THE ABSOLUTE WORST TOUR i have experienced!!!! We get there at 9, the lady is more concerned with chatting with coworker then helping us, bus does not come until 945 and we dont leave until after 10!! We get out of capital building at 1130, bus still has not arrived at 1215 so we have to walk. Get to a location and told wrong place to wait so qasted another hour. All in all, we did not get to see city and wasted over $100. Thanks a lot!! Definitely will never pick you again read more

7/11/2017 DC Trails - Hop on Off Bus Tour - Yelp Clean buses with a bathroom and a great learning experience! Can you say more if you have kids? The overall tour was great. You go to all of the highlights of the city and the tour guides are very knowledgeable. Joe was our guide and he was awesome. That man deserves a raise and an even bigger tip than we left him. He was funny, pleasant and had many anecdotes. His was so very knowledgeable and had many funny tales about the city, all of the people that lived there and its involved history. He talked for the whole tour around the city, gave us as much history as we have ever heard and even told us when to click for the best pictures. If you get on and off at different stops, you will find out they tailor the jokes and stories to those on the bus. Don't forget to tip! Joe and his crew are worth every penny. The only things to keep in mind are that the tour is quicker in the morning because traffic gets heavier as the day goes on and that the bus cannot stop for pictures. Parking is expensive so think about taking the Metro in. read more

I can't say enough about what a great experience we had with DC Trails. The drivers and tour guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. A few times we were on the bus by ourselves in the morning and they were quick to personalize our tour. When it started raining they handed out free ponchos to everyone on the bus. I would have given 5 stars however, the busses only come around every 30 minutes. This made it difficult to get to everything we wanted to see. We sat at one point for a long time watching multiple trollies and other bus lines come and go. More busses = 5 stars. However, it is a great value for the money. On a side note, when we went to Arlington we were shuttled on a different bus. We noticed other bus companies delivered right to Arlington without a separate bus. Something to keep in mind when planning your visit. read more

I only gave it one star since I couldn't post a review without one. We have gone to two stops and at each one we have waited over an hour. We have called numerous times. You get transferred and put on hold. The app is not accurate. We've see numerous other tour buses come and go. It really gives you no time to see the attractions. Awful. read more

Booked DC Trails for a tour to Mount Vernon and had a great experience. Our driver, Charles, was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of history on the development of Washington DC, Old Alexandria and Arlington. Part of the tour to Mount Vernon included a tour through Old Alexandria. We were shown George Washington's townhouse, Robert E. Lee's childhood home and other notable places. There were two tour times offered, 10 AM and 12 PM. I would suggest the earlier time offered. Charles gave us the option of staying at Mount Vernon until the second return time since we were part of the earlier group. That provided us 5 hours to explore, which is needed as there is a lot to see. read more

We bought Groupons for this tour. We are so glad we went! Most bus stops were clearly marked. We did need to call DC Tours once to be sure we were waiting at the correct stop (we were since the address on the printed map was correct, though there was no sign.) Our bus wait times varied, but only one was close to half an hour. Others were very prompt. The tour guides and drivers were friendly and helpful, and seeing DC from the top of the bus was a new and fun experience for us. We had an amazing day. read more

My son and I finished our last night with DC Trails Evening Twilight tour. We couldn't have asked for a better guide and storyteller than Henry. You know a great storyteller when you can be emotionally moved from the passion you hear through his words. He has a gift, he is a gift. DC Trails, Thank You. read more

This was such a bad experience. It was very difficult to plan around the two active bus times. We were waiting at a stop and even called to confirm that the bus was coming there next. 20 minuets later there still was no bus. We called again and she said that the bus had passed and went on to the next stop....SKIPPING our stop. She told us we would have to wait another 30 min. You are much better of getting a cab or just walking or riding a bike. I would give this zero stars if I could. read more

Our experience with this service could be best described as inconsistent. We had a 48 hour pass and the first day started well, our first guide Henry was funny and informative. We hopped on and off a couple times with short waits and no issues. Then we got off near Chinatown, had lunch right by the hop off point. We watched three DC Trails buses go by that stop in rapid succession from the restaurant window. An hour later we finished eating and went to the stop, having seen no more buses during lunch. And there we waited, with others who had been there longer, for about 40 minutes. I thcalled the DC Trails number and asked when the bus would be coming to that stop. I was transferred to someone who told me 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, my husband and I went to the National Portrait Gallery nearby, the other folks waiting having called for an Über and/or taken advantage of the nearby Metro station. An hour after this, we came out of the museum to see (and finally catch) the bus. To be fair, we learned later that there was a unscheduled protest going on that day at which 575 people were arrested, and it impacted traffic. It didn't seem to impact the other bus services as much however (different routes? More buses?). Our second day experience was emphatically better, we had another excellent and informative guide (Kevin, I think?). The hop off at the Lincoln Memorial included an opportunity to take a very comfortable commuter van to Arlington National Cemetery in VA. All the buses were punctual the second day. If I were to use this (or any) hop on/off service again, I will likely hop off less. Can't miss a bus you're already on. read more

This is a terrible service. We waited at two different bus stop for over 40 minutes each time while we watched big bus service make multiple pick ups. The app doesn't show you when the bus will arrive either. Don't use this service! read more

I had the worst experience with your company. I downloaded the app so we can make sure we were waiting at the correct stops. Well at 4pm we(at total of 8) were waiting at stop 19 and nothing. My husband called a 202 which is on your app and spoke to a lady name Nicole. My husband told her we have been waiting for an hour and she told us to wait 45 more minutes. My husband didn't like that answer. So he asked to speak to a manager. Nicole gave my husband another number 703 number. When spoke to the person he told him that on Tuesday they don't stop at stop 19. How were we suppose to know this? So we had to walk to stop 16 to be picked up. My parents were with us and they were visiting from California. My dads knees are really bad and because of the lack of communication he had to walk around. Earlier that day we got dropped off on stop 14 at the Jefferson than we waited an hour and decided to get on the bus that we had to pay a $1 to ride it. This was our third time buying tickets and doing the dc bus tours. The other two times we loved dc tours but this time we had the worst experience. I was very embarrassed and irritated because my my parents didn't have a good experience. They wouldn't even give me free bus passes or reimbursement because I got them the tickets through Groupon. read more

Bus goes to 22 stops. Guides are good. With Groupon, figured it was a good value. Just 3 very disappointing things. 1. At FDR memorial, not clearly marked. Called to ask if I should be at the corner of West basin and Ohio. Was yold yes, at the corner. Kids and I were standing in wrong place, so when bus passed us, we ran after it anout half block away. Was right next to bus and still left us. 2. Was told that due to 4th activities, bus would not be stopping near the capitol. Took lyft to get there from air and space museum as we had a tour to get too. When we left, called dc trails to find closest pickip space tp be told the bus did stop at 2 amd 3 near the capitol. 3. Told bus was 15 minutes but 25 minutes. read more

Do not buy this tour. There are plenty of other really really good tours but this is not one. Their guidesdo not have a lot to offer, no fun facts it all, they do not speak clearly and they speak very quickly when they decide to share information. I'm not sure what the hurry is when speaking quickly because they offer so very little. The buses arrive very infrequently and Not pull out the schedule of every 20 minutes as advertised. Their pick ups are not clearly marked and they do not wait very long before heading off if you're more than 5 feet away. We got the offer on Groupon and thought with the discounted baby, but it was the fourth time today we only use the bus one time because I spent more time waiting and just walking to the next stop - only to continue waiting. Huge waste of money. Even with Groupon discount we paid $80 for a four city Block ride with little info from your guide. I recommend taking the "big B bus" tour instead because three of those have come by while I was writing this review. read more

Bought this tour on the Groupon, and what a horrible experience. We wasted 2.5 hours waiting on one stop: at first we were waiting on the bus, then we were stuck on the bus in front of capital for about an hour. 2.5 hours does not seem like a lot, but when you only have 2 days in dc, 2.5 hours on waiting is a lot of time... very disappointing read more

We traveled to DC in October over fall break for our kiddos. We booked a DC trails hop on/off tour. I had some concerns ahead of time after reading the reviews. I spoke with a woman who reassured me that our trip would be fine and it was more than fine! It was exactly what we wanted. A bus tour of the top sites of DC that we could get off or on to. We got on the bus at stop 8 which was near our parking garage by the federal triangle. The stop was clearly marked with a DC trails sign. We were entertained by our wonderful tour guide who was so knowledgeable about the city and the local spots. Our driver was AMAZING! We bought tickets on Groupon for a great deal. Absolutely a great time and perfect for our large family of 8 with small kids who can not walk the DC area to appreciate all the sites! read more

OMG!!! We just got off of a D.C. Trails bus, and it's 95 degrees and the bus had no air conditioner. COME ON PEOPLE! Common sense would tell the driver to pull the bus out of service and render it disabled. But NO! He kept driving. It was towards the end of a much awaited tour with our dear friends. When we boarded we were waaaay too tired and worn out to get off and try and find another bus. Honest to goodness, it was like a raging inferno onboard that bus, and the driver just kept going. He really did not care!!! People were passing out on the lower level and getting sick from the heat, and he was oblivious to it all. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! I will NEVER do D.C. Trails again, and I advise you to PLEASE... FIND ANOTHER BUS COMPANY!!! UPDATE: While I appreciate the polite reply from the D.C. Trails representative, it is extremely disheartening that the respondent did not acknowledge the brevity of this situation. TWO PEOPLE ON THE LOWER LEVEL PASSED OUT FROM THE HEAT ON THIS BUS. It was the end of the day, this was the last bus going around, so people had conceded to tough it out. Sitting on this bus was literally like sitting in an oven! I have taken over 10 tours of D.C. with various touring companies and I have never experienced anything as horrendous as this ride. The air conditioning had malfunctioned. The driver admitted that it was not working at all when I questioned him. He said he had asked about sidelining the bus, but was instructed keep driving. Please note: You could not open the lower windows. The upper deck was full. The lower deck was literally incinerating. Riders have a right to expect that a bus company operate habitable equipment. It didn't have to be cool, but it did have to be safe. The environment was NOT SAFE. There should be a point at which a company concedes that if an onboard temperature exceeds a certain degree, that the bus is pulled in for repair. It is incredulous to have the company representative diminish the brevity of a situation like this. Reader, even MORE than before, I encourage you to find a another tour bus company. It is evident from the D.C. Trails response that they are not at all concerned about customer safety. read more

We stumbled upon DC Trails because they are conveniently located at L'Enfant Plaza. The customer service at the booth where you buy tickets is terrible. No information or options provided. When we wanted to change to the 2 day pass it involved multiple calls and a visit to the office in person because the employees didn't know what to do. The actual tour, however, is informative. Tour guides are great. We didn't learn about the app until day 2. It was handy once we utilized it. The night tour was beautiful. Special shout out to Deon with the lightbulb umbrella. You are wonderful! read more

Tour guides are very knowledgeable and most love their jobs. We only had one guide that was unengaged with the guests. The app works great for finding pickup points. We also did the twilight tour. Henry K. was a great guide! Very engaging. We will definitely do it again! read more

More affordable than some of the other hop-on/hop-off tours but we spent a lot of time waiting for buses and would get annoyed watching 3 or 4 buses of the other companies drive by. I would guess that they were always on the longer end of the 20-30 minute interval between buses. We bought the 48 hour which includes the twilight tour but it wasn't communicated to us that you had to make reservations for that and so we were unable to use it. Bus staff were always pleasant and helpful and we learned some interesting facts while riding the loop. Would probably use again on a return trip but we also discussed looking into the other bus companies. read more

Very disrespectful tour guides. The buses take forever to arrive too and the pick up spot is at a very complicated location to find.

If I could leave a 0 I would. This place cost me over a 100$ for just 3 people. At first everything was great. But after a while, my family and I got kicked off 2 tour buses because they wouldn't accept my tickets. One person said that it was the wrong tour bus when clearly I had been using the same one for 2 days on the same bus. I WILL be speaking with the head of this company for ruining our family experience. And will NEVER use these guys again unless they do some serious re-hiring. read more

Used them on a whim during an Aug 2016 trip to downtown DC. I wish I had read the other reviews prior to using this company. Buses come once every HOUR or so, with no sense of punctuality. You waste most of your day watching other tour companies pass you every 5 minutes, while you're steaming wondering where your bus is as you burn daylight. Drop-off/pickup points are not labeled, and drivers may drop you off at one place, but pick you up at a different one. Final pickup is around 5:30pm ... FIVE-THIRTY, PM! EVEN ON WEEKENDS! So, given that you wait an hour before being picked up, then an hour in between each stop, you don't get to see much before your day is done. They try to say "your pass is good for 24 hours." But if you burned most of your time waiting on the bus on the first day, nighttime will eat up most of those hours and you won't have much time left if you are foolish enough to return the next day. Because the wait time is so long, each bus is PACKED like SARDINES when it finally does come, making movement inside the bus extremely difficult as people try to get on while others try to get off. (Throw in families with strollers and people coming from the top of the double-decker bus against the flow of angry people eager to get on, and you're in for a bad time with this company.) We were only able to actually ride the bus for two stops, because we got tired of waiting an hour after each one and decided to salvage the day by walking to nearby DC sights instead ... It was faster! Ultimately, we paid $100 for a family of three to ride 5 minutes to two downtown sights, while wasting three hours before, in-between, and after the two stops. A waste of money and time. I'd ask for a refund if I thought the company cared. (Side note: They don't.) There are SEVERAL other companies who appear to have routine pickups with short wait times at clearly-labeled stops with longer operating hours. Choose one of them. AVOID DC Trails at all costs. read more

We really enjoyed the Twilight Tour with Brittany as the guide. It started raining so they gave us free ponchos, had great jokes throughout the tour, and took us to all of the major memorials with time to get out and explore the White House and WW II, Lincoln, Marine, Vietnam, Korean War, and MLK memorials on our own. Saved us a lot of time, as we didn't need to go out and see them on other days. read more

The tour did not start off well. We sat at stop one for over an hour. After a brief discussion with the company we re-boarded and really began the tour. Our Guide Tamara Thomas was INCREDIBLE. She is the souls reason I am rating this 5 stars. Her knowledge was off the chart. The tour itself was impressive, you will learn more on this tour than you did in 12 years of public school. read more

We had the worse time trying to locate their bus stops. Initially we misread the map, but once we figured it out, we had three buses drive by us. This all happened about 10:30AM yesterday 8/8/18. At this point we gave up and walked to the Jefferson Memorial from the White House. We wanted to take this tour because it offered a night trip to the Iwo Jima Memorial. We decided it was in our best interests to purchase tickets from Big Bus Tours. They have a better Map and Signs at their bus stops! (Signs)! Do you homework before you use DC Trails buses. This is the worst tour experience ever. Sure it's no one's fault that it's hot and humid in July in DC but to not have air conditioning in a bus that has no windows is unacceptable. It's in fact not safe. It was entirely irresponsible to only replace the bus 3.5 hours into the tour and then take us back to the hotel in another bus that had no AC. We selected this tour because of the fact that it was entirely inside the bus to avoid the open sun and humid heat. How wrong we were. It was worse. No apology from the manager and no compensation. We will never recommend this tour. read more

DC Trails , was not just a tour bus that points out different historical buildings and monuments. It was an experience, our tour guide was knowledgeable , funny and passionate about American history . The night tour was the highlight of our trip . Henry gave us factual information that we don't always learn from our American History class. If you were born in the USA you will fall in love with your country. If you are visiting the USA you will understand our values of hard work, charity and sacrifice. My family of five (w/kids ages 4, 5 & 12) took the evening twilight tour. We all had a great time and covered more ground in 3 hours than we could've on our own in a day! Our tour guide DD was knowledgeable and funny. The tour was faced pace so wear sneakers or comfortable shoes, lots of walking at the stops. Got some great photos as the sun was setting on the capital. We packed drinks and snacks as most of the snack stands are closed by 8pm and the tour is around dinner time. A great experience! read more

To start off there were several stops that were closed because of protests and clean up from the Fourth of July. I don't mind that as many of the locations could be accessed by nearby stops with ease, however the list of closed stops was given on the first bus as 12,19 and 16. To start the day, we arrived at 8:45, got on the bus and made our ticket purchase right there. The first bus was supposed to leave at 9am (the bus I was on) and we pulled out at 9:40. We sat there with no indication as to what was happening or why we weren't leaving, but that started our day of riding much later then we intended to see the sights we wanted to see. Because of the closures, we got off at 18 and walked to 11. We sat at 11 for 45 minutes with a couple from PA and they finally left. We called 3 times about a bus and they sent a closed bus that stopped 3/4 down the street from us. The other couple mentioned that it was a private tour in the closed bus so we should be on the open top. When we called again, they said that was the bus and we should have gotten on it. Throughout the day we checked the app for the location of the busses, while they have a notice that the app wasn't working, throughout the day they had one bus on the map or two sitting at the station. We were told that the next bus was still another 20-30 minutes out after missing the closed bus and the app showed two busses at the depot. When the next bus arrived the top was completely full and we were told we needed to sit in the bottom. It was obvious that the A/C wasn't working and it was a sauna in there. The heat was excessive, no windows were open and there was no air moving. Rather deplorable condition to ride in with 101° heat index. My daughter and I got off at FDR and walked to the WWII Memorial and finally arrived at stop 18. We walked the path of the bus for about 20 minutes leading up to the stop and again sat at the stop for over 30 minutes finally making the decision to grab a cab back to our hotel at L'enfant Plaza (their home base). Checking the app, there were 2 busses sitting there behind their sales van. When we arrived, for the app not working, there were 2 busses sitting at the stop. We grabbed lunch at the mall food court and thought that maybe we would take a full round around with no stops. Since there were 2 there all day maybe we would just hop on. WRONG! We had to wait 40 minutes for a bus to arrive. When we got on, another bus pulled up behind us. We sat there for 35 minutes with a Third bus pulling up behind us then leaving empty before we went. While we were riding the circuit, we caught up to a bus in front of us that had run out of seats and our guide told the driver to wait we could pick up people, but the driver left and pulled around our bus to leave. Then when it came time to go to stop 11 the guide told the driver to skip it and change the route. The police vehicles hadn't moved and the stop was still open from where we were in the morning. Frustrating experience all day. The best part was when the guide told us that the free circulator could get closer to monuments then they could so we should consider riding that around the mall rather than waiting for them. This hop on hop off tour has a high rating but i don't understand the rating unless they paid to have the rating increased. The lack of busses running creating ridiculously long wait times, alternating of routes at will and blatant disregard for passengers when the bus in front was turning people away makes this one of the worst tours I have taken in any city I have been in. I have pics of us sitting at the home stop with the bus behind us sitting there as well. This seems like a poorly run operation and only care about collecting money rather than providing a quality service. When I complained to one of the staff at the ticket van she asked me to see my ticket then quickly pointed out the no refund policy. Avoid this service and use the Old Town Trolly or Big Bus instead. Saw plenty of those passing while we lost time waiting. read more

This was not only a horrible tour company, it was terrible company in general. We had the worst experience on this bus tour. The bus had no air conditioning and was a hot, stuffy inferno. I thought a wailing baby was about to have a heat stroke. The announcer was way too loud, a little brash, and the speakers were crackly. My family of 4 bought Groupons for the tour. We got on the bus at 10am on July 5th and they told us several stops were closed because they are cleaning up from the 4th of July festivities. This would have been a nice disclaimer to have been informed of before purchasing the tickets. We got off our first stop at the Air & Space museum and walked to the Capitol in the heat, toured it, and wish that when we came out we saw a DC Trails bus by the capitol (so they must have opened back up & not told us). Their app was completely useless in telling us when the next bus was coming. We walked (in the heat) back to the Air & Space museum and an employee there told us we had just missed a bus so it would be about 20 minutes. We stood in the heat for over an hour waiting for the next bus. In that time 5 Trolley Tour buses came & went, and multiple Big Bus tours (5-7). My husband called, I called, we kept getting the same response from all the employees...15-20 more minutes. They were obviously short staffed, or short on buses, or something on July 5th. I find it hard to believe this is the normal way they run things, based on the mostly positive reviews we've read. We decided that this was ruining a day of our vacation & we should just take a Lyft to the next stop, and called to ask for a refund and were told to email an address & it would take 72 hours to find out if we can get a refund. That's unacceptable. I didn't know whether to call Groupon, or go through DC Trails to get a refund. This is ruining a day of our vacation. Do yourself a favor...go with a different bus company if you decide to do a tour. read more

The destinations are great, but the buses do NOT run on a reliable schedule! Chose a different bus tour if you can. We waited over an hour at several locations. Time that could have been used seeing the various other destinations. Other bus tours had buses arriving every 15 minutes. Very disappointed with this service. I do not reccomend using them. read more

We were picked up at our hotel (Marriott Metro Center) by one bus that wasn't clearly marked. The valet guys knew so that helped, otherwise we might have missed it. This bus didn't feel air conditioned at all so thankfully we were only on long enough to meet up with the actual tour bus. The double decker bus we had for the tour was nice and cool. DeeDee was our tour guide. She was lovely!! Her information was knowledgeable, interesting, and often funny. We had the twilight tour and specifically chose this one because of the number of sights and stops compared to other night tours. It was worth it. After the MLK and Roosevelt stop we got back on the original bus to go back to the hotel. Again it was ridiculously hot. That would be my only complaint and the reason I didn't give 5 stars. read more

You'll watch 4 or 5 of the other tour companies' buses while you wait 45-50 mins for DC to show up. Take anyone other than these guys.

I, and my husband did the all day bus tour, after seeing a deal on Groupon. We stayed in Pentagon City, the bus picked us up right in front of the Metro station. (The hotel offered a shuttle to the Metro.) Our driver/tour guide was Charles. Excellent tour, from stopping at all the monuments, Arlington cemetery we saw JFK'S grave site, the changing of the guards by the tomb of the unknown, military statues, the white house and capital buildings, what an excellent day, and an excellent job Charles did! It was warm, but the bus was well air-conditioned. I highly recommend this tour! We saw so much, and did so much, we could never have done on our own. read more

Could Have Been Great, Tour Guide Ruined It! This night tour of DC is a great way to get an overview of the city, a feel where everything is located, a crash course on history, and a quick visit to every major monument. The city is glorious at night, and I've recommended to everyone that they do this on their first evening in town. But not with this company. Our tour guide was horrible. He gave us a 30 second, so-fast-you-could-hardly-understand-him overview of each monument. But then he would stop and say, "Now for the real story." This was followed by horrible, founding-fathers-bashing tales of deceit, how the Scottish Rite and Free Masons directed everything the Founders did, how the very layout of the city proved how these organizations were the original overlords of the nation, and how everything -- from the dates of construction, the stones used, the alignment of trees, the panes of glass, the layout of the streets, the length x width of the pools and fountains, you name it -- could all be reduced to the number 13. And, of course, the pyramid at the top of the Washington Monument is a demonic symbol which may or may not be why the foundering fathers refused a stone for its construction that had been donated by the Pope. Sigh. These idiotic lectures went on and on while we stood there in 16 degree temperatures waiting to return to the bus. Everyone was stamping and rubbing their hands, kids were whimpering, it was awful. read more

Overall, we had a good experience with this service. But we didn't really use the hop on/hop off aspect. We took one full loop in the morning. This tour was great. I highly recommend the 48 hr tour option. Only downside is the very long wait time between buses so don't plan on hopping on and off a lot or you will waste a lot of time. The second day our tour guides were funny and full of great trivia. Buses were clean and comfortable. If weather permits definitely take the open double-decker for the best photos. read more

I was disappointed with my experience. 1. Very few buses compared with other companies. Read through the reviews--you'll end up waiting more and seeing less than with other bus tours. 2. Commentators were sometimes difficult to understand, due to English dialect issues. 3. Mismanaged overemphasis: During the route south of the Tidal Basin (which includes FDR and MLK Memorials), our Commentator spent 12 minutes talking about MLK yet a mere 30 seconds about FDR (4-time President Elect who served as our Commander in Chief for 16 years--one of the most influential Americans ever). 4. Focus/continuity: Commentators collectively mentioned the African American Historical Museum and its 24 September grand opening FIVE TIMES. This is DC--I would prefer a more diverse enrichment of American culture. read more
