The vegan ice cream here has come a long way! Two years ago I said it was "gummy" and I didn't even have that word on my mind today. It was so soft and creamy and flavorful. The blueberry lavender was delicious and there were real blueberries in the ice cream. The chocolate chip cookie dough had the best texture. It tasted like cold cookie dough instead of ice cream. The third and final vegan flavor was a blueberry pancake! I didn't try it but it seemed delish. Such good vegan flavors. Just a heads up, if you want two flavors, you can't do a half scoop of each flavor. You have to get a double. Thankfully it wasn't much more expensive! This is good ice cream, no doubt about it. They have a lot of different options and the classics as well. They have a few daily options that change depending on the season. And vegan options too! Vegan options that actually sound delicious. I decided to try the peanut butter fudge milkshake. Wow, the shake was very thick! Nearly too thick. But, the flavor was great. The base was a rich chocolate. It seemed high quality. There are streaks of peanut butter throughout the ice cream. Even little bits of peanuts in the ice cream, but I wasn't a fan of this. Not much liquid fudge. It was topped with a generous amount of whipped cream. I would have enjoyed it more if the base was peanut butter, but it was still really good. The portion size was great. While I'm not vegan, I prefer vegan ice cream when it's an option and their flavors are amazing! I've had red velvet, dulce de leche, and chocolate cookies and cream (or a similar name) and would eat all three again, happily. My "complaints" are no big deal really. I'd love for them to have regular sugar cones - cake cones are not my fav and waffle cones are a bit too much for me. I'd also love for them to have kid sizes - I *can* eat a lot, but try to keep my ice cream servings little (so I can have it more often...haha). Would also love for them to be open longer hours, but understand from a business perspective that may not make sense. Pittsburgh has some great vegan ice cream and Lawrenceville is - happily - pretty saturated. And Frio is one of my favs. One of these days I have to try a vegan shake! read more

Stopped by this weekend for a late-night ice cream and was so impressed! I'd been here previously a few years ago and it was just a little chaotic inside, from my memory. Flash forward to now and FRIO is sparkling clean, organized, and chock full of amazing ice cream flavors from the Penn State Creamery (hello, Grilled Stickies flavor). Truly, every option sounded incredible. I had half strawberry, half "Monkey Business," which was banana, chocolate, and peanut butter swirls. My husband had the aforementioned Grilled Stickies and "Monster Dough", which was cookie dough with peanut butter, oatmeal cookie dough, and M&Ms. The service was quick and friendly, and I was happy we stopped in! They do have a few small outdoor tables, but we ate in our car as it was a bit chilly outside. There are currently no indoor tables or seats, just as an FYI, but don't let that deter you from stopping by and trying some great ice cream! read more

FRIO is a small ice cream shop that has a load of unique flavors for ice cream and offers sundaes, milkshakes, and has a plethora of different toppings to choose from. My girlfriend loves a brownie sundae, so as soon as she saw it on the menu, she knew that she had to get it. The sundae came with a generously sized brownie topping with loads of hot fudge and sat on top of an ice cream flavor of your choice. She went with mint chip, which is one of her favorites, and it paired really nicely together. The ice cream was super creamy and tasted really fresh, along with the brownie as well! I decided to get two scoops of some of their different flavors, the Rocky Mountain raspberry and the Monkey business! Both of them came loaded with different toppings in the, and I wanted to taste the ice cream just as it was, so I didn't see the need to add additional toppings to my ice cream! I got a small with the flavors piece of cake and arboretum breeze and my friend got Oregon blackberry cheesecake and caramel praline. We both really enjoyed all the flavors we got!! The location is centralized (right on Butler street). Parking can be a little tricky if you're stopping by during the day, but if you're a late night ice cream run type of person like I am, then you'll never have an issue finding parking on a weekday. It is metered (paid) parking during the day, but of course at night it is complimentary. Finally, the price - honestly you CANNOT beat it for the portion and quality. I stopped at FRIO Creamery recently with my wife and enjoyed their ice cream and the service. When we arrived, a teenager was pondering what to order with a friendly and patient staff member. By listening in on this conversation, we were able to have many of our own questions answered, as well. You might ask, "What's so confusing about ice cream?" Here's the thing- FRIO Creamery sources their ice cream from Penn State's outstanding Berkey Creamery. All of the ice cream I've had from the Creamery are rich and delicious. Thing is, if you're not familiar with the Penn State Creamery, you won't really know what's in "White Out" (popcorn-flavored ice cream with white chocolate chips), Happy Happy Joy Joy (a riff on Almond Joy), Alumni Swirl (vanilla ice cream, mocha chips, blueberry swirl), etc. They also have a bunch of specialty milkshakes that sound delicious. So many questions would be answered by adding a sticker with a list of ingredients for fancy flavors and milkshakes. I'd love to see this simple addition, which would save the staff from hearing the same questions over and over again. In any case, their ice cream is wonderful. I had a medium waffle cone (4 smallish scoops) split between Happy Happy Joy Joy and Grilled Stickies (a cinnamon bun in ice cream form). Both flavors were wonderful and exactly what I expected. Be aware, Grilled Stickies is sweet and heavy on the cinnamon, which may or may not be your thing. The waffle cone was fresh and had a marshmallow in the bottom to prevent leakage. My wife enjoyed her small cup of Peachy Paterno. She was thinking about White Out, but decided against it after trying it out (she thought it was funky). The staff was very happy to let customers try flavors out while deciding. Their ice cream is not cheap ($3 for a small, $4, for a medium), but it is reasonably priced for the quality of product. "Hail to the Lion!" FRIO Creamery is the 2nd ice cream store that sells ice cream from Penn State's main campus renown creamery in our region. During my visit I learned that the owner goes to State College once a week and purchases ice cream for sale or for milkshakes. You are permitted to sample whatever flavors they have in stock. I asked about dairy free options and was told they don't have any since the campus doesn't sell them. I crossed checked this information when I called the actual creamery at home and learned that they don't make vegan ice cream at this time but are working on it. I saw that they charge $1.00 extra for a waffle cone so I asked if they had regular cones. I was told that they didn't have any at this point. Toppings are $.50 each. Among the samples I tried were "just peachy" formerly known as peachy Paterno, "death by chocolate", strawberry, and coconut. For some reason with the exception of "death by chocolate" the others seemed to lack the richness of flavor. I also verified on that on the phone with the creamery and learned they are still using the name " peachy Paterno." I decided on the death by chocolate and went with two scoops. I should have only done one because I ended with 4 generous scoops all for only $5.00! There is an indoor bench and on a warm day they do set up a couple of chairs to sit outside. Believe me "death by chocolate" is exactly that-to die for! After I was finished I chatted with the counter lady about additional flavors and if they plan to stay open year round. The owner came over and explained to me that they had not made that decision yet. It depends whether people want to purchase take out containers for home use. They do have additional flavors in the back but they don't at this point have enough space to put them out. In addition to ice cream you can purchase regular milkshakes and specialty milkshakes is what they call them. Comparing this ice cream to Krum's creamery in Elizabeth who also sells from the Penn State creamery, Krum's wins hands down but the drive is far. On a closer note is Klavon's which replicates the creamery flavors in their apothecary style shop not too far away in the Strip district. However, this ice cream store is a welcome addition to the Lawrenceville neighborhood since there is only one other ice cream store here which is "rolled ice cream." Final thoughts: This is indeed a very good ice cream store. Prices are reasonable and I was indeed pleased with my selection. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Giving latitude to the fact that they had recently opened I'm giving "wiggle room" to see what will happen in the coming months.
