French Onion au Gratin with a side of fries
    Corie Y.

Stopped into McGreivey's today for a quick lunch while passing through Waterford. I sat in the bar area and the bartender was super friendly and provided great service. I ordered French onion soup, French fries and an IPA. As soon as my spoon broke through the glorious layer of cheese in the soup, I could smell how good it was going to be. The broth had deep and complex flavors, the cheese was thick and flavorful, it was a little heavy on the crouton for my preference but it was a great crock of soup. And a good size bowl too! Paired with the perfect ultra crispy house cut fries, it was the perfect easy lunch. Great little bar to stop in for a quick lunch. This was my first visit but I would defintely come back if I was in the area.

    Fish & chips?

Came into town to visit my mom and couldn't wait to come here for the fish and chips. They are the best! Nice portion. We also got the artichoke dip with chips. So yummy! I forgot to take a picture. Service is friendly and nice. Great little pub but they do have a large dining area off the bar also. I also saw seating outside in the back patio for when it's nice. Give them a try! Definitely worth the trip.

Waterford should be proud of McGreivy's. I suggest going on Friday for the Fish Tacos. You won't be disappointed.

This is a true locals joint but tourists won't cause a cinematic music halt. The waitress was excellent, providing helpful suggestions. I got the Spindle City Cutlet based on its name and its appearance in the Yelp summary, whereas actual Yelpers turned in more votes for spicy rigatoni. I don't know the formal definition of "pan sauce" but based on Smith's I reckon it's like gravy, only better. Smith's is a long way from JC but someday I hope to make it back in better weather for waterfall viewing. I do hope the limited-time Pierogi Bun Smashburger has a shorter interval between appearances than the McRib.

He knew every item on the menu from personal experience because he has tried everything. He was able to make great suggestions for our meal. I got the hibiscus lemonade for my drink from the mocktail menu, which was stupendous. I did something I never do and ordered the chicken Parm off this menu. And to my great surprise, I was not disappointed! They have a very good chicken Parm! I got the house salad, and that was also good. And our waiter suggested the lemon blueberry cake for dessert which was also great and so dense and filling that it ended up being breakfast the next day as well with a lovely cup of tea. This was a wonderful experience and I will be back.

It was darkly lit inside (with pinkish/red lights no less); it was extremely loud to the point that I had trouble understanding what my wife was saying (which might not be the background music!); and the prices were expensive. The entire night they played 1980s New-wave British music which I don't mind, but had it been something I detest I would have lost my mind. We were seated at a tiny table with a small candle which provided some actual heat on the cold winter night. Our server was extremely helpful and though he didn't have all the answers he did offer to go and find out. They have a long menu but it doesn't have a lot of food options on it, with most of the pages devoted to alcohol. They had only one dessert option when we were there. My wife and I both ordered the Hanger Steak with fries, mushroom sauce, and green salad (about $40 each). Hanger steak is my favorite cut and hard to find so I jumped on it. Food came out in about 25 minutes, which is amazing considering how small their kitchen is. The steak was cooked perfectly (they didn't ask how we wanted it), smothered in a lovely mushroom sauce, and covered an ample portion of crispy homemade fries which were so good I would have thought them bagged frozen items. Even the basic salad which was just various types of lettuce was great. They aren't cheap, but they are focusing on "farm to table" and that means quality food at commensurate (fair?) prices. Burgers and chicken sandwiches are $15, so if you want something lighter but still tasty you can go that route. Speaking of light, if you go into the bathroom on the right you will find a cold, dark, tiny room lit solely by a PINK bulb. It feels like being on a spaceship (as if I know what that is like), and after when you leave seeing the main light in the restaurant is very jarring. It was a fun experience but not inexpensive and not one that checks the boxes that I look for in a restaurant. Dark, loud, and cramped might be hip for the young or "save the earth" crowd, but I am too old to give up creature comforts for such things. The food, though expensive, was absolutely outstanding in every way though and I won't forget that steak for a long time.

Classic American fare that leans toward fine dining, but still feels casual. The wooden bar was a great place to enjoy some drinks and a meal. The bartenders were amazing! I loved chatting with Andrew and Talia. I started with the cocktail list, they have a great selection of standard house cocktails and seasonal specials. I selected the seasonal Negroni to start and it was great. I opted to try the lobster chowder which was delicious and had a whole claw in it! It was a treat and I would definitely order this again. For dinner of course I got the prime rib which was a special. The portion was huge! And perfectly cooked. The Au jus and the horseradish cream were perfect sides for the beef. The sides were very standard but went well with the star of the show. It is definitely worth checking this place out for dinner, great specials and great food, amazing service in a really old school ambiance.

And, I usually only put ketchup on hot dogs (no onions, no mustard, no relish). I like how places have special meat sauce but I usually avoid it because of the onions. HDC is no exception. After having lived in Clifton Park where there was a HDC in the mall food court, I assumed it was just a ho-hum place. It still might be, but my late night sojourn has caused me to rethink what I thought I knew all about HDC. But, my wife and I had already eaten dinner and were on the way back from getting ice cream and we thought we might stop in to get one or two for the road. We were the only customers and the place was being cleaned when we arrived, so it was spotless (or as spotless as a hot dog restaurant will ever be). I ordered two mini hot dogs with ketchup and cheese, my wife had them with sauce and mustard. They were pretty good. I think the ketchup was too sweet and next time I will ask for less. Or, perhaps it is Heinz (I prefer Hunts which tastes less sugary to me). The cheese sauce was a nice twist on the regular hot dog and I loved it. Two bites each and they were gone! I will be back!
