Solid local spot. Great salmon salad. The salmon was prepared well, moist with a bit of char. I sat at the bar and had great conversation with the owner/bartender along with a few other locals. Having had an amazing experience last time and returning to celebrate our anniversary the food and ambiance was a bit disappointing. The appetizers were amazing. We had the green beans which were seasoned to perfection. My man got the Korean skewers I munched on the slaw and it was flavorful. Definitely had a kick of spice and not heat which I didn't hate but if you don't like spicy food skip it. My BF said the skewers were good just a bit thinly sliced and jerky like. The espresso martini was so strong and good. My man said it was too strong so I took one for the team and drank both ..... oh no it was terrible I had to do that **insert sarcasm** The cons..... The bar was fairly empty and there was an obnoxiously drunk or drunk presenting woman at the bar that was "singing" or making random yelling runs and I guess since she was with a man who continued to say he was a "regular" they didn't ask/tell her to shut up! lol while annoying it wasn't a big deal enough to leave. The entree was terrible. There I said it. I ordered the prawn and salmon risotto and I can honestly say I have never had Risotto that lacked the creamy texture and flavor. Genuinely disappointed. The meal came with 4 "prawns" which were also bland. I thought the saving grace would have been the salmon but meh. Overall I was definitely disappointed in the meal. My boyfriend enjoyed his meal and I will say his shrimp was much better than mine. At the end of the evening I spoke with the person behind the bar who turned out to be the owner to ask about Legend has it since I heard him speaking about it earlier. He asked how we enjoyed our meal and me being me I let him know it wasn't that good..... particularly the risotto. If you look at past photos it looks different and I said I looked up the photos on Yelp and it looked different. Granted those were old photos. We had some banter about his detest for Yelp lol I tried to tell him about the pros and social media but he was a bit obtuse so the convo went nowhere. Basically he said sorry about it and they will make it up next time or something along those lines.... Thanks I guess. This place is under new ownership and now offers happy hour. I may return return to try it out or even come back for Sunset Sip but Yardhouse is right across the way and has a great happy hour so use that information how you wish. read more

Foundations will always have a special place in my heart because this is where my girlfriend and I had our very first date. Since it was our anniversary, we thought it would be the perfect place to come back and relive that memory. Parking wasn't bad this time. You could park on the street or there's a parking lot across the street but either way you have to pay. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't busy at all, so seated ourselves at the same spot we ate at, at our first date. We started with a couple of espresso martinis. I'm not much of a drinker, and mine was a little too strong for my taste, so I couldn't finish it. I ended up sticking with water and ordering a lemonade later. For appetizers, we ordered the fried green beans with ranch and skewers. For my entrée, I had the grilled prawn linguine. It had a pesto sauce and sun-dried tomatoes, while my girlfriend ordered the grilled salmon and prawn risotto. My linguine was delicious. The pesto paired really well with the grilled prawns, and the sun-dried tomatoes added great flavor. As much as I enjoyed my pasta, the fried green beans were the star of the meal. They were crispy, flavorful, and easily my favorite thing we ordered. Unfortunately, my girlfriend wasn't a fan of the salmon and prawn risotto. She felt like the risotto didn't have flavor and the prawns weren't that good either. After we finished eating, we struck up a conversation with the bartender, who introduced himself as the restaurant's new owner. He mentioned that he had recently purchased the business. While I don't mind chatting with staff, the conversation with the owner became a little awkward. It wasn't anything intentionally rude, but it was enough that it changed the vibe of what had been a really enjoyable anniversary dinner. Even with that ending, this restaurant will always be meaningful to us because of the memories we've made here. I'd definitely come back for another meal, especially those fried green beans and the grilled prawn linguine but next time I'll probably just enjoy the food and our conversation together. read more

This place is always a vibe. Whether you're at the bar or at a table, it's just a classy, yet comfortable experience. I love their happy hour and their Dine Downtown menu for 2026 was fire. We all got the short ribs, fried green beans and the apple dessert and everything was bomb. The drinks are also tasty, on my most recent visit, we all got the berry lemon drop and I was able to swap out the vodka they use (Tito's I think?) with Ketel One for an extra dollar or so. The service is always friendly and I love that it's within walking distance of the arena (it's across the street, on the corner of 4th and L) and other bars. I've been going to foundation for over 10 years. Always a classic for a good time. Atmosphere and food is always amazing. Just went the other day with some friends and found out they are under new ownership. Still the same great menu but if you can even imagine better. New specials were great, they also have some new cocktails. The Hibiscus Paloma on their happy hour menu was amazing. They also have a better wine selection. If you've never been or haven't been in some time you must try again. This last time I went for the calamari, beef skewers and some chicken fettuccine alfredo. The brownie dessert was delicious. Bartenders, wait staff were very attentive and made sure everything was good and we were enjoying ourselves. Owners are also on site. It was a great experience. I've finally made it to Foundation as I have been wanting to check them out for years and I always get side tracked. My friends and I decided to try out their dinning Downtown menu which is a $45 3 course menu. All of us ordered the exact same thing. Appetizer we ordered the spicy fried green beans. Main course....Beef short rib with seasonal vegetables and potatoes. I held off on the potatoes. Dessert .... Apple crisp. The spicy green bean is delicious nice and crispy and the ranch I believe is homemade. The beef short ribs is a tender bender, juicy and so flavorful I wanted more it was chefs kiss. The Apple crisp was piping hot so good yet not overly sweet. It was topping with homemade cream. The inside the restaurant is very nice, it's spacious and if you want to dine at the bar is it ample space if you decide not to wait on a table if you don't have a reservation. I did order a cocktail from the bar. I ordered an espresso martini and it was terrible. I sent it back and ordered a lemon drop martini which is super refreshing and tasty. The service was pretty good. Our waitress seemed a little overwhelmed with all the tables she had, but still super friendly and did check un on us the best she could. My first time at Foundation and here's what I think: the food was okay. Service was good. There's a bar and TVs to watch the games. It's dimly lit, good enough for a casual date or get together with a few friends. We did the dine in downtown menu. Spicy green beans-battered then fried. Different than what I am used to, but I really liked the crunch. Clam chowder was good. The chowder wasn't too thick and not too runny. I think it could use more clams, but the chowder tasted good. The braised beef was tender and the mash was buttery. Very rich and savory meal. This was a good hearty meal to enjoy while it was cold out. The salmon however was salty and the potatoes could be a little more crisp. This definitely wasn't what I would reorder. Desserts were good. The warm apple crisp was the best thing. Potatoes were a bit firmer. They preferred a more smooth mashed potato experience. Grilled Salmon Filet: 4.1/5 - Salmon was cooked very nicely. The dish was heavily sauced, which is a pro/con as it took away from the salmon. Warm Apple Crisp: 3.5/5 - Was fine. More apples, cinnamon and granola. Missed the 'crisp' part of it. And it came with a cream, not ice cream, which was a bit different from the norm. The drinks were fine, average priced. Overall, if you haven't tried them, please do so. Come to your own conclusions. I've been into Foundation just a few times over many years, including for Dine Downtown a long time ago. Most recently, I joined a colleague for lunch. We enjoyed friendly, helpful and quick service. I had the grilled steak salad, he had a burger and we split some garlic fries. I requested some extra blue cheese and was pleasantly surprised to get both blue cheese chunks and dressing, so enjoyed both with my salad as well as for dipping some fries. Went to Foundation Restaurant & Bar today with my coworkers for lunch. The inside was actually pretty nice; chill vibe, clean, and comfortable atmosphere, so first impressions were good. I ordered the fish tacos with fries, while my coworkers went for the flatbread pizza. The tacos were decent in flavor. I'd give the taste a solid 7/10 but the portion of fish inside each taco was honestly disappointing. It looked like they tossed in a tiny nugget of fried fish and called it a day. For the price, it felt a bit sad they actually served that. To make things worse, there was no sauce or salsa, just toppings like pico de gallo, cabbage, and a lime wedge. The lack of sauce really made the tacos feel dry and underwhelming. So overall, I'd rate the tacos 5/10 (great flavor potential, poor execution). On the bright side, the ranch that came with the fries was amazing, easily the highlight of the meal! My coworkers said their flatbread pizza was okay but nothing to write home about. Overall, Foundation has a nice vibe but the food didn't live up to it. The service was pretty good though, they filled up my water several times because they serve their water in a tiny cup. My son and I came to this establishment on Tuesday night around 7:30 PM to close for a birthday dinner. The restaurant is in a good corner location and was fairly easy to find. Parking wasn't difficult due to the restaurant not having any customers. They had two tables with customers. Atmosphere was great and had big screen TV's throughout the bar and the restaurant. Our waitress named Alicia was the BEST! Attentive, knew our orders, and always checked up on us. Our table ordered cocktails and mixed alcohol drinks that were actually pretty good and got us to a cool level. Me and my son shared an order of barbecue wings as an appetizer. My son got a chicken bacon avocado sandwich with garlic fries and I ordered chicken fettuccine as our entrees. Six chicken wings were $15 and it was just the right size chicken wing very flavorful and sauced up. The garlic fries were also good as they were very garlicky and came with a side of ketchup. I wish they would have tossed the fries instead of putting a spoon full of fresh garlic and garlic oil on top. My son said the sandwich was good and the portion size was enough to fill him up. Plenty of avocado, chicken and bacon. As for the chicken fettuccine, nothing about it wowed me. The chicken was a little dry, but the fettuccine noodles were cooked al dente, the sauce was average, and the mushrooms were ok. Nothing really stood out about that entrée. I wish the sauce was a little more creamy and maybe some Parmesan cheese to top it off? Overall, I give this place a 3.5 out of five. We were lucky to get in on a Thursday night to do Dine Downtown with last minute reservation. For the starters, we tried the baby spinach salad and New England clam chowder. Salad had candied pecans, cranberries, and good amount of dressing. Chowder has lots of clams, good flavor. For main courses, we tried braised beef short rib and the grilled salmon filet. Short rib had good seasoning. Mashed potatoes could've used more seasoning. Salmon looked overcooked, but it was crispy on the outside, fine on the inside. It was served on crispy Yukon gold potatoes and thinly sliced zucchini/yellow squash. For dessert, we tried both options. My husband preferred the apple crisp. Service was good. We dropped in to Foundation on a Friday night a little later than normal after seeing a show. It was during Dine Downtown week so we wanted to enjoy their pre fix menu. Located right downtown on a corner, there is street and a parking structure nearby. The interior is contemporary and clean in appearance, with lots of windows, a large bar and a separate room for larger groups or parties. The bar was packed with lots of what appeared to be locals as they all seemed to know each other and they all knew the bartenders and servers. Cocktail prices were quite reasonable. Everyone was friendly throughout the evening. Our server was super nice, but quite honestly either new, or a little off her game. Not sure which applied. For the Dine Downtown event we chose a selection from the pre fix menu so we could get a variety of items between us. Food was just ok for us. Good but nothing special in my opinion. Came here for the summer sips promotion in July that was advertised online. The drinks were meh we ordered the two promotional well drinks. The thing I couldn't get past was the ungodly smell In there. Smelt like a literal porta potty in the restaurant. And was potent as you opened the door to enter. I was very excited to try Foundation during the Dine Downtown experience. We did call ahead to place a reservation the day of and were seated fairly quickly after arrival. It was busy and it's not a large restaurant so we were grateful. I found the food to be a hit or miss. Good in some ways and lacking in others. The fried green beans were great and the salad was as good as a simple salad can be. The pasta entrée was on the sweet side for some reason that I did not find pleasant. I did love the salmon and the potatoes and broccolini were cooked perfectly. I would eat that dish again. I found the warm apple crisp dessert to be too sweet and would've loved more crust/crisp with the apple filling and ice cream. I didn't love the sort of jam syrup on top of the cheesecake, but the cheesecake itself was good. I don't know if I would come back here to try more of their dishes based on the dine downtown experience. read more

Although this was not the best rated restaurant, we decided to give it a try as part of the dine Sacramento series we came into the foundation restaurant so excited for a three course meal the appetizer that was pretty good was the green beans deep-fried I liked the taste and texture of them My entrée was the beef short ribs, which unfortunately were far from beef short ribs. I would've expected the short ribs to be soft and flavorful, however there was not much flavor other than the sauce on the side the mashed potatoes were plain . The meat Itself was actually on the dry side - very disappointing The salmon, however, was delightful along with the squash, which had a touch of salt and sweets finally for dessert we had the New York cheesecake, which was actually good and the apple crumble, which honestly was not crumbled at all . Came here for the dine downtown menu tonight. I really want to like this place but it just doesn't get it for me. I like the location and a couple times i've been here at parking seems to have not been an issue. The hostess on this occasion, just as the last couple seemed to be very nice and accommodating. This came bland lacking seasoning in the meat. The sauce seemed to have good seasoning and flavor however, it was inconsistent part of it was seasoned.Well, part of it didn't seem to have any flavor at all. The mashed potato that came with the meal was very liquidy. This lack consistency, almost as if it were out of a box. The carrots that came with it though my dining companion enjoyed them.I thought was undercooked.I prefer my carrots on a softer side. For a dessert, we had the apple crisp, and in New York cheesecake. The applecrisp was okay, seem to have something kind of crunchy or nutty in it? That kind of distracted from the apple and the whipped cream. I would have preferred apple to be more apple tasting.Instead of sweet and the whipped cream to have more consistency, rather than so light. The cheesecake I felt didn't have a lot of cheesecake flavor to it....and my serving seemed small. The service I felt was also awkward. Timing was an opportunity. So I just had the house salad and a glass of wine. But the salad was so delicious that I needed to write a review. The house salad consists of mixed greens with chicken, tomatoes, and avocado with a raspberry vinaigrette. I was worried about the vinaigrette because they can be too sweet, but not this one. It had a good balance among the sweet, tart, and acidic flavors. And the mixed greens weren't bitter at all! The chicken was moist and anything that already comes with avocado is a plus! The white wine I ordered was also delicious! Despite it being a light meal, it was rather filling. Service was really friendly and accommodating as we were a group of six that didn't make reservations. It was a Tuesday night so there weren't many people around the area anyway. The ambiance has steakhouse vibes with its dark decor, but it's not pretentious. The music they were playing was eclectic, from top 40 to some EDM. The location is tucked away on a corner and easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but once inside, it has a cozy, modern vibe. You walk in and are immediately greeted by the bar and a gallery-style dining space that feels both relaxed and lively. Even though the place was packed, the staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. We were seated right away (despite running a few minutes late), and our server made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. I ordered the risotto with shrimp and salmon, which was a great gluten-free option--super flavorful and cooked perfectly. My family ordered a variety of dishes: spaghetti and meatballs for the kids, chicken fettuccine, beef skewers, a steak salad, and a chicken sandwich with fries. Everything came out quickly and was well-prepared. No complaints across the table! Been coming here for several years and the food has always been really good, but unfortunately Friday night (last kings game) was a serious let down. I ordered off their special menu. Wife ordered the Foundation burger and fries and I ordered the chili cheese dog. We waited appx 40 mins for our food which came out after nearby tables arrived and ordered after us and theirs arrived before ours. The burger was good, but chili cheese dog ($13) was PATHETIC! Rather than return it right away, I took a couple of bites to see if it tasted better than it looked and it was horrible. Asked to talk to the manager and I explained to her that not only that it tasted old, but that I couldn't believe the kitchen would serve that. The hot dog looked like it was grilled several hrs earlier and had very little chili and hard cheese on a hard bun. It was served with tasteless limp coleslaw. The mgr stated that I should have brought it to there attention when it arrived, but I wanted ti try it before passing judgment. I thought she would have made an adjustment on our bill, but nothing! Again, I've had 40± meals here and this was the worst meal ever and the new owners need to get it together or it will be short-lived. read more

We were seated quickly without a reservation woo hoo!! It was in high top seats in the bar area but that didn't bother us. We had martinis, tacos and a salmon sandwich. And garlic fries. The tacos shredded meat was in the dry side I like dripping saucy meat in my tacos so not my preference. Salmon very good simple sandwich. And garlic fries melted in our mouths. Can I rate zero stars? We had the most horrible experience for dinner on 9/12/26 before a concert. I have been here before (for dinner prior to another concert), so I was anticipating a nice evening. We had reservations and when we arrived we were seated at a two top in the bar. We had great service initially wth a nice waiter. They were expectedly busy and we ordered. As we were there for at least 30-45 minutes I started to notice other tables who were there before us still did not have their meals. One table of ladies looked very upset, expressed it to the waiter and left. I do not think they received their meals. I had begun to get worried we would have to rush through a nice dinner to be able to arrive at the concert on time. When I began to see people leaving who were sat before us and another table eating who had arrived at least 30 minutes after us - I began to really question what was going on. Around 7:40 (we arrived at 6:15), our waiter came to tell us that it wasn't going to happen. Good thing we had at least ordered a baguette because that became our dinner! Totally unacceptable! I have never in all my life (or my husband's) had this experience. It is understandable that restaurants get busy but to not even be served - unacceptable. I would have appreciated being told how far behind the kitchen was so we could at least have to option of going elsewhere. I cannot recommend this restaurant whatsoever and it completely impacted our special evening out. read more

What a great restaurant with a location that means easy parking! Had a business lunch here and it was the perfect choice. The acoustics were great for carrying on a business conversation. We could hear other without shouting. Great job, Foundation. Hard surfaces and echoing acoustics are the bane of my dining experience. You've nailed acoustical control! The food was delicious. My dining partner had the Grilled Chicken & Fettuccine that was generous in sauce and she said it delicious. I had the Pepperoni Flat Bread and it hit the spot taste-wise and was the perfect lunch size. Our server was perfect...attentive but invisible at the same time. This place is a block away from the Golden 1 Center. We went the night of the Depeche Mode concert and luckily got a spot at the bar before it filled up. Food was great as was the service. On concert nights, you need to make a reservation or hope you get lucky like we did. Would totally go back. read more

I was leaving work and decided to order a pick up order for me and my wife. I found this restaurant on yelp and the menu items were phenomenal. I ordered the Italian Cobb salad for my wife and I ordered the Asian short rib salad. When I called the staff was very polite and very helpful over the phone. When I came to pick up the food the front desk person was very helpful and polite. My wife loved her salad. She said it was the best salad she has had. My salad was phenomenal. The short ribs were cooked to perfection and very flavorful. The dressing and additional ingredients were the perfect combination for the salad. The ambiance is very customer friendly. We came in on a Saturday night before the Shane Gillis show at Golden One. The food was good, the spicy green beans were spectacular, but the reason I'm writing this review is for the service. I wish I had caught the gentleman's name (possibly Cam?) but he was INCREDIBLE. He was slammed when we sat down and he managed to be personable and attentive to every single table. He was a true class act and made sure everyone was taken care of. My husband and I truly appreciate the experience we had with him and will be back because of his service! read more
