Okay, so I'm a little torn. This is gonna sound conceited, because it is, but Jersey Indian food just crushes the competition. And by competition I mean the rest of the country. Give it to Jersey, it's basically all we have. So when I come at an Indian place here it's like a rebound after a bad breakup - I'm expecting to be disappointed. And Boston (Seaport, specifically) is well-supplied in disappointment. But Madras is...good. Not great. It's wickedly expensive, $20 for a dosa with a base set of ingredients, but that's kind of normal price levels for the area. But the quality is decent and when they say spicy they don't mean Taco Bell Fire sauce. Madras' spicy hurts good. Dosas come with a set of sauces, which each have something to say - it's a whole culinary conversation. Besides the price, I think the dosas are a little dense - when I've had them before (yes, in Jersey), they tend to be crispier, more crackly and able to handle their fillings better. So - not the best, but I'd definitely go back. read more

I speak as a person with more of an Indian palate... don't do it unless you want to be disappointed. The dosa was incredibly disappointing. The dosa itself was a strange texture - it reminded us more of paper than a dosa which should be crispy yet fluffy at the same time. I'm not sure what this place uses for batter. The sambar was ok, but the chutneys were waaaaay too sweet (could have been a dessert itself lol). The potatoes in the dosa masala also didn't taste seasoned. The samosa chaat was very one note. A chaat should be a balance of textures, flavors, and temperatures yet this was one pile of weird mush. The samosa itself was soooo soggy it added nothing to the dish. The sev wasn't crispy enough either, and the chutneys again too sweet. The place serves chai (through a machine, not brewed by a person). It's got a small seating area to eat inside. Madras Dosa has delicious food and kind and helpful staff. The mango lassi was bomb.com. The problem? The dosa is really unreasonably expensive. You add $2 or $3 for every filling. That's nuts. I first discovered this place a few years back when I lived in Seaport, and it's still great! It's basically hidden in plain sight, right across from CVS. There are so many options for fillings (I'm currently eating a dosa with spicy potato, mango, and cashew nuts). The sauces and dips are all so flavorful! The mango lassi is nice and sweet, and I appreciate that they have wooden compostable plates! Very eco-friendly. What a great little neighborhood gem :-) It's also really affordable for the area, but without the endless crowds of the more commercial spots. read more

My friend showed me the place and wow the dosa is so delicious!!! They were really packed when I came which makes sense because the food is great. Inside is a little too small with space but overall a great place to grab a bite with some friends. I liked all the different sauces you get with the dosa as well. Service was good. Consistently tasty and more importantly very authentic south Indian food! I have a high bar for idlis and these are some of the best. Soft fluffy and quite a good size too. The coconut chutney was also very fresh and yummy! The only gripe I have is with the spiciness of the sambar. While the sambar itself was very tasty it was just too spicy. I really wish they had options to select mild, medium or spicy when ordering. My suggestion to the restaurant - either make the sambar less spicy or offer the option to have it on the mild side - please :). Ordered through GrubHub and it took a while but the driver apologized profusely for the delay. Some of the food was lukewarm or cold as a result but still tasty. Went to this place for lunch and order 2 dosas and one aloo tikki chat. And found a hair in the sambar (that came with one of the dosas) as soon as I opened it. Showed it to the cashier and she seemed apologetic and offered a replacement. That's when I noticed that the guy at the dosa making station and a guy in the back weren't wearing any protective hair cap. I took the replacement sambar thinking this was a one off mistake. But around half way through the chat I noticed another hair. I showed this to staff as well. And again noticed the guys weren't wearing any protective hair cap. The most disappointing thing is that the staff were super casual about this. Two hair in one order is a very bad look for this restaurant. Needless to say I'm never going back here. read more

Food here was delightful! My first time trying dosa and paani puri was so exciting, glad I came with a friend who taught me how to eat paani puri otherwise I would have eaten it all wrong. Paani puri has a crispy outer shell and it's filled with potato, onions, and crispies (not exactly sure what they're made of). You pour some of the liquid into the shells, and place the whole ball into your mouth. The whole bite with the mint water was so refreshing and an explosion of flavors! I came back a couple days later to enjoy paani puri again :) highly recommend! read more

It's really good! Fast food setup and most stuff is less than $15. It was pretty crowded. It's SOUTH Indian. Don't go expecting saag or chicken tikka masala. It's dosa and chaat. We were quite hungry late on a weekday night when we discovered that we're a mile away from Madras Dosa. Not being from Boston, we had to do a double take on the timings since it was 11 pm on a Monday night and the restaurant was supposedly opened until 2 am (umm what?) -- this isn't something that we are used to. While we found a street parking spot outside the restaurant, it was surprising to find a line to order when we entered. We were warned there's going to be a 20 min wait for Dosas and 45 mins for a sandwich . There's limited seating inside but there are some tables outside the spot as well. We ordered the Pav Bhaji Dosa, Samosa Dosa and Spicy Podi Idli. The packaging and the chutney / sambhar dispenser in the to-go box was novel and well thought out. The Pav Bhaji dosa was amazing along with the fibrous chutney. The Podi Idli lived up to its name as well. The only miss in our book was the Samosa Dosa -- would have tasted better if the samosa was smashed more. We also liked our dosas crispy but these definitely weren't. All in all, we are grateful for finding this place and wouldn't hesitate to return again when we are in town looking for a quick snack. read more

I learned about this place through word of mouth. Upon walking in, with the music and the hustle and bustle, you can tell it's the hot spot to be! For those who don't know (I wish I'd heard this) you eat the dosa by pulling apart with your hands and dipping in the sauces/lentils. I ordered a dosa ($11) with spicy potatoes (masala dosa, $1) and onions ($1). Could've done without the onions, as it was basically a scoop of raw onion. I also got a side of sambar, which was $5 for about half a cup. Everything was absolutely delicious. Just a heads-up, the prices are not the same as the menu prices, so I've included them above. As for the chicken pulao ($15), my counterpart said it was delicious! Onion haters beware: it is served with a lot of raw onion on top, and he took care to embarrassingly remove it all, piece by piece. I was really excited to try out this little dosa shop in Seaport, and visited here on a Friday evening for dinner. Unfortunately this restaurant does not have many seats/tables inside, and because it was a very chilly day we were worried we wouldn't be able to dine-in. Luckily, a table opened up and we were able to enjoy our food indoors. I'd definitely caution larger groups coming her, as you likely won't find a spot. I ended up ordering a dosa with potato, cheese, and chicken. I also got a samosa as a side. The samosa was nice and fresh, with a tasty filling and tangy dipping sauce. The dosa was also very good - but I was a bit disappointed since I ordered it with chicken and it had none on it. All the fillings in the dosas are extra cost (around $2-3 each), so it was a bit upsetting not receiving one, especially protein. Stopped here for a quick bite while visiting Boston. It is in Seaport and within walking distance of the contemporary art museum and harbor. They have outdoor and indoor seating though inside was a bit humid and hot when I was there, I think there ac might not have been working. Ambiance: super cute and modern decor inside, almost made me skeptical initially about the quality of the food (usually my mantra for authentic ethnic food is the more run-down the place looks, the better). Really brightly lit with a cute pseudo plant wall on one side. They also served the food within 5 minutes of us ordering so the speed was great. Food: my paneer dosa came down to around $14 with tax and tip. There were 3 dipping sauces and the overall portion was pretty big. This was my first time here and the food was really good but I took away 1 star because they got my order wrong and I was too hungry to wait for a redo AND they were out of Mango Lassi. I would recommend their Samosa Chaat over my Dosa. The samosa chaat was delicious. Had a great experience here and will be back when we come back to Boston. We came here twice during our stay and the consistency was great and we had no issues. The dosas were perfectly cooked and everything is customizable. We did ours with the spicy potato, cheese and green chili's for a kick. The chili definitely brought the heat so if you don't like super spicy maybe skip out on that. Also, the packaging for the dosa is on point- it would be great to-go because nothing would get soggy or spill. We also got dahi puri- which was surprisingly tasty. The kitchen was clean and everything was made fresh. It's a smaller footprint inside so less seating room . The masala chai was also surprisingly yummy- we grabbed some and walked the harbor. Something that would help this place is having someone walk you through the menu and explain what their most popular dosas and menu items are etc. Especially for people who are new to this cuisine and wanting to try it out. read more

Dosa is not normally a food I'd associate with fast food so I was excited by this concept at Madras Dosa. Despite the crowd, our food came out quickly and I loved all the different and creative options for fillings, sides and entrees. I ordered a masala dosa with onions added on for extra, so it was a fairly basic choice. The masala dosa came with a spicy mashed potato. It came with three dips. The spicy potato was flavorful, the dosa was crispy and well made, and the sambar had a great flavor. I was impressed! I can't wait to come back and try some different filling combinations. I also ordered a pani puri. I loved this as well. The pani was classic. The filling was unique! I've never had a pani puri with pomegranate before. It was different but tasted delicious. I got a bag of magic masala Lays which I haven't had in a minute; I thought it was a nice touch for them to offer that. My husband and I ordered these to share. It was a good amount of food for lunch for the two of us. Our bill came out to $30.50 total, which I thought was very reasonable for Boston food prices. I had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. It's a very hopping spot with limited seating. The interior is a cute aesthetic with the green leafy wall and neon "Dosa is the answer" sign. I think it's a great spot for a quick bite while in Seaport. Bonus points for having so many great vegan and vegetarian options! I highly recommend checking out Madras Dosa. We ordered ghee dosa and filter coffee. Ghee dosa is not that crispy. It's too thick. Service was fast. Music is little loud, little hard hear when your name is being called or even to talk in the table. Filter coffee - it's actually not filter coffee, it's from machine. Seating area could use much better upkeep--clearly this place is designed more for takeout and delivery. If you plan to dine in, go during off-hours. I did more research and it's not surprising that the same owners behind Vaanga are responsible for this place. Hygiene and cleanliness are never a priority for these owners at all. i don't usually do one star reviews but this place is WAY too expensive for the quality. as someone who grew up eating indian food, this is very mid, the pani puri barely had any potatoes in it and i had to ask for extra pani bc they give you a tiny little container. they charge you $2 for EACH toppings and we got nutella dosa with fruits and it's literally canned fruit puree, no fresh fruit on sight. i was really excited to find a late night indian snack spot in seaport but it was very disappointing. read more

FIRST and definitely not my last time trying dosa. SO yummy, not too heavy, got the potato + onion filling, dosa itself was also delicious and all of the sauces were 11/10. I loved the chili sauce, coconut sauce and also the lentil one -- even eating them plain was good lol bc the sauces were so damn flavorful. The store is quite small though so we sat outside on a nice day. I wish the store was a bit cleaner though, the tables outside were a quite dirty.
