We were here June 20th, 2026 for a afternoon World Cup Game . (Germany and Ivory Coast). Ambiance- We were hoping for some good ambiance, a real watch party being a pub. It wasn't that. Maybe if they were USA or more popular teams it would have been different. There were 4 people in the couch area, it was cozy so we didn't join them, but that was were the action was. No one in the bar area where we sat was into the game Seating- We arrived around 1pm just as the game was starting. The bar was nearly empty. Two parties were there sitting at the bar. One group had around 7 people, all in A's Jersey's. The A's were playing that evening at 7pm so these people were getting the party started early. We sat on one of the couple high tops. There was a tv right above us and was impossible. To see from our angle. There ware 2 TVs above the bar. One kept going in and out due to no signal, but the other one help up. We turned our chairs to face the tv so it was a great seating arrangement. The sound was not on for the TV so you just had to follow the game visually. Food- It's a pub so it's all pub food. My husband didn't want anything fried so that eliminated the fish and chips. That left us with a salad or a burger We got the pub burger for $21. It seemed kind of steep, but you're in a tourist area so that explains it. The burger was extra juicy at medium so that was good. It did lack flavor. It does help that it had pickles on it. That gave it some flavor. The onions were flavorless, but looked grilled. The menu doesn't say it, but it comes with fries. The fries needed more salt, but dipping them in ketchup helped the flavor. Now reading other reviews it looks like we could have gotten a side salad instead of fries. I guess we could have asked, but we didn't know it came with fries so we didn't ask for a subsitute. Bathroom- They had really nice bathrooms. You didn't have to go out side to the public restrooms. That was a plus especially since my burger was extra juicy and I needed to wash them. Parking- It's all street parking out front. Old Sacramento also has two garages that aren't that far. Depending on the day and the events that are gong on you you either pay by the day or by the hour. And don't lose your ticket as then you have to pay the maximum. If you are looking for a sit down place with pub food you've found your destination. This is one of the newer restaurants in Old Sacramento that isn't a white tablecloth type of restaurant. Which was a perk, because we weren't looking for fine dining this time. Actually we are never looking for fine dining when we go to Old Sacramento. The place was very clean and put off the new vibe. Hey there Party People Roaming around Old Town Sacramento getting ready for the Big 4th of July celebrations. Just can't resist a pub atmosphere especially with the World Cup playing in the background. The Bear & Crown represents the English Pub culture expertly. Thought I was back in London. Our waiter was great and made some fabulous suggestions. We had the Hummus dip as a starter. It was delicious. First time I've had it with roasted veggies in the dip. It really added an extra layer of flavor. The pita bread was fresh baked and perfectly soft. I had the Tequila Chicken Pasta. Be hungry because the plate was huge. I told my waiter to make it extra spicy and boy did the chefs listen. It was the bomb the sauce was rich like an Alfredo...so tasty. Hubby had the Bear Burger. I was looking for somewhere to eat for dinner in Old Sacramento and wandered by Bear & Crown. As it is a pub, it was dimly lit inside. It didn't have the most welcoming feel, as someone approached us from across the room after a few moments. I ordered the Fish & Chips and also tasted the Cottage Pie and Scotch Eggs. The portions for the main dishes weren't sizable but were good in terms of taste. The Fish & Chips was fine, but I will say the fish itself wasn't anything special. There was only one peice of fish, but I thought the cut was acceptable, although it would've been nice if the portion was slightly more. I thought the minted peas served with the dish were interesting. I'd never had anything like it before, the mint was very strong. I was impressed that the tartar sauce was made with fresh dill. The Cottage Pie was flavorful and I think I preferred this dish due to it being more unique to me than what i ordered. Service was fine overall. Wow! Didn't know what we were walking into when we came in here for lunch: spacious and chill vibe with British pub decor and feel. Served by the personable Leo, we thoroughly enjoyed our delicious lunch: hummus dip app (yum), Margherita flatbread ( yum yum), and a HUGE coronation chicken salad sandwich with fries...OMG, the chicken was amazing, and I was full before I finished the first half ( dinner was the second half!). Walked by a couple eating at the bar and snapped a few pics of their lunch: huge is an understatement for the Asian chicken salad the female had, and the fish and chips looked delish too! I ordered the Cottage Pie and it was delicious, but tiny. It was very small at approximately 4" in diameter and 2" tall. I would probably need to eat 2-3 of these small pies to be satisfied. It was tasty and had lots of flavor with ground beef, potatoes, carrots, onions, and peas with gravy. The pie was very hot and fresh as it was served in a cast iron pie pan. The Scotch Eggs were flavorful and served with a curry mayo. The curry mayo was a delicious dipping aioli type sauce. The scotch eggs were soft boiled, breaded with sausage and breadcrumbs before being deep fried. They were scrumptious! The fish and chips were delicious however, the portion was small. There was only one piece of fish that looked like it was a half order. The tarter sauce tasted fresh and homemade with fresh dill. The minted peas were interesting as they were diced peas with a strong mint flavor. There is ample bar seating as this establishment is a restaurant/bar. Two pool tables are available which only take quarters to play. There is seating outside and an outdoor fire pit that overlooks the alley and other buildings in Old Sacramento. It was interesting to view the buildings from the patio as there appears to be apartments on the upper levels of the buildings, but at the ground level the façade retains the original historic presentation/construction. A nice new spot in Old Sacramento for the tourists and locals alike. I really appreciated that this place is comfortable and seamless with hosting large group events. While a little pricey, likely because of the location, we had our own space and a great selection of foods. We love that they seem to understand that some of the most delicious British food consists of the foods from countries they colonized, so the menu incorporation of the Indian curries are much appreciated! There was quite the array of fried foods but all were very good and crispy. The salad was also decent. The interior is a bit far and moody, but I think that sets the vibe. The staff seem fine and are available if needed. Parking may be a little rough given the location, but it's a fun place to check out and have a nicer meal in Old Sac! read more

I first want to say that I knew I would be visiting the area with my pup and so I messaged a few places I was interested in stopping at about their dog policy. Bear & Crown replied to me right away that they have a very dog friendly patio where we could enjoy a meal and some drinks. They have great customer service. When I arrived, they were having Drag Queen Karaoke and the place was packed. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and customers were very supportive of the singers (regardless of their talent level lol) so I really enjoyed the reassuring and uplifting vibes. We hung out in front for a bit and listened to a few songs while a few in my group had a drink but ultimately it was a bit too crowded and rowdy for us with our lil pup. Otherwise I would have been at the bar right away and had my name down for a song. My husband and I were visiting Old Sacramento on Saturday and decided to check out Bear & Crown for the first time. The inside was decent sized with plenty of tables and booths - I loved seeing the interior decorated like a true London pub. The old school phonebooth was a nice touch too! We ordered the Kids Grilled Cheese and Fries, Fish and Chips, Pub House Pretzel, Scotch Eggs and the Best Date Ever. I also ordered a Gin Fizz which was a special drink they had for Mardi Gras. Everything was so good! My husband loved his Fish and Chips, the kids devoured their Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and I ate every single one of those Scotch Eggs and bacon wrapped dates. I was seriously craving Shepherd Pie and though they didn't have it the barkeep was able to direct me to a suitable choice, their Cottage Pie. For $17 in a piping hot small cast iron serving dish it hot the spot. It's a nicely seasoned mix of ground beef, onions, peas and carrots in a rich brown gravy topped with whipped Duchess Potatoes. It was very flavorful and worth the charge IMO. They also offer at least a dozen beers including the larger well known brands and some local flavors. I have visited this pub in the past and it never disappoints. I will return next time travels being me to Sacramento. read more

We were in this part of the Capital City for Dine Downtown 2026. We checked in earlier than our dinner reservation that Saturday and got sat in a spacious booth. It's beautiful inside with oversized seating booths, couches & ottomans, pool tables, and a full service bar. While the outside had more seating, it was too chilly for a comfortable dinner. Being a British pub, they are adorned with decor reminiscent of London. They also have a souvenir shop in the adjacent connected stall. Our drinks were the non-alcoholic Modest Mule and a glass of 20 Acres Cabernet Sauvignon. Appetizers were the Scotch Egg and Tomato Bisque (soup of the day). Entrees were Almond Crusted Brook Trout and Bangers & Mash (sausage and mashed potatoes) Desserts were Seasonal Bread Pudding and Sticky Toffee Pudding. For $49/person, this wasn't a bad deal. The fish and desserts lacked in flavor though. This is a good British pub in Old Sac with a great environment for watching a game while having a meal or a drink. I heard 1 couple without reservation was told that the wait time was about 1 hour. Bear & Crown is located within the Old Sac area by 22nd street. On a Saturday night, it was not so hard to find parking. $3 per 1 hour for parking in one of the garages, max of $15 per day. This restaurant space wise is huge with a bar area, tables and booths. Good for groups. We celebrated our wedding anniversary with a wonderful meal. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Leo, who seated us and gave us his recommendations. My husband is a fish and chips snob and couldn't decide between the fish and chips and chicken tikka marsala, so James offered a piece of fish on the side. That was a great way to try the fish without committing, and it was cooked as he likes it - crispy and fresh without too much thick breading. The chicken marsala was generous and delicious, just like a British Pub should be. I had the butternut squash soup and a farro salad. My coworkers and I were attending a day-and-a-half work conference and, like all responsible professionals, we decided the best way to recharge before heading back was to escape for lunch. We wandered into Old Sacramento and came across Bear & Crown, a British pub, and honestly it ended up being one of those "why haven't we tried this place before?" moments. The space inside is huge and has that cozy pub vibe without feeling cramped. Plenty of room for groups like ours that need space to decompress from PowerPoint slides and conference snacks. Our server was fantastic. Super friendly, very attentive, and somehow managed to keep our table happy while juggling everything else going on in the restaurant. A true professional. Now if you know me, you know I have a personal policy: if a restaurant has a pretzel and beer cheese on the menu, I am legally obligated to order it. I'm happy to report Bear & Crown absolutely delivered. The pretzel was warm, soft, and the beer cheese was exactly what you want when you're pretending to have a responsible work lunch. The rest of my team ordered the fish and chips -- because when you're in a British pub, you have to commit to the theme. Everyone loved it and there were very few crumbs left behind, which is always a good sign. Overall it was a great lunch break and a perfect way to mentally recover before heading back to the conference. I can't believe it took me so long to stop into Bear & Crown! I've been wanting to go since they first opened and we finally went for Happy Hour/Dinner. First off, it is WAY BIGGER than I thought it would be. They have a few seats right out front, and inside they have seating at the bar with some high top four seaters as well as booths and tables around the restaurant, plus some comfy seats around the TV up front. Plus, there's a huge outdoor area that is beautiful. We made it for Happy Hour so we ended up ordering a couple beers along with their Happy Hour Scotch Eggs ($6/egg), the Beer-Battered Banger Bites ($7), plus the fried pickles ($12) off the regular appetizer menu. We loved how all the sauces were made in house, the curry aioli with the Scotch eggs was delicious. They were our first every Scotch eggs so while we don't have anything to compare them to they were delicious and the yolk was nice and jammy. The fried pickles were house pickles, very thinly sliced into chips and were crunchy and flavorful. The house made ranch with the pickles was the perfect pairing. The Beer-Battered Banger Bites were indulgent but super flavorful- definitely something we would order again. For dinner we ordered the Cast Iron Seared Salmon ($28) and the Cottage Pie ($17). I'm embarrassed to say I didn't realize you could choose the temperature on your fish- goes to show how often I'm ordering salmon. Our server suggested medium well and it came out flaky, moist and super flavorful. It was served over dill rice with a Scotch cream sauce and capers. The full dish was filling and really delicious. The Cottage Pie was much more homey, filling and definitely a comfort dish. It has ground beef, in a tomato onion gravy with peas, carrots, and was topped with duchess potatoes. All the flavors went so well together. Our server, James, was amazing. Super nice and conversational, he gave us some great suggestions from the menu and made sure my water was filled checked in to see if we needed refills on our beers. Found this place completely by accident. We were in old Sac waiting for a venue to start and wanted appetizers. We walked up 2nd street and saw that this was a British pub so we decided to just try it. The pub was so pretty inside. There's a red phone booth exactly like the ones found in London. A couple of lounge seating areas that reminded me of a ski lodge or a room from a bed and breakfast. And the bar sits right there so ordering drinks and getting food was so easy. We got the Trout Pate, Scotch Eggs, and Bacon wrapped dates along with a pumpkin spiced cocktail and red ale on draft. The food and drinks were so good. The only complaint was we got really stale bread for the pate, but everything else was delicious. 5/5. From the pictures you can see how good the food was and the prices were reasonable. The service was impeccable. We were a big group of 6 and the staff was attentive and patient while being extremely professional. It was a really nice experience. It was pride weekend, my best friends came down to March in the parade with me, after we were hungry and looking to continue supporting our own LGBTQ+ community. This place was picked based on the backstory and wanting to support the owners, boy did we make a mistake! We showed up to a basically empty restaurant; minus a few people at the bar counter, and were sat rather fast. Our drink orders were taken; I picked an Arnold Palmer, and we were left to look over the menu for 30 minutes. Finished my drink way before the waiter came back to take orders. After we placed our orders I asked for a refill of my Arnold Palmer, instead I was just served tea for my refill. We placed our orders; I ordered bacon & eggs, and proceeded to wait another 60 minutes for our food - mind you it's still an empty restaurant. Finally our food comes out, and nothing is correct or even warm. Everything lacks flavor, the plates & silverware are dirty, and out of a party of 6; which includes auto gratuity, NONE of us were happy with our food. We all started trying to make the best out of the situation by just laughing at how utterly ridiculous the service and quality of food was. To be fair though the staff did comp one of the appetizers and main entrees, because they sensed how bad their service was. But unfortunately the damage to their reputation was already done, and we simply will never be back, nor recommend this place to any of our friends. read more

Overall, my experience and meal at Bear and Crown was decent. The pros: Nice ambiance and service was quick and friendly. We ordered the Fish and Chips to share and the fish was quite good. The cod was fresh, tender and flaky. The battered outside was delicious. Fries were decent but didn't wow me. I also ordered a side salad which was ok. The cons: The dish was $25 and came with one piece of fish and a small amount of fries. Really overpriced for the amount received. The dish also did not include the minted peas noted on the menu. The side salad was some leafy greens and three grape tomatoes halved. For $25 I would have hoped to receive at least 2 pieces of fish and a good portion of fries...maybe even a side salad..... So while the fish was good and atmosphere was nice, it was not worth the price I paid. I could go to Railroad Fish and Chips a couple of blocks away and get 3 pieces with fries for $15. I do think I would revisit for happy hour though, they did have a nice bar. read more

Not sure how this place has such good reviews. The dates were severely undercooked, raw bacon. The poutine was inedible. Fish and chips was oily. No one came to offer drink refills (cost $1 for soda refills). No service at all. Just overall a terrible experience. read more

What a wonderful gem in Old Town Sacramento. Staff and service genuinely warm and friendly. English dishes were delightful and tasty. The steak frites and cottage pie were on point. Lots of TVs for watching g sports along with 2 billiards table and probably darts as well. A very warm and inviting place to watch sports and enjoy food and drinks. read more

Visited March 27th..see receipt. When I am in old Sacramento I try to fit in as much as I can because it's such a fun place to go to! It's kept it's charm and character! We went to the Bear and Crown because I really wanted a pretzel! Their pretzels are not the typical pretzel you would expect. It was a nice surprise to have a freshly made pretzel with perfect seasoning and served with 2 sauces. My boyfriend had the beer special and I had a glass of wine. It's beautiful inside with oversized seating booths. The outside has more seating and even set up for corn hole. The full bar is nice and the decorations make you feel you are in a British pub! They also sell items next door that remind you of England! Love the red phone booth( photo op!). Leo was our server and he was very pleasant and attentive! This is a classy yet warm environment! Loudness at high tops by bar: 80 decibels. This is equal to being near a running lawnmower. The bar was only 50% full. We visited on a Sunday evening. I love the uniqueness that independent restaurants bring to our city. Nevertheless, this was a disappointment. My dining companion wears hearing aids, so open dining room seating is a tough experience for him. We asked to be seated at a table/booth but were told that without a reservation there was only bar seating. I was facing the hostess station and saw very few people being seated, so I assume no dining room seating was due to a staffing shortage. My companion is from the UK, so he was excited about the menu. He had the Cottage Pie and I had the Mac and Cheese. Both meals were delicious! We were disappointed that our server hadn't told us about the Sunday Roast offering. After we had placed our orders, we began scrolling through their website to learn more about the restaurant. That's when we saw the meal offering. We tried to flag someone down to change our orders before it was too late, but again, because of what appeared to be a staffing shortage, we couldn't find anyone in time to change our orders. It's unfortunate too that our server hadn't told us about the Sunday special. I wish this restaurant the best, as my British friend was very excited to find a taste from home here. read more

Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Seating: 5/5 Parking: 3/5 Came on a Tuesday afternoon so it was very slow (busiest times are on the weekends). Even so, service was slow and wasn't too talkative. Ordered Steak Frites and this is not a steakhouse so wasn't expecting too much: Steak and fries lacked seasoning/salt. Steak was a bit charred (ordered medium). Overall not bad meal but 3/5. A lot of indoor/outdoor seating: the booths have very tall walls so feels private and enclosed, comfortable, cushioned seating. read more
