Ate here with the family, and Testo's is probably one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever eaten at. I ordered a large 22-inch pizza, and it was easily one of the best pizzas I've had. From the crust to the sauce and toppings, everything was excellent. They make their meatballs fresh in-house, and they were outstanding. Our table also ordered several pasta dishes, including ziti, lasagna, and spaghetti, and everything tasted incredibly fresh and homemade. You can really tell they take pride in their food and aren't just serving typical chain-restaurant Italian food. The service was very good as well. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and helpful with the menu. The atmosphere inside had that classic, old-school Italian restaurant feel--comfortable, welcoming, and authentic. It felt like the kind of family Italian restaurant that knows exactly what it's doing. Coming from California, we just don't have many Italian restaurants like this back home. Great homemade Italian food, generous portions, good service, and very reasonable prices. If you're in the Troy area and want authentic, homemade Italian food, Testo's is definitely worth a visit. First visit will definitely not be the last. This place is the real deal. Plenty of parking, including handicapped spaces. Clean, actually spotless front area. Immediate attention from a hostess. Waitress at the table within minutes, pleasant, experienced, just absolutely professional while at the same time being friendly and welcoming. The service alone is worth the whole 5 stars, so how do I rate the food? :) We ordered lasagna, I got the meat, my wife got meatless. Salad on the table minutes after we ordered. Nice salad, nothing fancy, good variety, lots of black olives, some sort of pickled pepper, decent croutons. Meals came within 10 minutes, piping hot, and just from looking I knew I was in for a treat. There was plenty of sauce, and not the thin watery stuff that seems to be called sauce lately. Rich, thick, had a great texture to it, not a bit of oiliness, and there was no orange water seeping out from under the food. You could actually taste tomato, and the spices, rather than just some slightly acidic red taste. Lasagna was a huge portion, actually a double in my mind. I ate until I was stuffed, and had enough left over to do that again the next day. There was sufficient cheese, and the meat was really tasty on its own, nicely seasoned. There is a great selection of deserts, and these days, premium cheesecake at $7.50 is a bargain. They offer tiramisu, which I love, but since I wanted to sleep that night I passed (the caffeine does a number on me now that I am old). I noticed some other reviews whining about pricing. Very hard for people to understand that restaurants are businesses, and they need to charge enough to pay staff, rent, overhead, food, and all the myriad of charges that small businesses have, plus produce enough profit so the owner decides the whole thing is worth the hassle. You want cheap food served? No problem, there are plenty of chain outfits around; don't complain when a premium restaurant charges enough to stay in business. Our two meals were a tad under $44 bucks, including tax. Given the absolute top quality of the food, and the size of the portions, in my mind, the dishes would have supported a extra $5 per. Testo's is for sale, and I hope that if it does sell the new owners respect what they bought and keep the tradition of truly superb food at reasonable prices going. I am amazed that after 40 some years in the area, and having driven by the place on business numerous times, that this is the first time I ate there. North Troy (Lansingburgh) stalwart Testo's is still there and still pitting out great Italian food and Pizza. 30 years ago I live close by- walking distance- and this was my pizza go to. Came back for a visit and needed to stop by for a sub and t was awesome. I inhaled my sandwich and the delicious pickle and it made me happy. I have only dined in one time, but this restaurant is a favorite of our daughter. She often orders takeout from here for family gatherings. She mixes up where she orders from. The meatballs always come from Testo's. Their meatballs are outstanding, and this compliment comes from a cook of Italian heritage. The meatballs are a soft/tender texture and full of flavor. They have perfected just the right amount of bread crumbs and grated cheese to use for a classic Italian meatball. I make mine with a mix of equal parts of ground beef, pork, and veal. I think they do as well. The meatballs come in a pan with a generous amount of their well made marinara sauce. The sauce is perfect to dip a piece of Italian bread into and enjoy. Extra sauce can be saved with a few meatballs for another pasta dinner. read more

Testo's Restaurant is a Troy landmark! The Testo family serves classic Southern Italian dishes. My husband always orders the veal parm. It is his favorite dish and has ordered it many, many times. It is consistently excellent. He ordered it tonight. It is a generous portion and the veal is so tender it melts in your mouth. Tonight I ordered the meat lasagna. It too is a generous portion(I brought half home with me). The lasagna has layers of noodles, meat, ricotta and mozzarella in their legendary sauce. I truly appreciate that they always supply their meals with lots of sauce. Each meal was accompanied by a hearty salad and freshly made Italian bread. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food is absolutely delicious. Everybody is polite and listens to where I ask them to deliver since I live in a place that could be confusing if you don't listen. My only negative and it's kind of opposite. I'm a real negative. I ask for just a little bit of spaghetti on the side I'm supposed to have a bunch. I don't want a bunch. They still put a bunch of spaghetti. To me it's just a waste because I can't eat much and they bothered me. They didn't listen to my request two times. But still overall I gave five stars. read more

My husband got the pizza and I ordered the Ziti Alfredo. Amazing salad came with the ziti...I'm still not sure what was in it, but the flavors were so good. My husbands pizza was amazing too. I just took one bite, but the layer of flavors was unbelievable. Waitress was so sweet and attentive. Ambiance was a hole in the wall...which we love. Clean and cosy. The only complaint was the parent letting their kid watch a Disney movie loudly at the table next to us. Why do people think that is okay? I wish management would step up to the rude patron for the sake other patrons. We ate and ate and still took 1/2 home as leftovers. Waitress packed us extra bread. Worth the money!! I've gone to Testo's for years. Something changed. I will never go back and I am only five minutes away. Seems like there're cutting corners but not price. I ordered penne with oil and garlic and what was supposed to be a cut up chicken breast. Disgusting. In no way was that a chicken breast. I've gotten it many times so immediately could tell the difference. It was a cut up processed chicken patty which is not chicken breast. Not to mention the oil and garlic was watery. If you keep substituting crap for what used to be real quality food you weren't be around much longer. Customers are not dumb. Especially those that have gone to Testo's for many years. Did take out on August 14, 2025 because they charge more for dining in. Obviously customers are footing the bill for servers and not Testo's. The only reason I didn't rate it a zero is because one was the lowest number and also ordered ravioli and he said it was just passable but nothing great. This is supposed to be an Italian restaurant who used to serve quality food with reasonable prices. No more. Do yourself a favor and go to Lanni's, Verdiles or Ripe Tomato if you want quality Italian food. read more

I have been going to and ordering from Testo's for years. Went there this week with my adult grandkids one of them ordered Chicken Parm. She couldn't eat all of it, so we brought it home. She left for college and didn't eat it so I started eating it. The chicken was a patty like the ones you get a McDonalds looked like the chicken in a nugget. $23 for 2 frozen chicken patties with a slab of mozzarella cheese, sauce and some ziti. That's not what I would expect from an Italian Restaurant. The other thing that bothered me is the up charge. To take out the cost was $19.50. I had eggplant and veal parm. It was good but the up charge was $7.00 more than take out, $21 take out, $28 in the restaurant. I am very disappointed!!!!! I will not be returning. read more

This review is a little dated. I grew up in Troy and visited this restaurant frequently with my family. It was my favorite as a kid, in the early 1980s. Based on the pictures and comments, nothing has changed. The food still looks phenomenal and the staff amazing. I bought their marinara at Bella Napoli and really enjoyed it so I decided we really needed to try this place. Mind you, this was a few weeks ago. But I ordered takeout, a large cheese pizza, an extra side of meatballs, and another jar of that great sauce. My favorite Italian restaurant in all of the Capital District. I have been to just about every Italian restaurant in upstate New York. This is my favorite. It's not a fancy place. It is a traditional Italian restaurant. Definitely old school. If you are looking for modern decor and small plates, this is not the place for you. I have had most of the items on the menu, and every one of them has been fantastic. Every Italian restaurant has slightly different sauces, and I happen to like the sauces at Testo's. The portions are good, the prices are fair. Without exaggeration, the service has always been excellent. The people working there all maintain an even keel. They don't get excited or angry when it gets busy. Pick up orders are handled professionally. They are very organized. I can't say enough good things about Testo's. This little gem is tucked away in Troy's Lansingburgh neighborhood. Testo's is a a hole in the wall establishment, but a tad nicer. I'd say this establishment is one of my favorite in that category in the whole Capital District. Unfortunately, this business is about 20-25 minutes from where I lived, so I never got here as much as I would have liked. This joint has been around for 40 something years and it's well loved by the people in the neighborhood. Be careful on Saturday, Testo's gets the after church crowd and this place gets packed. I'd usually try to come around 4 PM while it's still a little slow. The menu is somewhat similar to Watervliet's Purple Pub, but more of an emphasis on Italian options. The baked ziti at both places is nearly identical! I love the sauce here, it's very simple and tasty. If you are looking for something very flavorful, you might enjoy other restaurants more. I'm sitting here in South Florida dreaming of the baked ziti from here though. OMG, it is soooo good! I love that they don't put any ricotta in it, but it's topped with lots of delicious mozzarella cheese. While I was home, I came in during the day when they were running the lunch specials. There were many generous portions for $7-8 available midweek from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Such a good value! Neighborhood Italian restaurants in old brick buildings are found all over New York. The ones that stand the test of time are truly special. They don't change much. They just do it right from the get go. Testo's would certainly fall in to that category. With a large group of friends I was able to try many appetizers and the famous pizza. We started our meal with: Hot Wings, Parmesan Garlic Wings, Hot/Parmesan Garlic Wings, Mozarella Sticks, Stuffed Bread, Eggplant Rolitini, and Two sides of Meatballs. The wings were fantastic. Fat and Juicy served with a huge container of Blue Cheese. BC was really good! We got creative with the combo wings and they weren't cooked as well as the first batch but the sauce combo was awesome. The Meatballs were really fantastic as was the marinara. You can see why they say they are a must for every table. Everything else mentioned above was OK. I liked all of them but not enough to order again. To finish we ordered two pies. Ham, Bacon and Hot Peppers and Broccoli, Ricotta, Garlic. Very thick crust. Substantial slices. Both pizzas were enjoyable. It is very clear why Testo's has remained popular for so many years. It really is a gem tucked away in the recesses of this historic city. read more

Testo's Restaurant is a longtime (1976) institution in the Burgh, tucked away in a mostly residential neighborhood at the corner of 4th Avenue and 124th Street, offstreet parking in the back. Testo's is famous for their sauce which is sold by the jar at the restaurant and at local supermarkets. Their sauce ROCKS, which is hearty and very tasty, yet not too filling. Testo's serves up traditional family Italian dishes and pizza at reasonable prices, most prices the $7-$15 range. The generous portions seved are a good value for the money. Lunch and daily specials are offered here and dinners come with tossed salad and bread. I enjoy dipping the bread into the sauce and cleaning off the dish. My granny raves about Testo's and comes here each month with her old lady friends for lunch after shopping. The dining room can get busy and there may be a wait for a table. I prefer using takeout counter area in the front of the restaurant to order pasta dinners, pasta fagioli, and meatball subs. Be sure to try the Lasagna and Chicken Parm dinners! The takeout service is efficient. Also, my mom's coworkers sometimes order pizza from Testo's after their shift and on a few occasions I've enjoyed some leftover pizza slices brought home. Yum! We found this place years ago when coming to Saratoga for the races and would look forward to a good meal each year. Ate here today for our first visit since Covid shut down inside dining. I ordered chicken parm and my wife got pasta Alfredo with chicken and broccoli. When my plate came out and I saw two circular breaded things next to the spaghetti, I knew I was in trouble. They are now serving you breaded chicken patties (probably frozen) like you'd get on a Burger King chicken sandwich. The chicken in the Alfred dish was one of these patties chopped up. I am more sad for this place than angry. I'm guessing the veal, meatballs and pizza may still be good but do not order chicken. I would give this place zero stars if I could. The pizza was okay--good if you want it super greasy. It was cooked well, but the pieces were massive. The fries were no where near crispy (which we asked for)---they looked like they were dropped into a fryer for 5 seconds. Both of those issues were not a deal-breaker, however. That food was salvageable--grease can be removed, pieces can be cut smaller, and even the fries weren't terrible once we reheated them in the toaster oven (though still no where near crispy). The issue is the eggplant rollatini---or should I say HAM and eggplant rollatini. I am a VEGETARIAN. Absolutely NO WHERE on the menu does it say that this dish has MEAT in it. Eggplant rollatini does not have meat in it regularly---that's the point! I have not eaten meat in nearly 20 years. Thank you for ruining that for me by not properly describing your dishes on your menu. IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN, DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!!!! read more

I love Testo's. Period. I grew up in Troy, but I don't find myself in the Testo's neighborhood often these days. When I do, I always stop there. It never fails to deliver a delicious meal. Having some work to do, I ordered takeout for delivery. I avoid carbs in general, so I decided to go for the meatball parmigiana dinner with mushrooms instead of pasta. Yes, I know meatballs have bread, this was a rare occasion. I also ordered a side of two sausages. The food came at the expected time and was ridiculously cheap, 16 dollars and change, 20 with tip. The delivery guy was nice. When I opened up the bag, I immediately was transported to my childhood. Testo's holds huge nostalgia for me. Back in the days when eating out was only reserved for special occasions, even pizza, I always wanted to go to Testo's. It was the go-to place for everyone. After school functions, birthday parties, a lucky Friday night when mom didn't want to cook, we got Testo's. What a relief from the usual fare of my 1970's youth, I'm sure some of you can relate. Later on, in my teens, I actually worked at Testo's for probably under a year. I retained two distinct memories from that period: 1. I was scared to death of old Mrs. Testo 2. The place was so clean you could eat off the floor (something I never experienced again working in any other restaurant) Testo's has old school food and great slow cooked meat sauce. The meatballs are also of the traditional veal, pork, and beef combination (I am pretty sure), and the sausage has always been delicious. I think they used to be supplied by local Geno's back in the day, but don't quote me on that. The meatballs were just as I remember, light and mild, never tough, nice flavor. They were smothered in regular whole milk mozz that had a browned top, yum. The mushrooms are canned, yep, and in this dish, I don't care. The sausages were also delicious. If not Geno's, they still have the same consistency and flavor, something I am very particular about. Both were served with enough sauce to mop up with the sliced Bella Napoli bread. If I wasn't off the carbs, I would have been all over that, but luckily, I have a breakfast oriented husband and the bread makes amazing toast. All my suffering has made a difference of 25 pounds, for all the haters. The entrees are accompanied with your grandma salad, basically Iceberg and a few additions, but again, the Testo's Italian dressing is simple and yummy. It served to break up my meat fest with a little acidity. If you haven't been to Testo's, go there. Every town has a local favorite. I live in Schenectady county now, so I love Perecca's, but when I'm in Troy, it's Testo's. Just as an aside, it's also our absolute favorite pizza in the CR. We both have eaten pizza everywhere, including Italy. Again, it's a grandma pizza, but the best. Do not get the fried fish dinner. Quality of fish was horrible, and it was mushy and wet even though it was deep fried. It even smelled bad. Took one bite and threw the meal away. Small portion on the fish. Fries were plentiful, but terrible. The chicken parm with spaghetti was mediocre. Large portion, but didn't eat much of it as the meat wasn't good. We have been wanting to try out Testo's for a while...on Friday and the weekend, forget it without a reservation. We went on a Thursday, it was very easy to accomplish our mission this time. You go inside, it is just a classic 1990's Goodfellas restaurant scene, nothing fancy, in my opinion, that usually means it is old school and good food. We ordered some garlic parmesan wings, extra crispy for our appetizer. We ordered a few drafts, all was great. The management seems to take great care in hiring staff- they are very on task. Our waitress did not miss a beat. After our apps we received a nice basket of what I thought was Bella Napoli bread and a very flavorful, fabulous salad. I ordered a chicken parmigiana and requested it to be pounded extra thin- unfortunately, that could not be done which was disappointing. My understanding was they were already prepared. Alternatively, I ordered the pasta fagioli- which was very different from what I usually am accustomed to, yet, that is good. No two Italian restaurants ever cook the same, it is all by hand. I fried it for lunch the next day, it was delicious. BF ordered Combo Italiano: A selection of Testo's most popular dishes. Lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, and a meatball. He also really enjoyed it. Overall pleasurable experience. The best part, the bill was the lowest bill we have had in years! Very reasonable prices.
