sliced eggplant properly drained and sweet with an ultra thin breading fried just right with a delicious marinara sauce and plenty of mozzarella, served over house-made spaghetti cooked al dente. Ample enough to have half for lunch the next day. Oh, and I had a side order of broccoli rabe - slightly bitter, as it should be, with ample garlic flavor cooked perfectly. Excellent. The fourth entree was Shrimp Aglio E Olio - "Sauteed shrimp, broccoli rabe, roasted tomatoes, in a garlic and olive oil sauce. Served over spaghetti." Once again, large fresh (not meaning not previously frozen, just clearly not old) meaty shrimp cooked perfectly - still moist with some crunch with a wonderful pungent garlic sauce over that perfectly al dente spaghetti. My daughter loved it. Also enough for lunch the next day. Desserts were homemade tiramisu and lemon ricotta cake with raspberry sauce and whipped cream. Tiramisu was classic and delicious. Lemon cake was a little dry but tangy and tasty, especially with the full-flavored raspberry sauce. We only get to Saratoga in the spring and fall for the rowing races, but this will be our go-to place for post-regatta dinner any time we're around. Very very good. Not cheap, but one doesn't mind when it's well worth the price.
