My experience with Chariots for Hire was pretty good. We booked a large party bus to take about 20 of us to a vineyard that was close to 2 hours away. The bus fit everyone comfortably, and overall we had minimal issues. The only issue that did arise was a leak (from the air conditioning I believe) - but that was handled quickly and professionally by the owner (and our driver) once we returned from our trip. Our driver, Wei, arrived a half-hour early and was waiting for us to board at our start time. He was very friendly and professional. He also was very accommodating to our spontaneous requests for bathroom breaks and stopping to get snacks! Overall I would book with Chariots for Hire again in the future. read more

I have used Chariots for Hire for several years. I started an annual NYC day trip for my neighborhood and we had Mr. Reggie last year and this year. Mr. Reggie is one of the best drivers I've had. He arrives early no need yo stress of when the bus is arriving. My neighbors love him and was excited we had him again yesterday. Wei was very friendly, communicative, and respectful! We initially booked the 12 Passenger Mercury (Sprinter Van) for our Prom group to drive us to photos, dinner, and the dance itself. Making the reservations in the days/weeks leading up to the event was the most difficult and frustrating part. There was a lot of back and forth regarding different questions I had about the scheduling and timing. Eventually, though all was sorted out with minimal stress. The pricing of the bus itself was relatively fair. On the day of Prom itself, our driver, Wei, was perfectly on time and dressed and acted professionally. The bus was exactly as expected - clean, stocked with water, and fitted with a Bluetooth audio system to listen to music on the way. Over the course of the evening and multiple stops, Wei was extremely easy to communicate with by texts and was always punctual with pick-ups and drop-offs. He was polite and attentive the entire time. We were able to stick to our schedule over the course of our reservation, and we all made it back safe and sound! I can't say enough good things about Wei and the trip itself; we all had a great time and are very grateful for an easy and smooth Prom experience. The only shortfall was with some slight miscommunications when making the reservations online, at first, but those were (relatively) easily resolved. read more

I'm writing this review from the point of view of a parent. We reserved a prom package for our daughter in February, with final details to come the closer we got to the date. The week before prom I sent the final itinerary to the company. They sent a confirmation that was incorrect. We sent a correction and got back a corrected confirmation. The day of prom, the car arrives a bit early, which was nice because it was raining like crazy. We went out to check with the driver, after all, he'll be taking our daughter and four of her friends. I was a little put off because he hardly spoke English and the "suit" he was wearing was a tattered mess. I was starting to be uncomfortable sending the kids with him. But, they did go. After a bit, I checked to see if they had arrived yet at their dinner location (Find My Phone) and see that they are completely on the wrong side if town. Turns out the driver had written the itinerary on paper and completely left off their dinner stop. According to the kids, when they asked questions, he just stopped in the middle of the road in an intersection! They eventually made it to their dinner reservation, but he apparently dropped them off at a different restaurant across the parking lot and they had to get to the correct one in the rain, in their prom best. Once that seemed to be settled we eventually went to dinner ourselves. An hour after the kids were picked up, the phone rings and Chariots For Hire is on the phone. They say the driver is at our house to pick up our daughter. What?! She left an hour ago! The person just nonchalantly says ok, have a good. ???? Does this happen a lot?! After our daughter arrived home that evening, we asked her about the driver. She said she and her friends were nervous and held onto each other several times because he would just stop in random places and make unpredictable turns. She said a few times he just stopped in intersections to look at his paper. He used Ways for navigation and kept the phone on his lap, so he was looking down a lot and not at the road. I'm told he would sometimes pick up the phone and steer with the back of his hand while doing something with his paper with the other hand. We hired a car for the kids so they could SAFELY enjoy their special night, but it seems Chariots For Hire was a huge mistake. We would have been better of to just rent a nice car ourselves and drive them for the night. Additionally, Chariots For Hire automatically charged a gratuity of 20% to our card. There's absolutely no way we would have tipped the driver this much, if at all, based on how he regarded the safety of our children. read more

I accidentally left my phone in the car and messaged the driver immediately, but despite reading my messages and still having 30 minutes left in the ride, he refused to stop or respond. I had to drive over an hour to retrieve my phone. A small courtesy stop would have taken just 10 minutes. This level of disregard for customers is unacceptable. read more

Terrible bus company to rent buses from. In October 2022, I reserved 2 56-passenger buses for two Confirmation retreats. The first weekend, the company sublet a different bus company to drive a bus for us. (Didn't inform me whatsoever) Not only were they a half hour late, but it was a 40 passenger bus. I had nearly 40 boys and 15 adults I informed the incompetent driver. He shrugged his shoulders. I to quickly get rides for the overflow. On our way at 7 pm not 6:00 pm as requested. The headlights were not working as we left the parking lot. I informed the driver who didn't know where the right switch was. He kept using his cell phone to talk to another bus driver. A half hour into the hour and 15 minute trip, the bus just stalled and shut down. The bus driver again called his buddy, checked the back engine and had to put oil in the engine. The bus started and we were on our way after a 30 minute delay. Another 20 minutes went by and again the bus stalled, this time on a busy highway. The driver checked the back engine again, with a cop's help. We finally got the bus on its way (another 30 minute delay). We get to the retreat site at 9:15 pm. The driver never apologized, barely spoke English and took off after unloading our luggage and youth. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! Since we couldn't cancel the next weekend's bus, I called everyday to insure a 56 passenger bus with a competent driver got to St Mark on time. It was 15 minutes late, but everything went fine on the bus ride to the retreat center. When I called the company's headquarters( at least a dozen times) and asked to talk with the owner, I got the runaround for nearly 3 WEEKS. The owner was supposedly out of the office-sick. He finally called me and said all he could do is refund that portion of the bus trip, nothing else like reimbursing us for some adult leaders having to drive kids and delaying our arrival due to incompetency. I TOLD HIM ST MARK AND THE DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON WOULD NEVER USE THEIR SERVICES AGAIN AND WOULD SPREAD THE WORD. He only apologized and said nothing more. This company left a group of 20-plus friends stranded when their driver got lost on the way to the pickup spot. They seem to have poorly trained drivers, questionable practices, and terrible customer service. Long story short: it took 5 phone calls over the course of 45 minutes on the day of my pickup to learn that there wouldn't be a bus coming, after the dispatch operator had repeatedly assured me that the bus would be arriving momentarily. The operator was not the least bit apologetic. At this point, I have 23 people stranded, who have been waiting for almost an hour, and who had each purchased a nonrefundable ticket to the activity we had hired this company to take us to. In two follow-up phone calls with the manager, I learned that the driver was lost since she had no way to navigate (she didn't have her phone with her). I was given a refund for the bus, but that does not even begin to compensate my party for our losses related to the no-show bus and not being able to participate in our activity as planned. The manager took over a week to get back to me informing me that the company is not taking responsibility for the screw-up. One unsettling piece of information I learned is that their standard practice is to ask each passenger to sign an agreement agreeing not to write negative reviews in exchange for a refund. I was apparently done "a favor" by not being held to this policy. Stay far away from this company! They look like they have lower upfront prices, but it is not worth it in the end. So we have used Chariots for Hire for prior events, including an event this past weekend. This past weekend we had enterred into a signed contract to use their bus service many months earlier. We entered into a contract allowing and paying for extra travel time as we had to be at our destination by a drop dead critical arrival time. We had confirmed all information prior to the day of the event because it was important that the bus and driver pick us up by a specific time and get us to our destination on time. On the day of the event, no bus and no driver. We called dispatch and they said they could not find the address on file. (Subsequently, we found out that they had evidently keyed in the wrong dispatch address from the contractual records that we signed and had given them.) On the day of the event we demanded they get someout out there and take care of us. Unfortunately the dispatch personnel were quite short with us and insisted that we had given them a bad address, (which is not correct, we gave them the correct address on the contract. They keyed it in incorrectly.) Finally the bus arrived and I was able to influence the driver to get us to our destination quickly. I did tip the driver as I have always done in the past. Subsequently, evidently one of the passengers left a pair of glasses on the bus. Chariots for Hire did call me and told me that this was left behind. I asked them to simply mail us the glasses. Again, the dispatcher and manager said that they could not do that unless I paid for special shipping. Keep in mind that we have used this vendor many times before; each time incurring a significant bill of thousands of dollars for their service. Yet, now they insist that we have to pick up left items at their offices and/or have them specially shipped and insurred at our additional expense. I happen to know the part owners and founders of this business. I originally sent them the business to help out these fellow business owners. Yet, I also know the owners of Reston Limosine Services. On a go forward basis we will be using Reston Limosine as this is their main competition in this already competitive delivery service business. I too am a business owner, and I was amazed at the rudeness that we received from their dispatching office as they insisted that everything was our fault. I suggested that they have one of the owners reach out to me, to which the dispatch office said they would not do. And so, I know unfortunately am writing an uncomfortable review. Beware, there are many chartering services here in the Washington DC area. Review and make your selection wisely. read more

Unfortunately, terrible experience. We booked an SUV for a wine tour on Saturday and did not feel safe in the vehicle. We kindly asked the driver to pull over at a gas station and he did listen. It seemed he had no idea how to operate the particular model of the car. We tried to get back on the road and again, needed to ask him to pull over because we did not feel safe. We did try to contact dispatch on Saturday and all they could say was "we don't have any other cars for your group". We did not want to return to his vehicle and therefore lost out on our service. We had scheduled 3 winery experiences for the day and had to use Uber to safely get us place to place so we didn't lose out on our winery reservations. Unfortunately that left us lugging around coolers and wine purchases throughout the day and asking for these wineries to accommodate those belongings (thankfully all the wineries were wonderful and sympathetic to our situation). We chartered four buses for a 15 hour each way trip. ***One bus had control panel issues that left the bus without signals. Five hours into the trip the bus would not start and we had to evacuate the students due to the smell of smoke. ***Two buses leaked on top of a teacher and students during the rain. Water ran into the cargo hold getting luggage and clothing wet. ***One bus had acceleration issues and had difficulty reaching legal speeds on the freeway. ***One of the buses bathroom was not serviced prior to the trip and caused an obnoxious odor. While another bus was not stocked with toilet paper. ***One bus the air conditioning went out--with 40 people on board it made for an uncomfortable ride. ***We were left stranded with 190 students, in a parking lot for two plus hours, in a city we were not familiar with. because the bus drivers did not show up on time. This caused us to miss prepaid dinner reservations and a scheduled prepaid concert.. This is just a snap shot of the difficulties and does not cover all we experienced. Each bus had an issue and we were put in questionable situations due to staffing and mechanical failures. I could not in good conscience recommend this company to anyone. read more

Booked a six-hour, 22 person van tour of a few breweries in Gaithersburg, MD. We were due back at 6:00pm and left the final brewery at 5:10PM since the GPS said the ride back would take roughly 50 minutes. Because of some pretty shocking traffic the driver ended up taking an alternate route to get us back. It ended up taking us 1 hr and 20 minutes to get back. Surprisingly, I woke up the next morning to an $80 late fee. I called to try and explain the crazy traffic and route situation thinking it was simply a misunderstanding but the customer service refused to budge. Truly shocking that they would nickel and dime a customer who had just paid over $1,000 including tip. You would have had a returning customer but you have lost my business. These things happen, didn't slow us down or bring the day down at all, the driver had us safely pulled over and kept the good times going until a new ride quickly pulled up and we continued on our day. We chose Chariots for Hire because they were listed on our venue's preferred vendors and we had heard that they are top of the line. Unfortunately, our experience was AWFUL. On the night of our rehearsal dinner, the driver arrived over 20 minutes late. That was okay because we planned ahead to leave us plenty of time to get there with Friday traffic. After we were driving for about 5 minutes, the driver stopped us at a 7-11. He said he needed to get gas. We sat there for at least 10 minutes without getting any gas. He said he couldn't get to the gas pump, so we got back on the road and he stopped again at another gas station. We were at that gas station for 30 minutes. At this point, our rehearsal was already supposed to have started at 4:30 and it was now 4:40. The driver claimed he didn't have time to get gas before picking us up and when I said we were already late for our rehearsal, he asked what time we were supposed to be there. He only pumped about 17 gallons of gas and it took over 30 minutes. We were an hour late for our rehearsal and an hour late for our rehearsal dinner. Both the driver and his "assistant" were very unprofessional. On the way back from our rehearsal dinner, which was then cut short because we were over an hour late and only had the place for 3 hours, the bus broke down in the middle of the road. They said it would be at least 45 minutes before someone could come get us. We began to call relatives to come pick us up, and after about 15 minutes, the bus turned back on. On our wedding day, we had one shuttle for the bridal party since we had to arrive early for pictures. The shuttle was supposed to drop us off and still had plenty of time to go back to the hotel to pick up guests in addition to the other bus we rented. Only one bus arrived at the hotel so all of our guests could not fit on the shuttle and had to carpool with someone who had their car. We called after the weekend and asked for some type of partial refund and explained what happened and management was so rude. They had no interest in taking any accountability for anything or giving us any of our money back. We spent over $6,000 with this transportation company and they continuously disappointed us. We are pretty easy going people in general and were okay with a few hiccups like them being a little late on Friday, but the rest of the events that occurred were absolutely awful. We have asked our venue to remove them from their preferred vendors list. I highly recommend going with a different transportation company. read more

My husband and I, along with 7 of our friends needed to rent a van/bus to take us to a music event being held at a brewery in Round Hill, VA. The person I spoke to, Cody (I think that was his name), was very friendly and helpful in explaining the size of buses that were available and the pricing. Since we didn't need the bus to stay, our reservation was just for drop off and pick up and the price was just right for us. Our bus ride down was on the Mercury which was the perfect size for us, driven by Clayton. He was extremely nice, arrived right on time, explained how all the things worked on the bus, and really helped us have a fun ride to the event. And he had no problem waiting a few extra minutes while we got all our items ready before getting on the bus. And the bus ride back was so much fun! The bus was actually a larger model of what we rode down in and had the fun pole...such a great surprise, especially when celebrating birthdays! Our driver, Mamady, also arrived right on time, seemed just as excited as we were, was all smiles, and he also helped make our ride extremely fun, and got us home safely. Complete failure. Took the "ballpark bus" to the redskins game and they did not know they needed a parking pass! How do you not know this? So we had to park in the free lot and trek through the wood and cross a stream when it is freezing cold. The driver said we had an hour after the game but almost 1.5 hours and still waiting. I have tried all the ways to get to the stadium and unfortunately PAY for the parking pass and control where you park and when you leave. We used Chariots for Hire this past weekend and had the BEST experience! Moruece was our driver and was right on time (even a little early actually). They had actually emailed me his cell phone number and information the night before his arrival which was super convenient and he also helped us get all our bags on the bus, had everything fully stocked (waters, clean champagne glasses, etc.) and even had the music already playing for us! The bus itself was super clean and really comfortable for our large group - everything I had hoped for. We rented the 27 passenger Titus limo bus which was perfect for our group of 23 along with bags and coolers that we brought. If you have 27 people I would suggest getting something larger as this size was perfect for us! We did a wine tour so we chose three wineries to go to. He had everything mapped out ahead of time and I must add he was also SO friendly and nice! At the first winery, the bus had to park pretty far from the entrance, but he gladly took us straight to the front and came back to pick us up when I called his cell. The air conditioning wasn't the best (especially with it being over 90 degrees this past weekend), BUT he made it as cool in the bus as he possibly could for 23 people! He was even nice enough to swing by a local gas station so that my friends could use an ATM - super accommodating! We hired Chariots for Hire to take guests from a church parking lot to our home on the river which has little to no parking. There were only approximately 30 people that needed to be transported. The bus arrived in the worst condition that you can possibly imagine. It had apparently been in a car accident and had not been cleaned. The interior was equally as bad the upholstery was dirty and had several tears and rips. Even the seals for the doors were hanging in mid air so that there were gaps to the outside. The vehicle also had been sprayed with some type of deodorant that smelled like an a restroom in a strip club,the condition of the vehicle that they sent was so poor that I was compelled to send it back and cancel the service as they were unable to provide a solution. I felt badly for the driver whose time they had wasted. I was told to call on MondaySpace about a refund. I called and was told that they would refund the balance but they were not going to refund the deposit. I felt that this was unfair as they were unable to correct the problem and as they had sent a vehicle that was in such poor deplorable condition that it was impossible for us to comfortably use for our event. They asked me to call back closer to the wedding date with the total number of guests which I did. Well they booked another bus when I called back which I was not aware of. So they sent two buses to the hotel which my husband questioned and they assured him it was all paid for. Well he thought maybe they sent two busses instead of doing two trips. For our annual Redskins-Eagles tailgate spectacular at FedEx, we decided to go with Chariots for Hire this year. They did not disappoint. Our group was about 55 strong so we went with a charter bus so we could fit our entire group plus all of our essentials. We all fit on the bus without any problems and were super comfortable. There was a ton of space above us to put smaller items like jackets, footballs, and purses. As for the other things we brought, several coolers, cases of beer, and tables, it all fit neatly in the side storage area of the bus with no problem at all. Our driver arrived probably 10 or 15 minutes before he was scheduled to, so we were able to start loading everything earlier which was a huge help. Coming from Arlington for a 1 PM game at FedEx, that was a nice bonus. Our driver killed it all day. He got us there and back safely and in a timely manner, and was just a nice dude in general. I can't recommend Chariots for Hire enough for big group outings or when you're in need of transportation larger than what a couple of uber's would hold. They've got our business again next year for sure. read more

I'll attempt to keep this review as objective as possible, but it will be difficult considering the quality of service (or maybe non-service? disservice?) that I've received from Chariots for Hire. For our wedding day, we reserved 3 vehicles for transportation and confirmed the reservation multiple times. Vehicle 1 - 14 Passenger Van - Scheduled to pick up the bridal party from the church after the ceremony (3:30pm) and take us to the reception venue for pictures before the guests arrive. They sent a 14 passenger van, but it was missing an entire row of seats. An 11-seater 14 passenger van. We were forced to flag down family members in the street and ask them to go directly to the reception venue and not back to the hotel first as they had originally planned. Not what we paid $565 dollars for. Vehicle 2 - 56 Passenger Bus - Scheduled to pick up guests from the hotel at 4:30pm and take them to the reception. 4:15pm... no bus. 4:30pm... no bus. 5:00pm (reception starts)... still no bus. Needless to say, my new wife and I were a little stressed out that the reception had started and half of the guests were still missing. After our friend had called Chariots for Hire multiple times, a party bus (the ones with stripper poles - defiantly not what we ordered) arrives at the hotel at 5:15pm and the remaining guests cram in and show up to the reception an hour late. Vehicle 3 - 33 Passenger Bus - Scheduled to pick up guests from the hotel at 4:30pm and take them to the reception. This one actually showed up on time and was the correct vehicle. Two out of three ain't bad, right? Not when it's one of the most important days of your life that you spend months planning, confirm your transportation reservation multiple times and drop over $2,000 so that your friends and family can enjoy the reception and not have to worry about driving. Needless to say, there were some people that were upset. I wish the story ended here. The next day we receive an email from Chariots for Hire thanking us for our new $57 purchase. Apparently one of the busses went over the booked time slot and they charged us an overage fee. Really? They show up an hour late and then charge us a fee when they (allegedly) went over the paid time? Upon calling Chariots for Hire the next day to explain the situation (and inquire about the $57 charge), they seemed like they could care less. Not once did we receive an apology or an admission of wrongdoing. I might as well have been speaking into the box at a drive-through. After being on the phone for 40 minutes, we were assured that someone from customer service would call us on 10/11 - the day we were back from our honeymoon. I followed up today and was told that the only person that can help me is on a medical leave of absence. I will be sure to update this response with their resolution. **UPDATE** Was contacted fairly quickly by the owner after posting my review (thanks, Yelp!) and was able to work out a resolution that I felt was appropriate. read more

I wouldn't use Chariots for Hire again. They were really easy to book, schedule, re-schedule, and handle everything on the front end, but their actual performance was poor and their handling of the problems after the fact was also unreasonable. We rented a van to go wine tasting in Virginia. The van arrived at 10AM as expected, but the driver was sleeping and looked exhausted. Also, the driver needed to take ten minutes to fix the seatbelts in the front seats, something that came in handy later. Why were the seat belts so handy? Well, the driver's driving was not good. He was all over the road, frequently crossing over the lane lines, and at one point nearly got into a head on collision on a country road at a high rate of speed. Luckily, we survived. In addition to this, the driver got us home late and Chariots for Hire charged us for the additional time. The manager who I talked to after the fact was very confrontational, mean, and was not willing to completely refund the additional time. I was very disappointed that this was how everything turned out given how easy it was when booking. And given the manager's response after the fact (arguing with me about whether the driver's routes were reasonable and complaining that I should have called dispatch immediately regarding his poor driving), I couldn't help but think they didn't care. Their inability to refund the whole overtime fee proves my point. Overall, disappointed with their performance and professionalism. **UPDATE AND RESPONSE TO COURTNEY W.'S COMMENTS** You arrived, at most, 3 minutes early. That's not arriving early. That's arriving on time. More importantly though, your response to my review doesn't address the main problem (which is consistent with your company's failure to address it on the phone with me privately). The principal concern I had was that you provided me with a driver who was not fit to drive and your response doesn't address that issue at all. I don't care about the money.
