When available, I take a double decker big bus tour of every city I visit to get a general layout of the land and some history of the buildings and architecture that encompass it. The first couple tour guides were just average, however we were sitting closer to the back and it was hard to hear them as well. We decided to hop off for a while, get lunch, and hope for a shift change. Dion Blackhall was the tour guide when we hopped back on the bus and he completely changed our DC Trails experience! We bought tickets for the DC Trails hop on hop off bus while traveling in DC. It was a very convenient and easy was to see the sights and stop at places we wanted to. The buses are comfortable, and 3 out of 4 tour guides were both knowledgeable, and spoke clearly. Their double-decker air conditioned buses are great for getting the guided tour on sunny days. The open-top buses are of course perfect for kids, and an all-round great view, while getting your hair blown around. Couple of issues that travelers should be aware of- they don't call out the time when you deboard. You have to check your watch at every stop so you know when to expect the next bus, otherwise you might be waiting up to 30 minutes. There is no published schedule. In some areas, like the Lincoln Memorial, there is no clear marking of where the stop is. You get dropped off in one spot, picked up around the corner. No DC Trails sign on either. All this not withstanding, the service was what we needed, and with the Groupon we used, also at a price that made sense. read more

I don't get to travel much, so when I get a rare opportunity it really means a lot when I get a guide that really cares. Deion (I hope I spelled that right) was that guide. He told me he's only been with DC trails for a year and a half but he studies to learn all the fun trivia and neat facts about all the stops. Boy does he ever! He knows so many great facts and blow your mind details that I actually googled some of them because they sounded so far fetched! Nope! 100% accurate!! Absolutely shocking, do not purchase tickets for this hop on hop off service. The frequency is disgustingly poor. The wait was so long on both days that we had to spend an additional $40 on taxi fares to get around. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS COMPANY!!! In response to your reply. The drivers we encountered on these buses were friendly and kind. Only two, out of the 5 tour guides we experienced seemed ever remotely interested in being there and we spent most of our one day in DC waiting for these buses to come, while standing in the pouring rain, watching as other buses regularly went past us. They say 20-30 minutes between buses, which in itself is impossible to gauge and I can tell you it's just not true. To cap it off, we were dropped at a location that was closed, which was confusing to us because they literally skipped stops between where they picked us up (70 minutes later) and where we wanted to go (the White House visitor center). Didn't they know it was closed? We were dropped there and after a frustrating day of guesstimating when busses would arrive, we were done. We missed half of the city and wouldn't use this company again. Don't buy the groupon, it's not worth the frustration. read more

Bus takes about 30 minutes for the next bus to come. So you waste a lot of time waiting for the bus. Which is unfortunate. Their busses are usually crowded and finding a seat is sometimes difficult. During our time waiting for this bus we saw 4 or 5 big bus tour buses and two town trolley buses. This is probably the lower end of hop on and off buses as they go. Tour guides were not too helpful. One of them talked a lot about the BBQ festival and how she wanted to go. She provided little facts. I would recommend another bus service. Anyone else would work better. read more

minus 10 stars post it on fb today! friends and family we went threw hell because of dc trails!! so you will see this post every single day!!! until i get a refund and an apology!! sorry. do not buy hop on hop off tickets for dc trails!!! and also dont buy them on groupon... they have refused to refund money after dc trails hop on hop off failed to fulfill their obligation of showing up at the stops to pick us up!! and of failure to make the the stop at the wwii memorial... leaving us stranded for 2 hours at lincoln memorial and the same at the white house welcoming center. because of this we were only able to see three places of the 22 on their list!! we wete able to do a few on a free circulator bus!! that we found out about later that does the interational mall!! save yourself money... take the circulator bus that had we know you could just hop on one we would have done as we saw many as we waited for dc trails!!! also if you are healthy and have good working legs... you can walk from one museum to another and most of the memorials if its not hot!!! when we finally used the circulator bus the next day we were dropped of at tge smithsonian museum of natural history then from there we went to usda cafeteria and as we came out we actually saw the washington monument there within walking distance!!! the only one you really need a bus for is arlington cemetery... and you could just uber it from the lincoln memorial for a few bucks and worth it!!! if you do want hop on hop off still... use tge trolley, we always daw them!! wish i had used them. they came around every 15 20 minutes ... i know i watched them while waiting and waiting and sometimes chasing down ours as they drove by!! dc trails owes us at the very least .... a refund!!! i have attempted to contact them on their fb page do far no reply!! so my rating is "minus" 10 stars!! bianca johnson read more

This was our biggest mistake on this trip. The bus was hot and stuffy inside and smelled like diesel exhaust up top. The "tour" portion was difficult to hear and didn't actually add any value to the bus. The DC Circulator was a much better option with air conditioning and better frequency. We bought 6 tickets through Groupon to use when family visited from out of town. Two were elderly veterans. We called them several times to find the DC Trails stop. They told us where it was and we waited there for almost an hour and it never came. Finally called an Uber to get us around. Tickets are non-refundable. We used to use Old Towne Trolly and figured that DC Trails would be the same. It definitely was not. Next time we will use Old Towne again. read more

We arrived right when a bus took off (which is totally understandable). However, we were told the next bus will take off in 30 minutes (we were told that the bus takes off every 30 minutes). We then went for a walk and returned in 20 minutes, only to see the bus take off. Once I asked the DC Trail rep, he instantly was rude, and disrespectful. He stated the bus was completely full (which was a LIE), and that we should have returned sooner. I then stated he gave us false information, and that he should say the bus can take off within a specific timeframe or when the bus is full. Had he said that we would not have left. I then asked for a refund, he was extremely rude as to how to get my refund. Secondly, the bus schedule was extremely erratic, they were not every 30 minutes as stated (it was all over the place). I understand 1 bus had a flat tire, however their schedule was awful. DO NOT RIDE DC TRAILS - use any other service - or WALK - that's better than DC Trails!! read more

We should have checked the Yelp rating before buying the Groupon while visiting family near Washington DC. This was our first visit back there and due to my limited mobility, we signed up for a 6.5 hour guided tour to take place on April 1st at 10am. We arrived at the appointed location at 9:30 and were told our trip was cancelled, but we could come back tomorrow or take that day trip to Mt Vernon, or use the HopOn HopOff service. We did not travel 3,000 to wait until tomorrow after travelling in from Virginia on the Metro. We paid Groupon for the 6.5 hour guided tour and not the HOHO service. The driver and the guide were fine and we enjoyed Mr Goodman and the person speaking from the top of the bus - not their fault, but to be told when we showed up and the temperature on Monday, April 1st with the windchill was approximately 27 degrees. We will never use this service again as we do hope to re-visit WA DC at some point. read more

Please do not waste your money with this company. The company does not care about the safety of their customers. There is not enough seating inside the bus to accommodate the number of people scheduled for the tour, so there were 6 people standing on the bus. It was 40 degrees outside and the tour is 3.5 hours long. The tour guide stated that everyone must return to their original seat after each stop, but there were no assigned seats. Please find a different company that will not force you to stand for 3.5 hours or sit in 40 degree weather! Horrible service! I called tonight to make a reservation, and I was put on hold twice by a woman. After a 5 minute wait, I was talking to her about the reservation I was looking to make. All of a sudden, a guy jumped on the line and said: "Sir! Sir! Ma'am! We have an emergency here and I need her to help" and then hung up on me. Very great service! It does 30 minute intervals at all stops, which is just enough time to see the minor attractions and hop back on if you're fast enough. Honorable mention to Driver Cruz and the master of ceremonies Andrew (? I think) on Sunday morning. Aug 13th. The gentleman that runs the shuttle from Lincoln to Arlington, Anthony, was extremely personable and amazingly hospitable. My favorite is the night tour, they are constrained by the general hours of the municipality, so the night tour started at 7pm. Go there during the time of year when the sun sets at 7pm or soon after for the best effect. The night views are amazing. We had Britney as our tour guide for the night trip and she was an absolute doll. They take you off at close to a dozen stops and the tour guide walks you through the monuments and gives historical background on each. Brittney was very affable, knowledgeable, and made it very a memorable trip. All of the crew members of this company we're great, efficient, and hopefully they stand out amongst the competition, as they should! read more

This tour is an embarrassment to our nation's Capitol -- avoid at all costs. The bus may look appealing, as it is a double-decker, but there are so few of them, you will likely wait 30-45 minutes for one to arrive. The tour is almost laughably bad. The guides know nothing about history or the city of Washington, DC. Essentially, you ride in silence, and then someone comes on to say "Here is stop 8." Important buildings and landmarks were not pointed out. The "guide" was clearly reading off a script as she repeated herself verbatim more than once, usually pertaining to some business that likely pays the tour company to mention them. The guide pointed out food courts (!), fast food restaurants, and the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum (twice), but not historic markers. She spoke so quickly, and the quality of the audio was so poor, that we could barely understand her. At one stop she simply said, "You can get off here and do whatever you want I guess." We got off after 5 or 6 stops because the tour was completely worthless. You are better off trying one of the other companies or arranging for a private tour. DC Trails is a scam. read more

My family and I purchased tickets for the hop-on, hop-off bus because we thought it would be a fun way to experience Washington. It promised around 20 stops at attractions all throughout the city and a convenient way to get from place to place. However, the bus did not quite deliver on its promises. We were told that we either needed to stop at the bus ticket office to get our bus tickets or we could go directly to the bus. We rode the metro train to L'Enfant Plaza, where the ticket office was supposedly located. After looking around the plaza for at least 10-15 minutes, we could not find the ticket booth, even after asking people where it was! Eventually, we decided to just go outside, where we were able to get on the bus that was waiting there. When we got on the bus, there was a bit of trouble scanning the codes that we had printed out, and one code ultimately did not work, but we were allowed on the bus anyway. We thought that once we got on the bus, our experience would get better, but unfortunately, the bus simply continued to over-promise and under-deliver. The bus was advertised to begin running at 9; however, we got on the bus around 9:30 and had to wait until 10 for the bus to start moving! In the meantime, there was a man explaining the route of the bus to us and the few other passengers. In the half hour we were waiting, we got to hear his little spiel three times. We asked what sort of schedule the buses were on, and we were told that the buses would be at each stop "about every half an hour." At 10, the bus started running, and we were able to take the bus to the Museum of American History. On the way to the museum, the tour guide was talking about the sites we were driving by, but his microphone was extremely loud and there was often high-pitched feedback. He also did not allow anyone to stand on the bus, despite the bus having a rail to hold and a spot that was presumably for people to stand in. We were able to get off at the museum and we spent a few hours looking around in the area. Around 3:30, we wanted to get back on the bus. We were by Ford's Theater and Madame Tussaud's, so we decided to get on at the Madame Tussaud's/Hotel Harrington stop. We waited over half an hour for the bus, since there were no set arrival times, but not a single DC Trails bus showed up as we watched hundreds of other buses drive by. The takeaway: these buses have zero accountability. There is no set bus schedule and the tour is mediocre at best. The other bus services for tourists seem to work much more efficiently and provide a service that is actually usable. This bus is essentially worthless and I would recommend choosing a different hop-on hop-off bus service! read more

My sister and I used the on and off service all day with a 2 day pass we got on Groupon. It was $56 a person. Included in the price was a free night tour. It was a cold night on Memorial Day week but we all still rode up top to see the sights. The day service and staff were pleasant. The lower level was great when it started to pour outside. Buses came often and had plenty of room. The tour guides were ok. We have to talk about the night tour! It was exceptional! The guide was amazing. I thought this started off great... but, we got off the bus and at every single stop they emphasized "we will be stopping here for 30 seconds, please bring all your belongings. If you get off at this stop, we will pick you up at this stop."... cool, so we walked around for an hour or so... we go to the stop and the app says it will be 20 minutes until the next bus.
