I'm so excited that we finally got to have dinner at DC Vegan. From start to finish, everything was wonderful. My husband and I really enjoyed our cocktails, he had the WWND, which was like a spiced old fashion, complete with charred cinnamon stick and cardamom pod as a garnish and I enjoyed a delicious Amaretto sour (amaretto, rye, lemon, ginger tea syrup- delicious!). Our appetizers were very tasty, but our favorite was an innovative spin on fried calamari- made with mushrooms and served with marinara. We actually ate a lot of appetizers, so we wrapped up with Caesar salads (my husband recommends the chicken Caesar) accompanied by a rosé and an IPA. We also took home some Italian cookies for later and a lot of vegan cheese. They even have vegan pimiento cheese! The ambiance was really cute and our server, Jonathan was fantastic. He was attentive and knew the menu well. We even met the owners and their cute dog, Lentil, on our way out. If you are vegan you will love this place, but even if you aren't vegan, give it a try. This place is phenomenal. I dined here twice on a short 3-day trip to DC. My first meal was in the upstairs deli. I had the meatball bowl and a cannoli. Burgers are easy to find but sandwiches are not yet common for a plant-based diet. This means going to delis and asking them to hold off on the meat and cheese. DC Vegan solves the problem of finding a local vegan deli in a rather stylish manner. The bread had the right texture for a sandwich and makes me wish they sold their bread separetely! The 'mozzarella' tasted so authentic that you could dispense with the quotes that indicate it's plantlike origins. Cannolis are worth mentioning here since these were the right amount of sweet and definitely taste better than most of the basic cannolis out there. read more

I wanted to give this place 5 stars, but this review is specifically about the New Years Eve dinner experience at the Botanical Bar and while I enjoyed myself there are some things that could be improved. I have been wanting to try this place since they first opened, but had not had the opportunity. When our NYE plans shifted, I booked one of the bar seatings for their prix fixe dinner. Staff was lovely and friendly, however they seemed a bit overbooked and inattentive and rushed. We had cutlery brought out twice, but then when they were supposed to bring us spoons, they never returned. Drinks were left empty. My sparkling water was repeatedly refilled with still water. The welcome glass of sparkling wine served with the meal was warm as the open bottle was left out on the bar counter without ice. This is not where the temperature issues ended. Every dish was brought out rather tepid. The garlic knots were warm, but the marinara was not. The salad was a lot of arugula, and little else. The gnocchi was lukewarm. The flavours were there, and I kept commenting to my husband how good it would be if it wasn't sitting out to grow cold. By the time the Chunk filet was brought out, the potatoes and broccolini were cold. Not warm, not tepid, cold. The steak was a bit off in temperature, as well. I cannot say whether dessert was served well, because they ran out of dessert before we were served ours. We were offered cheesecake as a substitute which I declined for a complimentary cocktail. For a $85 meal, it was disappointing that nothing arrived at an optimal temperature. My advice is for future prix fixe dinners, that they reduce the seating and not over extend themselves. This dinner would have been perfect had things been just a little better. The atmosphere, the staff, the owners, everyone was really lovely overall, but the meal itself needed a little more attention and care to ensure that they weren't serving cold dishes. I look forward to returning again to try their full menu, but for NYE this just needed more. read more

BEWARE!!! Experienced what I consider fraudulent activity at DC Vegan. Used my credit card to make a purchase at the deli and a tip was added without my knowledge or permission. I called to report it and although I have an electronic receipt by email...and the manager on duty could see the transaction on their system - he said that he is new and can't do anything about it. Bottom line is that a tip was added without my permission and that is illegal and fraudulent. Clearly it is either a policy to steal from customers or they have dishonest people working there. Either way I will not be back! UPDATE: I received an email from DC Vegan and they have refunded the amount added for tip. I appreciate the turnaround in customer service. read more

D.C. Vegan provided a high-quality menu for my daughter's wedding reception in Maryland that was being planned from across the county. The food was excellent but, more importantly, the serving staff were personable and attentive through the evening--they really seemed to enjoy their jobs. Mike and Leah put together a wide variety of vegan options from delicious focaccia to passed appetizers to yummy cannoli! They offered valuable input to balance out the menu. Despite the long-distance planning, everything went extremely smooth, and the reception was flawless from start to finish. I appreciated the cards describing the buffet items and the attention to restocking as favorite foods were consumed. My favorite was the mac and cheese appetizers. Not directly food related, but I believe important to note on the level of character: On the day of the wedding, Mike arrived in a casual work outfit to set up tables and a prep tent. I thought nothing of it -- the guy's doing heavy lifting, cooking, had a commute from DC, right? I was perfectly fine with his outfit until I saw that he changed into a button down shirt and khakis when he introduced himself to the bride. We ordered meatball subs, cauliflower wings, potato skins, and a side of fries. Every thing was incredible. Ordered dinner to go, and it arrived on time, and warm! I had a hard time choosing from the online menu... so many things sounded good, and looked even better. I settled on the Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich, and was so happy I did. The eggplant was mixed with sauce (not overwhelmed by too much tomato sauce), "cheese" and spices, and stuffed into a roll with just the right amount of crisp in the crust. I added a side salad which had some veggies and a delicious Italian dressing. I shared a few of my friend's Italiano Fries ... yummy! Decadent!! The menu looks really promising, even thought expensive. But then the actual food? Hodgepodge and not even that great. It's cheap quality meal for expensive prices and I was so disappointed. The staff and the space was really nice though. If I were to go again? I would only get the desserts. They seemed nice enough. My daughter took me to DC Vegan for a birthday treat and what a treat it was . I have to put this in my index of amazing foodie finds. The food was incredible - the meaty lasagna and the tender eggplant rollatini competed with the crispy king mushroom calamari and the tangy buffalo cauliflower wings for my favorite dish of the night . The mocktails were creative ( mango and tumeric, aloe juice and cucumber with seed lip nonalcoholic spirits , the service was prompt , the waitstaff busy yet warm , friendly and efficient .
