I am used to eating at Darbar in San Francisco which is also a Pakistani/Indian place with a buffet lunch. This place is really good, maybe some of the best Tandoori chicken I have ever had at a buffet or otherwise. The Malai Chicken was awesome as was Kheer (rice pudding) was also some of the best I have ever had! I will definitely be coming again! read more

I moved to the area in September 2016 and have probably come here 10-15 times since to get a lunch buffet plate to go. I went in today (3/1/17) to do the same thing and was told that they don't offer a to go option for the buffet. After explaining to the man that I had done this numerous times before, he agreed and told me it would be $10. I filled the plate with a normal amount of rice/chicken and went to the counter to pay with a $20, expecting $10 in change back. Another employee took my $20 and left to get something in the kitchen. When he returned, I asked him for my change and he again left to talk to the original older man that had given me difficulties about offering a to go option for the buffet. The man told me that I "had enough food for three people" (lol) and that my total was $20. I asked him how even a large plate of food (which this wasn't) would be any different than having the buffet at the restaurant and filling my plate multiple times and all he could say was "eat in - OK". I wasn't in the mood to argue with this man so I just asked if he really believed that $20 was a fair price for how much food I had and he awkwardly wandered back to the kitchen. At this point, I had given up on getting my change to I just left to get back home and eat. As I'm pulling my car out of my parking spot and into traffic, the older man comes out of the restaurant waving me down, expecting me to stop in the middle of traffic. I have no idea what he was trying to do but he stayed outside staring at my car until I was out of sight and it was overall just a really strange experience. Authentic South Asian food! It doesn't get any more real than this. The service may be lackluster, the ambience almost sketchy, but the food is amazing. Beware that their dishes are very, very spicy and quite oily. I can only take so much without risking serious heartburn or worse. But I'll take that over the garbage most Boston area South Asian restaurants serve. Hands down one of the best restaurants for Pakistani and Mughlai cuisine. The kebabs are flavorful and juicy, and the haleem (a thick, mashed paste of lentils, wheat and beef, heavily seasoned) is always consistently delicious with their laccha paratha (flaky, thin bread). Their standard North Indian dishes like chicken tikka masala etc are some of the best renditions in town. The palak paneer has such a fresh taste with huge chunks of tooth-squeaking paneer. Service is always prompt and courteous. My wife and I have been coming here for years, and we're always met with a warm smile and service from the owner. This is one of the best Pakistani food I've had. I love in Texas and this restaurant is better than the Pakistani food we have here. The customer service is the best and they treat all their customers very nicely and gives great recommendations. One thing that stood out was the naan, their naan was one of kind it's better than any other naan I've had. I recommend their nihari, saag, and mango lassi. #Cheap #Poorhospitality I went with my family, and ordered 6 main courses plus an entree which was highly recommend by the owner and wait staff: Chicken 65. I've had Chicken 65 several times, and their chicken 65 was "pathetic". The chef was neither able to maintain the usual crispy strong south indian flavour nor it has correct ingredients - it tasted like regular wings. Besides that, we ordered Haleem, (Yashni) Mutton Palau, Saag, Maghaz (Brain Masala). Palau was a mix b/w biryani and matar palao and it was made with lamb as against mutton as it was advertised. Maghaz (Brain Masala) had a very strong flavour of channa dal, which I believe was mixed with actual brain chunks to save money. I wouldn't recommend saag unless you are a super big fan of sarsoon ka saag, while, there was no garam masala / chaat masala provided with Haleem, which I felt was important ingredient, and lacked the usual haleem flavour. Finally, the wait staff was quite annoying to the point of bothering us consistently with his remarks and questions. Moreover, as we were actually having our food, he was sarcastically pointed out that the my brother's baby girl had made a mess, she's a toddler 10months old, her mother was feeling her rice and a handful of rice grains had fallen down on the table and the floor, he actually removed the baby chair just to have a good look without showing even a slight bit of concern for our convenience. I probably could have said something but decided to kept my calm and stayed quiet just to avoid creating a distasteful scene for my family. And, when the final bill arrived we noticed that one of the items were $15.99 which was the entree, this was actually more expensive than Brain Masala, most main courses were b/w $8-15. I wouldn't have ordered chicken 65 at a Pakistani restaurant but the wait staff insisted and mentioned that this was introduced recently. Clearly one horrible experience, definitely wont go again and neither recommend to anyone! read more

Preface: California (Bay Area) native and Pakistani food junkie who has not for the life of me been able to find comparably yummy Pakistani cuisine in Boston. Where mah Pakistanis at, yo?! Even if this place sucked, I would have given 1 star for the service. A friendly man approached our table with a warm, genuine smile (much better than many waiters who don't even look at you until it's time to greet you and suck up for a tip). He asked where I'd heard about their restaurant. "Yelp! I've never been here before. You better be good!" He made some smalltalk and asked where I went to school, which was flattering since I've been out of school for almost 4 years. Must be the same reason I still get ID'd at bars. :) I always stick to my tried and true Anglo regulars: onion naan, chicken tikka masala, and PALAK paneer -- known as SAAG paneer in many places, but they call it PALAK which to me guaranteed that they are true Pakistanis and know what's up. Took one bite of the chicken tikka masala and I was like, holy mother of God, I've found it! The Holy Grail of Pakistani food in Boston! THAT'S what I'm talking about. It's exactly what I spent 4 years in college eating; exactly what my tummy craves when I'm on an Indian food mission. Remember, India is a huge country with many distinct cultures and distinct cuisines. It would be unfair to say all Indian food is the same. I wish I knew more about Indian cooking and spices so I could more precisely detail the difference between Pakistani food and the majority of Indian food in Boston. Here's my laywoman's attempt at detailing how Darbar stands out. Chicken tikka masala: more watery than I'm used to, but the spices were right. It was a sweet, light orange color with no dark chunks floating in it. Color says everything. Punjab Palace in Allston is red, thick, and analogous to tomato puree; Bukhara in JP is a delicious close second but it's a darker orange with dark bits. Darbar's creamy, smooth tomato-y concoction was just right. PALAK paneer: topped with cilantro, the same green bits I remember my Bay Area faves being topped with, so I knew it was good to go. Again, color and consistency told the whole story: DARK green, not a light green, not filled with ghee that would coalesce if you left it alone for a half hour. Also, notably, many Indian joints overdo the ginger in their saag/palak paneer. I get chunks of ginger in some bites which is just gross because it's a very overpowering flavor. OR, I get bits of something that tastes vaguely like jalapeño or green bell pepper. I don't know what it is, but it isn't good, and it isn't the Pakistani I'm used to. My only complaint is the spiciness. I requested VERY HOT and it was mild. Next time I will emphasize "no, seriously, I want mouth-burning, don't think just because I'm a white chick that I'm not being serious!" Sometimes I think they look at Americans and think we can't palate the level of spiciness that they can provide. Think again, Darbar. Give it to me full-blast, I'm begging you! I will be back, no doubt about it. Thank you Darbar for being true Pakistani in a city with no significant Pakistani population, and also thank you for being close enough to deliver to me! We went to this restaurant during Ramadan. We wanted to order from the menu but were coerced by the owner into ordering from the aftaar buffet. Afterwards the owner came to our table and started rebuking my Hindu friend for drinking water before prayer time. We told him that she is Hindu and she doesn't have to fast but he kept on insisting that she was being disrespectful. Interestingly he didn't stop a white family sitting next to our table from eating. Another time when I went to this restaurant, the owner when handing us our bill noticed that my friend had some food left over in her plate, he made it a point of rebuking my friend for not finishing her food saying she was brig disrespectful. You usually don't get good quality Indian food around Boston, and what tops Indian food? - Pakistani food. Its a delight to have them around. I've been ordering from Darbar since two years now, and their quality of food is soo much better then the rest I've had around Boston. I think they are really kick ass at lamb preparations. "Balti gosht" is a must to try. Beware of the quantity though, coz its thrice the size of regular portion. Their kheer is so wonderful, that you can feel the rice being cooked in milk, unlike rest where rice is just added to sweet milk. Chicken preparations are really good and the seekh kababs are a must try. The people there are extremely friendly and delivery service is good. After moving to Brighton a couple months ago, I found myself driving by this restaurant on my way to work in the morning. After doing some laundry on a Saturday, my boyfriend and I decided to try it out. When we entered it smelled heavenly!! They were doing a buffet, which is a little unusual considering it was 9pm (the restaurant is open till 11, which is awesome!) The servers seemed a bit timid, and I wasn't sure if the counter were they were seated was the front of the restaurant, some people were eating, and talking amongst each other. My boyfriend got the buffet and really liked the options. I made a comment about it not having bread and how that was weird, but then speak of the devil, hot buttery bread came out to him (made to order bread is so much better!) For my vegan mean I ordered the okra, and pakoras. The veggie pakoras are the best I have ever eaten! They were very flavorful and delicious! The tamarind sauce that accompanied them made them that much better. The okra was also very delicious, but a bit oily, if they cut back on the oil it would also be the best okra I have ever had. The service needs a bit of work, it was kind of hard to hear the servers when the spoke (they were very quiet) and didn't really introduce themselves or say anything other than "ok". But she was knowledgeable about the vegan options and which vegetarian dishes had dairy in them. Which is a plus :) But I would definitely recommend coming here! read more

I'm usually a BIG fan of South Asian cuisine, but this was not exactly up to snuff... in terms of taste or cleanliness. Perhaps it's because it was a slow time... but that's not really an excuse, is it? The food was not exactly memorable, though it was swimming in oil (that much I -do- recall) and the inside, though it was larger than I had expected from the exterior, was reminiscent of those episodes of Kitchen Nightmares where Ramsay just sits there and shakes his head. Sigh. I was so excited to try this place for a while, but now that I know what I'm dealing with, I won't be back... there are MANY other South Asian eateries out there that are far superior. I'm not one to get Indian food too often, But I came across this place with a co worker of mine, and the food was great! I ordered the food for take out, but upon stepping into the establishment I noticed they had an all you can eat buffet and it was actually a very very nice dining area. I thought to my self I need to come back here sometime with some friends and enjoy the food and rich atmosphere with them. However the food was the main reason I would be coming back. The rice and samosa was divine. All perfectly cooked and had just a wonderful kick of spice to it. However one thing I had never had and decided to try was the goat. I got to say what a good choice! The flavor, texture, and quality of the goat tasted amazing; I instantly fell in love. However it was a bit bony as a con, I suppose nothing can be perfect. With an idea of eating authentic Pakistani food and good previous experience. I and my husband invited our friends (Pakistani couple) for a dinner. Which ended up with embarrassment and regret. Place is good lacking some fancy decor but sometime its really fine to have good dine with less shine. A guy came with a friendly smile after heartly greetings he tried convincing to have regular buffet not ordering. The reason was a large Arab family for a dinner. We preffered ordering as we wanted to try some of their specials. After some wait a tired looking girl appeared with a mouth watering menu. I and my husband ordered Chinioti Kuna and chicken tandoori and our friends wanted chicken karahi and biharee kebobs. After some time same poor girl appeared with embarrassing smile and apologies that food we ordered was not available. Then we asked for few other things from menu but her answer was in negation. So finally we ordered Chicken boti tikka and chicken karahi and our guests wanted some dish ( I dont remember exactly) which was supposed to come with rice according to girl. Food arrived in parts. Our guest noticed that he didn't get rice with his order. He asked for it and was told that he misunderstood the menu ( in fact it was that girl who told him while he was ordering:P) Chicken karahi was not really impressive this time it and rice were little greasy. Mean while that large Arab family seemed to be not really happy for the food. They had complaints that food spicy and greasy. At that point that talkative guy with a bluetooth ear piece was on his toes and trying to please unhappy customers with whatever he could do. This all proceeding was quiet loud and disturbing. It seemed like if the only customers in the hall were that Arab family because as were not taking care of other customers. Glasses on our table remained unattented no one came for refilling or to ask "Are you finding everything ok ? :P". I remember he even put on some Arabic song to cool down angry customers. The only thing that I found good was there Kashmiri tea. May be it was their bad day or busy timings but It wasn't a really good experience overall. We've ordered delivery from them a few times now and can't say enough about how much we love it! Their food is spicy, rich, flavourful, and exceptionally well cooked. Highly recommend the daal gosht and the malai kofta. Haven't had a single thing yet that I didn't love and it's a bit annoying because the order just gets bigger every time because we want to try new things, but have to get the old faves. Great delivery food! Pros: Great Chicken Tikka Masala, Palak Paneer and Onion Kulcha. The Tandoori Chicken Quarter is also tasty and a great deal for $4. Cons: The samosas were not the best. Perhaps a different style than I'm used to, just a bit dry. There are plenty of other great things to try instead. Also you have to order rice and even then they don't give you much. Came here the other night with two other Pakistanis for some good ole home cooking. note: Indian and Pakistani food, while similar, have some differences. One, Paki cuisine uses more beef and meat than Indian food and less all vegetable dishes. Second, Paki cuisine has more grilled dishes like chicken tikka's and and kabobs. 3 dishes of note that are distinctly Pakistani that Dabar offers are Nihari, Paya, and Haleem- boy were they good; not quite as good as mom's but then again I didn't expect it to be, i LOVEEx333 her cooking. They offer a dinner buffet that included about 8 dishes + rice and unlimited naan. the naan were made fresh and brought straight to our table which is super super awesome since most places use pre cooked frozen naans; here they was hot, fresh, and ahhhhmazing. they charge like $12 for the buffet which is not bad at all for the quality,variety, and quantity of food available. We asked for an order of Nihari, it came in a deep bowl with 3-4 huge pieces of beef and a ton of the juice/marinade. $12. pretty bomb, and definitely a solid portion for 1-2 people to share with a couple naans We ended our meal in true south asian style. With some tea. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they served Kashmiri or pink tea; i jumped at the chance and boy was I happy I did. it was rich, pink, sweet, it totally reminded me of home. goood stuff -The reason why I'm more than happy to review a place like this and give it 5 stars is because it was clear the people of Darbar restuarant love what they do and they do it with care. NIhari is a dish that takes 6-8 hours to prepare, Kashmiri tea takes 45-1 hour to prepare. Neither of these things are quick fixes. they take time to make right. Fresh Naan brought table side during a buffet is not easy, they kept bringing them out for us with a smile. Our water glasses were filled constantly and the owners of the restaurant came over a couple times to make sure that we were enjoying our food. My friend and I came here after we bought a coupon on Restaurant.com. We went on a Tuesday night, we ended up being the only people at the restaurant, but it was nice because we were able to talk with the host/owner and he told us stories about the restaurant and recommendations on the food. The food was great- big portions, lots of flavor. My one request would be that they include rice with each entree instead of charging you extra for the rice. Most restaurants include rice with each entree. I want to come back to try out the buffet- they have it for dinner and lunch. I'd recommend the restaurant to people who enjoy Indian/Pakistani food and want to go off of the 'beaten path' a bit. I consumed the most succulent chicken tikkas, the finest shami and chapli kebabs, the most kadak chai, the freshest and tastiest naan, and the ultimate curries --- Ohhhh the curries --- ALL IN BOSTON! After two long years in the Boston/Cambridge area looking for a decent desi place - I had lost all hope. Darbar turned it all around. No other place comes close to the quality of food here. Between my tiny friend (who I can never thank enough for introducing me to heaven) and I, we ate 4 plates of kebabs, two plates of curries, three naans, and two chai. And we were told that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was to make a visit over the weekend before his grand show. I live next door to Darbar so I come here often - I usually order the chicken tikka masala, the karahi gosht (goat), or the fish curry. Every dish I've tried here is fresh and uniquely crafted. My only complaint is that rice isn't included with any of the main dishes. As a bonus, I have a friend named Darshan, and I've started calling him DARBAR! from time to time. Great food! We had the chicken tikka pieces and the Bihari Kabab. The chicken was tasty and succulent - which is rare in Pakistani style tandoori dishes in restaurants here. The Bihari Kabab were not the way the traditional ones are, but they still tasted amazing! The naans were also good. We also ordered the biryani, but I would really not recommend that. It did not have the richness in flavor and it seemed like they had added too much turmeric. The service was good and accommodating. They close at 10.30 and we arrived at 10. This place is absolutely wonderful. The food is halal, which is a plus, and the owner is very strict about the meat quality. The meat is absolutely AMAZING, and much, much better than the stuff you find in most non-halal restaurants, even. The owner is a very energetic and charismatic Pakistani, and his little son often runs around pretending he's lighting the tandoor. So cute! I came here multiple times, with my immediate family. We all agreed that this is most definitely the best desi restaurant in Boston. The buffet always has a terrific selection of dishes, veg and non-veg, and the quality is consistently awesome. The spicing is done just like any desi mother would! The decor is pretty classy, but not gaudy like Kabab and Tandoor in Waltham. There is a flat-screen TV in the corner which plays bollywood songs, and sometimes nasheed or Naat in Urdu and Punjabi. The whole experience is awesome, too. I had even asked for raita (which WASN't on the menu) and they brought it! for free!! (extra star for that alone). We went here on a friend's recommendation but I don't think I'll ever come back here. This place is overpriced and NOT clean.. !!!!! I mean we are not picky at all and I dont care as long as the food is good but the salt container was so dirty It had food stuck on it from god knows when. What pushed me to write this review is that while we were having dinner the party next to us left and the waitress started cleaning the table. The rag she used smelled like vomit and the whole place started stinking within seconds. This is the first time I have ever been to a place this unconcerned about cleaning. I haven't had a bad meal here, yet. My favorite is the Goat Briyani. The lunch and dinner buffet are great ways to try a variety of different dishes. The Chicken Tandour was delicious and well cooked. Service is pretty friendly and the restaurant is very clean. I saw that someone added a picture of a rock in their food. THAT WASNT A ROCK! it's a spice. It's a hard pod that has a bunch of flavored sends inside. It's not to be eaten--kind of like a bay leaf. Yes, it's Halal. Darbar is exactly what Boston's desi scene needed: A full-fledged Pakistani Dining Kitchen. I can't quite call it a restaurant. Just didn't feel like the kind of place one would go for a good evening out. Just scrumptuous food like your mom made it if she ordered it from a high volume behemoth takeaway from back home like Lasani, Karachi Darbar, or Dehli Nihari. The atmosphere is very casual, which is just as well: I don't think they'd be able to pull of a "dining experience" if you will. You might wonder why I rate this place 4 stars then. One look at the menu will tell you why (note there isn't a menu on the website yet). An array of awesome dishes extending as far as the eye can see an please flip over for more! This place holds a lot of potential if they can deliver on the promise the menu makes. I personally went for the Iftar buffet last night, and found it to my liking. The pakoras were good (B+), the Keema Tawa(?) was really good (A), and the chicken salan i tried (couldn't identify it) was average (B). My only complaints with the Nihari (B+) were that they didn't serve it with the fixings (ginger, green chillis, cilantro, etc.), an oversight which deserves some demerit. However, I'm happy to report that the after meal chai (A+) had me overlooking some of the minor quips i had. At $10-$15 an entree, the place is moderately priced but the food is worth it, and I found the staff cheerful. Please please dont go this restaurent, we stopped by to this restaurent to have lunch but food was stale(previous day foods) and smelling bad and no Indian/pakistani food taste(why they kept the name "Darbar") trying to misguide people. I went to peak lunch time and there were only one customer apart from us. I never seen any indian/paksitani restaurent serving brown rice. I just wanted to let people know dont go by its name "Darbar", there is nothing to eat literally. read more
