I have been fortunate to be able to find and dine at several Himilayan/Nepalese restaurants in the Boston area, and every one of them has so far been a great experience. Tonight, I added Momo Masala to that list. I was also fortunate to have friends who live nearby, and when I mentioned to them I was going (hopefully to invite them), they said it was one of their regular places for take-out. But they also informed me that they did not have a liquor license. But that recently changed!! They now offer beer, wine, cocktails, and whiskey pours - none of these are huge amounts, but there are certainly enough options for any of these. Our group of 4 did sample several cocktails. They aren't super fancy (though some drinks do have garnishes or salty/spiced rims), but everything is well crafted. Momos first, if course. They offer several varieties, but if you prefer yours steamed, read the menu carefully, as not all varieties are available steamed. We got vegetable and chicken momos, the chicken ones in a broth. Their medium level of spiciness provided a nice but not overwhelming kick. Our entrees continued the high quality. Their chicken tikka masala has a very dark and rich sauce, and the chicken chunks were tender. The lamb was equally good. The naan here (we got garlic) is very crisp, just the way I like it. This is a popular take-out spot, but there are enough tables to accommodate people who dine in conveniently, with a relaxing ambiance. Wow. Just wow. We ordered takeout and got two types of momos, one veggie and one chicken, in two different sauces, jhol and hariyali. First of all, just the fact that they have these different sauces for the momos like jhol, hariyali, and tandoori put them a notch above the rest. On top of that, the flavors were absolutely drool worthy. The momos were delicious by themselves but then you have the sauce and that elevated the dish to the next level. My wife and I stumbled into Momo Masala on a summer Jamaica Plain evening, and it immediately felt like we'd found someone's cozy kitchen halfway around the world. The space has that "neighborhood gem" energy -- small, warm, and full of spice aromas that make you hungrier the longer you sit. We started with the Samosa Chaat, and honestly, it set the tone for the whole meal -- tangy, crunchy, and full of flavor layers that made it hard to stop eating. The Saag Paneer was rich and comforting, and the Chicken Kadhai had just the right balance of spice and savoriness. The Garlic Naan came out warm, buttery, and perfect for scooping everything up (and yes, we definitely fought over the last piece). What really stood out, though, was the staff. They were genuinely kind and attentive -- the kind of service that makes you feel like they actually care if you're enjoying your meal. And for all that food, the bill came to around $60 -- incredible value for how flavorful and filling everything was. I tried Tandoori veg Momo for the first time. It's interesting as it's similar to dumpling but different. I'm ok with the fillings but the sauce is good. But the sauce is very salty. The mango lassi is ok. The mango flavor is not that strong. I also tried the vegManchurian (Indo-Chinese) dish. It is my first time too. Even though it doesn't remind me of anything Chinese, but the taste is the best of the day. Even though it's very salty again. I'm not sure if they were designed to eat with bread/naan/rice. I ordered medium spiciness and it has the right kick (American level spicy). I gave 3 stars mainly for the saltiness of the food. The service is good. And parking is easy to find around the block. Came with a friend after a long walk at the park and the food definitely satisfied our hunger! It is a casual and friendly establishment serving delicious Nepali and Indian cuisine. WOW! What a treat to welcome Himalayan food to JP. And such incredible food it is. Make sure you try not just the classic Indian dishes like tikka masala and palak paneer, but the momos from the end of the menu. I haven't had Himalayan food before and really enjoy the combination of spices. A+ for allergy safety, lots of options for people with nut or wheat allergies, and a big vegan menu! Momo does a lot of take out business and they're fast and reliable. Eating in is also very pleasant with a bright sunny space and extremely good waitstaff. I enjoyed the music and the ambiance in general. There aren't many tables, so on busier nights you might need a reservation. There is one big table in a separate area that would be nice for a group of 8-10. The best part of eating in was eating the food right out of the oven- the garlic naan smelled so good and tasted crispy and delicious. I love this restaurant and I'm so glad they opened! read more

Great to have a Momo place in the neighborhood. Ambiance: Decent, sitting, tables, decor, etc. However, place seems a bit small. That being said I got a table right away, went around 6:15 PM. Service: No complaints here, the staff are friendly, and they did allow me to do a half and half on the types of momo, which let me try two types. Food: I got medium level spice, so wasn't too spicy, but also intentional because wanted to see how flavors were. The flavors in the momo were great. I ordered Chicken Tandoori Momo and the Chicken Hariwali Momo Masala. I preferred the Hariwali. They give 10 in one order, took the rest home, so would recommend splitting the order if with someone. Laccha Paratha was good. GREAT chicken curry, the blend of spices, bell pepper, onion reminded me a a bit of Kanda Bateta Nu Shak. My next item to try will likely be the Eggplant Bhartha, there menu seems to have a lot of variety. read more

We picked up takeout from Momo Masala and were very impressed! The most noteworthy dish was definitely the veggie pakora. We ate the whole box in minutes! The pakora had the perfect mix of veggies and the sauces and chutneys it came with were INCREDIBLE. We also got the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan which were good, but not the best we've ever had - a hint too much coriander in the Masala for my liking. Regardless we would definitely order again and next time are getting TWO orders of veggie pakoras! read more

We have come in person twice with my toddler since they opened and have also gotten delivery once, which is saying a lot because they've only been open for a little over a month at this point. It's so nice to have a really good Indian/Nepali spot in JP finally! I was happy to see Gobi Manchurian on the menu, which was really tasty, although having gotten the veggie momo masala and veggie biryani tonight, I'd say those dishes are actually the winners for me now. I've only ever had steamed momos previously, but the momo masala momos here were bathed in an absolutely delicious spicy tomato based sauce. I literally said out loud-- "these are incredible!" I've never had anything like them before and they were so good! The veggie biryani was also really good. My partner has enjoyed both the chicken and lamb vindaloo-- he says he liked the lamb version the best. And, my picky toddler has scarfed samosas every time we have gone there (to the point that tonight he very excitedly greeted the waitress with his request for a samosa and apple juice, lol). Speaking of which, the waitstaff are incredibly friendly and helpful. They remembered my kiddo and his samosa enthusiasm, which warmed my heart. So pleased to have momo masala in the neighborhood! Newer restaurant - wanted to give it a try and the curry/momo was good (excellent in fact) but salad and papadum not so much; chutneys were brought out in plastic to-go containers which didn't really feel right and is not something I'd ever seen before, but it did make it easier to take those things home at the end of the night. Service was a bit lacking as well. Often times sat waiting for a server to come by and looking in the back they were all on their phones and laughing. 5 or 6 tables and 3 people serving. We were glad to have found Momo Masala! Somewhat disagree with previous reviews characterizing the location as a "hole-in-the-wall". The ambiance is pleasant with enough seating. The staff is courteous and responsive to guests and prompt with service. Food was excellent, matching our high expectations, with spice level tailored to our taste. Do not leave the place until you have tried their Chicken Momos (we liked the fried serving). The Chicken Manchurian, Nepalese noodles, and Chili Paneer were a great combination.
