It no longer feels like a fun step back in time but rather a run down, over priced ice cream shop. The kids area wasn't set up, most of the lights were out, the custom sundaes were literally just a scoop of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry (no toppings or sauces), the staff was inconvenienced by us being there and the smell of cleaner was so strong it was hard to taste your food. We got there around 5 because it was a birthday, ice cream for dinner treat, so it wasn't that they were ready to close. Ice cream was average, so sad but it's not worth another trip. read more

I love the old school charm and delicious flavors of this little shop. There are several ice cream flavors with three cone options, sundaes, milkshakes and create your own options. I love the creativity of their sundaes and the large portions. The downside is that it is expensive and because everything is obviously made to order, it can take awhile to get served. Single serve comes were $5 and my sundae was $10. Considering it is homemade and supporting a local business it wasn't too bad but it was a lot more than I was expecting to pay for ice cream. What is not to love about this place. It's preserved history alone makes this a must stop place that you want to bring your family too when you want an old fashion ice cream parlor experience. The do have a side lot that can hold about six cars if you don't want to park on the main drag of the strip. Just a wee scoop is enough for me, since it is really 2 full scoops of ice cream! The "Large Pecan Balls" are made of: Vanilla Ice Cream rolled in buttery pecans, served with your choice of hot fudge, chocolate, or caramel topping and whipped cream. Get the hot fudge!They are buttery, toasty, and crunchy! Then add in hot fudge over the frozen ice cream! The best combination and textures! The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that the service is hit or miss. Often times the employees seem bothered when a customer comes in or they have to make their order. Get real. They're behind the counter, with no way to see them. You pick a flavor based on the name, and you wonder about the price, since there are no prices listed. Then you go back to the cash register by the front door. Hopefully nobody came in after you and went to pay first because they already knew what they wanted. I was warned that the credit card reader hasn't been working properly. I said I can do cash if that's easier. I was told that cash was not easier because they don't have much change. OK...? I had exact change, and two kid size scoops were about $11. The ice cream itself? Not good. Ice crystals throughout. I got the coffee flavor, and it was pretty bland. My wife got the peanut butter flavor, which was light enough on the peanut butter that it was essentially white. Her crystals were larger than mine, to the point where I could hear her crunching on them. Let's face it. Ice cream is good. But I struggle to think of a place that I've been to in my life that had ice cream that was worse than this stuff. I've heard that this place pays their employees a living wage, which is great. And the venue is retro cute. But you pick an ice cream place based on the ice cream that they serve. And I can't imagine ever coming back here. read more

Apologies for the long post, but the backstory helps...I think... Came here on Thursday Jan 4th when Klavon's was celebrating 2020 with throwback pricing to 1920! My wife and I walked up at 7pm and the line about a block long. We were a little nervous about getting served before 8pm when the doors were supposedly closing, but decided to stick around anyway. It turns out our fears were justified as we were at the doorstep when 8pm rolled around but not able to get inside due to the crowds within. Gratefully the security guard stationed out front let about 10 more of us stay while turning away all the others. There were roughly 40-50 people sardined into the building ahead of us, but the line moved relatively quickly and by about 8:30 our orders were taken. We got the Super Sundae (with brownie, vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge and candied pecans) and the Peanut Butter Sundae (with Reese's, chocolate ice cream and peanut butter sauce). Both tasted great, but the price of $0.10 for two sundaes was the best part of all! Would love to come back even with the 2020 prices. read more

Klavon's has been on my bucket list since we moved to Pittsburgh, and when they raised their minimum wage, I knew we finally had to go. We went on a Friday evening to have ice cream for dinner to celebrate a minor accomplishment. I tried using the wait in line feature on Yelp while we drove to the Strip, but I don't think it went through, which didn't turn out to be a problem. Although we snagged the last spot in the small parking lot, and there was nobody at the restaurant who appeared to be a hostess, it wasn't hard to get a booth or a table. The line was hopping though! Lots of folks coming in for ice cream in cheery red to-go containers. They no longer hand out laminated menus so that they don't have to clean them between customers, so we stood away from the counter and looked at the menu mounted on the wall. They have rigged up a large plexiglass screen between customers and workers to give a little safety from the virus, and the workers all wore masks. But most of the customers did not. We ordered sundaes to eat in. They came in adorable fluted glass containers. I got the turtle sundae with peach ice cream, while hubby got the strawberry cookie, both of which were delicious. Unfortunately, two scoops of ice cream in a container with such a narrow base meant that the ice cream on the bottom very quickly melted down the outside of the glass, but the ice cream on top was so hard that when I tried to use my spoon to take a bite, it just pushed out the caramel and chocolate sauce and then melted ice cream underneath. This made for a sticky volcanic mess on the table. Cannot recommend. Better to order your two-scoop (regular) sundae in a disposable to-go cup so that you can avoid the mess. Next time I'll just get a single scoop (wee size) if I want the vintage atmosphere of a reusable glass container. Plus, I checked in to get the wee sundae coupon to use in the fall/winter. Single use, one-gender-fits-all bathroom located outside the store on the sidewalk between the parking lot and the front. It has steps to get in and is not wheelchair accessible. Prices are reasonable and, surprisingly for an American establishment, the portions are not ridiculous. Will definitely come back to try other flavors and combinations. Last detail: we had a little laugh over the colorful mural on the wall by the little parking lot, in which an ice cream shop man blows sprinkles over cold sweet treats, because the little oblong shapes reminded us of bacilli. It's either a great or terrible illustration in the middle of a pandemic. read more

Came here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. Ordered their moose tracks sundae. What's hot - Menu. Good variety of selections- sundaes, sodas, single scoop, etc... - Quality. Ice cream tasted good, but it's not the best I've had. For example, Bruster's is probably better quality, flavors, and variety. Different strokes for different folks, but that's my two cents. - Portions. Our moose tracks sundae had a good amount of Reese's cups, which was great. It was added in between scoops, too, rather than just sprinkled on the side. - Free popcorn. They have a little popcorn machine and they hand out free popcorn. Always nice to have a savory treat, especially free treats. What's not - Hours. They close at 3pm, according to the info. Not very convenient, especially given that it's not located downtown. Ice cream is not limited to certain times of the day. - Layout. It's not great for groups. They have little tables, but it doesn't really hold more than 2-3. Their booths don't hold more than 4. It is reminiscent of an old parlor, but it's not conducive for groups more than 2. Be aware of who you come with and what time. Final Answer Willing to come back, but not a first choice. read more

Make sure you get a hot waffle cone, because that's what it's all about. The murals on the wall outside and the old-time feel of this place are worth a visit alone. The one problem is that the ice cream is sort of kind of pretty tasty but isn't always fresh and isn't the best I've had. Sometimes has crystallized ice bits inside it. However this isn't enough to drop it to a 4-star rating because it is still pretty good and the waffle cones are excellent and hot and delicious and I have a soft spot for this place. Plus I haven't found any ice cream places in Pittsburgh that are superior to this other than the chain from Ohio - Handel's. I had wanted ice cream real bad. So bad that it was all I was talking about. I literally woke up from a nap and said, "I want ice cream." I continued this way until I got what I wanted. I feel as if I am one of the last people in Pittsburgh to make my way to Klavon's. I have constantly heard people talk about this place and found myself to be jealous of them. Jealous to the point where I would hide the fact that I went to Dairy Queen to get my fix. Finally, after a bit of whining, we arrived here. I was so excited, I wanted all the ice cream, that is until I had to make a selection of just one thing. I loved the way this place is set up. It's charming and quite relaxing. You definitely don't get to see places like this anymore. I am glad they did not remodel the inside of this shop. It gives us a glance at how things used to be run and, in my opinion, how future ice cream shops should look. After finally deciding we placed our order and decided to take a seat at the counter. Quite possibly the best place to have a seat. You get a front row seat to watch everything they have to offer be made. I had gone with The Cookie Monster and my better half went with Fruitopia. I cannot speak of Fruitopia, but The Cookie Monster was like chocolate paradise. Definitely go for the two scoops when you get a sundae. The glass gets a nice coating of chocolate syrup and then the scoops of cookies and cream ice cream go in, topped with crumbled cookies and there you have it. It is quite easy to make a mess while eating a sundae, but no need to be embarrassed by that fact. Definitely a satisfying way to end a hot night in the city. read more

The counter is closed because of COVID restrictions, but you can sit anywhere else in the place. They have so many different sundaes and split options. I split the "Strip District Split" with my girlfriend. It was a crazy amount of ice cream. We barely made a dent in it. The staff was super friendly and even let us customize our split; we were able to swap out two of the included ice cream flavors for others on the menu. The ice cream itself wasn't anything special. It is not the same quality as Millie's or Pages Dairy Mart, but it's outstanding value and a quirky little spot to check out at least once. read more

I was walking home from work and made sure that I passed Klavon's. Coming from downtown this store was just in the perfect spot to come in to buy some icecream to keep me going on the rest of the walk home. I enjoyed this break immensely. The inside of the shop was do very adorable. Vintage with a homey feel. Like you can get comfortable and enjoy your icecream but not too vintage that it felt like you were uncomfortable and could possibly break things. Just the right amount of new and old. I could not believe the menu was so long. The longer I looked at it the more I wanted to pick. I asked one employee what was her favorite, the cookie monster, and realized that I over looked that one! Cookies and cream icecream is my favorite so I stopped antagonizing over the choices and went with it. What a good choice! Cookies and cream icecream with hot chocolate fudge sauce, cookie crumbles, whipped cream, and a cherry on top. YES! THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED. The strawberry was neon pink and there was nothing dipped about it. The rest is just your average store-bought products, so the whole experience is just someone throwing together a supermarket purchase. Staff seem miserable and were on their phones the whole time. The place was dirty and unkempt and it actually felt somewhat depressing to be in there. What a departure from Page's! This used to be my favorite ice cream spot, but it has changed. I stopped in today for a hot for Sunday with raspberry frozen yogurt. All I got was some kind of raspberry slushy with no hot fudge and half a cup of whipped cream. She served it in a tall cup with a small spoon that did not even reach the bottom of the cup. I really liked the fact that they have maintained their classic old-timey charm with the decor and uber nice employees. The ice cream itself was a vibe.
