Elegant, upscale North Shore establishment that's perfect for a special occasion. We were celebrating birthdays and from the moment we arrived the service on point- our server was Brandt. He was very attentive and patient. We never felt rushed (we were there for 3 hours). The food was absolutely delicious from beginning to end. We ordered several of restaurants traditional signature dishes. The Lump crabmeat and Brie soup was the best bisque I've had in quite a while. The Softshell crab was massive, filled with Crab and shrimp dressing. It's a little on the pricy side but definitely worth it! It was a fantastic evening with excellent food, wonderful service and great friends. A perfect spot for celebrating birthdays or special occasions! read more

OMG!! this restaurant is to die for! If our whole group (9 women) lived in the area, we all agreed we'd be back once a week just for the Lump Crabmeat & Brie Soup alone. It was that good. A lot of us started with the Tyler specialty drink and loved it, it tasted like an orange creamsicle and lemonade combined. So refreshing and fun not too sweet. We also ordered the bruschetta, which was super tasty, and everyone was obsessed with the nuts on top. Such a good touch. Several people in our group got steaks, and every single one was cooked perfectly. We tried the scallops with potatoes, absolutely perfect, and the salmon was delicious too. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the desserts... WOW. The banana bread pudding was so delicious. We had to try a few of their other desserts as well, and not a single one disappointed, every single one was spectacular. I only got a picture of the banana bread pudding, but trust me, they were all incredible. The chocolate lovers in our group absolutely loved the Chocolate Sheba cake too. Everything was so good. The place itself looks spectacular. From the moment you walk in, the seating area is so cool and inviting, I had to take pictures! They accommodated our large party so well, and the service was completely top-notch from start to finish. Our server was amazing, and we loved every second of the experience. 10/10 would eat again!! read more

Tonight my husband and I ate at Dakota, and everything was amazing. The soup is always one of our favorites. It was delicious, creamy, and full of crabmeat. The snapper was phenomenal. The service is consistently excellent as well. Sean and Jimmy were very friendly and made the experience even better. The ambiance is warm and inviting, which makes it a place we always enjoy returning to. read more

A very fine dinner at Dakota last night. We asked for outside and had the patio all to ourselves on a delightful fall evening. Escargot and Tuna sashimi for appetizers. Duck and Redfish with shrimp and crab for entrees. Excellent service from Brandon. About as good as a dining experience can be. read more

What a beautiful place! The service here was possibly the best I have experienced. All the food was incredible. The Lump Crabmeat and Brie soup is a must! I tried both the salmon and filet, and both were excellent! read more

Birthday dinner at Dakota's! First time here in the new location. I loved everything about the experience! The decor is beautiful; restaurant was a restful place for dinner. Service was top notch. Food was delicious. I liked that the entrees came with sides. Portions were generous. Highly recommend for special evenings! read more

We have been here multiple times and this is one of our favorites! To start, we of course got the crab and Brie soup! If you've never had it, you must try it. We even brought some home for our family and they LOVED it. I got the salmon which was great. It was cooked perfectly and did not have a fishy taste. It had a little bit of a crisp outside and the sweet added a nice flavor. The brussel sprouts and sweet potato hash were paired great with the dish. We also got the soft shell crab which was great. Lastly, we got the crème brûlée and the chocolate Sheba. If you love chocolate and salted caramel, this is a must have! read more

We enjoyed one of the finest meals I may have ever had. Service was impeccable and the ambiance was coordinated perfectly with what was served and it's location. I will return with friends. read more

We had a stellar experience dining at Dakota last night. The food is really delicious. We had a couple of the special appetizers that were great. The bruschetta I did not have but my party said they were very good. The soup oh so good. The salads looked amazing, the entrees were all delicious. Our waiter was lively, friendly, kind, and helpful! The drinks were all mixed perfectly. We were celebrating a birthday and the gratis cake was also tasty. The restaurant is tastefully contemporary, interesting artwork. The time between starters and entrees was a bit slow, the only improvement I could see. Thanks for a great time. We will be returning. read more

We had not been to Dakotas since their old location. Now we don't know why we haven't! This establishment is amazing and obvious of the owners' commitment to their investment for this super attractive bar and restaurant for fine dining. We were so impressed by the overall first class experience, and even their to-go cups looked like a real glass. I tried to return it for plastic.... We went for my birthday and had the best meal. Pork chops and a filet. Both cooked perfectly and really enjoyed the Planche cheese board. The bananas foster was sinful but so delicious. Our waiter, Sean M, was fantastic and of course made our dining experience just perfect. We can't wait to go back to enjoy the bar. It's so welcoming! read more

Yelp doesn't have a 3.5, but that's where I'd rank Dakota, maybe a 3.75... The restaurant is very nice inside, plenty of room between tables, so you don't feel crowded. Our server was very good, with recommendations throughout the meal, he paced correctly, and was knowledgeable about the menu and wines. The crab and Brie soup was really great. My wife had the special swordfish and it was really good. I had the filet...not great...meat was tough, it was cooked far past medium-rare, and the sauce underneath lacked any real flavor. For dessert, we tried the coconut cake and bread pudding. The coconut cake was dry and not really coconutty (sp) enough. The bread pudding was good. As far as price, they're expensive- and I don't mind paying high prices at all if the experience and food support them. Dakota fell a little short. My wife and I ultimately judge a restaurant on if we'd go back...our answer was a maybe. read more

One of my too favorites so far in 2024! This gem is in the small town of Covington La. We stayed at the wonderful Southern Hotel in I guess what they would call their cute small town downtown are with shops, restraunt s, market, etc! This place was just a block away. Ambiance is very classy, high end decor, low lights- very comfortable and romantic. Our waiter was very knowledgable and had great recommendations! We basically ordered everything he said was a staple. The duck flat bread was SO good? just order it! Steaks were cooked perfectly. My drink was very stiff also haha read more

After a few years of our Dakota withdrawals, we were overjoyed when they announced their new location. I called the first week and made a reservation for dinner with my husband and parents. My husband and I now live in Houston, but the last time we ate at Dakota's was in 2019 for my 30th birthday. We hoped it would be the same incredible atmosphere and service, and we were not disappointed! We had the pleasure of having Kat as our waitress, and she went above and beyond to deliver a sensational experience. I have a gluten intolerance, and she had the chef come out and discuss what menu items could accommodate my dietary restrictions. He strongly recommended the salmon (which my husband ordered). They were able to modify the Redfish Pontchartrain, and I ordered that. We started with the side of truffle fries as our appetizer. My mom ordered the crab and Brie soup (if you can have gluten, it's worth every penny), as well as a salad. My husband had the salmon, and my dad and I had the redfish (he had his as is). The restaurant used to be a CrossFit gym, and they turned it into a beautiful dining establishment. It's also within walking distance of Southern Hotel and other fun shops in downtown Covington. We will absolutely be back!! read more

Dakota - Redfish Pontchartrain - Southern Near Me - Covington, Louisiana

I have tried to really like this place for many years but I am still not feeling it. We recently dined for the first time in their new location in downtown Covington. The space is really nice. But the food is the same. It is good but it doesn't really impress. The softshell crab was the same as always. A nice presentation but on a disappointing bed of rice "pilaf". The lobster roll on the special July lobster menu was all roll and very little lobster. Extremely disappointing. The redfish dish was fine but lacking a real punch of flavor. The service was fine. After the meal, I remembered why this place was not on our main rotation. For the prices charged, I would expect a better meal. And lastly, some of our party who are smokers, were asked by the restaurant to step off of the outdoor deck, which was complete empty on a Tuesday evening, to move out to the driveway in the rain. read more

Came here on vacation - the manager Joey was so hospitable and kind - very funny - we got the truffle fries and pork belly pizza - BOTH DELICIOUS- cocktails were mixed perfectly by the bartenders who make sure our drinks and waters were never empty. The restaurant was clean and beautifully decorated - you have to get the French press coffee with the crème brûlée dessert and coconut cake - I will definitely be back! read more

Ambiance: lovely but parking is a nightmare! I had to park three blocks away. They have a walk bridge to an adjacent parking lot with very limited spaces as it is shared by other Covington establishments and those spaces being closest to the restaurant were only a two hour maximum. Also it's not clear where the restaurant is in relation to that little walk bridge. Unknowingly I was on the far end of the parking lot in a construction area marked Dakota's pkg. but there were no signs leading you to where the restaurant was located. Very confusing! I ended up having to walk up several streets and around the block, yet without knowing I was much closer than that, but there was no bearings/signs etc to point the way. They could at least put signs up, pointing to the restaurant from the parking lot instead of making you go all the way around through lack of knowledge.. Food: less than expected. The Brie crab soup was perfection as usual, but the price has escalated to $18 for a tiny amount. $36 for a tiny cup of soup for the two of us is way too much IMO. My entrée chicken fried chicken was a total disappointment. The chicken was fried entirely too long and sat on 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. They described a sauce, but I saw none of it. They no longer offer complementary bread either. You have to pay for any bread, $7 for a few rolls. IMO it's a sad day when a New Orleans restaurant of this caliber will not GIVE you a basket of bread while you wait. The lamb nachos appetizer was unimpressive. The steak which used to be a favorite was also a disappointment.. tough. However, the Bananas Foster bread pudding dessert was exceptional. All in all the only two good things that we ate was the soup and dessert. Everything was overpriced for what you got. We will not be back and we've been going to Dakota's for years when it was In Covington on 190. It's changed quite a bit and unfortunately, not for the better. Service: short handed waitstaff. One gal for entire dining room during lunch service and no bus staff she had to do it all. read more

I thought the food was great. We got the red fish and salmon both were cooked perfectly and the sauce was great with it. Tuna tartar appetizer was ok, would not probably order again. I felt as if the portions were a little small and we left hungry. Definitely a little over priced. Service was really good, and Sherri the waitress was knowledgeable. Not a huge wine list to choose from which was also disappointing. Ambience was perfect the place is very very modern and cute. I liked how spaced out the tables were l. Would probably go back but may need to order way more food. read more

The new Dakota restaurant is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful place to celebrate any occasion. Thank God they're famous crab and brie. Soup is as good as ever. They still need a little work in the kitchen. The lobster Thermidor was rubbery, but their quit. They took it off of our bill, the steak had to be cooked twice it came out overdone the first time the veal really wasn't very good. The salmon was outstanding the service is spectacular and we will definitely be back in the near future. Hopefully they get things straightened up in the kitchen very soon. read more

I always enjoyed Dakota's old location, so I was excited when they announced the new location. I finally got to try it this weekend and it was a mixed bag. Too many empty tables and a completely empty lounge and bar seem to underline our experience. PROS: Beautiful restaurant. The buildout rivals some of the nicest restaurants in New Orleans, New York, Boston, Chicago, and London. The food is very good. CONS: Vastly overpriced. The prices aren't reflected in the food quality (good, not great) or the portions, which are oddly small. Also, the menu concept feels dated. And, the service is also strangely mediocre. The entire cadence of order-taking and food delivery was frustratingly disjointed. BOTTOM LINE: This place has enormous potential, but the food and service betray their vision for the kind of 'elite' restaurant people flocked to 20 or 30 years ago. Better-but-more interesting and equal-but-more affordable dining options are worth the drive. read more

Nice bar but...it is large and open to the dining room. The bar bites were undesirable selection and very pricey. There is no Happy hour menu that was disappointing. Spent $50 on one martini and cheese plate. Then, they had the audacity to ask if I wanted a stuffed olive in my martini. it was addtl. Really? Rude. Has my "taste" and left no need to stay for dinner. read more

Our first time dining at the new location on Boston, and what a fantastic meal that rivaled some of the best we have had anywhere including Europe and up scale cruises. The crab and Brie soup was rich and loaded with crabmeat. The veal 3 ways entree was expertly done with heavy French influence in the sauces. Special occasion celebrated with chocolate dessert gratis. Wine list was well represented. Service attentive and welcoming. Dining room a little noisy, the only slight negative. Well done Dakotas!! read more

I really want Dakota to be what it could be. Building and interior are very nice. Servers very friendly and attentive as they should in fine dining. Had diner at the bar recently, thanks Devin. Drinks were great, wine list extensive. The food is good, but needs to be better for this restaurant. We enjoyed the Plaunche Charcuterie which was nice, the crab and Brie soup is fantastic. I had the pork chop which was a little tough and came up short on overall flavor, the accompaniment seasonings seemed off and unbalanced with the dish. My wife had the filet mignon which sat in a flavorless puree of spinach, I think it was. The steak was cooked to med rare, but whatever the finishing sauce was over the top watered down the flavor of the sear and didn't need to be there. Banana foster dessert was good. I hope the food comes up to the level of service, overall restaurant feel, and entree price, but it's not there. read more

Absolutely delicious and wonderful experience. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. My husband and I went for our anniversary and everything was very well done. We ordered the shrimp appetizer and then shared the charred romaine salad and the crab soup. Everything was so freaking good. Then for dinner he got the redfish that was out of this world and I ordered the soft shell crab. It was the best and biggest soft shell crab I've ever eaten. For dessert we ordered the peaches and cream and the simplicity of this dish was the perfect end to our meal. We can't wait to visit again. read more

We were celebrating a birthday, our first time here. We were dressed for the occasion. My boyfriend wore a dress shirt, slacks and a fedora. Apparently, you're not allowed to wear a hat into the restaurant. The manager asked us to leave. On the other hand, there were people in shorts. We brought that up to the manager. His response was that a different part of the restaurant, which wasn't true. The restaurant and bar were completely open to each other. It was a very embarrassing experience. read more

We were just kicked out of Dakotas. For what you ask? Because I was wearing a button down shirt, slacks...and BIRKENSTOCKS! My wife was wearing jeans, a sweater and was also wearing Birkenstocks. It was before 5pm, no one was there, we were going to sit at the bar and then the hostesses freaked out and got the Manager Jimmy. His attitude sucked and then turned us away. Hey Dakotas- You're not a 5 star, Michelin rated restaurant in NYC... you're a small town, decent restaurant with ratings going down, staff leaving, and with food quality that is just average. Thanks for making our choice of choosing where we're eating a little easier, because you are now out of the rotation. read more

The good: The waiter was awesome! He was knowledgeable about the menu and wine choices. The crab and Brie soup was as I remember - delicious! And the brioche bread was also extremely good (though you need to pay for it). The restaurant looks great in terms of the space. The bad: The entrees were decent, just not totally worth the price tag. We were also 15 minutes late and when I called to let the hostess know, it seemed like she was recommending I cancel because they were tightly booked. The manager approved us coming 15 minutes late but we felt a bit flustered and rushed by this. Parking was also a bit of an issue. I'd still give it another try. read more

Let me preface this by saying that the original Dakota was our absolute favorite restaurant. We loved it and shouted it from the rooftops! We were sad when it closed, but excited that their new location is very close to our house. We tried it last week and were extremely disappointed. The new location is nice, but definitely does not have the charm and ambience of the previous location. We were very disappointed when we saw the menu. It's extremely limited and very few of the items from the old menu are on there. Our party of 4 spent almost $400 and that would be no issue if the food was phenomenal, but it wasn't. The steaks were requested to be medium rare and were cooked way past that. The service was ok, but nothing like it used to be. So disappointed. We will not be back. read more

Over priced for what you get. Took an hour between courses and two of the 4 entrees were barely room temperature and the whole red fish entrees were so full of bones it was not worth the effort so two of our party of 4 gave up. I was told I'd receive a new replacement filet because mine was one of the entrees that was barely warm. They took it to the kitchen and reappeared about 5 minutes later with the same steak that it was obvious they stuck under a red light warmer and the plate wasn't even hot. The offered free dessert as an apology but truly, that's simply not acceptable for a $$$ per person dinner. Everyone in the party was disappointed with our Christmas celebration dinner. One chance to make a first impression- one and done. No way we'll throw $300+ to chance there again especially with Keith Young's, Desi Vegas and many other great options. read more

Early dinner with wife. Amazing food, service, and ambience. The new location is beautiful!

I moved from the DC area and I've been living in Covington for the past 5 years. I have been going to Dakota since they were at their original location and The food is always phenomenal and consistent. There new location in downtown Covington is absolutely beautiful! My favorites are the lump crab and Brie soup, one of the best soups I've ever had....lamb nachos is a great shareable starter, ahi sesame tuna salad is absolutely delicious. For entrees, when they have the veal chop on special, it's an automatic order for me, but otherwise I like the veal with 3 sauces and the redfish pontchartrain, but really everything is good. I've seen a few reviews that are just flat out wrong so I felt compelled to leave this review. For those visiting from out of town, this is a fine dining experience and they have a dress code so don't be upset if they call you out on it, but the dress code is not unreasonable like some of the restaurants I frequent up in the northeast. This is by far one of the best restaurants on the North Shore so if you're visiting....go and enjoy! read more

Always have loved Dakota's. The new location is incredible... it keeps the "original" Dakota feel but being more open and spacious. It's always interesting to look at the various art on the wall and their new wine "wall" takes center stage. We have always enjoyed going for both dinner as well as cocktails and bar bites. The food is always good as well as the cocktails. It is a little pricey, but you really do get what you pay for with regards to the quality and the excellent service. read more

Seriously do not recommend this place. The atmosphere in the restaurant was extremely pretentious. Do not come into this restaurant wearing shorts either! You will get dress coded and directed out of the main dining room. The food was OK at best, certainly not worth the price tag. The service was mediocre for sure. All around it wasn't a very good experience, for anyone in my family.
