Very solid spot! I ordered D'Guru from UberEats and picked up my food in person. There weren't many people dining in person, so it might be more of a takeout spot. I was very impressed with the portion size... and I can certainly eat a lot. The meal was also pretty filling, especially because it came with both naan and rice. In terms of the main dishes, I was a big fan of the Aloo Baingan (eggplant and potatoes) and also enjoyed the Hare Moong Ki Dal (lentils). I'd be happy to come back again! read more

Such a good place for lunch! I got the butter chicken with saag that came with two plain naans. I also ordered one vegetable pakora which was AMAZING. For $1.50? It was so worth it. My whole lunch only costed about $15 lol if you ever had Indian food, it can get pretty pricey. But for their lunch menu here, it's so affordable. I'm kind of torn here, because I really like Indian food and really dislike lunch restaurants in downtown. So you'd think this would be a delicious ghee-covered lifesaver in the middle of a ocean of bland rice bowls. And it is...sometimes. The food is extremely hit or miss. Sometimes it's really flavorful, spicy and everything I want from a heaping spoonful of Indian. But sometimes it tastes like someone added water, too much oil or just disappointment. Their eggplant is everything eggplant shouldn't be. Their lamb is good, but is usually a single mouthful of meat swimming in a lake of butter. I do like that they give you a big hunk of naan with the combos and that, if you choose right, you get a solid amount of food. But that just makes it more frustrating, because when it's good I don't want to eat anywhere else and when it's bad I question my life choices. Not bad for indian food smack dab in the middle of dtx/south station. I did not get the combo the first time I went, i just opted for the chicken tikka masala with white rice and it was pretty good. I do wish the curry was more thick but it seems to be a trend to be thin. My meal was 7.50 and with a mango lassi included it was $10.50. The mango lassi/ other drinks are in the fridge to the left. The line goes very quick. Some seating if you get here early... the spice level was higher than mild so that got me sweatin'~ They take card which I like. The chicken was sort of dry ..but then some piece weren't..I would definitely return when I crave indian. tl;dr - love this place so much that I make a trip into downtown at least twice a month just to get it. I can only vouch for the lamb/goat curry combo with Palak Paneer option because that is all I get. One of my favorite Indian joints in Boston. I've never changed my order since I first tried the place so I can't speak to other dishes, but the Lamb/Goat Curry combo with Palak Paneer is absolutely delicious! The lamb/goat is very very tender. I actually live fairly far from the location but make an effort to make the trip at least once every couple of weeks. The food is tasty and generous in portions. The flavors really remind me of home cooked meals I've experienced visiting Indian family friends. The food may be a little salty and oily at times, so it won't be the most palatable to those sensitive to these types of dishes. My wife got the lentils once and she said "it felt heavy" while I was pretty happy with it. The veggie samosas and pakoras are flavorful but are quite oily as well. I've passed this place a bunch of times in their old downtown location and I was always curious. I finally had the opportunity to come in today (to their new place at 92 Bedford street) and I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a meat combo plate with lamb curry, mater paneer, naan bread, rice and a vegetable samosa and all were excellent! The samosa in particular I liked, it didn't taste frozen or old like they sometimes do. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The mater paneer was a little soupy but was still good and made a nice gravy for the rice. There aren't many options for Indian food in downtown so it's very nice to have this place to go to. Big sizes, too salty. I've had lunch here twice now. Had the veg combo both times. The serving sizes are hefty here, and the food is authentic. The combo can be hard to finish honestly and it's reasonably priced at $10.50 (rice, two vegetarians sides, warm naan). However, both times I visited for lunch I found the food to be not too spicy like some other reviews but rather waay too salty and buttery. I will say it's delicious food but almost to the point of overkill. The salt factor had me down two bottles of water before finishing half. The naan tastes like butter and is almost sopping in it. Surprised I haven't dropped by here earlier! One of the few Indian places in the area. They are cafeteria style, so they have rotating options daily. Usually have at least two chicken options, a variety of veg options and at least one lamb/fish curry. The combo meals are a pretty good deal - you get a full lunch with 2 curries, naan, rice, and a chutney. Naan is pretty lackluster - somewhat floppy, but soft, and not really flavorful at all. Curries are flavorful but are medium spicy - since it is caf style there is not really an option to make it less spicy. Portions are very large for the price. A great spot for quick Indian food. Once it's your turn in line, you choose the size of your take out plate, someone scoops the delicious items of what you want, your condiment (tamarind, mint chutney or onion pickle) and you pay. It takes 1 minute! What they have out rotates daily and there are definitely days better than others. My favorites are ones where there's palak paneer (spinach with paneer cheese cubes) and the daal makhani (delicious and hearty spicy lentils). I think Thursday? I really love their rice, it's so fragrant and aromatic. But I'm not a fan of their naan. It's edible, but it's rather dense and a bit oily. Still, this is a great spot. I enjoy this restaurant because they give you a lot for your dollar. During my lunch breaks the line is always out the door. The amount of flavor is delicious. You can tell they cook from the heart. I always get the tikka massala plate combo. The have great customer service as well and they are used to the rush. I'm always immediately in and out. Would I suggest this place, absolutely yes. Please note I am a white girl from Connecticut who first had Indian food in college. I by no means know anything about what makes Indian food authentic, all I can comment on is the happiness of my tastebuds. They were happy. I've worked in fidi for about 6 years now and today was the first time I made it to D'Guru.. not because I haven't been dying to try it for ages, mostly because I try to keep my lunches limited to foods with neutral scents so as not to offend my coworkers. Today I said "screw it, I want Indian" and I am so glad I did. I ended up getting the chicken tikka and the dal. Both were perfectly cooked and super flavorful. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of heat the food had. It was by no means an assault on the tastebuds but it left a pleasant tingle on the lips for this girl who loves spicy food. People who are super sensitive to spice should definitely inquire about the more mild dishes. The rice was cooked well and also well seasoned - but word of warning, they use whole spices in the rice so if you eat aimlessly at your desk like I do, you might get a big bite of a whole cardamom pod or whole clove without expecting it! I've seen a few reviews that were disappointed with the naan. I actually thought it was quite good. You can't expect a takeout place to have the same quality naan as a normal restaurant. The wrapping makes it deflate a little and get ever so slightly soggy, but it is in no way inedible. It also looked like they had roti and papadum if you aren't a fan of naan. Trying new restaurants and new cuisines is always a learning experience. Things I have learned from D'Guru: 1. They have a rotating menu. If it's there this week, it may not be there next week, so if you like it then cherish the memory of it in your heart forever. 2. Since things are in a different language, point at what you want rather than guessing the name. If you try to guess, you will probably be very very wrong. * Fried okra is nothing like fried pickles. * Fried okra is gross. 3. I love you D'Guru. No, really I do. You've improved the selection of food in DTX immensely with your huge portions and affordable prices. Your rotating menu means that I won't get bored even when I obsessively eat here every day for a week and a half. Your employees always great me with a smile, never chastise me when I attempt to say things like aloo baingain and it comes out sounding remarkably like "I'm an idiot" and the cashier always remembers that I don't want a bag to throw away in the office. My experiences with Indian food are limited to other people ordering for me and buffets so I am certainly no expert but everything I've had here has been delicious. On a side note I've straight up seen people from Mumbai Chopstix buying their naan at Trader Joe's and I myself have purchased naan there and it doesn't look like this. Maybe it is frozen but it's never been bad. If you want a seafood curry I'd recommend going early in the day as the quantity of seafood diminishes later in the afternoon otherwise stick with the veg options for around $7 (!) and enjoy an embarrassment of riches as you choose from the lion's share of the dishes offered that day. FOOD POISONING alert!! Salmonella Warning - DO NOT EAT HERE!! On Thursday 1/20/2011 around 1:30pm, I did a take-out of chicken vindaloo, and aloo mater, and did not eat any dinner that night as I was very full from the high calories. In the middle of the night, I had a violent food poisoning episode, and had to be hospitalized (due to dehydration and needing ivy). The doctor and I agreed that it was most likely due to the chicken I had ingested from D'Guru. Even though I used to enjoy their food, I will NEVER go back again. D'Guru does not place sanitation as a priority in their practice, and they may be under-cooking their meat products. This is a very health hazardous practice. I've discouraged my other co-workers who have had lunch there, and they are convinced never to return. Flavor-wise, it was good with the right heat, but the curry was not smooth - kind of oily. The naan was shameful. Shameful. Okay, real time review: I went to D'Guru this afternoon not only craving Indian food, but at the suggestion of a co-worker and partially because of the reviews here. What I should have implored was my more sound judgment when it comes to obtaining accurate information. Usually, I trust the opinions of a few Yelpers that have rarely led me astray, having become trusted because I share very similar opinions on almost every spot we've dined in common, yet never together. Clearly, this time, having forgone that step, I am sad to admit that I am more disappointed in myself than with the lack luster food. The shrimp curry was flavorless and borderline inedible. I'm not even sure if that was shrimp come to think of it. I mean, it looked like shrimp but it just fell off the tail and tasted something like cat food; yes, I've eaten cat food! Typical to most Indian restaurants in the United States, Guru has catered to the masses of babies who can not handle a little spicy food. The sauce is bland! Also, this is not even naan. I'm not sure what sort of bread this is, but I can tell you that it's straight up crap! It's most likely frozen, bulk factory made garbage that passes as naan to people who don't know what real Indian food is supposed to taste like. For the value, I suppose $10 is the going rate for lunch downtown (good or not), but I was really hoping for a taste of home. I LOVE the Somerville location, so I was really excited to go here - but it's really different, and not in a good way. The naan is chewy but bland (made from white flour) - from reading other reviews, I know now you can request the delicious whole-wheat roti that is the default in Somerville. The food is way oiler here, and I suspect they use more cream than the other location too. I'm guessing they are appealing to white American Financial District palates. Oh well. Also, I understand that everyone is in a rush at lunch, but I find it unbelievably appetizing to see them serve the (oily and weirdly watery) food so hastily that it drips into the other metal compartment things (what does one call these?). How is a vegetarian dish supposed to stay vegetarian if it's been showered with a little bit of chicken tikka masala multiple times? The service is very nice though. Guru has come to downtown Boston, and brought with it delicious Indian food, fast and casual, at a good price. It fills the aching void between the frankly awful food-court representation at Downtown Crossing, and the two white-tablecloth options nearby, and I expect it will be a hit here. D'Guru offers a limited menu that changes daily: typically one or two chicken dishes, one or two goat or lamb dishes, one seafood dish, and four to six vegetarian dishes. A lot of Indian vegetarian food includes dairy, but some of Guru's dishes are vegan and marked as such (four out of five on today's menu). Combos include two main dishes, rice and naan and are easily big enough for two meals. They also sell a la carte entrees and sides. The food is generously spiced -- not so much hot as rich in cardamom and clove and such -- so if you prefer your Indian food on the bland side, this might not be to your taste. I like it just fine, and find it to be much less heavy than the typical Boston-area Indian food (as long as you don't lose your mind and try and eat the entire combo). One intangible that I'll add about this place: they seem to really love what they're doing and really care what people think about their food. They smile and react with pleasure when people make yummy noises. This seems like an obvious thing for restaurant staff to do, but I guess it isn't as common as you'd think, because it really stands out when it happens. This place was surprising and impressive. I'm pretty picky about Indian food I've found in the States and yet D'Guru does it right. The food is fresh, fast, and delicious. Plus, the offerings aren't always what you'd typically expect at an Indian takeout place in Boston or most U.S. cities (meaning--they go well beyond the Palak Paneer, Aloo Gobi, and tandoori chicken, and offered really good lentils (dal) and okra last time I went in). They were also really generous with the naan, which is always a plus. I love the combo-style setup as well (the closest thing you can get to a lunch thali in the neighborhood) and the prices are great, especially given how fresh everything is. And extra bonus--they label everything clearly as vegan, vegetarian, or meat, so for vegans, there is no wondering whether a certain dish uses real ghee or has cream in it. Given the shocking lack of choice, I will continue to frequent this little establishment. First some good points: it's clean. The line moves fast. There's a limited number of rotating choices so people don't have choice paralysis. And the sauces/flavor profiles are delicious with just the right around of heat to satisfy everyone. Now the not so great: the naan is terrible. I think it's Trader Joe's, which means a really thick doughy pita. The stuff in the sauces are a little inconsistent, i.e. chicken may be a little on the dry side and lentils a little undercooked. They are not egregious errors, but more attention to execution would benefit everyone, no? To end on a good note, if you eat everything, you will definitely not be hungry. Oh man I love this place... i love indian food so perhaps im biased but this is the closest place for me to get indian near my job and i love it! Their menu rotates so be sure to check on their website if theyre serving your fave that day, although if you go with something else you may be surprised! (I had some chicken curry the other day because they were not serving my precious lamb curry that day and i think im a convert!) If you get a serving of curry + rice + samosa + naan itll be about $9 or so. Not too bad really, if you split the meal in half you got a solid lunch and a bombin' dinner (delicious, spicy dinner!).
