4.5 stars. Dave & Andy's is a local ice-cream shop that was founded in 1983 and makes all of its ice creams on the premises. I was a customer here one time. As soon as I entered the shop, an employee very kindly spoke with me. She patiently waited while I decided which flavors of ice creams to order, and she offered me free samples. Almost a couple dozen flavors were on display (e.g., pumpkin Oreo, strawberry, fruit cocktail, chocolate s'mores, keylime pie, Heath, and cookie dough). I ordered a cone with one scoop of Nutter Butter ice cream (5 stars) and one scoop of Oatmeal Raisin ice cream (4 stars). It cost several dollars. These scoops were a very large size and tasted good to excellent. I enjoyed my ice-cream cone. Some indoor seating was available. As I was leaving the shop, the employee thanked me and wished me a good day. One recommendation is to paint the walls a fun color other than white. read more

Went in on a Monday afternoon wasn't sure if they were open because I didn't smell the smell of waffle cones down the street like I used to when I was a student at Pitt! It also Thanksgiving break so not a busy ice cream time. Ended p getting a sundae and enjoyed it (you can pick any flavor of ice cream for sundaes). $8.50 for a speciality sundae which is about average these days. The service was great. We were waitied on immediately, asked if we wanted to sample any flavors.. I personally just wish they had more fall/winter seasonal flavors instead of lemon cookie and other flavors that remind me more of summer. But they did have a nice selection of flavors (three cases full) and they the typical selection cups, cones, sundaes and milkshakes. They do not accept cash! Love their variety of flavors, the homemade waffle cones are a must try, and their seasonal flavors are on point! The pumpkin pie was delicious but I just love all their flavors, can't go wrong with any of them. Plus the staff were so nice and gave great portions for a pretty reasonable price. We stopped by yesterday around 6:30pm and there was no line. There were two people working and they were patient with us and we were able to get our cones really quickly. The inside has three small tables and a bench and the outside has two small tables and a bench to sit on. The inside used to be more colorful before it changed ownership, now it's very white and stark. My lavender coffee cream with a waffle cone was really good and the scoop was HUGE. A spontaneous Saturday evening drive after dinner brought us to Dave & Andy's in Oakland, right on Pitt's campus. Happy to report that the new owners seem to be doing well--the line stretched out the door, always a good sign. I tried the Chocolate Strawberry Pretzel ice cream, which was unexpectedly delicious. The salty pretzels paired perfectly with the sweetness of the chocolate and strawberries--definitely not your average flavor combo. My husband went for the Rocky Road and gave it a solid thumbs-up. Despite the line, service was quick--we were in and out in just a few minutes. One heads-up: this is a cashless business. If you miss the small outdoor sign, the staff will curtly remind you inside. The ice cream is great, but the customer service could use a bit more warmth. Dave & Andy's was our chosen location for a sweet treat after dinner in Oakland one evening. This tiny place is slightly tucked down a side street off Forbes. The inside definitely gives ice cream parlor vibes with fun black and white tiled floors and white and silver furniture. The staff were very friendly and let us sample a few different flavors. I ended up going with the $6.25 flight of four because I couldn't decide between all of the great options. Honestly, the flight had so much ice cream that it may have been equivalent to getting a pint of a single flavor. I actually got a lid to take some of it home and stick in the freezer for the next day. I loved how creamy and flavorful the ice cream was. You can tell they use quality ingredients. Finally got to try this famous spot. I was sad when I heard a while ago that they were closing before I got to try them and super ecstatic when I heard they'd be reopening! Today I got the coconut yogurt and banana sorbet in a cup absolutely amazing combination. Ice cream was smooth and exactly what I needed, unexpected deliciousness. Nice atmosphere and clean. 1 scoop is $4.00 but if you want 1 scoop in a waffle cone it's $5.25. Two scoops is $5.50 and with waffle cone it's $6.75. The waffle cone is huge! But it tastes a little different from what it used to be ... a bit more pasty and floury ... and the m & m was still at the bottom but the waffle cone was dripping bc the hole at the bottom was too big and the m & m didn't stop the drippage. I'll be honest that I shed a tear when I found out that Dave & Andy's was closing. Being the spot of my now husband's and I's first date 11 years go, this ice cream shop means to much to me (even so much that we had wedding photos taken there!). But then a few months later when I found out that a couple was taking over and reopening the shop after just a brief few months-long hiatus, more now happy tears were shed! We stopped by on a recent visit to Pittsburgh to enjoy a scoop and relish the memories. The decor was still the same, and the menu was pretty much still as extensive. It was fun to chat with the new owners and college students staffing the shop. My husband and I both really enjoyed our scoops, feeling like the quality was quite similar as was the quantity and price. It was my first time stopping in on a whim. It's a decent sized shop with maybe four small tables or so not overly decorated or anything. Both the workers greeted me and were friendly. I got a waffle cone with a scoop of cookies and cream and a scoop of butter cake. Both were good neither were spectacular but the vanilla base of the cookies and cream had a nice flavor. The waffle cone wasn't as sweet as I would prefer but that's just me. I would come back if I were in the Oakland area. read more

I was super excited to try Dave & Andy's after I heard all of the hype around it, but it was a disappointing experience. They only allow you to sample one flavor, which is frustrating because most of their flavors are hit or miss. Some flavors are very weak and practically tasteless, so if I sample a disappointing flavor, I'm hesitant to commit to actually buying a scoop. on our midwest road trip, we have been trying the "best ice cream" in each city. pittsburgh has a lot but dave & andy's seemed to be a top choice. small interior. past reviews said only 1 sample but i asked for 2. service was okay. personally i did not think the ice cream flavor selection and taste was anything special. pricing: double for $5.14 (fairly average) flavor variety: there is an okay amount of flavors to choose from on their menu, from ice cream to yogurts to sundaes. they accommodate dietary restrictions. flavor uniqueness: i don't think dave & andy's had many unique flavors. many were pretty traditional that you can buy in a grocery store. when paying for ice cream at a shop, i gravitate toward unique flavor combinations and homemade flavors (ex: jeni's and salt & straw), so i was disappointed in this category. // flavors // oatmeal raisin cookie: i ended up getting this flavor because it was the better out of the ones i tried. it tasted as expected, and pretty sweet. didn't really have the creaminess and bigger chunks of cookies that i was looking for. chocolate raspberry: this one was also okay. it had chocolate and subtle raspberry, but was more on the milk chocolate side and was missing flavor depth to me. could have been better if it was darker or bittersweet chocolate with a stronger raspberry flavor. overall, flavors and ice cream were not memorable to me so i would not revisit. read more

I had my first and last ever scoop from Dave and Andy's this past week. The owners are retiring and the business has closed, but for what it's worth, I just wanted to commend the team for their extremely hard work and dedication during closing week. Some of my Pitt alum friends convinced me to try it and I'm sad I didn't sooner. The line was wrapped around the block each day and yet the staff still had smiles on their faces and were so helpful. The cookies and cream was delicious and we were able to get a pint of the vanilla almond caramel upon recommendation from Wes. So, kudos to all who worked here and happy retirement! I know it's a big loss to Oakland but I'm happy I got to experience a small piece of this special local business many of my friends have loved over the years. read more

I heard that this mom and pop ice cream shop is pretty popular so I had to try it out myself! I didn't realize how many recognition/awards they have received over the past two decades and their ice cream definitely lived up to the hype! I think they have different flavors every day. I very much enjoyed the kahlua cookies and cream! The kahlua liquor flavors came through nicely but in a subtle but creamy, sweet way. The cookie bits were similar to ones in your typical cookies and cream but they were very generous so I loved the high ratio of cookies to ice cream base. All of their ice cream is home made but if you go at the right time you can really see them prepping the ingredients. If you like cones, they have 3 options: cake, sugar, or waffle cone. I got my ice cream in their waffle cone, which was more like a wafer instead. It was thin and crunchy! Loved how big the servings were! Even a small size seemed like a medium/large at other places. Also loved the old school ice cream parlor decor with small counter top/chairs, benches, and colorful but washed out murals on the walls. Back in my undergraduate days, the Dirty O and Dave and Andy's were major components of my food pyramid. Not many food options were available in Oakland at that time. Fast forward a few decades, COVID-19 hits and cancels all of my traditional holiday plans (Phipps, Museum, PPG, etc). Scrolling through my social media feed, I see a post from Dave & Andy's about Peppermint ice cream is being made (see enclosed). It stirred up memories of my college days sitting on milk pails eating ice cream. I kidnapped a friend's children for an impromptu roadtrip on a school night. Where are we going? Have you taken us there before? Give us a hint... We walked in and a cheer was raised for ice cream. After they debated on cake, sugar , or waffle cone, being the smart adult ... let's get pints that you can eat at home (v. sticky fingers in my car). We ordered 7 different pints of ice cream. The bill was just over $40. We delivered chocolate chip cookie dough to their mom at work. She said it was the most incredible ice cream she has ever eaten ... I can't tell you the other flavors they picked. I know I went home with pints of cinnamon and peppermint. If you've had the upside down apple pie at McCormick & Schmicks, you've eaten Dave & Andy's cinnamon ice cream. It is just perfect. I haven't tried the peppermint ice cream yet. It's calling out to me from the freezer. Through the entire decision-making process, the young lady serving us was patient and kind. Flavors were debated before being ordered with military precision. The kids had a nice roadtrip. I reminsced of the "good old days". We supported a local small business owner. It was a great evening. A local gem is what Dave & Andy's is! A good friend of mine recommended the place to me and when I was in Pittsburgh I made sure to stop by. The inside of the store is very modestly decorated, as with the outside, with a few small tables and a counter area. Besides the relatively large sign, the place can be easily missed but you should DEFINITELY NOT miss it!! I tried a couple of flavors and went with the Apple Pie Yogurt and the Peanut Butter Chocolate. Truthfully, I was very much blown away by how fresh and plentiful the mix-ins were!! You could taste the big pie chunk and apple pieces in the Apple Pie ice cream in every bite. Similarly, the Penut Butter Chocolate had a smooth and strong chocolate flavor with plenty of peanut butter pockets and even actual peanut pieces. Everything worked well together and every bite tasted as good as the last one. Sitting there for awhile, I saw a constant stream of customers coming to get their share of delicious treat. It's on the Pitt campus in Oakland (not Pittsburg, according to the locals) and it would be a mistake to be in the area and not get some, regardless of season!
