Visited this instagram-hyped brewery + restaurant that won best food at a brewery this year! Self-proclaimed "not authentic" but still Indian inspired food. Brighton is a bit of a hike from Boston. Tiny lot and tons of streetside parking (prepare to walk 2-3min). no resy capacity which is a little inconvenient. we waited 10min on a Thurs night-- it was packed! Set-up/Ambience: casual, greeted by lovely host and manager Eric. But get up to the bar to order and leave your tab open/close. Will be waiting for a non-high top next time, given it got cramped with all our plates. Food: as someone who LOVES spices, I felt that the depth could have been amped 10% up, but for a clientele of less adventurous palates, this hits the spot! - PATRA NI MACHI FRIED FISH ($27): what's not to love about fried haddock with herbs/spices and oh-so-delicious chaater tots - BETTER BUTTER CHICKEN ($23): served with rice, it was my favorite dish of the night. Again, not trying to be "authentic", but just perfectly cooked chicken! don't expect to be hit over the head with spice. probably 2/5 on a spiciness scale. Ordered garlic naan (3 pieces- they took our feedback!!!) on the side which was great - CAMPFIRE CORN SALAD ($15): had to balance the meal with veggies, slight bitter herbaciousness, can't say I was sophisticated enough to understand the chips, but it made it easy to eat the corn salad - Thursday special: I wish I wrote the name down, but it was probably my favorite bite of the night! - NEW ENGLAND GULAB JAMUN ($8): loved the cardamom maple syrup and the dumpling texture; perfect for someone who finds traditional gulab jamun too sweet; one ball per person was great, as it was on the heavier side - PLANTAIN EMPANADAS ($8): plantains, chai sugar, vanilla ice cream, caramel; heavier and more savory of a dessert than expected; served as 3, smaller portions coulda offered more of the textural balance - AATMA'S MANGO LASSI ($9): delicious but slightly pricy Overall, the ambience was casual and charming, and I very much respect the attention to detail with manager and staff checking in without being nosy. Upon arriving, I could smell the food from outside the door. We had to wait on a Friday night, but I loved being able to order a beer at the bar and hang outside on the patio. We didn't have to wait long for a seat. Servers don't come to take your order, you have to go up to the bar to order and you know, I kinda liked it. The dishes came out as they were ready and every staff member was incredibly friendly and hospitable. Most importantly the food was delicious. Is it a bar or Indian restaurant? Unfortunately, it felt like it tried too hard to be both and ended up failing at being either. I was very excited to try the innovative menu and was disappointed in the experience. We ordered the chicken 69 sandwich, butter chicken, garlic naan, gulab jamun, and mango lassi. The mango lassi tasted fine though not sure I would order again. The butter chicken was a bit lighter than typical butter chicken feeling a little less heavy cream based. Overall this tasted good and was my favorite dish. However, the garlic naan was drenched in ghee and entirely too soggy. While I was the most excited for the chicken 69 sandwich, this was the most disappointing of my order. There was an imbalance between chicken and flavor, which at times left you feeling like you were just eating the flavored coating. I also found the overall flavor too lime heavy which left my mouth feeling puckered. While the chaater tots helped, it wasn't enough to balance out the flavors, and was just tatter tots with some seasoning. The New Englan gulab jamun had me super intrigued with the use of maple syrup, however, this too disappointed as it just felt like a mild less flavorful dessert. I do think if someone finds gulab jamun typically too sweet this might be a nice alternative, but for me it just didnt work. The vibe is also a bit awkward as given the nature of the food, you are pretty much required to sit at a table which on a busy day can be a 30+min wait. I did see a couple try to eat butter chicken with the dish on their lap and it just didnt work. Aside from some tables, most are pretty small so its hard to balance the Indian dishes in such a minor space, especially at a high top. Had the menu been more Indian street food it would have felt much more like a bar experience. There is an open space around the bar to grab a drink, but you constantly feel like you're always in someone's way - especially as you need to order at the bar for food and the perimeter of the bar is all tables for diners. The service was also super lacking. While the bartenders were friendly and the manager did come by to chat with everyone, the servers were really hard to track down. My server dropped the food off and bolted requiring me to go back up front to ask for silverware and plates. The table behind me had a similar issue mixed in with a dish they didnt order being dropped off and the server leaving before they could say anything. Overall I see what they are trying to do, but it feels like it needs a lot of work still. read more

It's an order/pay at the counter situation, but there are still servers bringing you your food so it feels like a proper restaurant and doesn't feel too casual. Got the butter chicken, garlic naan, chicken burger, and tots. Butter chicken is big and really filling. Not very spiced and more on the tomatoey side. Chicken burger is quite small. Unfortunately the naan is just one single piece of naan not a stack like at other places so that was a lil disappointing. Really liked the dragon beer. Everything tasted great, just don't come in expecting authenticity. I felt it was a little expensive given the casualness of the spot. I had an amazing time at aatma. There was plenty of street parking during the weekend. We had to wait about 15-20 mins on a Saturday night. They had a nice little outdoor area to wait for indoor seating. When I first looked at the menu, I wanted to try everything it looked delicious. The spring bhaji was crispy and flavorful pairing nicely with the mint sauce. The benne dosa was savory and filling. The fried idli was tangy and a nice twist to chaat. The chicken 69 sandwich was my favorite. It was saucy and spicy. We did get all of the dessert and it was amazing. The gulab jamun was classic. The masala churro was unique and I loved that it was paired with rabri. The manager had told us that the chocolate from the brownie was from kerla which felt very special. The manager and waiter frequently checked in making sure we had a great stay. I had a great time and would love to bring other friends and family. read more

Overall: we've heard about this place for a while and it was worth it for a price. The food runs on the higher need (more than $20) but the food is upscale accordingly if you take it as Indian fusion rather than typical Indian cuisine. Food: for Indian food it is slightly on the pricier end but it does come with good flavors that are worth returning. We heard a lot about their dosas and rightfully so. The presentation was immaculate as the dosa was a uniform crispness (no breaks!). The flavor inside was on the saltier side but the tomato sauce on the side more than supplements that. The mushroom saag was an interesting fusion as the mushroom part felt like a falafel almost! Well fried and creamy flavors were a nice harmony. Ambience/Decor/Service: low lighting and some table seats but get there early as they fill up incredibly fast. The food was full of flavor! An unexpected find in this part of town. Like the menu says, the food is "Indian-ish" - fun and inspired. The burger was hands down my favorite dish but the paneer and dosa were also excellent. It's a very casual vibe inside with mostly high top tables. We so happened to go on trivia night which was packed and sort of loud, so there was no table service but that could also be the norm. If you've had any microwaveable Indian dish from Trader Joe's, be ready for the same exact quality. Oh and for far too much money. The beer is good but this isn't a review of Widowmaker. This is not authentic Indian food. The place is not family friendly at all so avoid taking your kids. I went there with my family and we waited for over an hour for a sit down table. We were then told by a very rude male worker that they cannot guarantee seating. He was snappy and unapologetic. We were with our special needs toddler and at this point we had been waiting over an hour to be seated. I literally had to scour the room myself to secure a table because the male worker would not assist us with finding a table. The food was very mediocre. We were quite dissatisfied, as it was served cold. Most of the dishes were bland and did not taste fresh. The only thing we really enjoyed was the naan. Aatma is a new Indian restaurant. I found out about it on social media because I saw the chef's interesting video content first. Chef Sarasin has traveled to India (Gujarat, Mumbai iirc) and so I was very curious when I realized he had opened a restaurant right here in Boston! Overall, the food is very high quality -- much better than the typical Indian place in town. You can tell the difference if you get the butter chicken -- it's delicious, creamier, and not just "spicy." The mushroom saag is interesting in its fusion and novelty, but I would not recommend it. (It's still quite good, but given the chef's background the bar is very high.) The Chicken69 sandwich is good -- again not extraordinary. The naans are great. Overall, I think this place has a lot of potential. I would recommend shying away from "fusion/novelty" and trying to recreate the classics better. There is really no GREAT indian food place here in Boston (if fact, even if you consider the greater Boston area), so doing the basics well would already be a BFD. I am not disrecommending this place by any means -- please try it out and encourage Chef S. But I do think the place has room for growth. I think in a year, this will probably be one of the rising stars for Indian cuisine. read more

Torn on where to land with this review - we had a great time here but definitely some room for improvement. The biggest thing that was difficult was the space. We had a bigger group on a weeknight, and felt like we had to be pretty aggressive to stake our claim to a hightop (not even a table) after waiting for a bit. Ordering was pretty doable - you have to wait in line since you order at the bar, but it went pretty quick. The food comes out as its ready - generally this was smaller bites before larger ones. The food we had was pretty good - our group particularly enjoyed bhajjis and the paneer. This was kind of a shame because we specifically ordered 2 paneers since our group had lots of vegetarians, and one of them never came. We asked several times and were told it would come out when it was ready, but then we saw other folks get paneer after we ordered, so i think they just forgot. The Indira's dal was okay, felt like it could have benefited from more spice. The tots were really good. We are glad we tried Aatma, but might wait to see if their space/flow settles in a bit before going back. read more

I swear they could sell that sauce by the jar because I always use my extra to dip carrots and cucumbers at home and I'm sure it would make great dipping/seasoning for almost everything! The tots themselves are also seasoned well. My boyfriend said it's his favorite Butter Chicken and Gulab Jamun but would love a Korma with Chicken option someday. They did forget rice for 3 entrees and I didn't realize until I got home but they were extremely generous in making it right. I've never dined in yet but from picking up multiple times it seems like a balance between hip and child-friendly. The food was mediocre- they need to improve their main course. Idli and dosa were pretty good. Tots and gulab jamun were good too. Butter chicken was a fail for me - the curry was nothing like traditional butter chicken curry which is little tangy and rich. Their's was flat and very fenugreeky. Mushroom saag wasn't it either. Naan looked like store bought and reheated version. Chai was destroyed by too much sugar and again with the use of some vegan milk. Spice mix used was ok. Ambiance - not for everyone, it might be attractive for single folks looking to hangout or for a date or confused desis who like to eat Indian food with a background of rock music. We dintlike that background to dine in! Servers were nice, polite and not chatty though we prefers to talk especially at a place claiming to be a fusion one trying to claim eastern dishes with their western touch. Widowmaker has been one of our fave local places to go. The vibe is incredible, always rad scifi/fantasy movies on the TV. Once Aatma joined them though it became THE favorite. My stomach was acting up last night that it made me think clearly about this place. I had the burger and it was overly spiced with Marsala. The chicken sandwich was better and the tater tots were good. In general the food there was alright nothing special. There was a two hour wait because they didn't take reservations but that's not their fault. However the music was loud and obnoxious, they made us become our own waiters by getting up and ordering at the counter (why don't you allow me to order through my phone), we had to get up from our table any time we wanted waters (trust me your gonna need water), some of our orders were missed (probably cause of the loud music), and the prices weren't cheap. Like why the f did we tip?! I felt like we got scammed at the end. The people there were nice though. It sucks writing a bad review for a new spot but upset stomach, bad service and overpriced compelled me to write. read more

Even though it was super busy, food came out quickly after we ordered (though the line to order took forever). Both sandwiches were delicious! The Indian spices were subtle but added a nice touch that made the food stand out from a regular chicken sandwich or burger.
