Charming little ice cream parlor that's been around for decades, packed with nostalgia. Make sure to get/request a glass sundae cup to eat your ice cream in and not just a red solo takeout cup, which so many people were eating out. Really ruins the allure! Other than that, the Monster sundae, full of Oreo cookies and cookies and cream ice cream and hot fudge, was delicious. Was I like omg I have to come back?! No, but it was still a great evening treat.
Kalvon's is your classic ice cream parlor with the bar stools, booths, tile floors, and glass sundae bowls. They have a few spots out back but you will likely need to park on the street. The staff are attentive and make great recommendations. The flavor menu is sufficient to find something you like but is not as extensive as some ice cream chains. There are limited dairy free options. I tried the coffee ice cream and thought it was perfectly creamy and flavorful. The menu has a wide variety of sundaes so I may have to try one next time!
Klavon's is definitely one of my favorite ice cream parlors. The place has a good selection of ice cream to choose from. There is also plenty of seating. I had a ice cream sunday with coffee and chocolate ice cream and fudge and of coarse whip cream. The woman behind the counter was super friendly and very helpful. The customer service was outstanding. The ice cream is definitely one of my top two favorites in all of Pittsburgh. I highly recommend Klavon's for all your ice cream needs. It is definitely worth a trip don't miss out on a iconic Pittsburgh eatery.
What is not to love about this place. It's preserved history alone makes this a must stop place that you want to bring your family too when you want an old fashion ice cream parlor experience. The do have a side lot that can hold about six cars if you don't want to park on the main drag of the strip. There was a nice crowd in there tonight when we got here .. college kids and families in from out of town. Walk up to the counter - or sit at the counter on stools and order up your treat Tonight we had sundaes! Tin roof - peanut butter and jelly and banana splits for everyone! All made in front of us by the nicest ice cream ladies in the biz! In the past we have also had the ice cream cakes ($30) ...a must for your next party - they are always a hit with my family and not many folks know they do them! Enjoy!
This place is amazing! I had the banana split and it was sooo good! It is also cozy. The people who work there are also friendly.
Love this place! It's like stepping back in time! Excellent ice cream. I had the Mallow cup Sundae and it was the best chocolate ice cream I ever had. Excellent service as well!
Walking into Klavon's is like walking into a nostalgic dream. From the ice cream dishes to the candy-lined walls, Klavon's embraces the "vintage" ice cream parlor look. The ice cream sundaes and banana splits are to die for. My favorite sundae is the Cookie Doughlicious sundae; their cookie dough ice cream is filled with delicious cookie dough pieces that I feel most ice cream parlors lack. Don't let the "wee" size fool you... it's still huge! My only complaint is the steep prices. For two sundaes, my boyfriend and I ended up paying $14. It was worth every penny, but I personally feel that $7 for a sundae is a bit much.
Klavon's has great ice cream and arguably the best pecan ball I've ever had! The cookies n' cream is my favorite. It is loaded with oreo pieces and has huge chunks all throughout the ice cream. Just a wee scoop is enough for me, since it is really 2 full scoops of ice cream! The "Large Pecan Balls" are made of: Vanilla Ice Cream rolled in buttery pecans, served with your choice of hot fudge, chocolate, or caramel topping and whipped cream. Get the hot fudge! They are buttery, toasty, and crunchy! Then add in hot fudge over the frozen ice cream! The best combination and textures! The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the service is hit or miss. Often times the employees seem bothered when a customer comes in or they have to make their order. The service can also be very slow. We will keep coming back because the ice cream is amazing and the prices are right! They also have a few parking spots on the side of the building. Free street parking is available on that section of Penn Ave too! Stop by next time you are heading down to the Strip District!
I love ice cream. Absolutely love it. Klavon's is a must especially for a sundae. No one makes a banana split anymore. And they used real ice cream, not soft serve. The whip cream is fresh!!! Not redi-whip. Perfect for dates Perfect for people age 2-200. Perfect alone
Apologies for the long post, but the backstory helps...I think... Came here on Thursday Jan 4th when Klavon's was celebrating 2020 with throwback pricing to 1920! My wife and I walked up at 7pm and the line about a block long. We were a little nervous about getting served before 8pm when the doors were supposedly closing, but decided to stick around anyway. It turns out our fears were justified as we were at the doorstep when 8pm rolled around but not able to get inside due to the crowds within. Gratefully the security guard stationed out front let about 10 more of us stay while turning away all the others. There were roughly 40-50 people sardined into the building ahead of us, but the line moved relatively quickly and by about 8:30 our orders were taken. We got the Super Sundae (with brownie, vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge and candied pecans) and the Peanut Butter Sundae (with Reese's, chocolate ice cream and peanut butter sauce). Both tasted great, but the price of $0.10 for two sundaes was the best part of all! Would love to come back even with the 2020 prices.
Awesome turn back in time ice cream parlor. Complimentary popcorn while you wait for your ice cream. Totally nostalgic and if you are in the area get a sundae and enjoy that old time feeling in here.
Klavon's has been on my bucket list since we moved to Pittsburgh, and when they raised their minimum wage, I knew we finally had to go. We went on a Friday evening to have ice cream for dinner to celebrate a minor accomplishment. I tried using the wait in line feature on Yelp while we drove to the Strip, but I don't think it went through, which didn't turn out to be a problem. Although we snagged the last spot in the small parking lot, and there was nobody at the restaurant who appeared to be a hostess, it wasn't hard to get a booth or a table. The line was hopping though! Lots of folks coming in for ice cream in cheery red to-go containers. They no longer hand out laminated menus so that they don't have to clean them between customers, so we stood away from the counter and looked at the menu mounted on the wall. They have rigged up a large plexiglass screen between customers and workers to give a little safety from the virus, and the workers all wore masks. But most of the customers did not. We ordered sundaes to eat in. They came in adorable fluted glass containers. I got the turtle sundae with peach ice cream, while hubby got the strawberry cookie, both of which were delicious. Unfortunately, two scoops of ice cream in a container with such a narrow base meant that the ice cream on the bottom very quickly melted down the outside of the glass, but the ice cream on top was so hard that when I tried to use my spoon to take a bite, it just pushed out the caramel and chocolate sauce and then melted ice cream underneath. This made for a sticky volcanic mess on the table. Cannot recommend. Better to order your two-scoop (regular) sundae in a disposable to-go cup so that you can avoid the mess. Next time I'll just get a single scoop (wee size) if I want the vintage atmosphere of a reusable glass container. Plus, I checked in to get the wee sundae coupon to use in the fall/winter. Single use, one-gender-fits-all bathroom located outside the store on the sidewalk between the parking lot and the front. It has steps to get in and is not wheelchair accessible. Prices are reasonable and, surprisingly for an American establishment, the portions are not ridiculous. Will definitely come back to try other flavors and combinations. Last detail: we had a little laugh over the colorful mural on the wall by the little parking lot, in which an ice cream shop man blows sprinkles over cold sweet treats, because the little oblong shapes reminded us of bacilli. It's either a great or terrible illustration in the middle of a pandemic.
Came here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. Ordered their moose tracks sundae. What's hot - Menu. Good variety of selections- sundaes, sodas, single scoop, etc... - Quality. Ice cream tasted good, but it's not the best I've had. For example, Bruster's is probably better quality, flavors, and variety. Different strokes for different folks, but that's my two cents. - Portions. Our moose tracks sundae had a good amount of Reese's cups, which was great. It was added in between scoops, too, rather than just sprinkled on the side. - Free popcorn. They have a little popcorn machine and they hand out free popcorn. Always nice to have a savory treat, especially free treats. What's not - Hours. They close at 3pm, according to the info. Not very convenient, especially given that it's not located downtown. Ice cream is not limited to certain times of the day. - Layout. It's not great for groups. They have little tables, but it doesn't really hold more than 2-3. Their booths don't hold more than 4. It is reminiscent of an old parlor, but it's not conducive for groups more than 2. Be aware of who you come with and what time. Final Answer Willing to come back, but not a first choice.

The atmosphere is top notch. They are celebrating their one hundred year anniversary and have plenty of items throughout the shop that are a walk in time. Everything is handmade and delicious. They even have a kid center to keep the kiddos entertained while you wait for your order. We love it here! read more
I can only imagine how this place used to be back in the hay day. Nice little spot to hang out for ice cream. The server was friendly and welcoming. Free popcorn while you wait. Clean restrooms. Small variety of candy inside to purchase. Inside has a lot of old decor. Ice was standard as far as vanilla. Brownie was on the next level. Warm, soft, chocolatey. read more

Klavon's used to be my favorite ice cream place in the city, however the last few times I've gone I have been completely disappointed. The most recent visit is most likely my final time. It no longer feels like a fun step back in time but rather a run down, over priced ice cream shop. The kids area wasn't set up, most of the lights were out, the custom sundaes were literally just a scoop of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry (no toppings or sauces), the staff was inconvenienced by us being there and the smell of cleaner was so strong it was hard to taste your food. We got there around 5 because it was a birthday, ice cream for dinner treat, so it wasn't that they were ready to close. Ice cream was average, so sad but it's not worth another trip. read more

To the tune of "Levon" by Elton John Klavon, Klavon likes their honey They make a lot of ice cream, they say Spend their days churning In a garage by the Strip District They don't sell ice cream to paupers And they're closed on Christmas day When the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Said Fro-Yo is dead and the melting's begun Ben & Jerry have a son today As an experience I really recommend this place. Make sure you get a hot waffle cone, because that's what it's all about. The murals on the wall outside and the old-time feel of this place are worth a visit alone. The one problem is that the ice cream is sort of kind of pretty tasty but isn't always fresh and isn't the best I've had. Sometimes has crystallized ice bits inside it. However this isn't enough to drop it to a 4-star rating because it is still pretty good and the waffle cones are excellent and hot and delicious and I have a soft spot for this place. Plus I haven't found any ice cream places in Pittsburgh that are superior to this other than the chain from Ohio - Handel's. And I mean, that's from Ohio, so does it even count as a thing in this sporting-rivalry-rich part of the world? read more

I had wanted ice cream real bad. So bad that it was all I was talking about. I literally woke up from a nap and said, "I want ice cream." I continued this way until I got what I wanted. I feel as if I am one of the last people in Pittsburgh to make my way to Klavon's. I have constantly heard people talk about this place and found myself to be jealous of them. Jealous to the point where I would hide the fact that I went to Dairy Queen to get my fix. Finally, after a bit of whining, we arrived here. I was so excited, I wanted all the ice cream, that is until I had to make a selection of just one thing. I loved the way this place is set up. It's charming and quite relaxing. You definitely don't get to see places like this anymore. I am glad they did not remodel the inside of this shop. It gives us a glance at how things used to be run and, in my opinion, how future ice cream shops should look. After finally deciding we placed our order and decided to take a seat at the counter. Quite possibly the best place to have a seat. You get a front row seat to watch everything they have to offer be made. I had gone with The Cookie Monster and my better half went with Fruitopia. I cannot speak of Fruitopia, but The Cookie Monster was like chocolate paradise. Definitely go for the two scoops when you get a sundae. The glass gets a nice coating of chocolate syrup and then the scoops of cookies and cream ice cream go in, topped with crumbled cookies and there you have it. It is quite easy to make a mess while eating a sundae, but no need to be embarrassed by that fact. Definitely a satisfying way to end a hot night in the city. read more
Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor has a really cool old-fashioned vibe to it. They have awesome vintage wood booths as well as a classic marble counter with stools. The counter is closed because of COVID restrictions, but you can sit anywhere else in the place. They have so many different sundaes and split options. I split the "Strip District Split" with my girlfriend. It was a crazy amount of ice cream. We barely made a dent in it. The staff was super friendly and even let us customize our split; we were able to swap out two of the included ice cream flavors for others on the menu. The ice cream itself wasn't anything special. It is not the same quality as Millie's or Pages Dairy Mart, but it's outstanding value and a quirky little spot to check out at least once. read more

I was walking home from work and made sure that I passed Klavon's. Coming from downtown this store was just in the perfect spot to come in to buy some icecream to keep me going on the rest of the walk home. I enjoyed this break immensely. The inside of the shop was do very adorable. Vintage with a homey feel. Like you can get comfortable and enjoy your icecream but not too vintage that it felt like you were uncomfortable and could possibly break things. Just the right amount of new and old. I could not believe the menu was so long. The longer I looked at it the more I wanted to pick. I asked one employee what was her favorite, the cookie monster, and realized that I over looked that one! Cookies and cream icecream is my favorite so I stopped antagonizing over the choices and went with it. What a good choice! Cookies and cream icecream with hot chocolate fudge sauce, cookie crumbles, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. YES! THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED. I honestly can say the rest of the walk home was so much better. The one scoop Sunday was more than enough for me. I cannot wait to walk home again and to try more of the menu! read more
Really cozy ice cream parlor in the strip. They have a wide variety of sundaes, shakes, and sodas as well as regular ice cream scoops you can choose from. Everything looks pretty reasonably priced and from looking around, they definitely are generous with portions! I went simple and got a wee sized (yes, that's the size name) cookie dough ice cream. Can't go wrong with that! Even if it was a small, still was a nice amount of ice cream! My only complaint about the place was that we had to wait awhile for our wee sized and regular sized ice creams, and we only wanted scoops and not sundaes/shakes or anything but there were two people behind the counter. I wish it didn't take as long if you were getting something simple but it's okay, the shop itself is really cute and there's plenty to look at while you wait! read more
Klavon's located in Lawrenceville is one of the best ice cream places for the price! The kids sundae had a brownie 3 inch x 3 inches with a large scoop of ice cream and whipped cream! It filled me and another friend up for a great price! Look out for Free Sundae deals from Yelp as well read more

Ordered from uber eats tonight, and it was the fastest experience ever. The ice cream did not disappoint at all. I got the chocolate peanut better cup sundae, and I think they forgot to put the pb sauce on but it was still really good. My friend ordered the monster sundae and really enjoyed it as well. The quality of the ice cream was much better than I remember. It was really dense, yet fluffy at the same time. It was a nice refreshing sundae! I would order again in a heartbeat. They have lots of unique items on their menu, and it's certainly a great addition of have on uber eats. read more

Walked 30 mins to a place that states on Google and Apple Maps that they're open today until 9pm. Nope. Completely closed on Sunday's. Just because you are trying to be old school doesn't excuse bad business practices. I bet your ice cream sucks. read more

Cute old fashioned ice cream shop. When you first walk in you are greeted with old school candy: saucer wafers, candy cigarettes, and many more that remind me of my childhood going to the corner store. So many sundae options it was hard to decide on just one! I went with the wee turtle sundae-glad I went for the "smaller" one because it was still HUGE! read more

I came here amidst a winter storm and it was absolutely worth it. When an ice cream place can win my heart in non-summer months you know it has to be good. I really liked the fact that they have maintained their classic old-timey charm with the decor and uber nice employees. The ice cream itself was a vibe. We got the super sundae and monster sundae with two scoops of ice cream loaded with a bunch of toppings. I can't wait to come back and try all of their other flavors. read more
This is a great old fashioned ice cream parlor with excellent customer service! We walked here from the Strip District, which was a hearty walk but well worth it! The girls running that place were exceptionally nice!! All of them were so sweet and on top of everything! Great experience and good ice cream! I just hot a strawberry waffle cone with sprinkles and it was everything I needed after that walk! Can't wait to go again and try the pecan ball! read more
My friends and I stopped in here after being in the area. When you walk in, you immediately notice the decor. Lots of candy is displayed and also a very vintage appearance of tables, booths and other decor. I ordered the Retro Float. It had a carbonated cherry flavor with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was pretty good! My friend had a scoop of cookies and cream in a waffle cone (when she had ordered a cake cone...) but enjoyed the waffle cone because it was still warm! My other friends asked for a coffee shake, that was not on the menu, but they made it for her! Overall, the service wasn't the friendliest and we didn't exactly feel welcomed. This is why I'm rating it 3 Stars. read more
I had the butter pecan ice cream in English toffee soda and it was probably the most unique and delightful dessert I've had all year. I'm normally a chocolate girl but this dessert just sounded so different and it did not disappoint! The place was clean and the table tops weren't that leftover sticky like some parlors usually are. Very vintage decor and just an overall chill atmosphere. Nothing fancy. The staff was helpful, and let us sit a little while after 11pm when they closed so that we could talk to friends we had just met earlier that day from a different state. If we are in Pittsburgh again, I'd definitely stop by for another ice cream soda. read more
Delicious ice cream & very cute decor with old school soda shop vibes. Really enjoyed looking at the old phone booths & pharmacy displays. The ice cream was so good as well with lots of toppings on the ice cream. It feels kind of out there from the rest of things in the strip but it was worth the walk down. read more
