Customer service is awful. The staff always has a piss poor attitude. Not only do the employees have an awful attitude but the establishment is also filthy. I saw someone drop cups on the floor and put the cups back on the shelf. There are so many better ice cream places in Pittsburgh that are worth visiting. The line moved quickly. I got the Reese's peanut butter fudge sundae. I could have used more Reese's cups personally, and it wasn't the prettiest sundae I've ever been handed. But the taste was there which is what matters. My friend got the ice cream nachos. The waffle chips were definitely stale. I wish they would have been made in house instead of something that looked like it came out of a box. One of my favorite soft serve stops in PGH. It's tucked away on Main street among neighborhood houses. Small hole in the wall joint run usually by 1-2 people. They now accept card and have an expanded menu that included nachos! There is rarely a line but even when there is it goes by quickly. The ice cream servings are huge and well worth the price tag (which is pretty cheap!) They have oat milk ice cream and non-sugar options in hard ice cream too which I've never seen before so it's neat that they are being inclusive. It's a walk up window that you order from, so expect to either eat in your car, walk around the neighborhood, or hope that the 1 bench out front the store is available to sit at. Three words: Cheap water ice! After a walk in Allegheny Cemetery yesterday afternoon (Memorial Day), CM and I were hot. After checking to ensure that I had cash, I suggested that we stop by for a cool treat, and he assented. Fortunately, when we pulled up and parked, I saw a sandwich board sign on the sidewalk stating that they were open. Hooray! My original plan was to order a cone of soft serve ice cream and have it dipped in chocolate topping and then in sprinkles. However, the woman working told me they didn't have chocolate topping (?!?), so I had to change my plans. CM was intrigued by the water ice (Italian ice), since he'd never had any, and decided to order one. I decided to do the same, since I'd been looking for an alternative to Rita's (bleh!), but water ice is surprisingly difficult to come by in the Burgh. I asked the woman what brand it is, and she informed me that it's Hershey's (I wasn't even aware that Hershey's made water ice, but apparently, they do, and it's sold under the Via Venetto label.) For our water ices, CM ordered watermelon flavor, and I ordered tie dye, a combination of lemon, lime, and blue raspberry flavors. The tie dye was a nice combination of tart and sweet flavors, but I wasn't a huge fan of the watermelon, since it tasted rather artificial to me. The texture was velvety, as is appropriate for water ice, and it was cold enough that it didn't melt quickly. Best of all, the price was right ($2.14 w/ tax for a small)--a dollar cheaper than Rita's, which is overpriced IMO, and with comparable or better quality. (I'll have to see if I can get them to make a gelati!) Oddly, despite the claim that they didn't have chocolate topping, I saw a kid with a cone that appeared to be dipped in just that. I'll have to try ordering that again next time to see if this was a fluke. Regardless, I'll definitely be stopping back here soon to get another fix of cheap, delicious water ice! read more

After dining at Hambone's to wait out traffic migraines, we decided to give ourselves some migraines of a sweeter, creamier kind. Meh. They don't have any dips for soft serve which I think is pretty stupid. BF got the strawberry banana Italian ice which was a large portion and he seemed to enjoy it. I had the salted caramel truffle in a cone. It was generous for the "1 scoop" order. It was tasty but it's Hershey's ice cream so it's not something that can't be found anywhere else (specifically, scoops right up the street.) Service was fine. Instead of taking both of our orders and then preparing them she took his order, got his dish, and then came back for my order. I didn't think that was the most time effective method but that's splitting hairs. The inside was closed when we came by so there's nowhere to sit except one bench on the sidewalk. There was a really bad smelling overflowing garbage can right next to the bench with flies swarming around so we decided to take our ice cream on the walk back. Overall, it's basically a Hershey's ice cream vendor. The ice cream was tasty and I didn't have to wait long for it. Nothing special though. Plus they have REAL Slush Puppies, old school style. It's a little confusing when you walk up, you can't tell whether they are taking orders at the window or inside the shop. Minor problem though. I was forced to deduct two stars, however, after I visited today. I ordered a small cookies and cream "Flurry" and was shocked, nay, FLABBERGASTED to learn that this place, which has the nerve to call itself a business, uses FAUX Oreo cookies.
