Whoever Dawson is, please tell Dawson that Arty is remarkable! We dined here on our first night in Sacramento. I knew that I wanted to try it based on the menu that I downloaded before driving up. My original intention was to make a reservation on OpenTable, but we missed the slots. We had been out doing a scavenger hunt and museum so I my sure that we'd be able to be casual. This is a true steakhouse. I am happy to say that they accepted me in a more casual attire. Our hostess was very nice and sat us, at the request of my girlfriend to be away from others when dining indoors. The ambiance is classic steakhouse with lots of dark wood and leather. I recall thinking to myself, who started the traditional high-end steakhouse motif that many of us have become familiar with? On another note, we had some great bread and it was just what we needed after so much walking during the day. Our server was Arty and he was fantastic. His service and suggested pairings enhanced our experience. He went above and beyond in ensuring that we enjoyed every aspect of our dining experience at Dawson's. When my girlfriend didn't like her initial drink, he took it back to have it re-mixed. I had Mary's All Natural chicken and the most delicious mushrooms that I've ever had. Arty said that they were great and he was spot on. My girlfriend had the filet and she loved it. We both loved our food and dessert but Arty's candor and service made me want to order dessert (make sure to order the carrot cake. It's the the best. ) before I had even eaten dinner. Everything was outstanding. Before our check came, we were trying to decide if we were going to charge it to our room, or use my credit card. Without asking, Arty went to the front desk and asked on our behalf if there was a better method of us getting our points under my World of Hyatt number. He returned with the information and although he didn't have to go, he did. Not only to help us, but to be informed if any others have the same question. His service is special and I hope the management recognizes him for it. Great steak house!! We were staying at the Hyatt for a conference and decided to try Dawson's. We had to wait 20 min but we're already at the lobby bar networking so the wait was not an inconvenience. I highly recommend getting a reservation if you don't want to wait. The service is IMPECCABLE- no lie! From the greeters, to the servers and especially ARBY our waiter- can't say enough. Two of us had the spice crusted top sirloin with bearnaise sauce, so good! Valet was very convenient, place was empty but felt very welcoming. Greeted by a friendly host who sat us at a nice comfortable booth in back. The waiter was very knowledgeable and accommodating. A host or hostess is responsible for welcoming guests, seating them, and managing reservations or waiting lists. They are the first point of contact for diners and play a key role in setting the tone for the dining experience. Unfortunately that was not the case with the Hostess we encountered. When we arrived I indicated two for dinner--next sentence from her was "do you have a reservation?" That came across smug--not a Good evening or even a Welcome to Dawson's. I asked if a reservation was required and as a guest at the Hyatt we could easily have made a reservation and returned another more convenient time for this restaurant or at a more manageable time for this Hostess. However, we were told we can wait for a moment. So I found a side table we could sit until our Hostess could seat us. She never offered us a glass of water, but fortunately a waiter brought us water and asked if we would like a drink. Eventually our Hostess seated us with an apology for our having to wait. I paid close attention to the number of numerous tables vacant and available; especially the number of tables vacant around where we were seated and how long they remained vacant (40 minutes). Interesting? Still it seems not having a reservation was frowned upon. It felt awkward. But my wife and I were tired so we stayed. I cannot attest to the food as by now I had loss my appetite. But still I only ordered a small garden salad since I was seating at their table and we ordered drinks. We chose a table over the discomfort of bar chairs. I asked our waiter for a box, but ended up tossing the salad in the garbage outside Dawson's not wanting to make a scene. Our Waiter was super good professionally and more helpful and treated us with dignity. We ordered a couple of drinks from the Bar . The drinks were well prepared. Again the Waiter was excellent. Husband and I are often in Sacramento for business so it's convenient for us to have dinner at Dawson's since we stay at the hotel. Always love the service and Caesars salad. Deserts are amazing as well. However, the ribeyes over the past 2 -3 years have often been chewy, and gristly. Like they switched to a lower grade, low-marbled beef hoping nobody would notice. We noticed and have both avoided ordering steak the last few visits, which is unfortunate because we want steak!!! We'll be back again early June to try the 24 oz aged rib steak to see if that's better. They should consider another supplier for their ribeyes. $67 for 14 oz should be better than what is offered. This is our first time at Dawsons. We frequent Morton's, High Steaks, Ruth Chris, echo and rig and even Coqueta in Yountville. We had 6pm reservations on a Friday for our anniversary. I don't know if the receptionist is new but he took a little while to sit us considering only one table is occupied and we had reservations. Mind you...I know we We're not wearing dinner jackets but we we're not in shorts and we were even wearing slacks and dress shirts. He was having a discussion with someone as to where to sit us and it was not a good start to the dinner experience We had a bottle of wine and it was great. We picked a California merlot mix Our server was nice but when he brought the wrong salad - he took it back and gave us the one we ordered. We've been in high end restaurants that when the server makes a mistake like that they would just leave it and bring the right one. What was he going to do with that? Bring it to another table The Dawson salad was tasty. A little too dressed for me but it was fine The carrots and onions as garnish/side for the ribeye was excellent The cook on the pork was on the raw side. First time here was for Father's Day and then again this past weekend for my husband's birthday. Fine dining with white tablecloths and an amazing staff is what you get. Fortunately it's off the lobby of our go to stay while in Sacramento, The Hyatt Regency Downtown on L Street. John was our server and was attentive to every detail, as was the staff in general. Caesar salad and crab cakes to start. My wife had the special, roasted halibut with polenta in a poblano cream sauce. Delicious. Finally getting to check out Dawson's and they did not disappoint! Went on a double date featuring the Dine Downtown menu on a Sunday evening. We were immediately greeted at the door and sat down. Service was impeccable. It was not as busy inside and we had a server with us most of our night. For the food.... As mentioned we came here for the Dine Downtown menu but also picked off their regular menu because why not?! For starters we split the Crab Cakes and Scallops. Both fresh and delightful. Not quite enough for 4 but it was plenty considering the amount of food we got to go with it. For the 1st course I went with Nueske Bacon & Frisee Salad. Comes with a poach egg, Goat cheese and a bacon& sherry vinaigrette. I really enjoyed it. light and packed with flavors. for my 2nd course I had to go with the House Dry Aged New York Strip. Served with roasted baby carrots and heirloom marble potato's. I got it medium rare and it was cooked to perfections. Loved the roast on the carrots as well. The 3rd and final course was a Pineapple Upside Down Cheesecake and this did not disappoint. If you're a lover of pineapple and cheesecake. Boom. just combine both! We miss this yearly event , going to different restaurants to taste good food . 3 course set dinner for relatively affordable price even at $$$ restaurant such as Dawson's steakhouse. Dawson's Steakhouse is located inside the Hyatt Regency in the heart of downtown Sacramento. The place is pretty decent and located next to the checkin lobby. I had potato soup, steak and coconut pineapple upside down cake. The cake was just a little sweeter than I want but the appetizer (soup) and the entree was delicious. Honestly i can say it's been over a decade since I've been to this spot. Usually I don't patronize hotel restaurants, especially one's in the city that I live in. With that said, Dawson's provided a memorable experience and first class food worthy of a repeat visit. We attended a special event which reserved the entire restaurant this night. Attendee's gathered at 6:30 for drinks and small appetizers in the bar area. My wife had the Jameson and Ginger (we just got back from Ireland a few months ago) and I wanted a red wine to compliment our steak meal. I asked for a Malbec, and they had one albeit not from the Mendoza, Argentina region. Don't all Malbec's come from Mendoza? I guess not... Servers were great despite the crush of orders that they were taking. My Meal consisted of a shrimp cocktail, Herb Crusted Diver Scallop, the Delmonico Steak, and a Carmelized Milk Chocolate Bar for dessert. The Shrimp cocktail had 4 good size Maple Bourbon Roasted Shrimps with a house made Cocktail Sauce. My entree , the Delmonico Steak had a Creamed Tuscan Kale, Garnet Yam Puree with Urfa Chill, and a Chipolte Demi-Glace. For dessert the Chocolate Milk Bar had a Dark Chocolate Shell, Milk Chocolate Mousse, Salted Peanut and Coco Nib Caramel and Passionfruit Sauce. Dawson is real upscale according to the price the atmosphere was quiet. The server was really knowledgeable about the menu and about the steaks. Most of the staff were very friendly. The host to me was a little uncooperative considering how empty the restaurant was at the time. Besides that the steak was good the mashed potatoes were very good. I was disappointed with my sole dining experience at Dawson's. It was unusually difficult to make a reservation because I was transferred several times and the line dropped twice. OK, that can happen. When my party arrived, we were not promptly greeted. We stood at the check-in waiting for at least 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged our presence. Once a hostess did arrive to greet us, we were seated. This slow start was a harbinger of the slow service we were going to receive. Our service during our visit was slow. It wasn't super slow but it was noticeably slow. Our waiter and the other staff who served us were friendly and they did a good job at the table. They just weren't attentive enough. I sampled the entrees and side dishes of everyone in our party of 5. All were good but none were outstanding. This would be a four-star review based on the food alone. I'd like to try Dawson's one more time in case this was an "off" night. If it was, I'll update my review. Based on my one dining experience, I can't recommend Dawson's. For the type of restaurant this is and the prices for its food and beverages, I would recommend going to the nearby Morton's. read more

A friend is visiting from Germany, and he asked if we could get Prime Rib, since it's a very rare offering in Germany. After visiting YELP for help, we chose Dawson's based on everyone's Prime Rib feedback. The atmosphere is very classy (too bright to be romantic) and thank goodness hasn't succumbed to the new design trend of making every. single. surface. a hard surface, which equals loud, loud, loud. We could actually talked to each other without shouting across the table. Service was impeccable. Doting enough to to not want for anything but discreet enough that we didn't notice the doting. The food was perfectly cooked and delicious. We both had Prime Rib - cooked "as the chef recommends". Beautiful brown edges and bright center. The Italian wine (a special - from Tuscan region) was spectacular. We added fries and brussels sprouts as our sides. Honestly, we could have just had one, large side. For dessert we shared the Key Lime and the Malted Chocolate (I think that's what it's called). Again, divine! Go - you won't regret the $$$$ but memorable dinner. read more

They didn't have any tables available, super busy, but we were able to get a seat at the bar as it was first come first served. Still able to order food of course so we didn't mind. First off the convenience of having a steakhouse in the hotel is awesome, place was clean, ambience perfect. We were served pretty fast considering they were busy, our bartender was always checking in on us. Food was great, I had the filet with the red wine Demi glacé, cooked perfectly well done and I loved the sauce on the side. I had a loaded baked potato for a side, super good. My wife had the Pork Chop with the chimichurri sauce, she loved it. For her sides she had the Brussel sprouts and garlic tator tots. All the food was great, service on point. Some consider that normal for a steakhouse, just don't go in a hurry ;) Finally, the ambiance is ok, but again, if you have $100 items on your menu, I expect to be wowed and wasn't. Giving 5 stars just for the valet (although the food was good too). We made a reservation during Sac restaurant week and were having difficulties finding parking. I would definitely recommend coming early if you have a reservation in order to find parking. Luckily the people at the valet station were willing to fit our car so we could make our reservation. They were so nice and even helped us figure out a car problem. The restaurant is located within the hotel. The servers were nice and the food was great. Delicious soup, salad, and the steak was very tender. It is a very classy setting so I would recommending dressing up. Great place for dates. read more

Dawson's is one of the higher end restaurants/steakhouses in downtown Sacramento, located inside the Hyatt Regency. I've been here twice so far, most recently for Dine Downtown 2019. During Dine Downtown (Restaurant Week), a 3 course meal is offered for $35. 1st course - Slow Roasted Pork Belly - this was melt -in-your-mouth delicious! Fatty and so tasty! This was the best dish of the entire evening. Definitely choose this over the trout. The Smoked Trout Rillette was okay. The trout is cut up and spread over a crunchy bread and topped with roe. Although a little fancier, it reminded me of tuna spread, which didn't quite get me too excited. 2nd course - Pan Seared Striped Bass - This dish was pretty good, but we were expecting a little bit more from the bass. We were expecting a bigger, meatier, filet type of bass, but instead, the bass was small, skinny, and just the side of the fish. At least it was tender, and the fennel sauce topped it nicely. There were two mussels and two clams, as well as some Yukon potatoes in the dish, which were all really good. I didn't get to try the Vietnamese skirt steak, but after seeing the pictures and trying the bass, I wish I did. 3rd course - really really enjoyed the Coconut Pineapple Pavlova. It was extremely tasty, with tropical flavors of passion fruit, pineapple, and a little bit of coconut. It has a creamy texture and is served over a soft cracker, similar to a macaron. The chocolate chunk chess pie was good, especially with the bourbon cinnamon whipped topping. The pie has an oatmeal cookie crust and comes with a dash of chocolate. Other than the food, our service was just OK. Although our server was a nice person when he was around, he tended to disappear for a long periods of time and was not too attentive. He never brought us complementary bread to start, we had to ask two other servers for bread, then at the end, he took away the bread when I still wanted to eat some. I saw other servers that were serving tables around us and they seemed very attentive to their tables. Also, although we had reservations, when we arrived, we still had to wait almost 20 minutes. I would highly recommend this five course dinner to anyone that can afford it. :p Every single course was truly amazing. 1st course - Cured Hamachi paired with Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc. Hamachi was ridiculously good and paired so nicely with the wine. 2nd course - Sweet Corn Agnolotti paired with Cakebread Chardonnay. Amazing. 3rd course - Wild Boar Pave with Cakebread Merlot. So delicious. 4th course - Crusted Hanger Steak with Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon. Again Amazing. 5th course - Apricot Upside Down Cake with Old Soul Coffee. Absolutely delicious and intimate! Decided to come here for a celebration dinner and was able to make online reservations with no issues for the next day. Parking was simple when using the lot connected to the hotel and they do have the valet option. We started with the goat cheese salad with candied walnuts which was enough for 4 servings. We got the rib eye and the filet with the street corn and whipped potatoes both were delicious. We got the demi glaze and the bernaise sauce with the black garlic butter. We have visited this restaurant more than ten times, usually on Sacramento Kings night games. The arena is a straight walk down L street. They have consistently delivered an excellent meal. Our favorites are the pork chop and rib eye. They must source their meats selectively; the flavor and consistency is superb. We love the side of mushrooms. From the hostess that was so welcoming to our waiter that has been a server server there for 30 years, the service was Top Notch. This place gets 5 stars for starting my evening with an amuse bouche. The service and food only got better when we ordered a nice are bone in rib eye, loaded baked potato, wild mushrooms and an accompaniment of sauce. My fav sauce was the blue cheese Madeira. I really liked their bread selection with a crispy flatbread that they served with an accompaniment olive tapenade. We came here last Sunday to celebrate our 12 year wedding anniversary. This restaurant was located inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The ambiance and the low lighting provided a romantic setting. Our server was great, he was attentive and friendly. Since it was our anniversary, we wanted to try a few different things off the menu. We started off by ordering their Dungeness crab cakes, those were delicious. Moist and flavorful. I wish they would of listed how many you would get, for (2) crab cakes for $17, that was pricey! Onto our entrees...I ordered their Mary's All Natural Chicken, my husband ordered their Bone In Ribeye. We ordered two sides, their Classic Cream Spinach and their roasted wild mushrooms. The roasted mushrooms were a hit! Nice tender mushrooms cooked just right. My chicken could use a bit more flavor. It was a little dry. I was too full to finish my meal, so I had to take it to go. This was a special occasion so we kind of splurge for this meal. Other than that, this place was over priced. I visited Dawson's on 12/3/21, which was the weekend of the California International Marathon. As a guest of the Hyatt, where this restaurant is located, I was disappointed to find out Dawson's would not be open on Sunday for me to relax and enjoy a steak after my big race. Not sure if this is a staffing issue, but it should be open every night. They were open on Friday, though, so I decided to sit in the bar area since it was just myself, and I would be ordering mainly their pasta dish to carb up before my race. I ended up ordering their Onion and Leek Soup as a starter. It was basically a French onion soup, and that was really nice. For my main course, I had the Tomato Rose Pasta, which was fine. As for the service, my waiter, Rob, was nothing to write home about. He was very short with me, and just seemed unable to reciprocate my polite tone toward him. I didn't know what to think because he seemed to warm up to a couple sitting across from me. I wonder if he was annoyed I was only ordering pasta. ‍ Meanwhile, in the main dining room, another guest walked in who I know was also racing the marathon that weekend. She also ordered the pasta dish, but her server was professional. While I credit my server, Rob, for being attentive, he just wasn't pleasant like the other server I observed. Looking back, I should've just asked to be seated in the main dining area even if I was just ordering pasta, but when you're walking into an unfamiliar restaurant, there's just no way of really knowing who the nicer servers are. read more

This was a nice change from our usual steak houses (Ruth chris or Mortons). The hubby and I were looking to eat something different and I remembered I had an expired groupon to Dawson's in the Hyatt. We usually only eat at hotels when we stay in them but decided this would be a welcomed change. Our server was Jen and she was fantastic 5 stars for her ( we even heard her and manager trying make things right for another customer). As a person who prides herself on being a relatively good cook I love that use Staub products. I ordered the bone in rib eye medium and it was fantastic my husband had the 10 oz filet butterflied and he said it was delicious. we each had a glass of red wine we had the brussel sprouts with bacon they were pretty good (like Ruth Chris better) but they were good.
