We were super hungry so at that point we were annoyed that no one came to check in on us. When we got the server's attention, we had asked him about our order. He told us if we needed a menu and we were like we just ordered from you. He FORGOT OUR ORDER!! He didn't even apologize and just said our order is on the way soon... which was even more frustrating because he didn't admit he made a mistake. The food was pretty good, but I didn't find anything too life changing. Just a good lunch spot overall. The interior was brightly lit and modern, but a little boring if you ask me. I think I was more impressed with the location in a cute outdoor mall called 2nd and PCH and the interior design which was very open and nicely done. Our table was super dirty when we were seated (had to wipe down our seats before sitting), service was pretty friendly but slow just so-so. We had the Short rib dan mein which had good flavor but was on the salty side and the dungeness crab fried rice which also had great flavor but was overdone with the salty seasoning. We also had the pork and shrimp handmade dumplings which were dry and bland. Shoulda got the soup dumplings instead which are probably better. Overall I like the general atmosphere and food had good flavor. But they're more of a 3.5 based on food requiring buckets of water to be drank or suffer from too much salt intake. I had been meaning to try Dan Modern Chinese since I noticed it coming soon, and finally made it over for lunch. Free parking in the 2nd and PCH parking garages for the first 90 minutes. The interior is gorgeous and bright though not that big. We had a very friendly and attentive waitress throughout the meal. The menu is a decent size, and during lunch hours they also offer several half size portions, which allowed me to try a lot of different dishes. Prices were not cheap, but not too unreasonable either. We ended up ordering xiao long bao, salt and pepper tofu, short rib fried noodles, spicy oxtail beef noodle soup, sauteed string beans, and sauteed snow pea leaf. Shredded ginger, black vinegar, and soy sauce were on the table for the xiao long bao. While I usually prefer pork xiao long bao, I actually preferred the chicken and shrimp xiao long bao over the pork and crab xiao long bao at Dan. The dumplings were decent, nothing mind blowing like Din Tai Fung (the obvious comparison), but not bad. While the sauteed veggies were nice and garlicky, I was expecting the string beans to be more wrinkled, achieved only via super hot oil in a wok, which is how they are prepared in more authentic Chinese restaurants. Nonetheless, both veggies were tasty. The fried tofu was good, although I prefer a different more crispy batter. I loved the chewiness of the thick noodles in the fried noodles, though the sauce was a bit too sweet for me. The oxtail beef noodle soup was piping hot and a perfect small size for tasting. Din Tai Fung (dtf) who? This place contends with DTF. I don't even know where to start, except I'm SO Confused, in a good way! I feel like a dtf traitor to even say that it contends in the dumpling game, but.... but... IT DOES. And it's a must try, as much as i dont want this place to ever get super super busy, like DTF. But it must be shared. Ambiance, a bit lively, and openly spaced tables. You can watch the cooks in the back from the outside of the restaurant, so there's traffic control there. The best part, no wait and FAST service. Like unbelievably fast. Like, sit down, order, within 5-7 minutes fast, including steamed dumplings. They also don't ration their dumplings and pacing of dumpling orders like DTF does. Which is one of my downside for DTF for me. Been here twice and finally wanted to review it, because trust me, I didn't want to as I wanted to keep this place a secret, but I guess I'll do it. Because good food should be shared with everyone. Both trips were fabulous and service was consistently good and fast. Plus, bathrooms were clean, which is always a big deal for me. Service - 5 stars for both trips. Different servers and bussers, and perfect table touch timings. Food - 5 stars, FABULOUS for both trips. Consistency in flavor in the noodles and dumplings is perfection. I found the soup dumplings to be bigger than DTF, maybe twice the size. the dumpling wrap was fabulous, thin and not doughy, kinda chewy, but one bite-able. The wrap is soooo very similar to DTF I swear someone probably stole the recipe and made it more pliable. The noodles for their mien dishes and soup noodles dishes are all handmade and SUPER Chewy. The thick noodles remind me of udon almost. Their soup noodles have thin noodles and still super Chewy for such thinly sliced noodles. I applaud this place for the handmade dumpling and noodle execution. The short rib dan mien is very much on the sweeter side of flavor, when I prefer savory, but still good. Nice balance of veggies compared to noodles vs DTF, which could improve in this area. I truly wish Dan has Shanghai rice cakes like DTF, but I didn't find their pork fried rice as tasty as DTF's, but Dan's fried rice in general, is really good, traditional fried rice, where the rice is individually separated, as fried rice should be. i actually prefer Dan's fried rice to be better than DTF - not overly salty, but still tasty and well balanced. But I guess it comes down to your preferences. String beans and pea sprouts leaves with garlic was good. String bean isn't as good as DTF, but still garlicky goodness is just as acceptable. It's got more texture and slightly crunchy. I do wish Dan had dessert and a full bar. I do enjoy DTF's dessert of sesame dumplings, as it almost reminds me of tang yuan wrapped in DTF dumpling skin. Overall, if you don't want to wait hours and arent specifically craving or needing to go to DTF, this place is highly acceptable substitute, and may I dare say, just as competive to DTF when it comes to dumplings, with fast service and no wait time? Excellent service and nice ambiance. I honestly wrote this place off because I thought it would be overpriced and catered to western tastebuds, but actually, this restaurant was surprisingly good! I do think everything is seasoned a little more heavily than regular Chinese food but I find this to be true at many Chinese restaurants that cater to a more western palette. With that said, the food was all delicious. We had pork XLB, the stir fried noodles, cold cucumbers, beef roll and scallion pancakes. The noodle and beef roll were the best, the XLB and scallion pancakes next and while the cucumbers were well seasoned, it's not my personal favorite preparation of these (more of a sour mala flavor). As a family of 4 we were able to finish all of the food and walk out with no leftovers. The price is akin to Din Tai Fung, maybe a touch less expensive. I'm so glad this spot opened up at 2nd & PCH! I will compare it to Din Tai Fung, since that is my standard for soup dumplings. In terms of the wait, this place is amazing. I've been there 3 times for dinner so far, and there has never been a wait for a table. I think it's not very well known yet since it opened up fairly recently. Service is comparable to DTF - maybe not *quite* up to par, but close. As for the menu, Dan definitely has more variety in terms of the soup dumplings - if I remember correctly there were 5 or 6 options of xiao long bao. There's also more hot entrees like tofu and shrimp dishes (none of which I tried). A couple things that DTF has that this place noticeably lacks - the dumplings in spicy sauce and the chocolate dumplings - two of my favorite dishes. In terms of the food we had, everything was very very good. I especially liked the pickled cucumbers and spicy pork XLB. The beef roll is delicious (but heavy) and the short rib Dan mein was my favorite dish all around! I will definitely be returning again and again! read more

So I sat and waited until I guess he was our waiter came and again requested waters- we ordered XLB - they either come 3 or 5 in a steamer- we got the pork and chicken plus cucumbers, Dan noodles with short ribs, green beans and sesame noodles. The sesame noodles were awful- gummy stuck together noodles with green onions on top. Yuk. The Dan noodles were okay and the XLB was basic- the dough was thicker and not as light at other places . We also ordered sake (huh sake in a Chinese place?) . Overall this place is located in a hyped up mall and offers really basic food. Parking in the structure will cost you dearly so park for free on Marina drive. Interior is sparse and open with indoor or outdoor dining. Prices are high for the quality and quantity. Food arrived fairly fast and was brought to us in a bit of a chaotic manner by someone other than our server. We weren't asked if we wanted any chili oil, or sauces, and we weren't given the opportunity to do so. Yet, it was offered to the table next to us. I loved the pickled cucumbers that were crisp, delicious and paired perfectly with the Dan Noodles. The noodles on the othet hand, had very little meat and most pieces of the short rib were chewy. Pretty good flavorwise, but the lack of short rib in the dish and the big clump of noodles that were stuck together, made this a 3 star dish. The soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings were good but not memorable. Overall, I felt like I wasn't dining out. It was a high priced meal with fast food paced service. I probably went for over 10 years without eating Chinese food because I assumed it was not a healthy cuisine. I have since reconsidered because of the variety of vegetables and this place is phenomenal. They have five or six different types of very fresh vegetables side dishes. I recommend the bok choi, spinach with garlic, and green beans. Restaurants like this make me realize that Chinese food is actually one of the healthiest cuisines around of you manage to avoid the fried options and the heavy carb dishes. The name says it all, it's called Dan Modern Chinese, so the taste of the food and the decor of the restaurant is all modern. I would not bring my OG Chinese family here since they won't appreciate the flavors of the dishes and would judge everything based on price and portion size alone. They're more into large portions served family style in the SGV. But if I had friends visiting from out of town I'd definitely bring them here for lunch. The oxtail soup, XLB (forgot to take a pic) and the fried dumplings came out quick. The broth was not too hot in neither the soup or XLB so we could enjoy it right away. We also ordered the three cup chicken and garlic pea sprouts, both were very flavorful, just a notch too much but nothing that extra white rice can't tone down and definitely good enough for me to order it again. A dumpling spot in Long Beach and it's a spot I'm familiar with in Pasadena? Sure, what can really go wrong..? 2.5 stars for food and service, but half a star for location? We came in on Friday night, but I quickly began to regret my decision. 10 minutes in with zero acknowledgment, I was ready to walk out. We somehow caught the attention of a server and learned she's not responsible for the section I was sitting in, but she took our orders any way (yay!). Found out later our server was supposed to be the Asian guy that was super attentive to everyone except for us. The food was okay. The oxtail beef noodle soup was probably the best thing we had all night. It was a little bland, but the broth was clean and satisfying on a cold rainy night. The XLB was very soupy, but it was nothing more than average in my opinion, especially when they run for about $2/pc. The beef roll and pan fried dumplings were both duds for us. The pancakes were undercooked and the beef in the roll was just bland. The pan fried dumplings were once upon a time pan fried, but was soggy from sitting in its own grease for too long. Prices here are a lot steeper than other Dan locations, but that's also probably the sky high rent at 2nd & PCH. For the prices & quality here, it might be a much better experience and more cost efficient to just go to DTF in Torrance or any mom and pop in SGV. read more

I've been waiting for months for this place to open, and it finally happened. Long Beach has been lacking an authentic Taiwanese restaurant since the beginning of time, and it's here! Northern Cafe is about to open on the 2nd Street promenade also. I've eaten at other Dan Modern locations before, including the one in Pasadena. This one is comparable, which means quality control in the main does a good job in assuring consistency. The signature dish is the xiaolongbao, and they deliver. Ironically, the dan noodles in the namesake is only adequate. One significant misstep was the server's failure to provide the ginger and dipping sauce with the xiaolongbao. We all know that these things are not edible without the proper dipping vinegar. You can spectate the chefs making the xiaolongbao from the fishbowl setup of their kitchen, similar to Din Tai Fung. Expect to pay an arm and a leg at this fancy shopping center, but I am willing to sacrifice some body parts for good food. read more

In a city devoid of quality Chinese food, getting Dan's Modern is a big coup. Yes it still doesn't compare to the great spots in SGV but it's a step up from what currently exists. It's clear they're still working out the kinks. The food comes out in reverse order (our last dish we got was an appetizer), they forgot to give us menus when we sat, they're not great at estimating wait times. They told us 20-25 minutes and we waited almost 50 minutes. All that said, the food quality and taste are the same as the other locations. The green beans are crispy and well seasoned. A favorite of our kids. The noodles are cooked al dente and tasty. The chicken is a little dry but it's a minor complaint. The soup dumplings are juicy and delicious. Comparable to Din Tai Fung. The scallion pancakes could be seasoned a little more but the dipping sauce makes up for it. The pan fried dumplings are crispy on the outside and moist inside. The salt and pepper tofu was a pleasant surprise. They use some kind of mochi powder that makes it chewy and crispy outside, tender on the inside. Our least favorite was the cucumber. It's heavy on the sweetness and ginger so it's different than what you might be used to. We'll probably skip it the next time.
