The vegan ice cream here has come a long way! Two years ago I said it was "gummy" and I didn't even have that word on my mind today. It was so soft and creamy and flavorful. The blueberry lavender was delicious and there were real blueberries in the ice cream. The chocolate chip cookie dough had the best texture. It tasted like cold cookie dough instead of ice cream. The third and final vegan flavor was a blueberry pancake! I didn't try it but it seemed delish. Such good vegan flavors. Just a heads up, if you want two flavors, you can't do a half scoop of each flavor. You have to get a double. Thankfully it wasn't much more expensive! Definitely worth it and I will recommend this spot moving forward.

They were pretty patient and let us try multiple samples before we decided on what we wanted. Sadly there is no kids sized scoop but the single scoop is only about $4.50.
Friendly staff, nice options, I just made the wrong choice on flavor. I made a snap decision and ultimately got popped. Next time I will get a milkshake, they have some really good looking flavors and recipes there.
I got the vegan pistachio with a gluten free cone it's so delicious! The inside of the place smells so sweet! They make their own waffle cones! Definitely recommend this place!
My family and I loved the takeout ice cream we ordered. I ordered online and it was ready really quickly. We were shocked that it was ready once we got there after about ten minutes. Everyone loved their ice cream choices. My mom loved her Death by Chocolate. It was all so creamy and delicious. I'm obsessed with cinnamon and I loved my Grilled Stickies. My goddaughter is super picky and loved her BitterSweet Mint. My cousin loved the banana flavor in his monkey business ice cream. My husband loved all things peanut butter in his Nutty Bon Bon. My godson loved all the cookie pieces and peanut butter in his Monster Dough. So happy we finally got to try it. So good! Check them out.

Vegan options that actually sound delicious. I decided to try the peanut butter fudge milkshake. Wow, the shake was very thick! Nearly too thick. But, the flavor was great. The base was a rich chocolate. It seemed high quality. There are streaks of peanut butter throughout the ice cream. Even little bits of peanuts in the ice cream, but I wasn't a fan of this. Not much liquid fudge. It was topped with a generous amount of whipped cream. I would have enjoyed it more if the base was peanut butter, but it was still really good. The portion size was great. Although, it is pretty costly. I'm talking almost $10 for a milkshake. All in all, it's a great place to get a treat. Not the most cost effective, but the quality is great, and they have many diverse and delicious options to choose from. I would recommend trying them out.
The staff working there are incredibly sweet. This is an awesome place to stop by when you're in the area. Very generous scoops and a great array of flavors! There's a little outdoor seating for evenings after a dinner/event. However, I will say the flavor I got wasn't incredibly robust if you're looking for a rich, creamy coffee flavor.

This was a wonderful spot and there are a few tables and chairs on the outside where you can sit and enjoy!
Frio is definitely my favorite place in Pittsburgh that I've been for ice cream. I may be biased as a Penn State alum, but they carry Penn State creamery ice cream and you just can't beat that. Even though I'm vegan now and can't enjoy the creamery ice cream I love that they carry it and you can get it in Pittsburgh! I also love Frio because they have vegan ice cream and it's so good! Every time I've seen at least 3 vegan flavors. I love the vegan pistachio and the vegan blueberry lavender flavors.
I loved the Penn State creamery ice cream that I had here -- the grilled stickies ice cream was amazing alongside the banana pb chocolate (I think called Monkey Business). This was my first time here and I would return again to try new flavors. There were many that sounded delicious!

Very good ice cream (and I'm not even a Penn State alum). Servers were nice and offered tastes. No seating inside but the few outdoor tables were fine. After going to college at Cornell, which is also well-known for their ice cream 'Dairy Bar', I was skeptical that Penn State's ice cream could compare to my alma mater's. It was hard to tell if any of the flavors were specialties, since the ones available all seemed to have pretty generic names, so I went with 2 scoops of 'Death By Chocolate.' It was super creamy and chocolatey, with generous chocolate chunks. The biggest con for me was that there wasn't really any seating options to just take a moment and enjoy the ice cream. In the far corner of the narrow shop, there were only 2 chairs, and since it was the middle of winter, no chairs were set up outside like those I had seen in photos (presumably taken during the warmer months). As a result, we had to take ours to go and I feel like that took away from the overall experience. read more
Went here with my wife and parents. There is so many ice cream places to choose from we decided to start with Frio Creamery. I had 2 scoops one of coffee and one of chocolate. The staff where friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the ice cream very much. I definitely would go back to Frio's again. read more

Many years ago when I was a little girl ...my cousins that lived in Pa said we MUST go to the creamery for the best ice cream in the world ...well now that ice cream is here in Pittsburgh as well as me who decided to move to this awesome city ! Ah ice cream who can resist such creamy cold treats not me of course and as soon as I realized this ice cream was from the famous creamery Penn State Berkey creamery I got in my car and drove the few miles over. I ordered a happy happy joy joy shake coconut ice cream almonds and chocolate chips creamy yummy. Lots of cool flavors like keeney beany, death by chocolate Waffle cones and sund They do not have a seating area But there are a few rocking chairs outside Parking can sometimes be a hassle as it is in Lawrenceville but it's worth stopping by for this ice cream read more

Pistachio Baklava is my favorite flavor here. Cute ice cream place on butler street. They have good choice of flavors. You'll find some good vegan options as well! They serve it on home wade waffles . They also do great milkshakes. I got the death by chocolate milkshake. The servers are really very friendly and accommodating. Parking on butler is always tough to find but that should never stop you from trying out icecreams! I recommend! read more
Hands down my favorite spot for milkshakes in Pittsburgh!! I've tried a lot of ice cream & shakes in the city, and I haven't come across one that tops Frio (it's better than the Millies hype). My go-to milkshake is the strawberry cheesecake. The fried ice cream milkshake and the Oreo milkshake are also very good. Large portion sizes for cheap. If you're ever in lawrenceville & have a sweet tooth, Frio is a must! read more

Delicious, very clean, cute little ice cream shop. They carry Penn State creamery and Perry's ice cream; plus they make a couple of their own. On 9/8/21 they had 4 vegan flavor options! You can get a cup or cone, sundae or shake. And they have at least 20 different toppings to choose from. They had a great variety of flavors, the service was excellent. We will be back. read more

Please....if you are in the area eating dinner (or lunch)...SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT. I'm so glad I did. Because this place's ice cream is out-freakin-standing. The store was clean, and the service was very friendly. They have a nice selection of unique IC flavors, and sundae and shake combinations. I had the Fried Ice Cream Shake, and I can't say enough good things about it. The first sip reminded me of enjoying the honey-topped fried ice cream at Chi Chi's back in the day. Do yourself a favor and get some ice cream here! read more

Cute spot! The space is small, but they have rocking chairs outside for you to enjoy. It's Labor Day weekend and it's 90 degrees. Ice cream sounds delightful. I walk in and was welcomed. There are 12 or so options, including a rotating flavor. The mint ice cream speaks to me in this weather. The lady working offers samples to try, if something interests me. Tempted by the peach, I pass and go all in for the mint. It wins! Slight hint of natural mint, I find it refreshing. A one scoop is $3. (Though it's slightly more than a mere scope.) Several patrons were curious about the spot and walked in to scoop it out in my 5 minutes there. Go in, try, just do it. read more
Wowwwwwwww I had somewhat discounted this place after walking the dog past its storefront every day for the last many months. The store itself is start (and honestly somewhat boring) compared to the bright and jazzy Millie's down the street. On this particular walk down Butler I noticed a long list of vegan ice cream on their sandwich board so decided to try. I got a small vegan pistachio in a sugar cone and, good god, if it wasn't the best thing I've had all month. The ice cream was light and tasted exactly like my favorite desert, Turkish baklava. I realize I'm in the minority looking for vegan ice cream but this was by far the best I've ever had, and at better prices than it's competitor down the street. I was absolutely be coming back regularly. read more
Stopped by this weekend for a late-night ice cream and was so impressed! I'd been here previously a few years ago and it was just a little chaotic inside, from my memory. Flash forward to now and FRIO is sparkling clean, organized, and chock full of amazing ice cream flavors from the Penn State Creamery (hello, Grilled Stickies flavor). Truly, every option sounded incredible. I had half strawberry, half "Monkey Business," which was banana, chocolate, and peanut butter swirls. My husband had the aforementioned Grilled Stickies and "Monster Dough", which was cookie dough with peanut butter, oatmeal cookie dough, and M&Ms. The service was quick and friendly, and I was happy we stopped in! They do have a few small outdoor tables, but we ate in our car as it was a bit chilly outside. There are currently no indoor tables or seats, just as an FYI, but don't let that deter you from stopping by and trying some great ice cream! read more
My girlfriend and I have been trying to find some of the best ice cream places in Pittsburgh, and next on the list to try was FRIO creamery! FRIO is a small ice cream shop that has a load of unique flavors for ice cream and offers sundaes, milkshakes, and has a plethora of different toppings to choose from. My girlfriend loves a brownie sundae, so as soon as she saw it on the menu, she knew that she had to get it. The sundae came with a generously sized brownie topping with loads of hot fudge and sat on top of an ice cream flavor of your choice. She went with mint chip, which is one of her favorites, and it paired really nicely together. The ice cream was super creamy and tasted really fresh, along with the brownie as well! I decided to get two scoops of some of their different flavors, the Rocky Mountain raspberry and the Monkey business! Both of them came loaded with different toppings in the, and I wanted to taste the ice cream just as it was, so I didn't see the need to add additional toppings to my ice cream! Both flavors were awesome, and I thin it is super cool how they have such unique flavors that separate them from other ice cream places in Pittsburgh! We can't wait to come back for more! read more
I visited with my friend during COVID and I was pleasantly surprised! The selection of flavors were pretty unique and they also had vegan flavors! I got a small with the flavors piece of cake and arboretum breeze and my friend got Oregon blackberry cheesecake and caramel praline. We both really enjoyed all the flavors we got!! I would recommend piece of cake and Oregon blackberry cheesecake. Overall, the entire process was smooth and fast. Also a small was only $3.75!! Such a steal. I honestly prefer this place over Millie's. Definitely check it out for a good dessert :) Pro tip: Make sure to push the door pretty hard to get in (I struggled) read more

One scoop of Birthday Bash and one scoop of Death by Chocolate with Nutella and Chocolate Syrup! Absolutely delicious!! A nice small creamery in Lawrenceville. Great selection of Ice Cream and milkshakes. They also have Vegan options which is great and appeals to a wider range of people. They let you sample the different flavors, which is also another plus! "Hail to the Lion!" FRIO Creamery is the 2nd ice cream store that sells ice cream from Penn State's main campus renown creamery in our region. During my visit I learned that the owner goes to State College once a week and purchases ice cream for sale or for milkshakes. You are permitted to sample whatever flavors they have in stock. I asked about dairy free options and was told they don't have any since the campus doesn't sell them. I crossed checked this information when I called the actual creamery at home and learned that they don't make vegan ice cream at this time but are working on it. I saw that they charge $1.00 extra for a waffle cone so I asked if they had regular cones. I was told that they didn't have any at this point. Toppings are $.50 each. Among the samples I tried were "just peachy" formerly known as peachy Paterno, "death by chocolate", strawberry, and coconut. For some reason with the exception of "death by chocolate" the others seemed to lack the richness of flavor. I also verified on that on the phone with the creamery and learned they are still using the name " peachy Paterno." I decided on the death by chocolate and went with two scoops. I should have only done one because I ended with 4 generous scoops all for only $5.00! There is an indoor bench and on a warm day they do set up a couple of chairs to sit outside. Believe me "death by chocolate" is exactly that-to die for! After I was finished I chatted with the counter lady about additional flavors and if they plan to stay open year round. The owner came over and explained to me that they had not made that decision yet. It depends whether people want to purchase take out containers for home use. They do have additional flavors in the back but they don't at this point have enough space to put them out. In addition to ice cream you can purchase regular milkshakes and specialty milkshakes is what they call them. Comparing this ice cream to Krum's creamery in Elizabeth who also sells from the Penn State creamery, Krum's wins hands down but the drive is far. On a closer note is Klavon's which replicates the creamery flavors in their apothecary style shop not too far away in the Strip district. However, this ice cream store is a welcome addition to the Lawrenceville neighborhood since there is only one other ice cream store here which is "rolled ice cream." Final thoughts: This is indeed a very good ice cream store. Prices are reasonable and I was indeed pleased with my selection. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Giving latitude to the fact that they had recently opened I'm giving "wiggle room" to see what will happen in the coming months. Located next to the Merchant oyster company on Butler St in middle Lawrenceville, metered street parking is available. read more

Came to visit pittsburgh for the day and my god was it hot out. After walking around all Sunday afternoon, I realized most places were closed because of the day of the week/covid but then I found FRIO! They were open till 10pm and had four vegan flavors that I believe are house made! I got the vegan chocolate chip cookie dough and some vegan pistachio too. I haven't had pistachio ice cream since going vegan two years ago and this blew me away. It's not that fake pistachio flavor and you can taste and see the crushed nuts in it! It was sooo good. I was expecting the cookie dough to be more like a tradition cookie dough you'd get at a grocery store but i still really liked it. The flavor and consistency were good. This was a medium, 4 smaller-ish scoops and came to $5 and some change! Not too bad especially for something vegan which usually costs more! read more
