We decided to save room for dessert after dinner next door at Sesame Inn, and unfortunately, Betsy's left much to be desired. The flavors were different, and they were out of chocolate (to the chagrin of the 3 little ones with us). I ended up trying the banana ice cream which was fine but tasted very artificial. The others with us got peanut butter sundaes and said the peanut butter tasted like it was out of a jar. Also, the teenage boys working behind the counter were not very friendly or helpful. We visited Betsy's Ice Cream as a result of Visit PA's 2023 Scooped Ice Cream Trail. It was the 3rd place we have been to this summer. The variety of flavors, in my opinion, were for a more mature palate than the three rugrats I brought with me. The portions were generous. The prices were very reasonable. A public parking lot is less than a block away. I would come back again without my chicken finger and fries group to enjoy some of the other offerings. read more

Pros: Super cute place for ice cream, they have so many different flavors which made super fun for us. I can't recall all the odd flavoring but the one we did get was something Pittsburgh since we were in Pittsburgh visiting and it was perfect (dark chocolate pieces in chocolate) and we also selected something blue (forgot the name of it) - my daughter liked it.. And we had chocolate with marshmallows.. also very good. They will let you try then also before getting. Another fun part is, afterwards we went on a short walk down the street, some really cute shops, coffee place.. just a very chill vibe neighborhood (so come before 5 though since everything is closed shops wise- coffee place was still open, along with a couple of other restaurants).. Meter parking - 50 cents per hour before 5pm, free after 5pm... we were looking for an ice cream store and just happened to come across this place after going to another one that was closed.. a fun random discovery and fun random area we haven't ever been. Today was my first time hearing about this place. I was going somewhere else initially but then I saw this on the way and decided to stop in. It truly was an experience! Since I never have been here before I wanted to try all of the ice cream flavors and the employee was very helpful and she made it very fun. She also did not mind that I took photos and videos of her. Both of the young ladies were very nice. I taste it almost every flavor, maple walnut, butter pecan, burnt almond, peachy, strawberry pretzel salad, and so many others that I cannot remember. I ended up purchasing two single scoops of maple walnut and strawberry pretzel salad and I am highly satisfied. I will definitely be there again!!! I had to come back to edit this review because I noticed the second time that I went (today) that the scoops are VERY small. I wish I would've overcome my anxiety sooner. Due to the location of the shop being in a place that is utterly chaotic, lacks convenient parking, and only offers late weekday hours, I have strayed away. However, the time was now; I wanted to support them for having such substantial ownership, caring for their employees and customers. It was well worth the stress getting there. They have a wonderful array of flavors to choose from, and they offer sundaes, as well as other assorted menu items. I always go for as unique as possible when I visit shops such as these, so I went for the strawberry pretzel salad, (as well as Monongahela Mud to take home). OMG is it one of the best ice creams and creations that I have ever had!!!! The ice cream texture/consistency was spot-on, and the flavor was immense. 10/10 all-around. As for the prices? It's what you would expect for the quality of the ice cream, and especially the location fo the shop, where most customers can afford to pay more, so ya, it's on the higher end, but still competitive to other local shops of the same quality. If it was just a little lower, I would've bought a bunch of pints to bring home, and would gladly battle the insanity of traffic and parking to go back often. Finally, the place itself. It has that old school soda shop kind of feel, like it's been there forever. They offer indoor and some outdoor seating. Plus, the biggest and grandest factor of them all--they are very covid safe. Betsy's used to be my favorite ice cream shop but it has sadly gone downhill. I went earlier this summer and they were out of a lot and the service wasn't as good. Tried going again today. I waited several minutes and no one came out to help me so I left and went somewhere else. I can't believe I've never been here and it's in my own back yard!! I guess because we're big fans of Scoops which is closer. We went today and all I can say is yummy! I had the Pittsburgh special...not really sure what they call it but it had crushed Oreos, fudge and a bunch of stuff I can't remember. The ice cream itself was kinda orange yellow (perhaps Pittsbugh gold?). OMG it was soooo good! Hubs got the cookie dough and said it was amazing as well. Betsy's ice cream truck came for a party. They arrived on time and did a great job. I was running around a ton so didn't realize that the music the truck was playing was drowning out the party music. Congratulations to Betsy's ice cream on 5 wonderful years of serving the community! It is opening day and I wanted to treat my hubby to this great little shop in the heart of Mt. Lebanon. I met up with Ryan the business owner who told me about some of their plans for the future. They still carry farm sourced all natural ice creams including our hometown favorite Pittsburgh Pride which is black and gold ice cream with chocolate chips and some cookies in it. Among the new flavors are salted caramel. The fixings bar is still there for $1.75 where you can get unlimited toppings for your cone or dish. Got some of the Pittsburgh pride and I was still able to add on to the rewards card I had saved from last season. This is one of my favorite ice creams they sell. My husband got the French vanilla. He thoroughly enjoyed it. The chalkboard tables are still there for the kiddies. Take out containers are in their freezer and nearby a water cooler. So onto what's next. Ryan told me they sell Zeke's coffee from East Liberty by the pound for the same price you would pay if you bought it there. He gave me a list of their blends and if there is a particular one I wanted just call the store and they will bring it over.At this point they are not selling individual cups. In addition, they will soon be acquiring products from Sinful sweets located downtown and it is they want to add to their home delivery service. For example he mentioned putting together a package from Uptown coffee, Sinful sweets, some their ice cream, and a few other goodies then deliver it. I was intrigued by the concept and thought it was a great way to give back to the community. I am anxious to see it get off the ground especially for people who can't make it here for various reasons. It will be a great way for them to sample some of the best the city has to offer and I'll be happy to support them in any way I can. They make quality ice cream. I have been here on two occasions so far. The first time I would definitely give 5 stars. The vegan chocolate ice cream was so delicious and creamy! The next time, they had vegan chocolate listed, but after waiting in line for ten minutes we got up to order and she said they were out. A little bit annoying because we would not have waited if they would have simply erased it from the board. So this time, I tried their sorbet, it was not really even tasty. Betsy's has probably some of the best ice cream in town. Their homemade selections are very varied and always tasty. They have very interesting flavors that cannot be found elsewhere. Best of all, the prices are affordable unlike other "gourmet" ice cream shops. The only thing that I would complain about is their service. Service here is inconsistent; sometimes delivering spectacular service while other times it's not something to write home about. Wow did this ice cream hit the spot! I stopped at Dairy Queen to get my friend some chocolate soft serve, but they did not have any (I know). Betsy's does not have soft serve, but they do have a fancy double chocolate chip ice cream that filled the bill. After the girl behind the counter loaded on some sprinkles, I had to choose my flavor! I tried a sample of lavender raspberry, which was a fascinating flavor. It wasn't a flavor I could eat a whole dish of, but it was super unique and fun. When I could not decide, she recommended the salted caramel. I loved it! All of the ice creams were so creamy and amazing. I found the prices to be really reasonable, as it was under $5 for both scoops. I know people seem to be up in arms about the price, but I just paid $5 for a terrible scoop of ice cream at Millie's in Shadyside. After Kay confessed to a craving for ice cream after our dinner at Mount Lebanon's newest dining sensation, BnDz Burgerz and Dogz, to Betsy's we came to give the old gal another chance, and we're happy we did. The flavors of the ice cream were much more toothsome, and the portions were far more magnanimous. This time, my hot fudge sundae included a scoop each of the following: Pittsburgh Pride (a 'black 'n gold' ice cream made of yellow cake batter, brownie batter, fudge ripples, and Oreo crumbles), Apple Pie, and Salted Caramel. MIA was the whipped cream. Oh how my heart sank when the server showed me that white, shiny, fire extinguisher-sized whipped cream dispenser only to discover the hard way that they were out of the stuff for the evening. No matter, for the trio of flavors coated with that liquefied candy bar might have been tamed too much by the inclusion of the foamy, dairy cloud. The Pittsburgh Pride, one of those flavors I knew would be amazing upon first glance, was my favorite of the three as it tasted like a frozen, goodie-filled birthday cake sans icing, containing crunchy texture and gooey, Milk Dud mouthfeel for days. The Salted Caramel was a bit understated at first, until the sea salt plugged an amplifier into the sweet caramel after it sat in my mouth and melted for a few seconds. The Apple Pie ice cream contained real chunks of caramelized apple and baked crust along with strong notes of cinnamon to awaken the palate. Betsy, all is forgiven, sweetheart. Just make sure you have that canister full of whipped cream at the ready when next we visit, 'cause the lady and I got ourselves another go-to for the frozen moo moo. read more

What you gonna do...get some ice cream...homemade ice cream! Yum! We were walking by a couple of weeks ago when Betsy's first opened up and the kids didn't want any cuz we just had dinner upstreet. Well, last night they decided they needed a treat and off to Betsy's we went. Rich and creamy ice cream, all homemade, some different flavors. I had a scoop of the coconut chip and it was delicious. As to size and price: it was a standard one scoop and only $2. They do sell it by size and I ordered the one scoop or "small". The place is nice, newly painted and clean with some chalkboard tables. Service was friendly and they did spend a few moments answering my questions about the business and making of ice cream. read more

Sometimes when I get to a place, I think, what took me so long?! This, my friends, is one of those places! Since being a new South Hills resident, I refuse to start the "there's nothing in the South Hills" argument. So I go in search. And sometimes there's hits and sometimes there's misses. This is definitely a hit! Betsy's is a two fold treat. One because they specialize in some funky fresh flavors. I'm not even a fan of lavender, but I loved the lavender raspberry! I actually went through and tried like six flavors! I'm gonna have to say the Pittsburgh Pride is probably my main jam because I love cake batter, I love brownies and I love some chocolate fudge drizzle! But if you like quirky flavors, this has gotta be a stop on the ice cream train for you! So the cherry on top is literally that you can top your ice cream with a bountiful supply of sweats over at the toppings bar. I mean, c'mon! You already have this gourmet flavored ice cream and you want more? Some people love the decadence (me included!), but I think for your virgin venture here, go for the simple samples of ice cream. Ice cream - five stars. Everything else - two stars. I had vanilla and mint mayhem and they were lovely! The flavors rotate and the ice cream is made in house - awesome. The cons: tough parking, setup is confusing, signage is hard to read, staff isn't very friendly. It could be a really cool place, the foundation of a great product is there, for sure. But I couldn't read some of the signs, I didn't know how much anything cost, there is some kind of unlimited self serve topping bar but I didn't know it existed until after I had already ordered. The ice cream is REALLY GOOD. Basic flavors and some fancy ones too. They could work on the placement and readability of their signage. Maybe some staff training too, for example, sell the customer on the topping bar. Make your own waffle cones for god's sake, if you're going to go to the effort to make your own ice cream, don't put it in some prefab waffle cone! You can park in the parking garage up the street for free or $1 depending on the time of day. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely stop in. They're going to have to up the experience factor for me to make a special trip. read more

We hired the ice cream truck with Betsy's for our 400 person family pool party for the Bible Chapel families a couple weeks ago. Ryan, who runs the communication for the truck was really difficult to communicate with along the way (emails back every 2-3 weeks answering one question and wouldn't call when I asked for a quick phone call to confirm) and then started to be 100% unresponsive towards the end. I called the shop the week before my event and they said they would talk with him and have him get back to me a few days before my event. He just never showed up. We had tons of kids that were super excited about an ice cream truck and I wish that he would've communicated that he wasn't coming so I could've found somebody else. Honestly really rude and unprofessional. I called and left a message 30 minutes after he was supposed to be there and no one got back to me either. In the end, I should've just ditched him, but because we had agreed to work together, I didn't want to hire another truck and have him show up. Would definitely not recommend this business for their ice cream truck. read more

Betsy's is a local gem. The icecream is so creamy and thick and flavorful. The milkshakes are also a hit. My favorite flavors are: Pittsburgh Pride Blueberry cheesecake (always get it if it's there) Lemon Rosewater (surprisingly good, the rosewater is not strong at all and makes for a refreshing scoop) Salted Caramel Lavender Raspberry (again, surprisingly good and not overpowering with the lavender - worth a taste) I crave Betsy's even in the coldest winter day.
