This place is a rip off! I purchased 4 48 hour tours SUPPOSEDLY including the twilight tour. When we boarded at 1:30pm, the lady who redeemed our vouchers told me I had to call & make a reservation for the twilight tour I was told they were "ALL BOOKED UP" for today! AND that I could not make a reservation for tomorrow until tomorrow! I was also told that the last bus reservations open up for the twilight busses @ 1pm. Apparently it was important for the woman who redeemed my voucher to tell me to call that bee minute BECAUSE THEY FILL UP FAST! Which she did not. I strongly advise you to think twice before booking with this company! There are many others to chose from! read more

We used the hop on hop off bus line from 9am til 5pm and it was a very cold day but all the guides were awesome and the bus rides were quick and they were pretty good on being at each stop within 30 minutes. No complaints would recommend it to anyone who is looking for some flexibility in there trip. Also a little side note if you go to Le'fant plaza station at 9 the pick up location is outside on the top level of the plaza. It is very confusing when you google search the address so it was hard to find the starting point had to do a bit of walking to find. Another thing that was awesome about the experience was riding with Vern. He was very engaged and was super humorous in the way he delivered his facts. read more

We took the twilight tour of the Washington memorials last night. May19,2017. Jerry was our driver and Henry was the tour guide. It was excellent, Henry was fun, funny, professional, and educational. He did a great job telling us all the facts of things we were seeing and above all, he made sure we were safe. Henry really made it interesting. read more

Dc Trails, more like D.C. Fails, more like D.C. snails. We get on the bus, it keeps repeating to download the app for 30 minutes while we wait in the hot sun - then the door won't close and the bus won't start so we have to wait even longer. Finally the bus moves and there is no commentator so we just listen to some pre recorded information that isn't playing on schedule.... Stay away like the plague. I'm getting off the next stop and taking this as a major L. read more

Might as well be called DC Fails!! We came on a weekend trip and got this tour because of the apparent good reviews. It was anything but that. Buses were never on time, wasted a lot of time just waiting around. About 40 min for the next bus. We saw at least 3 Big Bus Tour buses each time year we waited for ours. We got caught in traffic and couldn't finish the tour. They cut it short about 1/2 way through (at the Tidal Basin) and had to go back to headquarters. We were given the option to just walk but then we would have to figure out how to get back. The only good thing about that was that we were compensated a full extra day of tours. On our 2nd day, we finished touring the monuments and Arlington. We took the shuttle to Arlington National Cemetery, which only fit about 15 passengers. People were left behind to wait for the next one. Thank God that didn't happen to us!! The tour guides were great, knowledgeable, and funny! Joe and Deon were our guides. They kept us entertained throughout the tour. They even gave us some current events. The tour guides were the only good thing about this company. read more

Purchased a 48 hour hop-on hop-off tour of Washington over the Memorial Day long weekend. Groupon has been selling tickets at a 30% to 40% discount for some time for this tour. The buses were clean and staff were helpful. There a live guide providing descriptions of the city as opposed to other tours where you listen to a pre-recorded set with headphones. The tour was informative and well done. The twilight tour was my favorite aspect of the tour as the bus would stop at the various monuments and the guide would get off the bus and walk the tourists through each monument. Well worth seeing the sights at night. Their App to track the arrival times of buses was also helpful. We did have a little difficulty booking the twilight tour with our Groupon as there seems to be a slight disconnect with the office when we called in. There wasn't really a need to use the bus for the second day of the 48 hours as we had already seen what the bus was showing. The Metro was an easier method of transportation for what we wanted to do on the second day. read more

Absolute worst. Website says tour buses come every 20-30 minutes. Tour guides say every 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. We waited over 1-hour and 10 minutes for a bus to come. When we called to complain we were told "we only have four operational buses right now." Of course, we weren't given that information when we booked our tickets. The following day, we were stranded for 45-minutes because a bus broke down and the bus that was en route to the Capitol was rerouted to pick up those on the broken bus. While waiting endlessly for our bus to arrive, we noticed D.C. trolley and City Sites seemed to have the most frequent buses - we saw at least 8 on our 70-minute wait for one D.C. Trails bus. Big B Bus was a quick third. Three calls were made to management. Phone call was never returned. Truly the low point of our trip read more

I just took this tour with a 3 year old and we had a good time. My son wanted to get on a hop on hop off bus, and so I researched several companies. I chose this DC Trails because it is $7.00 cheaper. The other company offers admission to the wax museum(Madam Tussauds), but my 3 year old probably wouldn't know anyone in the museum so chose to save money. Other reviewers are right about seeing the other companies buses more. I think I also saw about 3 Big B buses come to my stop before DC Trails. With that being said, the wait was not long. I may have waited about 10 minutes for a bus but I downloaded the app and kept track of the estimated arrival time. The arrival times were a little off but not so long that I became agitated or upset. Overall, I had a good experience. The guides were friendly and funny. All of the staff were welcoming and had good energy, breaking the ice with themselves and the riders. One guide, a guy from Chicago, was great! If you're looking to take children under 5 this is great because they ride free. My son loved it and enjoyed seeing the city from atop a bus. Side Note: I got a little lost when trying to find the stop and the GPS was not working. If you're catching Metro (L'Enfant Plaza) you'll have to walk up the steps by the shops at the 700 street exit. read more

On the weekend of June 23rd, my boyfriend and I purchased our rides with DC Trails via Groupon (48 hour drop off/pick up tour with the twilight tour). The check in process was seamless as we showed our vouchers to the agent and got on the bus which was leaving 15 minutes later. Our daytime tour guides were good--friendly, knew their history and were entertaining. The company was also easy to contact as they were a quick call away to let us know how far the bus was from our location. However, the best part of the tour and DC TRAILS was our twilight night tour guide named Henry. Please call and only go on a tour with him and even request him for any group tours offered by DC Trails. He was PHENOMENAL, personable, witty, kept everyone's energy at an all time, ensured the group's safety while being extremely knowledgeable on his DC history. Our experience seemed like the best history class I've ever taken! He made us laugh, checked in on us to make sure the entire group was doing alright. We would consider going on another tour with a larger group only if Henry is our tour guide again--he is DC Trails' true gem and heart of the company. read more

The tour bus is a nice idea if you have all the time in the world to wait. They say they stop every 30 minutes and it couldn't be any farther from the truth and the app is incredibly inaccurate. At one point it said 15-25minutes and showed up 10 minutes early and we almost missed it due to a bathroom stop for our toddler. Luckily I was waiting and able to use my mom yell to get their attention so they could dash back. We stood at the 11th stop for well over an hour, tracking the buses, ended up in a rain storm, and ended up after probably 90 minutes sending my husband by taxi to retrieve our car from across the city. My uncle only had 2 stops he really wanted to visit and we weren't even able to make it because our time was wasted standing around twiddling our thumbs. While waiting though we saw the Big Bus Tour several times, so I'd say you'd have better luck with that company. read more

We booked the Friday night tour on Sept. 1st. Although we had been on the DC Trails bus already the previous day we were blown away at how much we learned from our guide, Henry. He was engaging, funny and full of amazing details about everything we saw. I couldn't believe the depth of his knowledge and his obvious passion for it. You can tell he loves what he does and we were very impressed. A definite highlight of our trip for sure. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g28970-d3164156-r520831901-DC_Trails-Washington_DC_District_of_Columbia.html# read more

I'm from the "other Washington" as one might say so when I came to DC for the first time I wanted to get my monies worth and see as much as I could before having to fly home. I am SO, SO happy I went with the DC Trails tour! Seriously, I LOVED my tour. My mom and I signed up for the all-day tour which picked us up right on time at our hotel (a smaller bus picked us up and took us to the larger double-decker bus). Once on the big bus our tour got started. Our tour guide (Demi) was super nice and had a ton of interesting and fun facts about DC and the surrounding areas. We saw everything we wanted to see; The White House, Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, MLK Memorial, FDR Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, just to name a few. My only complaint (& it's a small one) is the break for lunch was 90 minutes at the Pentagon Mall. Seriously - do you know how hard it is to waste time for 90 mins? We didn't want to shop because we didn't want to have to lug a bunch of bags with us & lunch really only took 30 mins. I feel this break could be shortened to allow more time at other destinations. Some of the other breaks to explore are only around 15 mins which made me feel a tad rushed at times but I digress. This tour was TOTALLY worth what we paid for and I would take another DC Trails tour in a heartbeat. You should too! read more

Me and my family had awesome time in DC .. thanks to D.C. Trails. Buses were good and guides were extremely nice. Buses frequency was in every 20-30 mins. We covered lot of places in one day. I definitely recommend this tour. read more

Dion was the best! Downloaded the app and it was right on the money for when the buses arrived. Would totally use them again!

Pros: - Air conditioned buses - Live tour guide - Clean buses Cons: - They tell you the buses come every 30 minutes but it doesn't. The buses come every 1 hour - 1.5 hours. We were stuck at the Jefferson Memorial in 95* weather for over an hour. Recommendations: - If you want to take a hop on and off bus tour I recommend Big Bus Washington DC or CitySights because we saw 8 of them pass us in the one hour we were waiting for the DC Trails bus. read more

This whole operation is a scam. The buses are arrive every 30 minutes at best and take an additional 10+ minutes to unload and load. I expected to learn something remotely informative about DC, but instead our tour guide focused on the differences between the McDonald's menus along the tour. He then told us we were passing "some government buildings." Are you kidding me? There are many other bus options in the city which will pass you over and over again as you wait for one DC Trails bus. Take any of them instead - they can't be worse than DC Trails. If you are wondering why multiple people wrote the same review it is because it was that bad. There were 9 of us. We wasted $500 and got off on the second stop just to try and salvage some of our day. Also, our 24 hour time continued through Monday because they were closed Sunday without any notice or posting of this when we bought our tickets. Ugh. read more

My main objective was to do a night time tour, and that was a success. This company has a pick up point at our hotel, so that made them the winner. We were picked up in one bus, not the same logo, so that confused us and the other pick ups he did, be he was helpful and funny and brought us to our meet up point with the double decker bus. We all rallied downtown and merged onto a double decker bus. It was early may, so it wasn't super crowded. Our tour guide DeDe was fabulous. She humorous and helpful and super informational. We started by driving by the capital building, then down pensylvania, first stop was the white house, currently they only allow you to stop at the back, so we had about 15 minutes to go over there. After that we continued back down past the mall, we got to see some of the monuments from the front as well as the whitehouse far away. Next we continued on and saw some additional sites on the way to the next stop which was the Lincoln memorial, korean and vietnam and we got to spend a bit of time there as the sun went down, it was great to see them all in all the different lighting. After that we moved onto the MLK monument, which was pretty amazing, and absolutely stunning at night. The words were well selected and looked great lit up. The other side of that stop was the FDR monument, which was very large and not wel lit at all, but pretty at night. The final stop of the evening was the Iwo Jima monument and that was a stunning monument and the one that is actually in Virginia vs DC itself. The tour itself last a long time - we were picked up at 6pm and dropped off at 10/10:30 pm Pro tip: sit on the right side of the bus, most all the things to see are on that side of the bus. read more

Listen. This is not good for a hop on hop off tour. It's just not. They say buses come every 30-40 minutes, but we waited over an hour. The entire day, we managed to hop on and off ONCE. We got tired of wasting hours waiting and ended up walking 8 miles. Luckily, groupon refunded my money because it really ruined our experience. We legitimately rode the city bus around faster than this. ALSO: Some of the "bus stops" have no sign. You're just standing there forever, hoping it's the right place. That being said, if you buy the groupon for $20, it's an excellent opportunity to hop on once and ride the entire loop. Just don't expect to hop off and get back on easily. I called when I was waiting and complained, and they explained they only have 5 busses. You should know that before you buy. The trolly company, and City Sights dc bus company passed us multiple times while we waited for this company. Go with them if you want to hop on and off. read more

DC Trails - Great tour. Henry is the best guide !!!!! - Buses Near Me - Lorton, Virginia

Ok...so here is my story. I really liked the guides on the buses, I thought there were very nice and each one had their own stories to tell. Here is why I am not a fan of actually getting the bus. If you start out at Arlington, you need to take a shuttle, but their shuttle driver didn't know anything, so when we were let off at the Lincoln, we had no clue where to stand, where the bus would come from etc. It was the same for the shuttle, we called and the lady on the phone actually told me she didn't know where the shuttle picks people up. I just think that's unacceptable. We did travel during the high season of visitors to DC so the bus in the afternoon was quite full. It would be nice too if they would update their app to reflect when buses would come to the number stops. That helps with timing. read more

The buses are supposed to run every 30 minutes but it's probably more like 60-90 minutes. Currently I've been waiting almost 60 minutes, so I called to ask for an update for my bus stop... they'll always tell you 15-20 minutes because I called earlier after I had been waiting 45 minutes and they said the same thing. Also, the app doesn't work like it's supposed. Don't waste your money!! Take the Big Bus instead! read more

We bought the 48-hour hop on/hop off ticket with the added monuments twilight tour in Washington DC (online before our travel) and it was great. We hopped on at the stop that was closest to our Airbnb and rode to our first stop. We went to 2 museums on our first day and when it was time to hop back on we never waited more than about 10 minutes for the next bus. Our tour guide Brittany was knowledgeable and understandable (we had her on every bus we rode which I suspect is unusual). The twilight memorial tour is awesome and is worth the price, especially if it is an add-on - but be aware that it is a lot of walking and if you've already walked all day? Eek. Brittany got off the bus with us during the twilight tour and helped us navigate the memorials. You might spend a little less getting around by other means but you'll miss out on the interesting facts that come with a tour. read more

The only way to experience DC. Super easy to find & Staff super friendly. Thank you for an amazing day!

This is one of the worst or maybe the worst hop on hop off I have taken so far. Do not go by the price, it is not really worth it. You can maybe use those dollars and have a taxi/cab drop you. Multiple issues with this operator: 1) Very few buses, even on long memorial weekend. For one bus of this operator, I could see there were roughly 5 to 6 buses of big bus or city sights. 2) We had to wait for almost 60 minutes at stop number 4. When the bus arrived, people were literally fighting to get on the bus. Some even had to drop off and God knows how long they had to wait again. 3) Their representatives manning the stops are extremely rude and ill informed. They do not do anything to help assuage your wait. 4) Apart from half a trip of 40 mins, I didnt use this service at all. Now how on earth does this qualify for hop on hop off. My recommendation, go for big bus or city sights. They have far better frequency and service. read more

This has definitely been the highlight of our trip!! We went on the night tour last night with Henry and he really seems passionate about the history of DC!! I am so grateful I saw the monuments this way because I would never have know the symbolism and meaning behind each one!! My only suggestion is if you purchase in advance make sure you can do the 48 hours straight and the night tour. We are only able to do the first day pass and night tour so now money wasted. The night tour is definitely better than the day tour as the tour guide gets off the bus with you and guides you through some of the most popular monuments! read more

Great tour... for those of us that do not have mobility/ambulation limits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update- for full disclosure: I want to make it clear that I am NOT blaming DC Trails for the fact that we did not have wheelchair for my dad. We made arrangements at all other locations that required more walking than he is able to participate in without assistance. We signed up for a bus tour with the understanding that his mobility would be a non issue- as most of the tour would be taking place on a bus. I'm upset by how the conversation is being handled- I do not want other people to go through the same experience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My family took part in the Twilight Tour on 1/26/20. I want to start off by saying that Dre was an excellent guide, and we enjoyed him immensely! This review is not that of the tour itself (would give 5 stars for the tour and Dre), but of DC Trails as a company. The reason for my review is to express my disappointment with the description of the tour and the amount of walking that would be required. My dad, who has mobility issues and walks with a cane due to several surgeries, was unable to partake in over half of the tour due to the amount of walking that was required of him. He returned to the bus and remained there from the FDR portion of the tour until the end. He was unable to see the MLK memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial, and take part in the accompanying history provided by Dre. The description of the tour stated that we would visit all of these sites and that the time would range from 15-45 minutes, but it did not include any information about the distances that would be covered on foot. Had we known, we would have arranged to bring him in a wheelchair so that he could take part in the tour that he paid for. I contacted DC trails directly and, provided the above information and asked for a refund for his portion of the tour, since was not able to participate, and an update to the website to include the estimated walking distances for those with limited mobility. Their response was: "Unfortunately we cannot control where the US. Park Police allow the tour buses to drop and pick-up passengers. Please note that all buses pick-up and drop off at the same locations and unfortunately we would not be able to assist you with a refund." No mention of updating their website, or acknowledgment regarding the lack of information provided - just blame on the DC Park Police. It's disheartening that the Nation's Capitol was made inaccessible by the simple lack of an accurate description of the tour and that DC Trails was unwilling to take any responsibility for their lack of transparency. After I originally posted this review, the conversation with DC trails continued as follows: The representative from DC Trails continued the conversation: "We are not required to post how long it takes to walk from the bus to a memorial. All stops have different timing. Quite frankly I don't know of any companies that post that type of information on their websites. Also, all of our buses are ADA compliant and that information is posted on our website as required by DDOT . We are not responsible for guest leaving behind their needed wheelchairs to get around in." To which I replied: Again, I understand what you are saying. But to be clear, I did not ask how long it would take to walk, I was purely discussing distance- and had we known the distance we'd be covering on foot, we most definitely would have rented a wheelchair, just as we did at all of the other locations that required more walking than he is able to without assistance. The fact that your buses are ADA compliant means nothing to me- that is the law. What I am discussing is DC Trails apparent lack of courtesy for those who are not able bodied and your unprofessional, finger pointing response- which based on your level of defensiveness tells me that I am not the first, nor will I be last person to comment on this issue. Bottom line is, I'm unhappy but you have my money. So I guess you win. My reviews have been posted and this conversation is over. read more

Hard to find where the tours begin. When we got off the metro we had to keep walking in circles and calling the company for directions to the starting point. But the people answering the phone couldn't give directions--for example one woman couldn't tell us east, west, north, south. Finally we found the place. Then we had to wait several minutes for the tour to begin. The staff seemed to wait to fill the bus before taking off even though it meant the passengers sitting for several minutes (at least 10) wondering what was going on because they didn't announce a start time. The tour guide was nice. She said when you want to get back on the tour, you shouldn't have to wait more than 20 minutes for a bus and, if you do wait longer, to call the company. We got off at the history museum and when we wanted to get back on we waited 40 minutes. We called and the man who answered the phone said "I don't know why she told you 20 minutes, it's really 30 minutes." We said we were disappointed about the misinformation, and he HUNG UP on us. I called back and a woman said, "it's more like a 40 minute wait, I don't know why she told you 20." We had kids with us and we waited in the hot, hot sun. It was tough. Finally the bus came and we had the same tour guide. I told her we waited for 40 minutes. She got on the loudspeaker and announced again that you shouldn't have to wait more than 20 minutes and if you do wait longer to call the company. The rest of the tour we stayed on the bus. We felt it was the only way to get the value of the money we had spent. It is a nice bus tour. Basically the same as the other open top tours that I've done before. But I won't use this company again. I'll use one that runs busses more regularly so we don't have to wait forever. This tour operation felt kind of amateur, except for the tour guide who was professional overall, yet she needs to get her message aligned with her company about wait times. read more

Rude driver/tour guide. He yelled at passengers for not getting back to the bus on time after he moved the bus from where he told us he'd be, and they WERE on time. He didn't accompany the group like other guides did on the twilight monument tour, leaving us searching in the dark for monuments like the Vietnam Memorial. Then he announced we all had to quit the tour and sent us back on different busses. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I WASTED MY MONEY ON THIS TOUR. Bus number 207 on Wednesday July 26th. One star is generous. I'd rather give him negative five stars. Ruined my visit to DC. read more

The worse bus out of the many around DC. Still waiting at the Lincoln Memorial watching the 9th Old Town Trolley and the 7th BigBus pass by, while being told by the customer service staff by phone that it will be another 10 minutes for the third time. Told that the app is not tracking the buses well on the first call (app said 66-76 minutes, customer service said 10 minutes), buses have to be rerouted due to lane closures on the second call (app showing only 1 bus active on route). Purchased tickets through Groupon. Picked up bus at air and space museum. Got off by Lincoln Memorial to get shuttle to Arlington cemetery. Waited over 30+ mins to finally get a Lyft. Once done at Arlington, caught the shuttle and all went a bit better. Seems like the competitors have more shuttles and make their rounds much more frequently. Our guides were excellent, but would go with one of the competitors if I was to do a tour bus again. So hate to leave poor reviews but hopefully these problems can get fixed. read more

We bought tickets for the DC Trails hop on hop off bus while traveling in DC. It was a very convenient and easy was to see the sights and stop at places we wanted to. The buses are comfortable, and 3 out of 4 tour guides were both knowledgeable, and spoke clearly. Their double-decker air conditioned buses are great for getting the guided tour on sunny days. The open-top buses are of course perfect for kids, and an all-round great view, while getting your hair blown around. Couple of issues that travelers should be aware of- they don't call out the time when you deboard. You have to check your watch at every stop so you know when to expect the next bus, otherwise you might be waiting up to 30 minutes. There is no published schedule. In some areas, like the Lincoln Memorial, there is no clear marking of where the stop is. You get dropped off in one spot, picked up around the corner. No DC Trails sign on either. All this not withstanding, the service was what we needed, and with the Groupon we used, also at a price that made sense. read more

The drivers we encountered on these buses were friendly and kind. Only two, out of the 5 tour guides we experienced seemed ever remotely interested in being there and we spent most of our one day in DC waiting for these buses to come, while standing in the pouring rain, watching as other buses regularly went past us. They say 20-30 minutes between buses, which in itself is impossible to gauge and I can tell you it's just not true. To cap it off, we were dropped at a location that was closed, which was confusing to us because they literally skipped stops between where they picked us up (70 minutes later) and where we wanted to go (the White House visitor center). Didn't they know it was closed? We were dropped there and after a frustrating day of guesstimating when busses would arrive, we were done. We missed half of the city and wouldn't use this company again. Don't buy the groupon, it's not worth the frustration. read more

This is absolutely the worst experience I've EVER had with a sight seeing tour company. It started out good, the live tour guide was knowledgeable & pleasant. We got off at the African Museum. The next hop on took us go Madame Tussads, was told the last bus came at 5:20. We went to the appropriate stop to catch the last bus. IT NEVER CAME! I called dispatch 2xs the first time he said a bus would be there in 15 to 20 minutes. AFTER WAITING 45 mins, I called the 2nd time only to have the dispatcher say there isn't a bus coming! IT NEVER CAME! We ended up taking a taxi back to our vehicle. This was the worst company EVER! read more

The Best Tour In Town. We certainly enjoyed Washington a lot more because of DC Trails. Busses go everywhere! You can stay as long as you like at each site. I signed up with the Hop on Hop off tours. The promotion information said the busses are about 10 minutes apart. First stop, we waited 20 minutes. Second stop we were lucky and only waited 5. Twilight Tour guide Dre (hope I spelled name correctly) was very good! Although a shorter tour than the site listed I believe this was due to the very cold night so I am guessing that is why. Probably it would be better to start the tour earlier this time of year. I also think since it was a very large group the guide should be provided with a microphone off the bus as well as on. However, he was very knowledgeable and did a great job so because I am reviewing him and not DC Trails he gets a 5and hopefully they will provide a mic so he does not need to scream and lose his voice as was stated on the tour. I did not like the hop on hop of tour but would recommend folks to book the Twilight tour and try to get Dre. read more
