It seems to be run by an older Korean couple, which adds a charming, homey touch. We stopped by on a Friday for lunch and took advantage of their happy hour (available before 3 PM). We ordered the Dawa Roll Combo for $16.50, which includes two classic rolls and your choice of a half specialty roll (Barton Springs, Zilker Park, Spicy Onion Crunchy, or Phoenix). We went with the Crunch Roll (avocado, cucumber, crab meat, eel sauce, spicy mayo, and crunchy flakes), Eel Roll (baked eel, avocado, cucumber, eel sauce, and sesame seeds), and the Zilker Park Roll (crab meat and avocado, topped with more avocado, eel sauce, spicy mayo, and sesame seeds). While all the rolls were good and tasted fresh, they leaned on the simpler side and had fairly similar flavor profiles. The Zilker Park Roll was my favorite of the three. The food took about 10-15 minutes to come out, and everything tasted fresh and light. After eating, we brought our plate back up to the counter. My guess is they took them into the container before the sushi was made and handed to us. It took an hour and calling ahead to finish the sushi. We were running some errands around Burnet Rd and read good reviews about this food truck at 5000 Burnet Rd. so we thought to give it a try! We got there around 1:40PM which was kind of a late lunch, and too early for dinner. It appeared to be a ghost town of food trailers...which could be a good or bad thing meaning no food trucks were open; or they were open but there was not a lot of people. Thankfully it turned out to be the latter. (Whew) However, only four food trailers were open which was not a bad deal for our first time trying the 5000 Burnet food trailers. Dawa Sushi seems to be a Japanese-Korean food truck since they also have other Korean food on their menu as well besides sushi. SERVICE: I read a lot of reviews complaining about the wait so I came prepared. It seems they knew about this complaint since they have a sign that reminds people to be kind as this is real food, made as fast as possible but with care and attention. There was one table waiting for their food ahead of us. Once we put in our order (the lady who took our order was nice), we walked around to check out other food trucks but nothing interested us so we walked back to wait for our food, but as soon as we sat down it was ready. Our whole exploratory journey of the 4 other trucks didn't take more than 10 minutes so that is really not bad at all. FOOD: We got the "SAKURA ROLL" and "CRUNCH ROLL". They both were pretty good; the rice was soft, and the fish was not fishy (one of my fears when getting sushi from a food truck, but who doesn't have that fear right?), and the amount of sauces on each roll was perfect (not too much that it overpowered the rolls). All in all, if you're like me who love to try new restaurants/food trucks that are decent and not a waste of your money, and support locals, you're in for a treat! The food was good, but the wait was incredibly frustrating. We went on a Friday after work. When we placed our order the owner said "it would take a while". Since "a while" can mean a lot of things, I asked for a time estimate, and she said "it could be 30 minutes, but could be over 30 minutes". It ended up taking an hour and 15 minutes for us to get our food, which is significantly more than we expected. At that point, no food is worth that wait. If you decide to try Dawa Sushi, I'd probably suggest trying to place your order online or over the phone so you avoid the long wait. As for the food, I got Erika's roll, which had smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, and was topped with mango and a mango sauce. I loved the mango on this. It wasn't mind blowing sushi, but it was good. My boyfriend got the bibimbap, which he said was alright. read more

This one is for the vegans... they have options and they are great. I called to ask about a few things and the owner was so helpful. I ended up with the garlic edamame, avocado vege spring roll, and the brown veggie roll. I got the brown veggie roll with soy paper as I hate seaweed; loved it! Came the other day and ordered bibimbap and a side of seaweed salad. After ordering, I was told the wait would be about 30 min, which was fairly accurate but felt a little longer. The bibimbap was warm and tasted good, it was also enough for a little more than one meal, for me at least. There is better out there and maybe I should've tried the sushi, but I wanted warm food! The seaweed salad was fine but the menu's listed price was less by a few dollars compared to what they charged. It also wasn't a very big serving for the price. Overall it's a decent choice at the food truck park if you want bibimbap or something like it, but probably wouldn't be a destination I'd seek out. read more

Great sushi place in a trailer, that also has Korean food! I got the veggie roll and the spicy rice cakes (tteokbokki) and everything was so fresh. I'm going to be craving the rice cakes now - they're sweet, savory, chewy, and spicy and strangely work well when it's so hot out. The veggie roll was delicious and they asked if I wanted nori or soy paper as a wrapper - I went with the nori (seaweed). The owners were friendly and the wait was short. It is hot out there, but there's a table in the shade and they're next to Merry Monarch ice cream - I got ice cream while I waited, and it was a good idea. They also have bubble tea. Dawa Sushi is a hidden gem of a food truck. The owners are always so sweet and polite to their customers. The menu has a lot of variety, which I love. They serve everything from Korean, ramen, udon, sushi, and boba. The sushi is absolutely incredible! One of my new favorite rolls is the candy cane roll. I also really enjoy the spicy tuna tacos that are topped with a little spicy mayo and tobiko. The spicy tuna has just the right kick. There is a cute little covered dining area outside of the truck to sit and eat or wait at. All of the food is made with love and takes a minute to prepare but I promise it is more than worth it. This is one of the best sushi I've gotten. I got the crunchy roll and the Barton springs roll for ~$22 with tax. My friend and I were the first to order and it took, I won't lie, a long freaking time. 30 minutes. Granted, they had just opened so maybe they had to get stuff organized. Better than average sushi and I was pleasantly surprised. The rolls were fresh and made with care. Docking two stars because while this is a food truck, the operations are SLOW. The couple cannot handle the volume of orders. No free water or fan in this heat. My real gripe is the continuous answering of phone orders while there is a line forming on site. The sushi rolls here are better than most brick and mortar I've had. The rice was on the vinegary side but well cooked, the fried shrimp was crunchy not soggy, and the rolls were good size. This is definitely a must. An absolute FAN of Dawa sushi at this point. At my previous job we used to order party trays for our small office lunches (20 people). I wasn't sure how they were going to handle it but decided to call and ask if they can cater for a larger group at my current company (70 people). It is $9 for two rolls of sushi (you have to pick from a list), and $11 for the two rolls + a miso soup. The options from the list are obviously not going to be the fanciest or the highest quality. For the price, I was impressed. However, the rolls I got didn't have much of the fish in them, and I wish I could taste more spice (at least in the Crunch roll because it is supposed to have "spicy" mayo). The garlic edamame was delicious, but quite expensive at $4.50. Overall, they were tasty rolls, and are perfect if you just want some casual, Westernized sushi. My friend liked her Miso, but she said it wasn't "exceptional." In terms of the environment and service, it was great! The owners of the truck are very nice and I experienced no problems with them, and the wait for the food wasn't long. The food truck is located in a parking space with several other delicious looking trucks (Thai, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Venezuelan, and hot dogs), so it's great to come here with a group so everyone can order a cuisine they like. It is quite expensive here if you're not ordering a deal, but I would like to try some other things on their menu such as their boba and more specialized sushi rolls. read more

Went here with my husband today because it was GORGEOUS outside. This place is right off of Burnett Road and tucked in a cute little plaza with some other food trucks. They had a ton of options which I liked. They don't have a ton of seeting but there were miscellaneous tables all around the parking lot by different trucks. I got Erin's Benton which comes with 4 california rolls, 2 gyozas, salad, miso soup, rice, and korean chicken. This was SO GOOD! By far the best California rolls I have had in my life, the chicken was juicy and crispy, the salad was delicious, it was all frankly amazing and hit just the right note after a long day of work. Seriously stop what you are doing and go get some of this! My husband got the crispy salmon and some sushi as well, both were also delicious. I am a big fan of Bibimbap. Dawa's bibimbap does not disappoint. It is a very filling dish with heaping vegetables (I counted at least 6 different kinds), sliced beef and fried egg on top. Next time, I will ask for the sauce to be on the side, as it soaks too much more of the rice than I like. My son got himself the Maui volcano roll and the unagi tempura roll. All were very tasty. Dawa has moved from 1st Street to 5000 Burnet. This means Dawa has hit the big time. 5000 Burnet is imho the finest food court in the city. Dawa is a first rate addition to the team. I had their top of the line sushi roll. It is called something like a Jackie Chan. (It is important to remember the name of someone you take to bed. You don't have to remember the name of your latest sushi roll. The sushi roll won't take offense.) It was a wonderful wonderful roll. I also had their special house salad - which they call a dawa salad. One of the strangest salads I have ever had. Some sort of brown coating on top which may have been a very thick peanut dressing (more of a paste than a true dressing.) Marinated cucumber and other veggie tidbits within. I never figured out what I was eating but I loved every minute of it. I would order that again at a moment's notice. And it is a distinct improvement on the seaweed salad that we always order when we need veggies to go with our sushi. Overall, this continues to be a nifty creative place.
