What a fun place! I went to a cabaret at dbar this fall and it was such a blast, made all the better by the great venue, kind staff, and delicious food. The outside of the restaurant-turned-club does look like its dive bar predecessor, but the inside is dark, classy, and cozy - with a good dose of flashy lights and bling after dark. Since it was a special event as part of the "dbarLIVE" series, we had to make reservations a few weeks in advance on Open Table -- no cover or minimum for the reservation. We had a table of 6 that eventually crammed 8 together in a booth right next to the stage and bar areas. I worried we'd be blasted by the speakers and lights, but the acoustics were robust but well balanced. Our server was great and had good recommendations for drinks and food. Both menus have a ton of options without being too overwhelming. I was especially impressed by how the staff expertly wove in and out of the tables and remained attentive during the performances. I am a slow drinker so I just got The Saint, which I would definitely recommend even though I don't usually get whiskey-based cocktails. (The Tall Man, who does love whiskey, also enjoyed it.) I had already eaten dinner, so I shared the Vietnamese fries and tuna ceviche with a friend. The fries did not quite hit home for me. I enjoy all of those flavors individually, but it ended up being too heavy with the sauces, and the fries got soggy in a way that wasn't that pleasant. (I do like poutine, so go figure.) I really enjoyed the freshness, flavors, and texture combinations of the ceviche, though. The winner of the night was the lemon tart by far -- smoky torched gooey meringue on a perfectly tart lemon filling and biscuit base. Definitely full of gluten and dairy but very worth the indulgence! I'd love to come back for a regular dinner here and would definitely return for a special event too. The food is here is like putting lipstick on a pig. Looks fancy- sounds fancy- mediocre at best. We barely ate any of the tuna. The fish was room temperature. The crab cake was decent but the picture attached is how much you get for $18. Super underwhelmed by the whole meal. I wish they would focus more on flavor and less on presentation. Had a nice Tuesday night dinner within the graffiti-laden shipping container, starting with a bread basket and herbed butter ($1/pp) and the Thai chili calamari ($14) - super crunchy, delectable sauce, but we're talking maybe 10 bites of squid. A small plate made smaller if you're splitting as an app. Entrees were bangin: wife loved her dbar burger ($19), cooked to a perfect medium-rare. I went tuna and salmon poke bowl and as told they were out of tuna. Bummer, but our awesome server Cindy did mentioned the kitchen upped the salmon and dropped the price ($28 to $25). LFG! Final product featured a great balance of sticky rice, avocado, carrot, edamame and sesame-soy dressing, but was overrun with spicy aioli. Definitely suggest requesting it on the side. This establishment is a restaurant by day, but a gay bar/nightclub at night. I was skeptical when I saw people reviewing that the food is good here so I decided to give it a try. They have a personal lot so parking isn't an issue. I went here on a Sunday with a friend for brunch. There's a bar facing you as soon as you enter the door. They have a moderately sized dining room with tables in the middle and against the walls. Their restroom is gender friendly with a sign saying "Whichever." In the background, they played a lot of "throw-backs" from the 80's and 90's which was interesting, The Food: The first thing that we ordered was the classic orange mimosa which we enjoyed. We wanted to get this Sunday Brunch on the road! For food, we ordered the Huevos Rancheros Caliente (scrambled eggs, peppers, and corn tortillas) and the Dorchester Brunch Grinder (a andwich made up of sausage, bacon, braised pork shoulder, fried egg, croissants as the buns, and hollandaise serve) both served with Home fries. I loved my sandwich! It came with a big beef patty with braised pork and bacon on top. My only complaints are that since they used crossiants as the buns, my sandwich quickly fell apart and the sandwich was a bit on the oily side. My friend enjoyed her Huevos Rancheros Caliente, but I thought it was just okay, I probably would have liked it more if it came with sausage or some kind of meat. The Service: Our server was Jamorey and he was pretty good with getting our drink and food orders in quickly and checked on us often. I appreciated that he came up to us twice telling us that the food was on its way, when the food was taking a little long. *COVID Influenced review* The menu I had found on Yelp/online prior to visiting was not the current menu. Due to covid, there is a much more limited menu that had very few items I was interested in trying. I started with a passionfruit blood orange cosmo; it was decent but it tasted more like orange than blood orange. I settled in the goat cheese spread to start, and it was sold out. I ordered the boston chop fried chicken sandwich, and it almost tasted like it was fried in the same oil as fish. When I went for a second round cosmo, they were out of the mix -- and made a different, also okay beverage. The staff did give us a nice ice cream sandwich to sweeten a pretty disappointing evening. I had been so excited to try this place with its heated outdoor patio and greenhouse dining. We ate here for Dine Out Boston and the steak tips entree was very disappointing. It tasted pretty solid; however, the portion they gave was 6 small steak tips with mashed potatoes and boiled broccoli (not worth the $41/person). The scallion pancakes were pretty good, along with the chicken under the brick entree. The vibes were dim and nice unexpected from the outside which was cool! From the second you walk in, you are greeted with positivity from your host/hostess. The wait staff is engaging and accommodating. The restaurant is privately quiet but also social. The outside dining is a gorgeous garden area as well as sections created out of shipping containers. Decorated in such a fun way. The food is so delicious. The one thing you can be absolutely right about is that it won't be right. Yes mistakes happen once twice hell even three times but we are at 6 plus now. This worthy destination is a bit hard to get to; located in a commercial portion of Dorchester; but worth the trip. First of all it has an excellent outdoor seating area designed for cold weather, warm weather or rain. A series of roofs and siding keep out rain, wind and the sun, with a good combo of heat lamps for the cold weather. It is nicely decorated making it a great place to hang. Dear also has a decent amount of dedicated parking. Service is great; prompt; friendly; not intrusive. Menu is interesting; a combo of unique and twists on standard items. Food is well executed. Used to be a huge fan but it hasn't been good recently. Chicken sandwich was undercooked last time I went, one half of it was completely raw. When I got to the raw part, I told the server. Wasn't even trying to get a refund or a new sandwich, but wanted to give the kitchen a heads up. We've been going to dBar almost since it opened. We love the food and excellent service. We went the other night and had a wonderful server Rachel who was so attentive as well as personable. We really enjoy the outside patio in the milder weather. A true oasis. Our only complaint is that it is SO dark in the restaurant. We saw pretty much everyone either using the lights on their phones or using the one candle on the table just to read the menu. Forget about seeing your food once it arrived. Dinners here are amazing. The chicken under a brick is my absolute favorite. They use organic chicken, which may sound crazy, but there is a huge taste difference. I've come here for dinner a few times, but have never come for brunch, until today. The brunch is just as good as the dinners. I had the eggs Benedict which also incorporates asparagus, which was a nice touch. The Dorchester brunch grinder is very good as well. It does come with a lot of shredded pork on it, a lot of meat in general once you factor in the bacon and sausage as well. I stopped by Dbar last night after reading favorable reviews here on Yelp. Per another reviewers recommendation, I had the "Chicken Under a Brick", accompanied of course by my favorite gin martini. The chicken was perfectly prepared, cooked crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. It came with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The asparagus was great (but really, how can you screw up asparagus?) but the mashed potatoes could have used a little something more. I'm not sure if they were just whipped too fine, but they seemed to lack the typical density that mashed potatoes are known for. The portion size was spot on. My martini was well balanced, decently sized, and disappeared quickly. The ambiance at dbar is hip and cozy. The colorful wall sconces and other ambient lighting offer a great contrast against the dark backdrop. Also, I don't recall seeing a television in the place. That made me happy. read more
